Marvel RivalsAll Marvel Rivals Heroes by Role: Vanguards, Duelists, and Strategists (Patch 5)

In Marvel Rivals, a hero is a playable character drawn from the Marvel Universe, whether a classic hero, villain, or anti-hero, designed as a unique combat entity within the game’s team-based, 6v6 PvP format

Heroes Overview by Role

There are 44 heroes in Marvel Rivals, every playable hero is designed around a distinct combat role that defines their strengths, playstyle, and contribution to team dynamics. These roles - Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist - create a rock-paper-scissors dynamic where positioning, synergy, and team composition matter as much as individual skill. Whether you're looking to dive headfirst into battle, pick off enemies from the flanks, or support your team with tactical precision, understanding each role is key to climbing the ranks and mastering the game’s 6v6 arena combat.

Vanguards

Vanguards are the tanks of Marvel Rivals. They tend to have larger health pools and bigger body sizes compared to Duelists and Strategists. In general, they're designed to stay alive longer, soak up damage, and draw attention from the enemy team. Each one has ways to block or mitigate damage towards themselves and/or their allies. There are currently 11 Vanguards.

Duelists

Duelists are heroes that are designed to deal damage and secure kills. There is a wide range of playstyles within the role, ranging from long-range snipers to melee duelists. Heroes of this role rarely have abilities that can aid or help teammates directly. Some flourish working on their own, while others are at their best when enabled by their team. There are currently 23 Duelists.

Strategists

Strategists are the supportive heroes of the Marvel Rivals cast. They can turn the tide of battle with some of the most powerful ultimate in the game. Each has abilities that can heal and enable their allies while providing other unique utilities such as resurrections, damage amps, and crowd control. There are currently 10 Strategists.

How roles work in Marvel Rivals?

Are roles locked in Marvel Rivals?

No, roles are not locked.
Marvel Rivals currently allows players to pick any combination of roles without restriction. You’re free to stack roles—meaning your team can run six Vanguards, five Strategists, and one Duelist, or any other configuration. This freedom enables creative and chaotic strategies, but also places a stronger emphasis on team communication and awareness.

Can I swap to a different role or hero mid-match?

Yes, you can switch heroes at spawns or between deaths.
Unlike some other games, where you're locked into your role for an entire match, Marvel Rivals lets you adapt. After being eliminated, you'll return to the hero select screen and can pick any hero not already chosen by a teammate. This enables role-swapping mid-match to counter enemies, support different team comps, or respond to changing objectives.

Will Marvel Rivals add more roles in the future?

Unlikely, based on current design philosophy.
Marvel Rivals mirrors the three-role model popularized by Overwatch:

  • Duelist = DPS
  • Vanguard = Tank
  • Strategist = Support

Adding new roles could complicate the hero ecosystem and team balance, so the focus appears to be on expanding depth within these three existing roles, via new characters, balance patches, and synergies.

Which role should I choose as a beginner?

If you're new to hero shooters:

  • Start with Strategists like Rocket Raccoon or Luna Snow to learn positioning and team support.
  • Try Duelists like The Punisher or Squirrel Girl if you want simplified damage dealing.
  • Use Vanguards like Groot or Dr. Strange to anchor teamfights and soak up pressure.

Every role brings value, but Strategists often have a lower mechanical barrier and high team impact, making them a great entry point. Do not forget to check our Marvel Rivals tier list curated by Game Experts, providing details of the meta during the current patch.

Does role balance matter in ranked play?

Yes, but it's up to your team to enforce it.
Because roles are not locked, teams can run a wide variety of comps. Coordination and role synergy are always the most crucial aspects for success, especially when contesting objectives or countering enemy lineups.
