Elden Ring Lightning Build - Stats, Weapons, Skills & More

Updated on Aug 23, 2026
Aug 23, 2026

Overview

Lightning builds are among the strongest Faith-based setups in Elden Ring, combining fast ranged Incantations, powerful close-range lightning storms, and excellent single-target boss damage.

The core of this build revolves around Dragon Cult Incantations. These spells provide several different ways to deal Lightning damage, ranging from the reliable Lightning Spear to devastating attacks such as Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike.

Our primary attribute is Faith, which increases the Incantation Scaling of our Sacred Seal and gives us access to progressively stronger Dragon Cult Incantations.

The Gravel Stone Seal is particularly important because it increases the damage of Dragon Cult Incantations by 15%, making it the natural Sacred Seal for a dedicated Lightning build.

Lightning also has an important environmental advantage. Enemies standing in water or rain have reduced Lightning Damage Negation, while several Lightning attacks can create additional effects when striking watery surfaces.

This makes Lightning particularly effective in areas with shallow water and during rainy weather.

The build also became considerably stronger with Shadow of the Erdtree thanks to Knight's Lightning Spear, one of the best ranged Dragon Cult Incantations available. It launches a Lightning Spear alongside several additional projectiles, providing excellent single-target damage and surprisingly strong stance pressure when the entire attack connects.

At close range, Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike becomes one of our most dangerous boss-killing tools. The spell creates multiple Lightning strikes around the caster, allowing large enemies to be hit by several bolts from a single cast.

This gives Lightning builds excellent flexibility:

  • Lightning Spear → fast and reliable ranged damage
  • Knight's Lightning Spear → high single-target ranged damage
  • Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike → massive damage against large targets
  • Other Dragon Cult Incantations → AoE, close-range pressure, and utility

Rather than relying on a single spell, the build can switch between different forms of Lightning depending on the size, speed, and positioning of the enemy.

How Lightning Damage Works

Lightning is one of Elden Ring's primary elemental damage types.

For this build, most of our Lightning damage comes from Dragon Cult Incantations, meaning their damage is determined primarily by the Incantation Scaling of our Sacred Seal.

Unlike Dragon Communion Incantations, Dragon Cult spells generally require Faith rather than Arcane, allowing us to build heavily around a single offensive attribute.

Gravel Stone Seal

The Gravel Stone Seal is specifically designed for Dragon Cult Incantations.

While held in an active hand, it increases their damage by:

  • 15%

This applies to offensive Dragon Cult spells such as Lightning Spear, Knight's Lightning Spear, Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike, and several other Lightning Incantations.

One important exception is Electrify Armament. Although it belongs to the Dragon Cult category, the Gravel Stone Seal's passive bonus does not increase the weapon buff's Lightning damage.

Lightning and Water

Lightning becomes more effective when fighting around water.

Lightning attacks that hit watery surfaces can also create additional electrical effects around the point of impact. For example, Lightning Spear creates an additional small Lightning AoE when striking an enemy standing in water or the water itself.

Whenever possible, take advantage of these environments rather than treating every arena identically.

Charged Lightning Incantations

Several Lightning Incantations can be charged.

Lightning Spear, for example, increases its attack power when charged and gains an additional Lightning strike at the point of impact. This also gives it excellent synergy with the Godfrey Icon, which further increases charged spell damage.

However, charging isn't always optimal.

Against aggressive enemies, an uncharged cast may be significantly safer. The build rewards adapting your casting time to the opening rather than attempting to fully charge every attack.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent Lightning damage throughout the game.
  • Strong selection of ranged and close-range Incantations.
  • Lightning Spear is available relatively early and remains useful throughout progression.
  • Knight's Lightning Spear provides an extremely powerful DLC ranged option.
  • Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike can deal enormous damage against large bosses.
  • Gravel Stone Seal directly increases Dragon Cult Incantation damage.
  • Several Lightning Incantations can be charged for additional damage.
  • Excellent synergy with Faith-focused equipment and Talismans.
  • Lightning becomes particularly effective around water and rain.
  • Requires very little investment outside Faith for a caster-focused setup.
  • Access to Electrify Armament allows Lightning to be incorporated into melee setups as well.

Cons

  • Several of the strongest Lightning Incantations aren't available until later in the game.
  • Powerful Ancient Dragon Incantations can have long casting animations.
  • Large Lightning attacks require careful positioning to reach their full damage potential.
  • Some enemies have high Lightning resistance.
  • Frequent casting requires reasonable investment into Mind.
  • Close-range spells can leave the caster vulnerable if used during poor openings.
  • Some spells perform significantly better against large enemies than small or highly mobile targets.
  • Knight's Lightning Spear requires Shadow of the Erdtree.
  • The build becomes substantially stronger once its specialized equipment is obtained, meaning early progression is less optimized than the final setup.

Starting Class, Attribute Leveling and Distribution

Lightning builds scale primarily through Faith, making their attribute distribution relatively straightforward. Faith improves the Incantation Scaling of our Sacred Seal and provides access to increasingly powerful Dragon Cult Incantations.

Vigor and Mind are our other major priorities. Several of the strongest Lightning Incantations have significant FP costs and lengthy casting animations, so we need enough resources and survivability to use them consistently.

The Prophet is the best starting class for a dedicated Lightning caster because it begins with high Faith and Mind while wasting very few levels on attributes the build doesn't need.

Early on, prioritize Vigor and Faith, gradually increasing Mind as Dragon Cult Incantations become a larger part of your damage. Aim for approximately 18 Vigor and 22 Faith by level 25. You don't need much additional Endurance yet, since the early build can comfortably remain at Medium Equip Load with relatively light equipment.

By around level 50, 25 Vigor, 20 Mind, and 35 Faith provide a strong foundation for an Incantation-focused playstyle. At this point, Faith should become your primary offensive investment while Vigor continues increasing alongside it.

At level 100, aim for approximately 40 Vigor, 25 Mind, and 55 Faith. This provides enough HP and FP to comfortably use Dragon Cult Incantations throughout longer encounters while significantly improving their damage.

At level 150, 60 Vigor, 30 Mind, 20 Endurance, and 80 Faith create a powerful endgame Lightning caster with excellent Incantation Scaling and enough FP to regularly use more expensive Dragon Cult Incantations.

Why 80 Faith?

Faith is the primary damage attribute for this build.

Dragon Cult Incantations scale through the Incantation Scaling of your Sacred Seal, meaning increasing Faith directly improves their damage when using a Faith-scaling Seal.

80 Faith is therefore an excellent endgame target for a dedicated Lightning caster. Beyond this point, additional levels generally provide less value than improving supporting attributes such as Mind or Endurance.

Vigor and Mind

Despite being a caster, Lightning builds shouldn't neglect Vigor.

Several of the strongest Dragon Cult Incantations require you to fight surprisingly close to enemies. Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike, in particular, becomes extremely powerful when positioned close to large bosses where multiple lightning bolts can connect.

Reaching 60 Vigor therefore provides important survivability during endgame and Shadow of the Erdtree encounters.

Mind should gradually increase toward approximately 30. This provides enough FP to use Lightning Incantations as your primary damage source without requiring excessive Cerulean Flask usage.

Endurance

Endurance is less important than Faith, Vigor, and Mind, but spellcasting still consumes Stamina.

Around 20 Endurance provides enough Stamina and Equip Load for most Lightning setups while comfortably maintaining Medium Equip Load.

There is little reason to invest significantly more unless you're using heavier armor or additional equipment.

Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Arcane

These attributes should generally remain close to their starting values.

Strength and Dexterity only need additional investment if you want to use a specific secondary weapon, while Intelligence and Arcane provide little value to a dedicated Dragon Cult setup.

Avoid sacrificing Faith simply to meet unnecessary weapon requirements. Dragon Cult Incantations are the primary damage source of this build, with melee weapons serving as secondary tools.

Best Lightning Incantations

Dragon Cult Incantations provide some of the most versatile offensive Faith spells in Elden Ring. Rather than relying on a single Lightning attack, the build can switch between fast ranged projectiles, powerful charged attacks, AoE spells, and devastating close-range boss killers.

The Gravel Stone Seal should remain equipped whenever possible, as its passive bonus directly increases the damage of Dragon Cult Incantations.

Lightning Spear — Best Early-Game Incantation

Lightning Spear — Best Early-Game Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 17

Lightning Spear is one of the first major Dragon Cult Incantations available and remains useful throughout the entire game.

It launches a fast Lightning projectile with good range and relatively low FP cost, making it an excellent general-purpose spell against both regular enemies and bosses.

Lightning Spear can also be charged for additional damage, giving it excellent synergy with the Godfrey Icon. Use uncharged casts during shorter openings and charged casts when the enemy gives you enough time.

Once Knight's Lightning Spear becomes available, it becomes the stronger high-damage ranged option, but regular Lightning Spear remains valuable because of its lower FP cost and faster, simpler cast.

Location: Purchased after giving the Dragon Cult Prayerbook to Brother Corhyn or Miriel, Pastor of Vows. The Prayerbook is dropped by a Leyndell Knight near the Artist's Shack in Liurnia of the Lakes.

Knight's Lightning Spear — Best Ranged Damage Incantation

Knight's Lightning Spear — Best Ranged Damage Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 36

Knight's Lightning Spear is one of the strongest additions from Shadow of the Erdtree and should become a core spell once you obtain it.

The initial Lightning Spear is accompanied by several additional projectiles, allowing the Incantation to deal substantially more damage than a normal Lightning Spear when the entire attack connects.

Charging the spell increases the number of additional spears, making charged casts particularly dangerous during large boss openings.

It also provides excellent stance pressure, especially when all of the projectiles hit the same target.

Against most single-target bosses, Knight's Lightning Spear should become one of your primary ranged damage options.

Location: Found inside the Scorpion River Catacombs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike — Best Boss-Killing Incantation

Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike — Best Boss-Killing Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 26

Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike summons multiple pillars of red Lightning around the caster.

Its effectiveness depends heavily on the size of the target. Against smaller enemies, only one or a few bolts may connect. Against enormous bosses, however, multiple lightning strikes can hit the same enemy from a single cast, resulting in exceptional damage.

The Incantation can also be charged, increasing its effectiveness and giving it strong synergy with the Godfrey Icon.

Positioning is extremely important. Against large bosses, casting from close range or underneath the target gives more of the lightning strikes an opportunity to connect.

This makes Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike one of the strongest tools in the entire build against Dragons and other massive enemies.

Location: Purchased after giving the Ancient Dragon Prayerbook to Brother Corhyn or Miriel. The Prayerbook is found in Crumbling Farum Azula.

Lightning Strike — Best Ground AoE Option

Lightning Strike — Best Ground AoE Option

Requirements: Faith - 28

Lightning Strike calls down several bolts of Lightning in front of the caster.

Unlike Lightning Spear, it isn't designed around hitting a distant single target. Instead, its multiple strikes make it useful against groups and larger enemies, particularly when several bolts can connect.

It also becomes more effective around water, where Lightning attacks can take advantage of the environment.

The spell is less universally useful than Lightning Spear, but provides a valuable AoE option when fighting multiple enemies.

Location: Obtained from a Teardrop Scarab in the Weeping Peninsula, near the Minor Erdtree.

Lansseax's Glaive — Best Sweeping AoE Incantation

Lansseax's Glaive — Best Sweeping AoE Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 40

Lansseax's Glaive creates a large red Lightning glaive before sweeping it across a wide area.

Its enormous horizontal coverage makes it particularly useful against groups of enemies and targets that are difficult to hit with more concentrated Lightning attacks.

The spell requires a larger commitment than Lightning Spear, so avoid using it during small openings against aggressive bosses.

Its value comes primarily from coverage rather than being your highest single-target damage option.

Location: Obtained after defeating Ancient Dragon Lansseax in Altus Plateau.

Fortissax's Lightning Spear — Best Close-Range Burst Option

Fortissax's Lightning Spear — Best Close-Range Burst Option

Requirements: Faith - 46

Fortissax's Lightning Spear summons two red Lightning Spears before driving them into the ground around the caster.

The spell deals strong close-range Lightning damage and provides another option for punishing enemies during larger openings.

However, it requires significantly more commitment than your ranged Lightning Spears and doesn't have the same enormous-target potential as Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike.

Use it when you want concentrated close-range burst damage, rather than treating it as something that needs to be included in every spell rotation.

Location: Obtained by exchanging the Remembrance of the Lichdragon with Finger Reader Enia after defeating Lichdragon Fortissax.

Choosing Your Incantations

Your most important spells are:

  • Lightning Spear → efficient general-purpose ranged attack
  • Knight's Lightning Spear → high-damage ranged attack
  • Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike → large bosses and major openings

These three provide the core of the build.

Your remaining Memory Slots can then be adjusted depending on the encounter:

  • Lightning Strike → ground-based AoE
  • Lansseax's Glaive → wide crowd clearing
  • Fortissax's Lightning Spear → close-range burst

You don't need all six equipped at once. The strength of a Dragon Cult build comes from being able to choose the Lightning Incantation that best matches the target, rather than trying to use every spell during every encounter.

Best Weapons to Build Around

Lightning is primarily an Incantation-focused Faith build, so your melee weapon should remain a secondary option. Prioritize weapons that work well with high Faith or require minimal additional investment rather than sacrificing large amounts of Faith for weapon requirements.

Flame Art Erdsteel Dagger — Best Pure Faith Option

Flame Art Erdsteel Dagger — Best Pure Faith Option

Requirements: Strength - 7 / Dexterity - 12 / Faith - 14

The Erdsteel Dagger is an excellent backup weapon for a pure Faith caster because of its low requirements and strong interaction with Faith-based affinities.

Using a Flame Art affinity allows it to take advantage of our high Faith investment, giving the build a reliable melee option without requiring additional offensive attributes.

Its fast attacks also make it useful when an enemy gets too close to comfortably cast Lightning Incantations.

Location: Received from Kenneth Haight after helping him retake Fort Haight.

Coded Sword — Best Pure Faith Weapon

Coded Sword — Best Pure Faith Weapon

Requirements: Faith - 20

The Coded Sword requires no Strength or Dexterity investment and scales entirely with Faith, making it extremely easy to incorporate into our standard progression.

It deals pure Holy damage rather than Lightning, which is actually useful for giving the build an alternative damage type when fighting enemies resistant to Lightning.

Its Unique Skill, Unblockable Blade, also ignores shields, providing additional utility against heavily guarded enemies.

Location: Found in the Fortified Manor in Leyndell, Royal Capital.

Death Knight's Longhaft Axe — Best DLC Lightning Hybrid

Death Knight's Longhaft Axe

Requirements: Strength - 14 / Dexterity - 12 / Faith - 16

The Death Knight's Longhaft Axe provides a much more thematic melee option for players who want to incorporate Lightning directly into their weapon setup.

Its Unique Skill, Blinkbolt: Long-hafted Axe, allows you to rapidly close distance before following with a powerful Lightning attack.

The weapon does require additional investment compared with our pure caster options, so treat it as a hybrid alternative rather than mandatory equipment.

Location: Obtained from the Death Knight in Scorpion River Catacombs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Bolt of Gransax — Best Dexterity Lightning Alternative

Bolt of Gransax

Requirements: Strength - 20 / Dexterity - 40

The Bolt of Gransax is one of Elden Ring's most iconic Lightning weapons, with its Ancient Lightning Spear Skill providing extremely powerful long-range Lightning damage.

However, it doesn't naturally fit our 80 Faith progression. Its high 40 Dexterity requirement demands a significant change to the build's attribute distribution, while Faith doesn't improve the weapon's Skill damage.

For that reason, Bolt of Gransax should be treated as an alternative for a DEX/Lightning hybrid rather than a core weapon for our Faith caster.

Location: Found on the giant spear in Leyndell, Royal Capital. It must be obtained before progressing Leyndell into its later-game state.

Choosing Your Weapon

For the standard Faith caster:

  • Erdsteel Dagger or Coded Sword

For a Lightning-themed melee hybrid:

  • Death Knight's Longhaft Axe

For a dedicated DEX/Lightning alternative:

  • Bolt of Gransax

Your weapon should remain secondary. Dragon Cult Incantations are the primary damage source, so don't sacrifice the 80 Faith progression simply to force a Lightning-themed weapon into the build.

Best Armor for Lightning Builds

Lightning builds don't require a specific armor set to function, so armor should primarily provide good defenses while maintaining Medium Equip Load. Since several powerful Dragon Cult Incantations require relatively long casting animations, having reasonable Damage Negation can make close-range casting much safer.

There are, however, a few pieces that provide useful bonuses for the build.

Death Knight Helm — Best Lightning Headpiece

Death Knight Helm

The Death Knight Helm is the standout armor piece for a dedicated Lightning build.

It increases the damage of Dragon Cult Incantations and certain Dragon Cult weapon Skills by 2%, directly benefiting the core spells used by this build.

The individual bonus isn't enormous, but there is very little reason not to use it when maximizing Lightning damage, especially because the remaining armor slots can still be dedicated to defense.

Location: Found inside the Darklight Catacombs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Death Knight Set — Best Thematic DLC Set

Death Knight Set

The complete Death Knight Set is the most natural armor set for a Lightning-focused character.

Each piece provides the same type of Dragon Cult damage bonus, with the bonuses stacking when multiple pieces are equipped. This allows the complete set to increase the damage of our Dragon Cult Incantations while maintaining the Lightning theme of the build.

The set isn't mandatory, however. If its defensive values or weight don't suit your setup, using only some pieces is perfectly viable.

Location: Found inside the Darklight Catacombs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Rakshasa Set — Best General Offensive Alternative

Rakshasa Set

The Rakshasa Set provides a more general damage-focused alternative.

Its pieces increase damage dealt rather than specifically improving Dragon Cult Incantations, making them useful if your setup regularly combines Lightning spells with melee attacks.

The downside is reduced effective defense compared with similarly weighted armor, so this option is better suited to players comfortable sacrificing survivability for additional damage.

Location: Dropped by Rakshasa in the Eastern Nameless Mausoleum in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Mixed Medium Armor — Best Defensive Option

For general progression, simply use your best available defensive armor while maintaining Medium Equip Load.

This is especially useful before reaching Shadow of the Erdtree, since the Death Knight Set isn't available during the base-game portion of your first playthrough.

Prioritize Damage Negation and enough Poise to avoid being interrupted by weaker attacks, but don't sacrifice your normal dodge roll purely to wear heavier equipment.

Choosing Your Armor

For maximum Dragon Cult synergy:

  • Death Knight Set

For a balanced setup:

  • Death Knight Helm + defensive medium armor

For general progression:

  • Best available armor while maintaining Medium Equip Load

For a more aggressive hybrid setup:

  • Death Knight Helm or Rakshasa pieces

The Death Knight Helm is the most important individual armor piece once Shadow of the Erdtree becomes available. Before then, Lightning builds have no essential armor requirement, so survivability and Medium Equip Load should remain the priority.

Best Talismans for Lightning Builds

Lightning builds benefit most from Talismans that increase Incantation damage, Lightning damage, and charged spell damage. Since several of our strongest Dragon Cult Incantations can be charged, these bonuses can stack together for extremely powerful casts.

Flock's Canvas Talisman — Best Overall Incantation Talisman

Flock's Canvas Talisman

The Flock's Canvas Talisman increases the potency of Incantations by 8%, making it one of the most reliable damage increases available to the build.

The bonus applies without requiring any special condition, directly improving our Dragon Cult Incantations throughout every encounter.

For a dedicated Lightning caster, this should almost always occupy one of your Talisman slots.

Location: Obtained from Gowry after progressing Millicent's questline.

Lightning Scorpion Charm — Best Lightning Damage Talisman

Lightning Scorpion Charm

The Lightning Scorpion Charm increases Lightning damage by 12% in PvE, directly improving the elemental damage dealt by our Lightning Incantations.

This makes it one of the strongest offensive Talismans for the build, particularly because almost every major attack in our standard setup deals Lightning damage.

The downside is reduced Physical Damage Negation, making you noticeably more vulnerable to enemy attacks. Against particularly aggressive bosses, replacing it with a defensive option can be worthwhile.

Location: Found in Wyndham Catacombs in Altus Plateau.

Godfrey Icon — Best Charged Incantation Talisman

Godfrey Icon

The Godfrey Icon increases the damage of charged spells and Skills by 15%.

Several important Dragon Cult Incantations can take advantage of this bonus, making it particularly strong when your playstyle regularly uses charged casts.

Lightning Spear and Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike both benefit when charged, allowing Godfrey Icon to provide a substantial increase during larger boss openings.

However, don't force charged casts simply because the Talisman is equipped. Against fast enemies, an uncharged Incantation that safely connects is more valuable than being interrupted while attempting to maximize damage.

Location: Dropped by Godefroy the Grafted in the Golden Lineage Evergaol.

Faithful's Canvas Talisman — Best Additional Incantation Damage

Faithful's Canvas Talisman

The Faithful's Canvas Talisman increases Incantation damage by 4%.

While weaker than Flock's Canvas Talisman, the two effects can stack, making this a straightforward fourth offensive slot for a dedicated caster.

It doesn't require charging, maintaining full HP, or activating another effect, so the bonus remains useful regardless of which Dragon Cult Incantation you're casting.

Location: Found in Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid.

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman — Best Defensive Option

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman

The Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman significantly increases Physical Damage Negation in PvE.

This is particularly useful when using close-range Incantations such as Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike, where positioning near a boss can expose you to considerably more danger than simply throwing Lightning Spears from range.

It also provides an excellent replacement for Lightning Scorpion Charm when that Talisman's defensive penalty becomes too dangerous.

Location: Found in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.

Radagon Icon — Best Casting Speed Option

Radagon Icon

The Radagon Icon provides 30 virtual Dexterity toward spellcasting speed, reducing the casting time of your Incantations.

Faster casting can make Dragon Cult spells easier to use against aggressive enemies where openings are limited.

It doesn't directly increase your damage, so it competes with considerably stronger offensive options. Treat it as a comfort and consistency choice rather than a mandatory part of the build.

Location: Found inside Raya Lucaria Academy, accessible from the Debate Parlor Site of Grace.

Choosing Your Talismans

For maximum Lightning Incantation damage:

  • Flock's Canvas Talisman + Lightning Scorpion Charm + Godfrey Icon + Faithful's Canvas Talisman

For a more balanced setup:

  • Flock's Canvas Talisman + Lightning Scorpion Charm + Godfrey Icon + Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman

Against aggressive enemies where charged Incantations are difficult to use consistently, Godfrey Icon becomes less valuable and can be replaced with Radagon Icon or another defensive option.

Similarly, Lightning Scorpion Charm provides excellent damage but isn't mandatory. If its defensive penalty causes you to take significantly more damage, replacing it with Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman creates a much safer setup.

Your core offensive combination is generally Flock's Canvas Talisman + Lightning Scorpion Charm, while the remaining slots can be adjusted around charged spells, survivability, and casting speed.

Lightning Build Playstyle Tips

Lightning builds are strongest when you adapt your Incantation to the available opening and the type of enemy you're fighting. Fast Lightning Spears provide reliable ranged pressure, while the more powerful Dragon Cult Incantations reward careful positioning and larger openings.

Use Uncharged Spells During Short Openings

Several Lightning Incantations can be charged for additional damage, but charging isn't always the correct choice.

Against aggressive enemies, use an uncharged Lightning Spear or Knight's Lightning Spear to safely punish shorter openings.

Save charged casts for situations where you know the enemy cannot immediately retaliate.

A simple approach is:

  • Short opening → Uncharged cast
  • Large opening → Charged cast

The additional damage from Godfrey Icon is valuable, but only when you actually have enough time to safely complete the charge.

Use Knight's Lightning Spear as Your Main Boss Projectile

Once you reach Shadow of the Erdtree, Knight's Lightning Spear becomes one of your strongest general-purpose ranged options.

Its initial projectile is followed by additional Lightning Spears, allowing it to deal excellent single-target damage while applying strong stance pressure.

Use it against bosses where maintaining some distance is safer than committing to Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike.

Regular Lightning Spear still has value due to its lower FP cost, making it more efficient against weaker enemies or when conserving resources.

Get Close for Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike

Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike becomes dramatically stronger against large enemies when multiple bolts connect with the same target.

Against Dragons and other enormous bosses, position yourself close to or underneath the enemy before casting.

The larger their body, the greater the chance that several Lightning strikes will connect from a single cast.

This can produce enormous burst damage, but don't force the spell during unsafe openings. Being underneath a boss also puts you directly in range of many of its strongest attacks.

Charge Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike During Major Openings

When a large boss gives you enough time, charging Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike can significantly increase its potential.

Good opportunities include:

  • Stance breaks
  • Long recovery animations
  • Certain phase transitions
  • Large stationary attacks that don't threaten your position

With the Godfrey Icon equipped, these charged casts become some of the strongest attacks available to the build.

Take Advantage of Water and Rain

Lightning damage becomes particularly effective when enemies are standing in water or affected by rain.

Whenever an encounter takes place around shallow water, take advantage of the environment rather than ignoring it.

Some Lightning attacks can also create additional electrical effects when striking watery surfaces, making positioning around water even more valuable.

Keep the Gravel Stone Seal Active

The Gravel Stone Seal increases the damage of Dragon Cult Incantations, making it one of the most important pieces of equipment for this build.

Make sure the Seal is actually equipped in an active hand when casting your Dragon Cult spells so you benefit from its passive bonus.

At very high Faith, another Sacred Seal may provide higher raw Incantation Scaling. Advanced setups can take advantage of this by holding the Gravel Stone Seal for its passive bonus while casting with a stronger Seal in the opposite hand.

This isn't necessary for normal progression, but it provides another optimization option for endgame builds.

Don't Use Expensive Spells on Everything

Knight's Lightning Spear and the larger Ancient Dragon Incantations can consume FP quickly.

Against weaker enemies, regular Lightning Spear or your melee weapon is usually enough.

Save your expensive Incantations for enemies where their additional damage or coverage actually provides value.

This allows you to reserve more Flask charges for healing during longer areas and boss encounters.

Match the Spell to the Target

Not every Lightning Incantation performs equally against every enemy.

  • Small single target → Lightning Spear
  • Dangerous boss at range → Knight's Lightning Spear
  • Large boss → Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike
  • Groups → Lightning Strike or Lansseax's Glaive
  • Large close-range opening → Fortissax's Lightning Spear or Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike

Choosing the appropriate spell is more effective than repeatedly casting whichever Incantation has the highest theoretical damage.

Don't Force Close-Range Lightning Spells

Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike and other close-range Dragon Cult Incantations can deal enormous damage, but they also require much more commitment than Lightning Spear.

Against fast enemies, repeatedly trying to cast them can result in being interrupted before the attack even lands.

If an enemy doesn't provide enough time, stay at range and use your faster Incantations instead.

The build's versatility is one of its greatest strengths, so there's no reason to force a spell into an encounter where it performs poorly.

Use Your Melee Weapon to Conserve FP

Your secondary weapon isn't the focus of the build, but it remains useful during normal exploration.

Weak enemies generally don't justify spending FP on powerful Incantations.

A Faith-scaling weapon allows you to deal respectable melee damage while preserving your Cerulean Flasks for stronger enemies.

Adjust Against Lightning-Resistant Enemies

Some enemies have significantly higher Lightning resistance than others.

Because our character has extremely high Faith, you aren't locked into dealing Lightning damage exclusively. Keep one or two alternative Faith-based damage options available for particularly poor Lightning matchups.

You don't need to transform the build into a general Faith caster. These spells simply provide backup when Lightning is heavily resisted.

Maintain Medium Equip Load

Dragon Cult Incantations can have lengthy casting animations, making positioning and dodging extremely important.

Maintain Medium Equip Load or lighter so you can quickly reposition after casting.

Additional armor can help you survive mistakes, but attempting to tank through boss attacks while casting long Incantations is rarely worth the trade.

Don't Waste Your Godfrey Icon Bonus

Godfrey Icon improves charged Incantations, but it doesn't mean every attack should be charged.

If you repeatedly get interrupted while charging, you're gaining no value from the Talisman at all.

Use the bonus when the opening naturally allows it and switch to faster casts whenever necessary.

Build Your Combat Around Different Openings

A simple Lightning combat flow is:

  • Weak enemy → melee weapon or Lightning Spear
  • Short opening → uncharged Lightning Spear
  • Medium ranged opening → Knight's Lightning Spear
  • Large ranged opening → charged Knight's Lightning Spear
  • Large boss + close opening → Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike
  • Multiple enemies → Lightning Strike or Lansseax's Glaive
  • Enemy highly resistant to Lightning → alternative Faith damage

Lightning builds reward versatility. Use fast Lightning Spears for consistent ranged pressure, charge your Incantations when the opening allows it, and move close to large enemies when Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike has an opportunity to hit multiple times.
