Marvel RivalsMarvel Rivals Human Torch Character Guide

In this Marvel Rivals Human Torch guide, you’ll learn the fundamentals of his abilities, unique play styles, and fundamental tips.

Human Torch Overview

Prepare to ignite the battlefield. Wielding the flames that engulf him, Johnny Storm propels himself through the sky as the Human Torch. Whereas most heroes specialize in 1v1 or AoE combat, Human Torch is a real hotshot at both.

Against grouped up enemies, his Flame Fields and walls rack up high amounts of damage and farm his ultimate quickly. When facing off against a single target, he can combo all his abilities together to decisively win the duel.

Also, between his Flame Tornadoes and Fields, he has some of the best area denial abilities of any hero. Whether you need to pressure a team off of a payload in Convoy, or away from the Mission Area in Domination, no one does it better than Johnny. Flame on!

TLDR

As

  • Stay near your team and focus on dealing high amounts of AoE damage into the enemy.
  • Don't slam into full HP enemies as they'll have a higher chance of surviving and eliminating you.
  • When facing hitscans, fly around and behind them so you can KO them first, then get back to attacking the rest of their team.

Against

  • Play spaced out from your allies. If you are positioned close together, he'll farm ult really fast off of your team.
  • Run multiple hitscans like Hela, Punisher and Adam Warlock if a Human Torch is giving your team a hard time.
  • Watch for his slam, and focus him down in response. He won't have his escape tool, and can be quickly KO'd.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

Flyer with mobility

The biggest weakness of the other fliers' kits is their lack of mobility. Human Torch not only has Plasma Body to accelerate his movement through the air, he also has Flaming Meteor to use as a near-instant engage or disengage tool.

Area denial

Being able to influence where the enemy team can position is an invaluable resource to bring to a team. Johnny can fly over walls and Shields and place Pyro-Prisons where enemy Strategists are trying to stand or where a Duelist is trying to set up. Control choke points, doorways, and objectives with your flames to funnel the enemy team into whatever position you'd like.

High damage output

As Long As You Are cycling your cooldowns correctly Human Torch has virtually no downtime. Massive amounts of AoE damage to groups and a burst combo to use against individual enemies creates a vicious cycle of farming ult, winning a fight with it, just to quickly farm another.

Weaknesses

Struggles against hitscans

Johnny wants to position with his team and assist with dominating the overall team fight. Enemy hitscans are a wet blanket on this game plan. They have the advantage in both range and consistency and force him to play passively or be shot out of the sky.

If he can catch an enemy hit scan off guard with his flaming meteor combo, Human Torch stands a chance. But he doesn't want to be constantly trying to flank and create 1v1s because that takes him away from his primary role of spamming into grouped-up enemies.

Low health and mobility for diving

Flaming Meteor tricks Human Torch players into thinking he is a dive character. If he uses the slam to engage, however, he's helpless against the enemy's counter-attack.

With only 250 HP and no form of self-sustain, Flaming Meteor can be more dangerous to Johnny than it is to his enemies.

Weaker at long range

The spread and damage falloff of his primary fire means his power level falls off noticeably the farther away from his targets he positions.

Tips for Fire Cluster

Resource management

  • Unlike most heroes, Human Torch's primary fire is resource-based rather than having a reloadable ammo clip. The stocks refresh very quickly. Alternating between firing few rounds of primary and using his other abilities maximizes uptime and ensures you can attack constantly.

Good for air-to-air battles

  • Decent projectile speed and critical hit capability make Fire Cluster a good ability when dueling the other fliers.

Tips for Blazing Blast

Best saved for Pyro-Prison

  • Don't use up all of your Blazing Blast charges if Pyro-Prison is about to come off cooldown.

Use Flame Fields to control areas

  • The lingering damage of the Flame Fields created by Blazing Blast are great for cutting off choke points, paths, and doorways. The enemy will either have to walk through and take damage, or wait until the flames extinguish.
  • The flames are especially good when used against immobile Vanguards like Groot who can't quickly escape their AoE.

Flame Fields stack

  • Piling on multiple at the same location will deal higher damage.

Tips for Pyro-Prison

Wait until you have 3 or more Blazing Blasts available

  • Creating a 3 or 4-point prison is much better than a single line. Seeing as this ability has a long 15 second CD, you can't afford to waste it.

Burst damage and continuous damage

  • Anyone in a fire wall's path on activation takes a burst of damage. The same burst damage applies to anyone who walks through the wall at any point during its duration.
  • All enemies inside the walls of Pyro-Prison take damage until the flames are extinguished.

How many walls connect?

You can actually connect together 5 Flames if you wait for the 5th to recharge before activating Pryro-Prison.

Hallways are a fire hazard

  • The large AoE of a square or triangle Pryo-Prison can take up wall-to-wall space in hallways. Anytime you notice a map area is funneling the enemy into a hallway, trap them in your flames.
  • Teams will either get separated, or you'll farm a ton of ult charge from the enemy forcing their way through.

Blocked by walls, stairs, and structures

  • Make sure your placement of Blazing Blasts have unbroken lines to one another or the fire will not connect. Uneven surfaces like staircases will also hinder the connection.

Tips for Plasma Body

Evade

  • Whether you are fighting and need to evade while being healing or waiting for your abilities to refresh, Plasma Body makes Human Torch surprisingly difficult for enemies to track.

Flank

  • While flanking is not the primary role of Human Torch, his burst combos make him a deadly assassin. Use Plasma body to quickly reposition on the enemies flank and dive in. Just make sure to save around half your accelerated ascent resource to escape if you're gonna use Flaming Meteor during the fight.

Change your settings

  • If you play on keyboard rebind your Descent input. Holding down SHIFT and using left Ctrl for accelerated descent is difficult. Choose another key bind to make the input more comfortable and increase your evasive maneuvers.

Tips for Flaming Meteor

250HP Combo

  • Fire Cluster Blazing Blast Flaming Meteor
    • Cancel each recovery animation into the next ability. KOs 250HP heroes at close to medium range.
    • Adding one more primary fire at the end will eliminate 300HP heroes.

Detonates Blazing Blast flames

  • The damage from detonating Flame Feilds is significantly higher than Meteror slam on its own so always shoot your secondary fire to the slam location before going in.

Don't slam into a full team

  • Human Torch is very squishy and slamming into a group of enemies just gives them a free kill. Only slam into isolated targets, or when you see the majority of the enemies are preoccupied by your team.

Finish off, or escape

  • Don't initiate an attack with Flaming Meteor. Instead, save it to finish off enemies as a final blow.
  • Sometimes using the slam to quickly escape to safety is a far better use than attacking with it. Human Torch positions in dangerous spaces and exposes himself to enemy counterattacks. Slamming back toward your team or behind cover is your best means of survival.

Tips for Supernova

Area denial and zoning

  • Supernova is one of the best zoning tools any hero has as it says, "you can't stand here," the entire enemy team. Use the tornadoes to funnel the enemy into bad positions by pushing them into your team or split them off from one another.

Up to three simultaneous Flame Tornadoes

  • Human Torch can spam tornadoes during the full duration of the ult but only three tornadoes can exist at one time. If the three are in a good location, use his other abilities to attack.

Activation Damage

  • The activation damage can help secure elims with your ult. Even so, it's still better to position safely and miss out on the activation damage than to make yourself an easy target for the sake of a small burst of damage.

Team-Up Ability [X]: Omega Fire (Storm)

DESCRIPTION

When the Human Torch activates Supernova, Storm can summon an Omega Fire by selecting a Flame Tornado with Omega Hurricane. Storm

Tips for Omega Fire

Two ways to activate

  • Coordinating the two ultimates is very easy because either Human Torch or Storm can activate their ult first. If Human Torch goes first, Storm can instantly teleport to the location of any Flame Tornado. If Storm is already ulting, Human Torch press [ X ] to instantly ignite Storm's ultimate and activate his own.

Kills through defensive ultimates

  • The combination of Human Torch and Storm's fire tornadoes will out-damage the healing of every defensive ult. If the whole enemy team is grouping up inside their Strategist's AoE, unleash the flames and wipe the whole team.

Keep firing near Storm

  • Each Flame Tornado Storm goes through with her ult adds 2 seconds to her ult's duration. Make sure you are throwing Tornadoes where she's attacking.

Tips for United Siblings

Survive aggressive plays

  • Having his sister on his team enables much riskier plays by Johnny. Going on deep flanks in an attempt to assassinate an enemy Strategist is usually difficult and dangerous. Being able to activate Bonus Health and self healing makes plays like these far less risky, and raises your odds of success.

Synergies

Team Comp Synergies

The ideal comp built around Human Torch capitalizes on his area denial abilities. There's no point in splitting off teams or funneling enemies into a bad position if no one can follow up. You want allies with either the mobility or range to follow up on Johnny's attacks.

Strategists who can sustain him without him needing to fall back should always be ran with him. Since he has no self-sustain, he heavily relies on support from his teammates.

Depending on what heroes the enemy team chooses, your team can double down on AoE damage, or have the rest of the team specialize in single-target damage to convert elims through focus fire.

For example, against high sustain comps like Triple Strategist, you'll want to have more single-target damage and not feed their Strategist ults with a lot of AoE damage.

Team Comp Example

  • Vanguards: Groot, Venom
  • Duelists: Human Torch, Storm
  • Strategists: Invisible Woman, Cloak & Dagger

Hero Synergies

Vanguards: Groot

Groot and the Human Torch share the same specialty of controlling and denying space. Your Flames are incredibly good at awakening Groot's walls to stack the flame and Vine damage together.

Being able to fly means that Johnny can attack enemies behind Groot's walls that his grounded teammates can't. Pushing in on a team with Groot and Human Torch is very difficult as they both create literal walls of damage.

Comboing your ults together lets Human Torch drop all of his tornadoes and CDs on the entangled enemies. Burning them up with no way to escape.

Duelists: Storm

You may think the strength of running Storm and Johnny Storm on the same team lies in their Team-Up ultimate. While their Team-Up is crazy strong and deals massive damage, this is not there it isn't the only reason to play them together.

The two Flyers can position on opposite sides of their team to create opposing angles of attack and divide the enemy's attention. This forces the enemy team to have to deal with your Vanguards directly in front of them, Storm up and off to one angle, and yourself up and off in yet another direction.

Even the most coordinated teams will struggle with knowing where to shift their attention and resources.

Strategists: Invisible Woman

Siblings unite! They aren't just siblings, they are a great duo to run in Marvel Rivals. Invisible Woman can push or pull enemies into Johnny's flames and stack her Psionic Vortex on top.

Johnny can use his flames reactively when he sees Sue pull an enemy out of position and create a Flame wall to keep them isolated from their team.

When it's time to Flaming Meteor slam into the enemy, Sue can keep replacing her shield in front of Johnny as he gets back to a safe position. Having your sister on your team helps to protect you from getting flammed for picking Human Torch.
