Marvel RivalsMarvel Rivals Thor Character Guide
Thor Overview
Thor, the god of thunder and god of Vanguard aggression is a Duelist with Vanguard health. No other Vanguard applies the same level of offensive pressure as the son of Odin. When the enemy team is running dive Vanguards, fly into them with Mjolnir to completely disrupt their attack.
Against teams with a more stationary frontline, simply walk past them and use Awakening Rune to obliterate their backline. Although he offers no protection to his team, that doesn’t hold back the prince of Asgard whose gameplan is to eliminate the enemy before they have a chance to threaten his allies.

TLDR
As
- When using Awakening Rune, enemies with 275HP or less should be your primary target because Thor quickly KOs them with its 4-round burst.
- Use Storm Surge to repeatedly displace enemy Vanguards. Being dashed into over and over makes it difficult for enemy Vangaurds to do anything.
- Once you're out of Thorforce charges, use Lighting Realm on a group of enemies to restore Thorforce, and inflict damage and a slow debuff.
Against
- Pick a hero with a lot of crowd control like Peni Parker. Thor has no abilities that block or counter CC.
- Play keep away. Constantly reposition and stay out of his melee range. You’ll force him to use up his Thorforce resources before even being able to attack you.
- When you see him enter the Awakened state, retreat to cover or use a shield until his ability ends.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
High Burst Damage
Awakening Rune forces the enemy backline to either respect Thor or get deleted. Thor can eliminate a 275HP with a single 4-round burst. He gets two of these 4-round bursts with each use.
Constant Bonus Health
Every time Thor uses an ability, he generates bonus health. He can use an ability every 1.5 seconds as long as he keeps refreshing Thorforce which has him constantly gaining the 100HP bonus.
Displacement CC
Since all his abilities use the same resource, Thor can spam Storm Surge over and over to keep displacing an enemy away from their team. Many Vangaurds struggle to counter this and depend on their team to save them.
Weaknesses
No Damage Mitigation for Teammates
Thor doesn’t perform any typical Vanguard functions very well. He offers no protection to his allies and can’t reliably peel for his backline either unless he stays back and waits. He doesn’t want to play passive like that though.
Vulnerable to CC
With a single movement ability that he has to wind up in order to travel far, Thor gets owned by teams with a lot of CC. Other than trying to occasionally dodge, he possesses no means of counterplay against stuns.
Limited by Shared Resource
Due to all his abilities using the same charges of Thorforce, he can’t spam his abilities one after another. Case in point, if he runs out of Thorforce from going deep with Awakening Rune, he’ll be stuck without the ability to use Storm Surge to disengage.

Tips For Storm Surge
- Mobility, damage, and displacement CC.
- Mobility: Use Storm Surge to quickly transverse the map, gain access to high ground, engage and disengage from fights.
- Damage: Repeatedly dash into enemies you are dueling to interpret their attacks and maximize your damage output.
- Displacement CC: A fully charged Storm surge will have Thor carrying an enemy 13 meters with him. Most enemies will not survive being carried into your team if you can get behind them.
- Many mobility abilities can be interrupted over and over by Storm Surge. An Enemy Hulk has to restart charging his Incredible Leap every time he gets hit by Storm Surge.
- Clear enemies off high ground.
- Thor’s job is to use Storm Surge to reach areas his other Vanguard can’t, and pressure enemies off high ground areas to diminish their threat against his team.
- Generate bonus health
- Anytime you need to prioritize staying alive, keep spamming Storm Surge instead of using Awakening Rune to maximize the total amount of bonus health you can generate.
[E]: Lightning Realm

COOLDOWN | 12s |
SPECIAL EFFECT | For each enemy within the spell area, 1 point of Thorforce is restored. Enemies that cross the boundary will be Slowed by 30% |
Tips for Lightning Realm
- Use on grouped enemies when in need of Thorforce
- Each enemy in your AoE upon activation restores a Thorforce.
- Use in duels to make securing KOs much easier.
- When an enemy enters or exits the AoE, they take damage and are inflicted with a slow debuff. The slowed movement is especially useful in duels as it makes finishing them off with Awakened state attacks more consistent.
[F]: Awakening Rune

KEY | F + Left-click enchanced |
CASTING | Ability Enhancement |

Tips For Awakening Rune
- Target Strategists and Duelists
- Thor is the best Vanguard for quickly taking out non-Vanguards. The best use of Awakening Rune is to walk past the enemy frontline and immediately attack their backline.
- AoE damage around Thor
- If the Awakened son of Odin is extremely close to an enemy, (within 3 meters), they take damage over time.
- Very helpful to finish off targets since the damage is automatic when within range.
- Bonus Tip: At point blank range, a 4-round burst will KO 300HP heroes because of the additional passive damage.
- Can’t cancel once activated
- Make sure you have the sustain to survive the entire duration of Awakening Rune since you won’t be able to cancel it and use other abilities to generate additional bonus health.
- Be wary of entering the Awakened state during enemy ults because you can’t Storm Surge dash away from their attacks.
- No cooldown after use
- As of the Season 1.5 update, Thor can now instantly use all abilities the moment Awakening Rune ends.
- Typically, you'll want to use Storm Surge to disengage unless you have Lightning Realm Available to generate enough Thorforce for another Awakening Rune.
Passive: Thorforce
DESCRIPTION | Consume Thorforce to gain Bonus Health. Landing Mjolnir Bash on an enemy instantly recharges Thorforce |
MAXIMUM THORFORCE | Passive |
THORFORCE RECOVERY SPEED | 5s per Thorforce |
BONUS HEALTH PER THORFORCE | Each point of Thorforce consumed grants 100 Bonus Health, while abilities that consume 3 points of Thorforce grant 200 Bonus Health |
BONUS MAX HEALTH | 200 |
MJOLNIR BASH ENERGY RECOVERY PER THORFORCE | 5s |
THORFORCE CONSUMPTION COOLDOWN |
Tips for Thorforce
- Choose wisely
- All of Thor’s abilities share Thorforce as a single resource. You’ll need to choose the most appropriate use of your available Thorforce for each given moment.
- Refer to each abilities tip section to help you optimize your resource management and ability usage.
- Although not listed in his abilities, Storm Surge and Hammer Throw both restore Thorforce on hit.
[Q] ULTIMATE: God of Thunder

HEIGHT | 9m |
DURATION | |
DAMAGE | The sustained spell field lasts for 0.5s, dealing 40 damage, while the one-time spell field deals 220 damage |
ENERGY COST | 3100 |
Tips for God of Thunder
- Activate Lightning Realm to slow your targets before using your ultimate. If they don’t have an escape ability, they will become too slow to walk out of your ult’s AoE.
- Combo with Allies stun abilities and ultimates for a powerful guaranteed hit.
- Immune to Crowd Control
- Since Thor is immune to CC while using his ult, you can reactively use your ult as a counter to enemy stun ultimates like Doctor Strange.
- Instead of having your soul stunned out of you, Strange will eat a lighting hammer to the face!
- Combine with Luna/Rocket ult for 300HP KO
- The 40% damage boost from either of their ults enables Thor to one-shot all 300HP enemies. Coordinate with your Strategists for ez wins.
Team-up Ability: Odinson Reborn (Passive)
DESCRIPTION | When Hela lands a final hit in defeating an enemy, she can instantly resurrect Loki and Thor in the respawn phase, or grant them bonus health if they are still alive |
KEY | Passive |
RESPAWN HEALTH PERCENTAGE | 80% |
BONUS HEALTH | 50 |
RESPAWN DELAY | 1.5s |
Tips for Odinson Reborn
- Don’t need to do anything other than have Hela on your team.
- Very Strong Team-Up.
- Every time Hela lands the final hit, Thor either gets bonus health or gets instantly resurrected.
- If you’re playing Thor, it’s worth asking if any of your teammates play Hela.
Synergies
Team Comp Synergies
Team comps built around Thor enable his aggressive playstyle. Thor doesn’t want to brawl enemy Vanguards and doesn’t want to be stuck babysitting his backline.
Instead, Thor is at his best when he is free to push up, pop Awakening Rune, and look for quick elims on the enemy's backline. Having another Vanguard on the frontline is very important since he offers his team no protection.
Since he has no damage mitigation himself either, Thor benefits from allies who can protect him from enemy attacks like how Invisible Woman can with her shield and Force Physics.
Example of Team Comp Built Around Thor
- Vanguards: Thor, Magneto
- Duelists: Star-Lord, Hela
- Strategists: Invisible Woman, Rocket Racoon
Hero Synergies
Vanguards: Magneto
Magneto makes up for Thor’s weaknesses by being the team’s protector. Magneto controls the frontline and mitigates damage while Thor constantly applies forward pressure.
Metal Bulwark on Thor is one of the scariest sights an enemy Strategist can see since there’s no way for them to stop Thor until the bubble ends or breaks. When an enemy is threatening Thor, Magneto can also knock them back and buy time for Thor to fly away with his hammer.
Duelists: Hela
Hela sits back and creates focus fire with Thor on whoever he chooses to target. Being a sniper hero allows Hela to help Thor secure elims without having to physically follow him around. Additionally, if she finishes off the enemies Thor is attacking, he gets the Team-Up bonus health and keeps attacking for even longer. No worries if trades his life for an elim since she can score a rez for him.
Strategists: Invisible Woman
Sue Storm has a trifold function when backlining for Thor. First off, since he’s usually right in the face of his target, Sue’s piercing primary fire will be simultaneously healing Thor and damaging his enemy.
Secondly, she can continuously redeploy her shield in front of Thor as he pushes up which makes it difficult for the enemy to stun him. Lastly, if Thor is getting countered by CC like Wolverine’s Feral Leap, Invisible Woman can use Force Physics to get the enemy off of Thor and allow him to live and counterattack.
