Elden Ring Arcane Build - Stats, Weapons, Skills & More

Updated on Aug 23, 2026
Aug 23, 2026

Overview

Arcane is one of the most versatile offensive attributes in Elden Ring. It can increase the damage of dedicated Arcane-scaling weapons, improve status buildup on weapons that scale with Arcane, strengthen Occult-infused weapons, and support powerful spellcasting through the Dragon Communion Seal.

While Arcane is most commonly associated with Blood Loss, a strong Arcane build doesn't need to rely entirely on Bleed. Depending on your weapon, Arcane can support Poison, Physical damage, elemental damage, Dragon Communion Incantations, and several unique weapon Skills.

One of Arcane's biggest strengths is its enormous weapon variety. Fast Daggers, Katanas, Heavy Thrusting Swords, Twinblades, Great Spears, Colossal Weapons, and several DLC weapon types can all make excellent use of the stat.

The Occult affinity is especially valuable for weapons that already have innate status buildup. It allows their Physical damage to scale heavily with Arcane while retaining their existing passive effect, making weapons with innate Blood Loss particularly effective.

Shadow of the Erdtree expanded Arcane builds even further with weapons such as the Bloodfiend's Arm, Obsidian Lamina, Putrescence Cleaver, Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword, and Flowerstone Gavel, giving Arcane characters considerably more options beyond traditional Bleed setups.

How Arcane Affects Status Buildup

An important distinction is that Arcane does not automatically increase every status effect in the game.

Blood Loss and Poison buildup can scale with Arcane when the weapon applying the status also has Arcane attribute scaling. This is why Blood and Poison affinities become increasingly effective on high-Arcane characters.

Occult affinity works slightly differently. It provides strong Arcane scaling and is particularly effective on weapons that already have innate Blood Loss or Poison, allowing both their regular damage and existing status buildup to benefit from your Arcane investment.

However, you should not assume that every status weapon becomes stronger simply because you level Arcane. Some status buildup values, including many sources of Scarlet Rot and Frostbite, remain fixed regardless of your Arcane stat. The Putrescence Cleaver, for example, has fixed Frostbite buildup even though the weapon itself benefits strongly from Arcane.

Your weapon's scaling and affinity therefore determine whether Arcane actually improves its status buildup.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent damage potential with both unique and infusible weapons.
  • Can dramatically improve Blood Loss and Poison buildup on appropriate Arcane-scaling weapons.
  • Occult affinity turns many weapons with innate status buildup into excellent pure Arcane options.
  • Huge variety of viable weapon classes and playstyles.
  • Excellent synergy with the Dragon Communion Seal and Dragon Communion Incantations.
  • Strong options for both fast status-focused builds and heavy-hitting melee builds.
  • Shadow of the Erdtree adds several powerful Arcane weapons that don't rely entirely on Bleed.
  • Arcane also increases Discovery, making enemy item drops easier to farm.

Cons

  • Arcane does not improve every status effect, so understanding your weapon's scaling is important.
  • Many of the strongest unique Arcane weapons have additional Strength or Dexterity requirements.
  • Trying to use too many Arcane weapons on one character can spread your attributes too thin.
  • Enemies immune or resistant to Bleed can significantly reduce the effectiveness of status-heavy setups.
  • Several of the strongest Arcane options are obtained relatively late in the game or in Shadow of the Erdtree.
  • Arcane builds can vary dramatically depending on the weapon, making a single universal stat distribution difficult.

Starting Class, Attribute Leveling and Distribution

Arcane builds can vary significantly depending on the weapon you choose. A fast Bleed weapon may require additional Dexterity, while heavier DLC weapons can require substantial Strength. For a general Arcane build, however, the goal is to reach your weapon requirements and then invest heavily into Arcane, Vigor, and enough Endurance to comfortably use your equipment.

Recommended Starting Class: Bandit

Bandit begins with 14 Arcane, the highest starting Arcane of any class, while also having useful Dexterity for many early Arcane weapons. This makes it the most natural starting point for a general Arcane build.

80

Early in the game, prioritize Vigor and Arcane while meeting the minimum requirements of your chosen weapon. There is little reason to invest heavily in Strength or Dexterity unless the weapon you actually want to use requires it.

At level 50, 30 Vigor and 30 Arcane provide a strong foundation. This gives you enough survivability for early and midgame encounters while allowing Arcane-scaling weapons and status setups to begin benefiting meaningfully from your primary attribute.

From there, continue raising Vigor alongside Arcane. By level 100, 45 Vigor and 55 Arcane provide an excellent balance between survivability and offense, while additional Endurance gives you more Stamina and Equip Load.

At level 150, 60 Vigor and 80 Arcane creates a powerful general-purpose Arcane character. This works especially well with Occult-infused weapons, which convert Arcane into strong Physical scaling while also allowing innate Blood Loss or Poison buildup to scale with Arcane.

Mind remains relatively low because this progression assumes a primarily melee-focused character. Increase it if your chosen weapon relies heavily on its Skill.

Dexterity / Arcane Alternative

Many of Elden Ring's most recognizable Arcane weapons also require substantial Dexterity.

Weapons such as Rivers of Blood, Eleonora's Poleblade, Bloody Helice, Morgott's Cursed Sword, and Obsidian Lamina naturally push the build toward a DEX/ARC hybrid. Their Arcane requirements vary considerably, so you should build around the specific weapon rather than following one universal split.

For these builds, prioritize:

60 Vigor → Weapon Requirements → Arcane → Dexterity → Endurance

Arcane should generally remain your primary investment if the goal is still an Arcane-focused build. Once Arcane reaches the target appropriate for your weapon, additional levels can be moved into Dexterity to further improve weapon damage.

Avoid leveling Dexterity simply because you're using Bleed. Dexterity does not inherently increase Blood Loss buildup; its value comes from the scaling and requirements of the weapon you're using.

Strength / Arcane Alternative

Shadow of the Erdtree significantly expanded the possibilities for Strength/Arcane builds.

Weapons such as the Bloodfiend's Arm and Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword allow Arcane characters to move away from the traditional fast Bleed playstyle and instead use extremely heavy weapons. Bloodfiend's Arm, for example, requires 28 Strength and 16 Arcane when one-handed, while Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword is another dedicated STR/ARC option.

For these builds, prioritize:

60 Vigor → Weapon Requirements → Arcane → Strength → Endurance

You'll generally want more Endurance than the standard Arcane progression because these weapons and their accompanying armor setups are considerably heavier.

The exact Strength/Arcane distribution should depend on the weapon. Don't automatically push Strength to 80 just because you're using a large weapon; several of these weapons receive substantial value from Arcane as well.

Faith / Arcane Alternative

Arcane also supports one of Elden Ring's strongest hybrid casting setups through the Dragon Communion Seal.

A FAI/ARC character sacrifices some melee specialization to gain access to Dragon Communion Incantations and other Faith-based utility.

For a dedicated Dragon Communion caster, a more balanced Faith/Arcane distribution is preferable to the 80 Arcane melee progression shown above.

If you only want a few Incantations as support, simply meet their minimum Faith requirements and continue prioritizing Arcane. If Dragon Communion becomes the centerpiece of the build, transition toward a proper Faith/Arcane hybrid instead.

How Much Arcane Do You Need?

You don't always need to reach 80 Arcane.

For a pure Arcane or Occult-focused melee build, pushing toward 80 can provide excellent weapon damage.

For Blood or Poison setups, status buildup and raw weapon damage don't necessarily scale identically, so continuing to dump levels into Arcane purely for status buildup eventually becomes less efficient.

For hybrid weapons, stop treating Arcane as your only damage stat once additional investment into Strength or Dexterity begins providing better returns.

The main rule is:

Meet your weapon requirements first, build enough Vigor to survive, then invest into Arcane and whichever secondary attribute your weapon actually scales with.

Arcane is particularly flexible because it can support Physical damage, Blood Loss, Poison, unique weapons, and spellcasting — but trying to support all of them on the same level 150 character will usually make the build worse rather than better.

Best Weapons for Arcane Builds

Arcane has one of the largest and most diverse weapon selections in Elden Ring. While many Arcane weapons specialize in Blood Loss, the attribute also supports powerful Physical, Magic, Fire, Poison, and hybrid weapons.

The best weapon depends heavily on whether you're playing pure Arcane, Dexterity/Arcane, or Strength/Arcane. For a general Arcane build, prioritize weapons that gain significant value from Arcane without requiring excessive investment into another damage attribute.

Best Early-Game Arcane Weapons

Reduvia — Best Early Arcane Weapon

Reduvia — Best Early Arcane Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 5 / Dexterity - 13 / Arcane - 13

Reduvia is one of the best weapons available to an Arcane character at the beginning of the game. Bandit already meets all of its requirements, allowing you to use it immediately after obtaining it.

It has innate Blood Loss that scales with Arcane, while its Unique Skill, Reduvia Blood Blade, fires blood projectiles that deal damage and rapidly build Bleed from range.

The Dagger's short melee range is its main weakness, but its low requirements, excellent status buildup, and ranged Skill make it capable of carrying an Arcane build through a large portion of the game.

Location: Dropped by Bloody Finger Nerijus near Murkwater Cave in Limgrave.

Regalia of Eochaid — Best Early Non-Bleed Arcane Weapon

Regalia of Eochaid — Best Early Non-Bleed Arcane Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 12 / Dexterity - 18 / Arcane - 15

The Regalia of Eochaid is an excellent example of an Arcane weapon that doesn't rely on Blood Loss.

It deals both Physical and Magic damage, with Arcane contributing to both damage types. This makes Arcane particularly efficient for increasing its overall Attack Power.

Its Unique Skill, Eochaid's Dancing Blade, launches the sword forward in a rapidly spinning multi-hit attack. This works particularly well with equipment that rewards successive attacks.

The 18 Dexterity requirement requires some additional investment from Bandit's starting stats, but it remains a strong early option if you want something different from a traditional Bleed setup.

Location: Found in the cemetery above Gaol Cave in Caelid.

Occult-Innate Bleed Weapons — Best Flexible Progression

Once you gain access to the Occult affinity, many regular weapons with innate Blood Loss become excellent Arcane weapons.

Weapons such as the Uchigatana, Nagakiba, Great Knife, Flamberge, and Grave Scythe can retain their innate Blood Loss while gaining strong Arcane-based Physical scaling.

Because the weapon now has Arcane scaling, its innate Blood Loss can also benefit from your Arcane investment.

This makes Occult one of the best ways to build a primarily Arcane-focused character without relying exclusively on unique weapons.

Best Weapons to Build Around

Bloodfiend's Arm — Best Heavy Arcane Weapon

Bloodfiend's Arm — Best Heavy Arcane Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 28 / Dexterity - 11 / Arcane - 16

The Bloodfiend's Arm completely changes the traditional idea of what an Arcane build looks like.

Instead of relying on rapid attacks, this Colossal Weapon delivers enormous individual hits and powerful charged Heavy Attacks. It can also change its affinity, allowing it to take advantage of different Arcane-oriented setups.

Its combination of huge raw damage, status potential, stance pressure, and strong Arcane synergy makes it one of the standout DLC weapons for Arcane characters.

The high Strength requirement means it fits best on a STR/ARC hybrid, although two-handing can reduce the amount of actual Strength investment required.

Location: Dropped by Bloodfiends wielding the weapon in Prospect Town and other areas of Shadow of the Erdtree.

Bloody Helice — Best Pure Arcane Duelist Weapon

Bloody Helice — Best Pure Arcane Duelist Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 16 / Dexterity - 19 / Arcane - 17

The Bloody Helice is one of the strongest weapons for a melee-focused Arcane character.

Its Arcane scaling contributes both to its Physical damage and Blood Loss buildup, making additional Arcane particularly valuable. At high Arcane investment, it can achieve excellent damage without requiring an equally large Dexterity investment.

Its defining feature is Dynast's Finesse, an evasive backward movement with invincibility frames that can transition into a powerful lunging counterattack.

This gives Bloody Helice a more reactive playstyle than most status weapons, rewarding good timing rather than simply attacking as quickly as possible.

Location: Found in a chest after defeating the Sanguine Noble beneath Writheblood Ruins in Altus Plateau.

Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword — Best STR/ARC Unique Weapon

Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword — Best STRARC Unique Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 35 / Dexterity - 10 / Arcane - 19

The Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword is one of the best additions to Strength/Arcane builds from Shadow of the Erdtree.

It deals Physical and Magic damage, with Arcane contributing to both damage types. This allows even heavily Arcane-focused characters to achieve excellent Attack Power.

Its Unique Skill, White Light Charge, launches you forward at high speed before allowing a follow-up explosion. This gives a normally slow Colossal Sword surprisingly strong mobility and burst damage.

The 35 Strength requirement is substantial, but two-handing reduces the Strength investment necessary to wield it effectively.

Location: Obtained from the altar at the end of Ruined Forge of Starfall Past in Scadu Altus.

Eleonora's Poleblade — Best DEX/ARC Multi-Hit Weapon

Eleonora's Poleblade — Best DEXARC Multi-Hit Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 12 / Dexterity - 21 / Arcane - 19

Eleonora's Poleblade combines Physical and Fire damage with innate Blood Loss and an extremely aggressive Twinblade moveset.

Arcane is particularly valuable because it contributes to both Physical and Fire damage while also increasing the weapon's Blood Loss buildup.

Its Unique Skill, Bloodblade Dance, performs a rapid sequence of attacks before creating distance, making it excellent for triggering Bleed and successive-attack bonuses.

It requires more Dexterity than a pure Arcane character naturally wants, so it is best suited to a dedicated DEX/ARC hybrid.

Location: Dropped by Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger, at the Second Church of Marika in Altus Plateau.

Putrescence Cleaver — Best Arcane/Frost Weapon

Putrescence Cleaver — Best ArcaneFrost Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 28 / Dexterity - 10 / Arcane - 15

The Putrescence Cleaver is a DLC Greataxe dealing Physical and Magic damage while also carrying innate Frostbite buildup.

Arcane is extremely valuable because it contributes to both of the weapon's damage types, allowing a heavily Arcane-focused build to achieve excellent raw damage.

However, there is an important distinction: its Frostbite buildup does not scale with Arcane. The buildup remains fixed regardless of your Arcane investment or weapon upgrade level.

Its Unique Skill, Spinning Guillotine, provides an aggressive multi-hit attack that can be extended with additional inputs.

Location: Obtained by exchanging the Remembrance of Putrescence after defeating the Putrescent Knight in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Obsidian Lamina — Best DLC DEX/ARC Scythe

Obsidian Lamina — Best DLC DEXARC Scythe

Requirements: Strength - 12 / Dexterity - 25 / Arcane - 17

The Obsidian Lamina provides Arcane builds with a unique Scythe built around mobility, Bleed, and evasive counterattacks.

Its Unique Skill, Dynastic Sickleplay, combines evasive movement with sweeping follow-up attacks, creating a fluid hit-and-run playstyle.

The relatively high Dexterity requirement makes it unsuitable for our pure Arcane progression without adjustment, but it is an excellent endgame weapon for a DEX/ARC hybrid.

Location: Obtained near the end of Sir Ansbach's questline in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Rivers of Blood — Best Accessible DEX/ARC Katana

Rivers of Blood — Best Accessible DEXARC Katana

Requirements: Strength - 12 / Dexterity - 18 / Arcane - 20

Rivers of Blood remains a strong Arcane weapon even though it no longer dominates Elden Ring the way it once did.

It deals Physical and Fire damage, has innate Blood Loss, and uses the Unique Skill Corpse Piler to perform an extended sequence of blood-infused slashes.

Its combination of range, Bleed pressure, and relatively manageable requirements makes it a strong DEX/ARC option.

However, it should be treated as one strong Arcane weapon rather than the default answer to every Arcane build.

Location: Dropped by Bloody Finger Okina at the Church of Repose in the Mountaintops of the Giants.

Marais Executioner's Sword — Best Skill-Focused STR/ARC Weapon

Marais Executioner's Sword — Best Skill-Focused STRARC Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 24 / Dexterity - 14 / Arcane - 23

The Marais Executioner's Sword is another excellent Arcane weapon that doesn't rely on Bleed.

Its Unique Skill, Eochaid's Dancing Blade, launches the Greatsword forward while rapidly spinning, potentially hitting an enemy many times during a single cast.

This makes it extremely powerful when combined with successive-attack bonuses and Skill damage buffs.

Because of its Strength requirement, it naturally fits a STR/ARC hybrid, while Arcane contributes strongly to the weapon's mixed damage.

Location: Dropped by Elemer of the Briar in the Shaded Castle.

Ripple Crescent Halberd — Best Pure Arcane Utility Weapon

Ripple Crescent Halberd — Best Pure Arcane Utility Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 12 / Dexterity - 12 / Arcane - 20

The Ripple Crescent Halberd has exceptionally strong Arcane scaling, eventually reaching S scaling in Arcane.

What makes it especially interesting is that it can still be buffed despite its innate Arcane scaling. Arcane can increase applicable Blood Loss, Poison, and Sleep buildup from weapon buffs, giving the Halberd excellent status versatility.

Scarlet Rot is an exception: Rot buildup does not scale with Arcane.

Its excellent reach and low STR/DEX requirements make it particularly attractive for a character following the pure Arcane progression.

Location: Dropped by Second-Generation Albinaurics wielding the weapon, including those found in Liurnia, Mohgwyn Palace, and the Consecrated Snowfield.

Honorable Mentions

Morgott's Cursed Sword — Excellent DEX/ARC Curved Greatsword with a powerful Unique Skill, but its 35 Dexterity requirement pushes it heavily toward a dedicated hybrid build.

Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear — Still an extremely powerful STR/ARC weapon with Blood Loss and excellent AoE through Bloodboon Ritual, although its slower Great Spear playstyle is more specialized.

Flowerstone Gavel — Excellent Arcane-scaling DLC weapon with a ranged Unique Skill that can reduce an enemy's Lightning Damage Negation. Particularly interesting for Arcane/Dragon hybrid characters.

Poisoned Hand — A DLC Fist weapon designed around Poison that provides another way to build Arcane around something other than Bleed.

Ripple Blade — Similar to Ripple Crescent Halberd, with huge Arcane scaling and the ability to enhance applicable status buffs. It trades the Halberd's reach for a compact Axe moveset.

Occult Nagakiba/Uchigatana — Some of the simplest and most effective customizable Arcane weapons. Their innate Bleed works naturally with Occult affinity, while customizable Ashes of War provide far more flexibility than unique weapons.

Bloodfiend's Fork — A useful DLC Spear with innate Blood Loss that can change affinity and Ash of War, making it another good candidate for an Occult setup.

Ashes of War

Ashes of War are particularly important for Arcane builds because they allow regular weapons to take advantage of Blood, Poison, and Occult affinities. This gives Arcane characters access to a much larger weapon pool than the unique Arcane weapons alone.

The best Ash of War depends on whether you want to focus on Blood Loss, Poison, raw Arcane-scaled damage, or utility.

Seppuku — Best for Blood Loss Buildup

Seppuku damages the user before coating the weapon in blood, temporarily increasing its Blood Loss buildup and Attack Power.

It remains one of the strongest options for weapons designed around repeatedly triggering Blood Loss, particularly on fast weapons that can take advantage of the additional buildup.

Seppuku is most valuable on a dedicated Bleed setup rather than a general Occult build, but it remains one of the strongest status-focused tools available to Arcane characters.

Location: Dropped by an invisible Teardrop Scarab near the Freezing Lake in the Mountaintops of the Giants.

Blood Tax — Best Multi-Hit Blood Ash of War

Blood Tax performs a rapid sequence of thrusting attacks that build Blood Loss while also restoring HP when the attacks connect.

The multi-hit nature of the Skill makes it excellent for triggering status effects and successive-attack bonuses, while the healing provides additional sustain during aggressive melee encounters.

It works particularly well on compatible thrusting weapons and gives Arcane builds a strong combination of damage, status buildup, and survivability.

Location: Obtained from a Teardrop Scarab inside Mohgwyn Palace.

Bloody Slash — Best Early Blood Ash of War

Bloody Slash provides Arcane characters with an extremely accessible source of Blood damage early in the game.

The Skill sacrifices a small amount of HP to unleash a powerful ranged blood slash. More importantly for early progression, obtaining Bloody Slash also gives you access to the Blood affinity through this Ash of War.

This makes it one of the easiest ways to begin turning regular weapons into status-focused Arcane weapons.

Location: Dropped by the Godrick Knight at Fort Haight in Limgrave.

Poisonous Mist — Best Poison Ash of War

Poisonous Mist releases a cloud of Poison before coating the weapon with additional Poison buildup.

It is an excellent option for Arcane characters who want to move away from the usual Bleed-focused playstyle. When used with an appropriate Arcane-scaling setup, Poison buildup can benefit from your Arcane investment.

Poison also synergizes with equipment such as Kindred of Rot's Exultation and Mushroom Crown, giving Arcane builds another way to activate powerful temporary damage bonuses.

Location: Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab southeast of Castle Morne Rampart in the Weeping Peninsula.

The Poison Flower Blooms Twice — Best DLC Poison Ash of War

The Poison Flower Blooms Twice is one of the strongest additions to Poison-focused Arcane builds from Shadow of the Erdtree.

The Skill performs an airborne kick that can inflict Scarlet Rot. More importantly, hitting an enemy already affected by Poison or Scarlet Rot consumes the status and converts it into a powerful burst of damage.

This allows an Arcane Poison build to alternate between applying a damage-over-time effect and consuming it for immediate burst damage.

It is especially effective against enemies with large health pools where the percentage-based component of the detonation can provide significant value.

Location: Dropped by a Lesser Kindred of Rot in Rauh Base in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Spectral Lance — Best Ranged Arcane Ash of War

Spectral Lance throws a spectral spear at an enemy, giving melee Arcane characters an excellent ranged option.

The Skill scales primarily with Arcane, making it particularly well suited to a character investing heavily into the stat. It also deals strong stance damage, allowing you to pressure enemies and potentially create critical-hit opportunities from range.

This makes Spectral Lance especially useful on Occult Spear and Great Spear setups that otherwise lack a reliable ranged attack.

Location: Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab in Raya Lucaria Academy.

Lifesteal Fist — Best Arcane Utility Ash of War

Lifesteal Fist grabs a human-sized enemy, dealing damage while restoring HP.

The Skill scales strongly with Arcane and can provide substantial healing when used successfully, making it a thematic and useful option for Arcane characters.

Its biggest limitation is that the grab only works against appropriate humanoid targets, so it isn't a universal boss-killing Skill. Against compatible enemies, however, it provides excellent sustain.

Location: Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab on the road toward Caelid Highway South.

Cragblade — Best Raw Damage Option

Cragblade coats the weapon in rock, increasing its Physical damage and stance damage.

It has no direct status interaction, but that is exactly why it deserves a place in an Arcane guide. Occult builds can achieve excellent Physical damage without relying entirely on Blood Loss or Poison, and Cragblade reinforces that playstyle.

It is particularly useful against enemies that are immune or highly resistant to your usual status effects.

Location: Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab near the Impassable Greatbridge in Caelid.

Choosing Your Affinity

The Ash of War itself is only part of the decision. Your weapon affinity determines how Arcane interacts with the weapon, and choosing the correct affinity can be just as important as choosing the Skill.

Occult

Occult is the best general-purpose affinity for a high-Arcane melee build.

It provides strong Arcane scaling to the weapon's Physical damage. On weapons that already have innate Blood Loss or Poison, the existing status buildup can also benefit from Arcane once the weapon gains Arcane scaling.

This makes weapons such as Uchigatana, Nagakiba, Grave Scythe, Flamberge, and Great Knife particularly strong Occult candidates.

Blood

Blood affinity adds substantial Blood Loss buildup and Arcane scaling to compatible weapons.

It is the better choice when your primary objective is triggering Bleed as quickly as possible, but the tradeoff is generally lower raw Physical damage than an optimized Occult setup.

Use Blood when status application is the priority and Occult when you want stronger regular damage alongside innate Bleed.

Poison

Poison affinity adds Poison buildup and Arcane scaling, allowing Arcane to contribute to the status application.

Poison deals its damage over time rather than producing Bleed's immediate burst, but it has excellent synergy with Kindred of Rot's Exultation, Mushroom Crown, and The Poison Flower Blooms Twice.

This makes Poison a legitimate alternative for players who want an Arcane status build that isn't centered entirely around Blood Loss.

Which Ash of War Should You Use?

For a general Occult Arcane build, choose an Ash of War based primarily on the weapon's moveset and whatever utility your setup is missing.

  • For Bleed, Seppuku and Blood Tax are excellent dedicated options.
  • For Poison, Poisonous Mist and The Poison Flower Blooms Twice provide the strongest direct synergy.
  • For pure Arcane damage, Spectral Lance and general-purpose Physical Ashes of War can provide excellent value without relying on status effects at all.

Arcane is at its best when you take advantage of its flexibility rather than forcing every weapon into the same Bleed setup.

Best Armor for Arcane Builds

Arcane builds can support several very different playstyles, so there is no single armor set that is best for every Arcane character. Bleed and Poison setups have headpieces that directly reward their status effects, while more general Arcane builds can focus on raw damage, defense, and Poise.

For most builds, prioritize the relevant special effect first and then use your remaining armor slots to maintain good defenses while staying at Medium Equip Load.

White Mask — Best for Bleed Arcane Builds

White Mask — Best for Bleed Arcane Builds

The White Mask is the best headpiece for Arcane builds centered around Blood Loss.

When Blood Loss occurs nearby, the White Mask temporarily increases your Attack Power by 10% for 20 seconds. Since Bleed builds naturally trigger Blood Loss throughout combat, the effect requires very little additional setup.

It also stacks with Lord of Blood's Exultation, allowing a single Bleed proc to activate both bonuses simultaneously.

Only the headpiece is required for the effect, so the rest of your armor can be chosen based on defense, Poise, or additional damage bonuses.

Location: Dropped by one of the Nameless White Mask invaders in Mohgwyn Palace. Make sure to obtain it before defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood, as the invaders will no longer appear afterward.

Mushroom Crown — Best for Poison Arcane Builds

Mushroom Crown — Best for Poison Arcane Builds

The Mushroom Crown is the Poison equivalent of the White Mask and is the best headpiece for Arcane builds centered around Poison.

When Poison or Scarlet Rot occurs nearby, it temporarily increases your Attack Power by 10% for 20 seconds.

This works extremely well with Poison-affinity weapons, Poisonous Mist, and The Poison Flower Blooms Twice. It also stacks with Kindred of Rot's Exultation, allowing Poison-focused Arcane builds to activate multiple damage bonuses simultaneously.

As with the White Mask, only the headpiece is necessary.

Location: Found on a corpse in the Lake of Rot.

Rakshasa Set — Best General Offensive Armor

Rakshasa Set

The Rakshasa Set is one of the strongest general offensive armor options introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Each piece increases the damage you deal by 2%, allowing the full set to provide an 8% damage increase. This bonus applies regardless of whether you're using Bleed, Poison, Occult weapons, or one of the many unique Arcane weapons.

The set does make you effectively take more damage compared with similarly protective armor, so the additional offense comes with a survivability tradeoff.

It can also be mixed with the White Mask or Mushroom Crown, allowing you to combine a status-specific headpiece with the offensive bonuses from the remaining Rakshasa pieces.

Location: Dropped by Rakshasa in the Eastern Nameless Mausoleum in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Gravebird's Blackquill Armor — Best for Jump Attack Builds

Gravebird's Blackquill Armor

The Gravebird's Blackquill Armor increases the damage of jump attacks by 10%.

This is particularly useful for heavier Arcane weapons such as the Bloodfiend's Arm, where jumping attacks can provide excellent raw damage and stance pressure.

It can also be combined with the Claw Talisman for a dedicated jump-attack setup.

This isn't necessary for most Arcane builds, but it is a strong specialized option for heavy STR/ARC characters.

Location: Found in Rauh Ancient Ruins in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Solitude Set — Best Defensive Option

Solitude Set

The Solitude Set provides excellent Physical defenses and very high Poise, making it one of the strongest defensive armor choices available in Shadow of the Erdtree.

This is particularly valuable for heavier STR/ARC builds, where weapons such as Bloodfiend's Arm or Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword naturally encourage a more committed melee playstyle.

The complete set is extremely heavy, so additional Endurance or the Great-Jar's Arsenal may be necessary to maintain Medium Equip Load.

Location: Dropped by the Blackgaol Knight in the Western Nameless Mausoleum in Gravesite Plain.

High-Poise Mixed Armor — Best General Setup

For most Arcane characters, mixing armor pieces is better than forcing a complete set.

Start with the headpiece that supports your build:

  • White Mask → Blood Loss
  • Mushroom Crown → Poison
  • No special headpiece → General Arcane

Then use your remaining armor slots to reach a comfortable amount of defense and Poise without entering Heavy Load.

This is particularly useful because Arcane weapon weights vary enormously. A Reduvia build can comfortably wear significantly heavier armor than a character carrying the Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword.

Choosing Your Armor

For a Bleed-focused Arcane build:

  • White Mask + defensive or Rakshasa pieces

For a Poison-focused Arcane build:

  • Mushroom Crown + defensive or Rakshasa pieces

For a general Occult or unique Arcane weapon build:

  • Rakshasa Set or high-Poise mixed armor

For a heavy STR/ARC build:

  • Solitude pieces or Gravebird's Blackquill Armor for jump-attack setups

Armor should support the way your chosen Arcane weapon actually deals damage. Don't wear White Mask simply because you're leveling Arcane if your weapon isn't regularly triggering Blood Loss.

Best Talismans for Arcane Builds

Arcane builds can benefit from a wide variety of Talismans depending on whether you focus on Bleed, Poison, successive attacks, weapon Skills, or heavy weapons. Unlike a dedicated Bleed build, there is no single four-Talisman setup that works optimally for every Arcane weapon.

Lord of Blood's Exultation — Best for Bleed Arcane Builds

Lord of Blood's Exultation

Lord of Blood's Exultation is one of the strongest Talismans for any Arcane build that regularly triggers Blood Loss.

Whenever Blood Loss occurs nearby, it increases your Attack Power by 20% for 20 seconds. Since Arcane Bleed builds can trigger Blood Loss extremely consistently, this bonus can remain active throughout large portions of a fight.

It also stacks with the White Mask, allowing a single Bleed proc to activate both effects.

Location: Dropped by Esgar, Priest of Blood in the Leyndell Catacombs.

Kindred of Rot's Exultation — Best for Poison Arcane Builds

Kindred of Rot's Exultation — Best Overall Scarlet Rot Talisman

Kindred of Rot's Exultation fills the same role for Poison-focused Arcane builds.

Whenever Poison or Scarlet Rot occurs nearby, your Attack Power increases by 20% for 20 seconds.

This makes it an excellent choice alongside Poison-affinity weapons, Poisonous Mist, and The Poison Flower Blooms Twice. Combining it with the Mushroom Crown provides another powerful damage boost whenever Poison activates.

Location: Dropped by the Kindred of Rot boss in Seethewater Cave.

Shard of Alexander — Best for Weapon Skill Builds

Shard of Alexander

The Shard of Alexander increases the damage of weapon Skills by 15%.

Many of the best Arcane weapons rely heavily on their Unique Skills, making this one of the most universally useful offensive Talismans for the build.

Weapons such as Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword, Marais Executioner's Sword, Eleonora's Poleblade, Bloody Helice, Rivers of Blood, and Obsidian Lamina can all benefit when their Skills form a major part of your playstyle.

Location: Obtained at the end of Iron Fist Alexander's questline in Crumbling Farum Azula.

Rotten Winged Sword Insignia — Best for Fast Multi-Hit Weapons

Rotten Winged Sword Insignia

The Rotten Winged Sword Insignia increases Attack Power as you land successive attacks.

It works particularly well with fast Arcane weapons and multi-hit Skills, including Eleonora's Poleblade and Marais Executioner's Sword.

Because many Bleed weapons naturally rely on landing repeated hits to trigger Blood Loss, the bonus often builds at the same time as the enemy's Bleed meter.

Location: Obtained near the end of Millicent's questline by assisting her.

Millicent's Prosthesis — Best DEX/ARC Multi-Hit Alternative

Millicent's Prosthesis

Millicent's Prosthesis increases Dexterity by 5 while also increasing Attack Power with successive attacks.

This makes it especially valuable for DEX/ARC builds, where the additional Dexterity can help meet weapon requirements while the successive-attack effect complements fast weapons.

It is particularly useful for weapons such as Eleonora's Poleblade, Rivers of Blood, and other aggressive DEX/ARC setups.

Location: Obtained through Millicent's questline by challenging and defeating her near the end of the quest.

Two-Handed Sword Talisman — Best for Heavy STR/ARC Weapons

Two-Handed Sword Talisman — Best for Heavy Rot Weapons

The Two-Handed Sword Talisman increases the damage of regular attacks performed while holding a weapon with two hands.

This is an excellent option for heavy Arcane weapons such as the Bloodfiend's Arm, Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword, and Putrescence Cleaver when you're primarily using their normal and Heavy Attacks.

It also fits naturally into STR/ARC builds, where two-handing can help meet high Strength requirements while increasing effective Strength.

Location: Found in a chest at Temple Town Ruins in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Axe Talisman — Best for Charged Heavy Attack Builds

Axe Talisman — Best for Charged Heavy Attack Builds

The Axe Talisman increases the damage of charged Heavy Attacks.

This is particularly relevant for Bloodfiend's Arm, which can make excellent use of charged Heavy Attacks as part of its status and stance-breaking playstyle.

It is less useful for fast DEX/ARC setups, so this should be treated as a specialized choice for heavy weapons rather than a universal Arcane Talisman.

Location: Found in a cellar beneath the Mistwood Ruins in Limgrave.

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman — Best Defensive Option

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman — Best Defensive Option

The Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman significantly reduces incoming Physical damage in PvE.

Arcane builds often fight aggressively at close range, especially when trying to trigger Blood Loss or Poison. The additional survivability makes this one of the safest flexible fourth-slot options.

It is also valuable against enemies where your status effects are ineffective and fights naturally take longer.

Location: Found in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.

Choosing Your Talismans

For a Bleed-focused Arcane build:

  • Lord of Blood's Exultation + Rotten Winged Sword Insignia + Shard of Alexander + flexible fourth slot

For a Poison-focused Arcane build:

  • Kindred of Rot's Exultation + Shard of Alexander + flexible damage Talismans

For a DEX/ARC multi-hit build:

  • Rotten Winged Sword Insignia + Millicent's Prosthesis + Shard of Alexander

For a heavy STR/ARC build:

  • Two-Handed Sword Talisman + Axe Talisman + Shard of Alexander + flexible fourth slot

The final slot should usually be chosen around the weapon and encounter. Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman provides excellent survivability, while more specialized Talismans can push a particular attack type even further.

Most importantly, choose Talismans based on what your weapon actually does. Lord of Blood's Exultation provides little value to an Arcane weapon that doesn't cause Bleed, just as successive-attack bonuses make little sense for a build centered around slow charged Heavy Attacks.

Arcane Playstyle Tips

Arcane builds are at their strongest when you build around the specific strengths of your weapon rather than treating Arcane as another name for Bleed. The attribute supports several different playstyles, and understanding how Arcane interacts with affinities, status effects, and weapon scaling is key to getting the most out of the build.

Choose Occult or Blood for the Right Reason

Occult and Blood affinities serve different purposes.

Occult generally provides stronger raw Physical damage on a high-Arcane character and is particularly effective on weapons that already have innate Blood Loss or Poison.

Blood affinity sacrifices some regular weapon damage in exchange for much higher Blood Loss buildup, making it better when triggering Bleed as quickly as possible is your main objective.

Against enemies vulnerable to Bleed, Blood can provide enormous burst damage. Against resistant or immune enemies, Occult's stronger regular damage becomes much more reliable.

Don't Assume Every Status Scales With Arcane

Arcane only increases status buildup when the source of that status has appropriate Arcane scaling.

This is particularly important when experimenting with different weapons. Simply seeing Blood Loss, Poison, Frostbite, or Scarlet Rot on a weapon does not automatically mean leveling Arcane will increase its buildup.

Always consider the weapon's scaling and affinity before investing additional levels purely for status application.

Take Advantage of Innate Status Weapons

Weapons with innate Blood Loss or Poison are excellent candidates for Occult affinity.

Occult adds strong Arcane scaling while allowing the weapon to retain its existing status effect. This creates a strong balance between raw weapon damage and status buildup without committing entirely to Blood or Poison affinity.

Weapons such as the Uchigatana, Nagakiba, Grave Scythe, and Flamberge are great examples.

Don't Rely Entirely on Bleed

Blood Loss is extremely powerful, but some enemies are highly resistant or completely immune to it.

A good Arcane build should still deal strong damage when Bleed isn't available. Occult weapons and several unique Arcane weapons can produce excellent raw damage, while DLC options such as Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword and Putrescence Cleaver give Arcane characters alternatives that don't depend on repeatedly triggering Blood Loss.

If a boss doesn't Bleed, adapt rather than continuing to force the status.

Use Poison Differently From Bleed

Poison isn't designed to produce the same immediate burst damage as Blood Loss.

Instead, apply Poison and allow the damage-over-time effect to work in the background while continuing to attack normally.

Equipment such as Kindred of Rot's Exultation and Mushroom Crown also turns Poison activation into an offensive buff, while The Poison Flower Blooms Twice allows you to consume an active Poison effect for burst damage.

Build Around Your Weapon Requirements

Arcane weapons have wildly different Strength and Dexterity requirements.

A Reduvia character needs very little additional investment, while weapons such as Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword, Bloodfiend's Arm, Morgott's Cursed Sword, and Obsidian Lamina require significant investment into another offensive stat.

Meet the requirements for the weapon you actually want to use, then invest in the attributes that provide the best returns for that weapon.

Don't level Strength and Dexterity just to keep every Arcane weapon available on the same character.

Match Your Playstyle to Your Arcane Weapon

Not every Arcane weapon rewards aggressive multi-hit gameplay.

Reduvia and Eleonora's Poleblade reward fast attacks and status pressure.

Bloody Helice rewards timing and counterattacks through Dynast's Finesse.

Bloodfiend's Arm rewards charged Heavy Attacks and stance pressure.

Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword combines heavy melee attacks with the mobility and burst damage of White Light Charge.

Marais Executioner's Sword can be built heavily around its multi-hit Unique Skill.

Your Talismans and armor should reflect these differences rather than using the same Bleed setup for every weapon.

Use Your Ash of War to Cover Weaknesses

Infusible weapons give Arcane builds enormous flexibility.

A fast Occult weapon may benefit from an Ash of War that provides stance damage, while a slow weapon may benefit from additional mobility or range. Spectral Lance can provide ranged pressure, while Cragblade improves raw damage and stance damage.

Your Ash of War doesn't need to inflict a status effect just because you're playing Arcane.

Take Advantage of Status Damage Buffs

If you're using Bleed, Lord of Blood's Exultation and White Mask can provide major temporary Attack Power bonuses whenever Blood Loss occurs nearby.

Poison builds can achieve a similar effect through Kindred of Rot's Exultation and Mushroom Crown.

Once these bonuses activate, take advantage of the damage window rather than focusing exclusively on triggering the status again.

Keep Enough Stamina to Stay Aggressive

Many Arcane builds rely on repeated attacks, charged Heavy Attacks, or expensive weapon Skills.

Don't exhaust your entire Stamina bar trying to trigger one more Bleed or Poison proc. Always leave enough Stamina to dodge, reposition, or continue pressure after an enemy attack.

Heavy STR/ARC builds may also want additional Endurance to support their weapon weight and armor.

Use Discovery to Your Advantage

Arcane also increases Discovery, improving your chance of receiving item drops from enemies.

This has no direct effect on combat, but it makes Arcane characters naturally better at farming weapons, armor, crafting materials, and other rare enemy drops.

The Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot and Silver Scarab can further increase Discovery when farming specific equipment.

Use Dragon Communion if Your Build Supports It

Arcane has excellent synergy with the Dragon Communion Seal, giving melee Arcane characters the option to add Dragon Communion Incantations with additional Faith investment.

You don't need to turn every Arcane character into a full caster. Even meeting the requirements for a small selection of Incantations can add useful elemental damage or status options.

If Dragon Communion becomes your main source of damage, however, a dedicated Faith/Arcane distribution is more appropriate than the 80 Arcane melee progression.

Adapt Instead of Forcing One Strategy

Arcane's greatest strength is versatility.

Bleed destroys enemies vulnerable to Blood Loss. Poison provides sustained damage and powerful equipment synergies. Occult provides reliable raw damage. STR/ARC weapons offer heavy attacks and stance pressure, while DEX/ARC weapons provide speed and mobility.

Use the part of Arcane's toolkit that best fits your weapon and the enemy you're fighting rather than forcing every encounter into the same status strategy.

Arcane is much more than a Bleed stat. Build around your weapon's actual scaling, understand when Arcane affects status buildup, and use the attribute's enormous weapon variety to adapt to different encounters.
