Elden Ring Black Flame Build - Stats, Weapons, Skills & More

Updated on Aug 24, 2026
Aug 24, 2026

Overview

Black Flame builds specialize in Godslayer Incantations, combining powerful Fire damage with a unique damage-over-time effect that burns away a percentage of an enemy's maximum HP.

Unlike conventional Fire builds, Black Flame is particularly effective during longer encounters against enemies with large health pools. Offensive Black Flame effects continue burning the target after the initial hit, dealing additional damage based partly on their maximum HP.

This makes the build naturally suited to boss fights, where repeatedly applying Black Flame allows the damage-over-time effect to contribute throughout the encounter.

Our primary offensive attribute is Faith, which increases the damage of our Incantations and gives us access to the entire Godslayer spell selection. The Godslayer's Seal is the natural catalyst for the build, increasing the damage of offensive Godslayer Incantations while also providing strong Faith scaling.

The standard Black Flame Incantation will be our primary ranged attack. It can be charged for additional direct damage, while spells such as Scouring Black Flame provide wider coverage and Black Flame Ritual creates an area of Black Flame around the caster.

Black Flame can also be incorporated into melee combat. Black Flame Blade temporarily enchants compatible weapons, while Black Flame Tornado provides one of the strongest Black Flame weapon Skills against large enemies when you have enough time to complete the attack.

This gives the build a flexible playstyle where you can pressure enemies from range with Incantations before using melee weapons and Black Flame Skills whenever an enemy closes the distance.

How Black Flame Works

Offensive Godslayer Incantations apply the Blackflame effect after dealing their initial damage.

Against normal PvE targets, the effect deals:

2% of the target's maximum HP + 20 damage over 2 seconds.

Because part of this damage is based on maximum HP, Black Flame becomes increasingly valuable against enemies with enormous health pools.

However, applying another Black Flame effect before the previous one expires doesn't create a second independent burn. Instead, the duration is refreshed.

This means you don't necessarily want to throw Black Flame as rapidly as possible. Allowing the burn to deal its damage between casts can improve your FP efficiency during longer encounters.

Black Flame in Shadow of the Erdtree

Black Flame remains useful in the DLC, but its percentage-based effect was specifically reduced against DLC bosses.

Most Shadow of the Erdtree bosses take approximately:

1% maximum HP + 10

instead of the normal 2% + 20.

Messmer the Impaler, Bayle the Dread, and Promised Consort have even greater resistance, reducing it to approximately:

0.7% maximum HP + 7.

This doesn't make Black Flame useless. Your Incantations still deal their regular Fire damage, and the burn remains additional free damage.

It simply means that against DLC bosses, you should rely more on your Faith scaling and direct Incantation damage rather than expecting the percentage burn to carry the encounter.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Strong Faith-based Fire damage.
  • Black Flame applies additional percentage-based damage over time.
  • Particularly effective against high-HP enemies and bosses.
  • Excellent ranged option through Black Flame.
  • Access to both single-target and AoE Godslayer Incantations.
  • Godslayer's Seal directly improves offensive Black Flame Incantations.
  • Can combine Incantations with melee weapons and Black Flame Skills.
  • Black Flame Tornado can deal exceptional damage against large targets.
  • Requires very little investment outside Faith for a caster-focused setup.

Cons

  • Most Black Flame damage is Fire, making Fire-resistant enemies more difficult.
  • The Black Flame DoT does not stack; repeatedly applying it simply refreshes the effect.
  • Several stronger Godslayer Incantations have relatively high Faith requirements.
  • Black Flame Ritual and Black Flame Tornado require good positioning to use effectively.
  • Black Flame Blade has a very short duration, requiring a more active melee playstyle.
  • Heavy Incantation usage requires a reasonable investment into Mind.
  • Shadow of the Erdtree bosses have additional resistance to Black Flame's percentage-based damage.
  • The build is less effective if you simply spam spells without allowing the Black Flame burn to contribute between attacks.

Starting Class, Attribute Leveling and Distribution

Black Flame builds scale primarily through Faith, so the attribute distribution is relatively straightforward. Faith increases the direct damage of our Godslayer Incantations, while Vigor and Mind provide the survivability and FP needed to consistently cast them during longer encounters.

We don't need significant Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Arcane investment unless you specifically want to use a particular melee weapon alongside the build.

The Prophet is the best starting class for a dedicated Black Flame build because it begins with 16 Faith and relatively little investment into attributes we don't need.

Your first major target should be 27 Faith, allowing you to use the Godslayer's Seal. However, don't neglect Vigor while rushing toward it. Black Flame spells have enough range to fight safely, but several of our strongest Incantations require fighting much closer to enemies.

By around level 50, aim for approximately 25 Vigor, 21 Mind, and 35 Faith. This gives you enough FP to comfortably use Black Flame as your primary ranged attack while providing strong early Faith scaling.

At level 100, 40 Vigor and around 55 Faith provide a strong balance between survivability and Incantation damage.

At level 150, 60 Vigor, 30 Mind, and 80 Faith create a dedicated endgame Black Flame caster with excellent Incantation scaling and enough FP to maintain consistent pressure during boss fights.

Why 80 Faith?

Faith is by far our most important offensive attribute.

The direct Fire damage of Godslayer Incantations scales through the Incantation Scaling of your Sacred Seal, while the percentage-based Black Flame burn itself does not become stronger from additional Faith.

This means increasing Faith primarily improves the initial hit of your spells, while the Black Flame effect continues providing additional percentage-based damage afterward.

At higher levels, 80 Faith is an excellent stopping point for a dedicated Incantation build and allows us to maximize the direct damage portion of Black Flame attacks.

Vigor and Mind

Black Flame isn't purely a long-range build.

Scouring Black Flame, Black Flame Ritual, and Black Flame Tornado all encourage fighting at closer ranges, making 60 Vigor extremely valuable in the endgame.

Mind should generally reach around 25–30.

You want enough FP to cast repeatedly during longer boss fights without sacrificing too many Flask charges or character levels. Going substantially higher is usually unnecessary unless you're also incorporating many expensive Incantations outside the Black Flame toolkit.

Endurance

Black Flame Incantations consume Stamina in addition to FP, and several have relatively lengthy casting animations.

Around 15–20 Endurance is sufficient for most setups while also giving you enough Equip Load to wear reasonable armor and carry a melee weapon alongside your Sacred Seal.

There is little reason to heavily invest in Endurance on a caster-focused version of the build.

Strength and Dexterity

Keep Strength and Dexterity close to their starting values unless your chosen melee weapon requires additional investment.

Your melee weapon is primarily a secondary tool, so avoid sacrificing large amounts of Faith simply to increase its Physical Attack Rating.

If you decide to build around something like the Godslayer's Greatsword instead, you would need a more hybrid attribute distribution. That becomes a different variation of the build rather than our primary Black Flame caster setup.

Attribute Priority

Your general progression should be:

  • 27 Faith for Godslayer's Seal → Vigor → Faith → Mind → Endurance

Continue gradually raising Vigor alongside Faith rather than rushing directly toward maximum spell damage.

A strong level 150 target is approximately:

  • 60 Vigor / 30 Mind / 18 Endurance / 80 Faith

Any additional levels beyond this point can go into Mind, Endurance, or weapon requirements depending on your preferred equipment.

Best Black Flame Incantations

Black Flame builds have a relatively small selection of dedicated Godslayer Incantations, but each one fills a distinct role. You don't need to equip every Black Flame spell available; focus on the options that provide reliable single-target damage, AoE pressure, and defensive utility.

Black Flame — Best Overall Incantation

Black Flame — Best Overall Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 20

Black Flame should be your primary offensive Incantation.

It throws a ball of Black Flame that deals Fire damage before applying the Black Flame damage-over-time effect. The spell can also be charged, increasing its direct damage and causing an additional explosion on impact.

Its combination of good range, reasonable FP cost, and percentage-based burn makes it extremely effective against bosses with large health pools.

You don't need to spam it as quickly as possible. Allowing the burn to deal its damage before refreshing it can improve your FP efficiency during longer fights.

Location: Obtained from the Godskin Prayerbook found in Stormveil Castle.

Scouring Black Flame — Best AoE Incantation

Scouring Black Flame — Best AoE Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 28

Scouring Black Flame sweeps Black Flame across a wide area in front of you.

Its wider coverage makes it much better than regular Black Flame when dealing with groups of enemies or large targets, and the spell can also be charged for additional effectiveness.

The relatively short range means positioning matters more than with Black Flame, so use it when enemies are grouped together or when a large boss gives you a safe opening.

Location: Obtained from the Godskin Apostle in Dominula, Windmill Village.

Black Flame Ritual — Best Close-Range Defensive Offense

Black Flame Ritual — Best Close-Range Defensive

Requirements: Faith - 42

Black Flame Ritual summons pillars of Black Flame in a circle around the caster.

Rather than functioning as a conventional ranged spell, it creates a dangerous area around you that can repeatedly punish enemies attempting to fight at close range.

This makes it particularly useful against aggressive bosses, where you can cast the Ritual during a larger opening and force the enemy to move through the flames while continuing the fight.

It can also be charged to create a larger circle.

Location: Obtained after defeating the Godskin Apostle and Godskin Noble in Spiritcaller Cave.

Black Flame's Protection — Best Defensive Incantation

Black Flame's Protection — Best Defensive Incantation

Requirements: Faith - 30

Black Flame's Protection substantially increases your Physical Damage Negation, giving the build an excellent defensive option against enemies that primarily deal Physical damage.

The downside is reduced healing from your Flask of Crimson Tears while the buff is active.

Despite that trade-off, the additional protection is extremely valuable during difficult melee-heavy boss encounters, particularly because some Black Flame attacks require you to fight relatively close to the enemy.

Location: Obtained from Gideon Ofnir after reaching Miquella's Haligtree, or later purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks under the appropriate circumstances.

Noble Presence — Best Situational Close-Range Option

Noble Presence — Best Situational Close-Range Option

Requirements: Faith - 26

Noble Presence creates a shockwave around the caster that deals damage and can knock back smaller enemies.

It isn't something you'll use constantly during boss fights, but it provides useful close-range crowd control when enemies surround you.

The spell can also be charged, increasing its effectiveness.

Treat Noble Presence as a utility option rather than a core damage spell. Regular Black Flame, Scouring Black Flame, and Black Flame Ritual should remain your primary offensive Incantations.

Location: Obtained from the Godskin Prayerbook after defeating the Godskin Noble in Volcano Manor.

Choosing Your Incantations

For most encounters, your core setup is:

  • Black Flame → primary ranged attack
  • Scouring Black Flame → groups and large targets
  • Black Flame Ritual → close-range pressure
  • Black Flame's Protection → Physical defense

Noble Presence can occupy the final slot when its crowd-control utility is useful, but it isn't mandatory.

The goal isn't to cast a different Incantation every few seconds. Black Flame itself should handle most situations, while the remaining spells give you specialized tools when normal Black Flame isn't the best answer.

Best Weapons to Build Around

Black Flame is primarily an Incantation-focused Faith build, so your melee weapon should complement the spells rather than become the main source of damage. Faith-friendly weapons are ideal, especially those that provide Black Flame effects or require minimal additional attribute investment.

Godslayer's Greatsword — Best Black Flame Hybrid Weapon

Godslayer's Greatsword — Best Black Flame Hybrid Weapon

Requirements: Strength - 20 / Dexterity - 22 / Faith - 20

The Godslayer's Greatsword is the most thematic melee weapon available to a Black Flame build.

Its Unique Skill, The Queen's Black Flame, coats the weapon in Black Flame before delivering a powerful sweeping attack. A second input follows with another slash, allowing the Skill to deal enormous damage when you have enough time to complete the sequence.

The main downside is its attribute requirements. Our primary build doesn't naturally invest heavily into Strength or Dexterity, so using the Godslayer's Greatsword requires changing the leveling distribution toward a more hybrid setup.

For players willing to make that investment, however, it provides the most complete Black Flame melee/caster fantasy.

Location: Found in the Divine Tower of Caelid after defeating the Godskin Apostle.

Flame Art Erdsteel Dagger — Best Pure Faith Melee Option

Flame Art Erdsteel Dagger — Best Pure Faith Melee Option

Requirements: Strength - 7 / Dexterity - 12 / Faith - 14

The Erdsteel Dagger is an excellent secondary weapon for a Faith-heavy Black Flame caster.

Its naturally low requirements make it easy to incorporate without sacrificing our 80 Faith progression, while a Flame Art affinity allows the weapon to benefit heavily from Faith.

The Erdsteel Dagger is particularly effective with Faith-based affinities because Faith contributes unusually well to its damage, making it much better suited to this build than its small size might suggest.

Its fast attacks also make it a convenient backup weapon when enemies get too close for comfortable Incantation casting.

Location: Received from Kenneth Haight after helping him retake Fort Haight.

Flame Art Twinblade — Best Black Flame Tornado Option

Flame Art Twinblade — Best Black Flame Tornado Option

Requirements: Strength - 10 / Dexterity - 18

A regular Twinblade provides an excellent platform for Black Flame Tornado without forcing the build into a dedicated melee stat spread.

Black Flame Tornado can be applied to Twinblades and polearms, and its Flame Art affinity fits naturally with our high Faith investment.

The Skill is particularly dangerous against large, high-HP enemies when you have enough time to perform the full animation. Its Black Flame effect also gives the weapon a direct connection to the core theme of the build.

Use it as a powerful close-range punish rather than trying to replace your regular Black Flame Incantations with it.

Flame Art Guardian's Swordspear — Best Reach Option

Flame Art Guardian's Swordspear — Best Reach Option

Requirements: Strength - 17 / Dexterity - 16

The Guardian's Swordspear provides much greater reach than a dagger or Twinblade while remaining considerably faster than a Colossal Sword.

With a Flame Art affinity, it can take advantage of our Faith investment and provide reliable melee damage without requiring us to completely redesign the build around Strength.

Its reach makes it particularly useful when an enemy closes the distance, but you still want to maintain some separation rather than fighting directly in their face.

For a caster-first Black Flame setup, treat it as a flexible melee backup rather than something you need to constantly attack with.

Flame Art Cross-Naginata — Best Versatile Polearm Option

Flame Art Cross-Naginata — Best Versatile Polearm Option

Requirements: Strength - 16 / Dexterity - 20

The Cross-Naginata combines excellent reach with innate Blood Loss buildup, giving the build another source of pressure without requiring Arcane investment.

Using a Flame Art affinity shifts the weapon toward our high Faith stat, allowing it to function as a secondary melee option while Black Flame Incantations remain the main focus.

Its thrusting attacks are also useful for maintaining safer spacing against aggressive enemies.

The Dexterity requirement is higher than our standard progression, however, so don't invest in it unless you specifically want this weapon.

Location: Found inside Gael Tunnel in Caelid.

Choosing Your Weapon

For the full Black Flame melee/caster theme:

  • Godslayer's Greatsword

For minimal stat investment:

  • Flame Art Erdsteel Dagger

For Black Flame Tornado:

  • Flame Art Twinblade

For additional melee reach:

  • Flame Art Guardian's Swordspear

For a versatile polearm setup:

  • Flame Art Cross-Naginata

Your weapon should remain secondary to your Godslayer Incantations on the standard build. Don't sacrifice large amounts of Faith simply to meet weapon requirements unless you intentionally want to create a more melee-focused Black Flame hybrid.

Don't Forget the Godslayer's Seal

Godslayer's Seal

Although it isn't a conventional weapon, the Godslayer's Seal should remain your primary casting tool. It requires 27 Faith and increases the damage of offensive Godslayer Incantations by 10%.

At our eventual 80 Faith, the Erdtree Seal has higher raw Incantation Scaling, reaching 353 compared with 329 on the Godslayer's Seal. However, the Godslayer's Seal's 10% Black Flame bonus means it remains extremely competitive when specifically casting the Incantations this build is designed around.

Best Armor for Flame Builds

Black Flame builds don't require a specific armor set to function. Since most of our damage comes from Faith and Godslayer Incantations, armor should primarily provide a good balance between protection, weight, and mobility.

Several pieces do provide useful bonuses, but maintaining Medium Equip Load should remain the priority.

Fire Knight Helm — Best Offensive Headpiece

Fire Knight Helm

The Fire Knight Helm is one of the strongest offensive armor pieces for a Faith-focused Black Flame build.

It provides a small increase to maximum HP, Stamina, and Equip Load, while also increasing Strength and Dexterity. The latter stats aren't central to our caster setup, but they can help meet the requirements of a secondary melee weapon without additional levels.

This makes the helm especially useful for hybrid variants using weapons such as the Godslayer's Greatsword.

Location: Dropped by Fire Knights in Shadow Keep in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Death Mask Helm — Best Faith Headpiece

Death Mask Helm — Best Faith Headpiece

The Death Mask Helm increases Faith by 2, making it a straightforward option for increasing our primary offensive attribute.

The bonus becomes less important once you reach the 80 Faith target, but during progression it can help reach Incantation requirements earlier or free a couple of levels for Vigor and Mind.

Its relatively low weight also makes it easy to incorporate into almost any setup.

Location: Found in Darklight Catacombs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Rakshasa Set — Best Melee-Hybrid Offensive Option

Rakshasa Set

The Rakshasa Set increases damage dealt with each equipped piece.

This is more useful for a Black Flame build that regularly incorporates melee attacks and Black Flame Tornado, rather than one that primarily throws Black Flame Incantations from range.

The increased damage comes at the cost of lower effective defenses, so there's little reason to force the complete set onto a caster-focused setup.

Location: Dropped by Rakshasa in the Eastern Nameless Mausoleum in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Godskin Apostle / Noble Sets — Best Thematic Options

Godskin ApostleGodskin Apostle

The Godskin Apostle and Godskin Noble Sets don't provide a direct increase to Black Flame damage, but they perfectly match the Godslayer theme of the build.

Use them if you want the full Black Flame aesthetic without needing to optimize every armor slot around a passive bonus.

The Godskin Apostle Set is also relatively light, making it easy to maintain Medium Equip Load while carrying a Sacred Seal and secondary weapon.

Location: The Godskin Apostle Set is obtained from the Godskin Apostle in the Divine Tower of Caelid, while the Godskin Noble Set is obtained from the Godskin Noble at the Divine Tower of Liurnia.

Mixed Medium Armor — Best General Setup

For most Black Flame builds, mixed armor is the best overall option.

Choose pieces with good Damage Negation while staying at Medium Equip Load. Since there is no armor bonus that fundamentally transforms Godslayer Incantations, survivability is generally more valuable than forcing a complete set.

This is particularly important when using Scouring Black Flame, Black Flame Ritual, or Black Flame Tornado, since all three can require fighting much closer to enemies than regular Black Flame.

Choosing Your Armor

For general use:

  • Best available defensive armor while maintaining Medium Equip Load

For additional Faith during progression:

  • Death Mask Helm + mixed armor

For a melee-heavy Black Flame hybrid:

  • Rakshasa pieces

For the Black Flame aesthetic:

  • Godskin Apostle or Godskin Noble Set

Armor is ultimately one of the least restrictive parts of this build. Prioritize Medium Equip Load and sufficient defenses, then use passive armor bonuses when they naturally fit your setup rather than sacrificing survivability to obtain them.

Best Talismans for Black Flame Builds

Talismans are one of the best ways to increase the damage of a Black Flame build. Since our primary damage comes from Godslayer Incantations, we want to prioritize Incantation damage, Fire damage, and bonuses that work with the chargeable spells in our toolkit.

Flock's Canvas Talisman — Best Overall Incantation Talisman

Flock's Canvas Talisman

The Flock's Canvas Talisman increases the potency of Incantations by 8%, making it one of the most consistent damage increases available to the build.

Unlike more specialized Talismans, there is no activation condition or downside. Black Flame, Scouring Black Flame, and our other offensive Incantations all benefit automatically.

This makes it an excellent permanent slot for a caster-focused Black Flame build.

Location: Obtained from Gowry after progressing Millicent's questline.

Fire Scorpion Charm — Best Fire Damage Talisman

Fire Scorpion Charm

The Fire Scorpion Charm increases Fire damage by 12% in PvE, directly improving the Fire damage dealt by our Black Flame Incantations.

It also benefits Fire-based melee options such as Black Flame Tornado, making it equally useful on caster and hybrid versions of the build.

The downside is reduced Physical Damage Negation, so the additional damage comes at a noticeable defensive cost. Against particularly aggressive bosses, replacing it with a defensive Talisman can be worthwhile.

Location: Found inside Fort Laiedd on Mt. Gelmir.

Godfrey Icon — Best Charged Incantation Talisman

Godfrey Icon

The Godfrey Icon increases the damage of charged spells and Skills by 15%.

Both Black Flame and Scouring Black Flame can be charged, making this an excellent choice when you regularly take advantage of their charged versions.

It provides no benefit when you release these Incantations immediately, so don't force a charged cast when an enemy only gives you a short opening.

Location: Obtained by defeating Godefroy the Grafted in the Golden Lineage Evergaol.

Faithful's Canvas Talisman — Best Additional Incantation Damage

Faithful's Canvas Talisman

The Faithful's Canvas Talisman increases the potency of Incantations by 4%.

The bonus is smaller than Flock's Canvas Talisman, but the two Talismans can be equipped together, allowing a dedicated caster to further increase Incantation damage.

Once all four Talisman slots are available, this becomes a straightforward offensive option if you don't need additional defense or utility.

Location: Found in Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid.

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman — Best Defensive Option

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman

The Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman significantly increases Physical Damage Negation in PvE.

Black Flame isn't always played from maximum range. Scouring Black Flame and Black Flame Ritual can bring you relatively close to enemies, while Black Flame Tornado requires an even larger close-range commitment.

Additional Physical defense can therefore be extremely valuable against aggressive bosses.

It also provides a good replacement for Fire Scorpion Charm when the latter's defensive penalty becomes too dangerous.

Location: Found in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.

Beloved Stardust — Best Casting Speed Option

Beloved Stardust — Best Casting Speed Option

The Beloved Stardust greatly increases virtual Dexterity for spellcasting, significantly improving Incantation casting speed.

Faster casts can make Black Flame considerably easier to use against aggressive DLC enemies where long openings are uncommon.

However, it also increases the damage you take, making it a high-risk option. The build already has access to strong offensive multipliers, so this should be treated as an optional choice rather than a mandatory Talisman.

Location: Obtained during Count Ymir's questline in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Choosing Your Talismans

For maximum Black Flame Incantation damage:

  • Flock's Canvas Talisman + Fire Scorpion Charm + Godfrey Icon + Faithful's Canvas Talisman

For a more balanced setup:

  • Flock's Canvas Talisman + Fire Scorpion Charm + Godfrey Icon + Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman

Against aggressive enemies where charged casts are difficult to use consistently, Godfrey Icon becomes less important and can be replaced with additional defense or casting speed.

If Fire Scorpion Charm's defensive penalty becomes problematic, replace it rather than forcing maximum damage into every encounter.

The most important thing is that your Talismans support how you're actually using Black Flame. Flock's Canvas provides reliable damage in every encounter, while Fire Scorpion Charm and Godfrey Icon become increasingly valuable when you can safely exploit their specific bonuses.

Black Flame Build Playstyle Tips

Black Flame builds are strongest when you take advantage of both the direct Fire damage and the percentage-based burn applied by Godslayer Incantations. Rather than casting continuously without thinking about timing, Black Flame rewards deliberate spell usage and choosing the right Incantation for each opening.

Don't Overwrite Black Flame Unnecessarily

Black Flame's damage-over-time effect doesn't stack with itself. Applying another Black Flame effect while the previous burn is still active refreshes the effect rather than creating a second independent burn.

Against high-HP bosses, allowing the burn to deal its damage before applying it again can make your FP usage considerably more efficient.

This doesn't mean you should deliberately stop attacking, but avoid mindlessly spamming Black Flame when another action would provide more value.

Charge Black Flame When You Have the Opening

Black Flame can be charged for increased direct damage, making charged casts particularly effective during large boss openings.

With the Godfrey Icon, charged casts receive an additional damage bonus.

Use charged Black Flame during:

  • Long recovery animations → Charged Black Flame
  • Stance breaks → Charged Black Flame
  • Phase transitions → Charged Black Flame

Against aggressive enemies with shorter openings, release the spell normally. Getting an uncharged cast safely is better than being interrupted while trying to maximize damage.

Use Scouring Black Flame Against Large Targets

Scouring Black Flame covers a much wider area than the standard projectile.

This makes it particularly useful against large bosses and groups of enemies, where more of the flame can reliably connect.

Against smaller single targets, regular Black Flame is usually more efficient and easier to land.

Use Black Flame Ritual Against Aggressive Enemies

Black Flame Ritual is particularly effective against enemies that constantly try to close the distance.

Rather than chasing them with ranged Incantations, create the Black Flame circle and allow aggressive enemies to move into it.

It can also provide breathing room while you reposition or prepare your next attack.

Don't cast it randomly, however. The animation requires a reasonable opening, and highly mobile enemies may simply move away from the affected area.

Save Black Flame Tornado for Large Openings

Black Flame Tornado can deal enormous damage, particularly against large enemies with high HP, but its full animation requires a substantial commitment.

Use it during:

  • Stance breaks
  • Long boss recovery animations
  • Certain phase transitions
  • Large enemies that remain stationary

Trying to complete the full Skill during a short opening will often result in getting interrupted.

You also don't need Black Flame Tornado to make the build work. Your Godslayer Incantations remain the primary damage source.

Use Black Flame's Protection Against Physical Bosses

Black Flame's Protection provides excellent Physical Damage Negation and can significantly improve survivability against melee-focused enemies.

The downside is reduced healing, so don't automatically use it against every encounter.

Against bosses dealing mostly elemental damage, another defensive buff may provide considerably more value.

Use Your Melee Weapon to Conserve FP

Not every enemy deserves an Incantation.

Against weaker enemies, use your secondary weapon rather than spending FP on repeated Black Flame casts. A Flame Art weapon can still take advantage of your high Faith investment and provides plenty of damage for normal exploration.

Save your FP and Cerulean Flasks for stronger enemies and bosses.

Don't Force Black Flame Blade Into the Build

Black Flame Blade can be useful on compatible weapons, but its extremely short duration makes it very different from conventional weapon buffs.

If you use it, apply it immediately before attacking rather than treating it as a long-duration pre-fight buff.

Our primary setup doesn't rely on Black Flame Blade, so there's no reason to constantly interrupt your normal casting rhythm simply to keep it active.

Keep the Godslayer's Seal Equipped

The Godslayer's Seal boosts offensive Godslayer Incantations, making it the natural casting tool for the build.

At very high Faith, other Sacred Seals can achieve higher raw Incantation Scaling, but the Godslayer's Seal's dedicated bonus keeps it highly competitive for the spells we're actually using.

For players interested in optimizing further, you can also take advantage of seal passive bonuses while casting with another seal, but this isn't necessary for the build to perform well.

Use Godfrey Icon Intelligently

The Godfrey Icon only benefits attacks that are actually charged.

Don't hold every Black Flame cast purely because you have the Talisman equipped. Against aggressive bosses, waiting for a full charge can turn a safe punish into an unnecessary trade.

Think of the bonus as something you exploit during large openings, not a requirement for every cast.

Adjust Against Fire-Resistant Enemies

Black Flame still deals primarily Fire damage on its initial attacks, so enemies with high Fire resistance can significantly reduce your direct damage.

The percentage-based burn can still provide value where applicable, but you shouldn't expect the build to perform equally against every target.

Your high Faith investment gives you access to other damage types, so carrying one or two alternative Incantations for highly Fire-resistant encounters can prevent the build from becoming unnecessarily restrictive.

They don't need to become part of your normal rotation; they're simply backup tools for bad matchups.

Remember That DLC Bosses Resist the Percentage Burn

Shadow of the Erdtree bosses have additional resistance to Black Flame's percentage-based HP damage.

This means you should rely more heavily on direct Incantation damage, Faith scaling, and good spell selection rather than expecting the Black Flame DoT to melt DLC bosses as effectively as many high-HP base-game enemies.

Black Flame remains useful; the percentage burn simply contributes less.

Maintain Medium Equip Load

Several Black Flame Incantations have animations that leave you committed to the cast, so reliable dodging remains extremely important.

Stay at Medium Equip Load or lighter and reposition before casting rather than trying to absorb attacks through your animation.

Black Flame's Protection can make you more durable, but it doesn't turn the build into a Tank.

Manage Your FP During Long Boss Fights

Percentage-based damage makes Black Flame particularly attractive during long encounters, but repeatedly casting without considering FP efficiency can quickly drain your resources.

Use regular Black Flame for most ranged openings, reserve more expensive Incantations for situations where their AoE or positioning advantages actually matter, and use melee attacks when spending FP isn't necessary.

Choose Your Spell Based on the Opening

A simple way to approach combat is:

  • Short opening → Uncharged Black Flame
  • Large opening → Charged Black Flame
  • Multiple or large targets → Scouring Black Flame
  • Enemy aggressively approaching → Black Flame Ritual
  • Major stationary opening → Black Flame Tornado
  • Physical-heavy encounter → Black Flame's Protection

You don't need complicated spell rotations. Each Godslayer Incantation has a specific situation where it performs best.

Black Flame rewards patience and efficient spell usage. Apply its percentage-based burn consistently, charge your Incantations when the opening allows it, and use Ritual, Scouring Black Flame, and Black Flame Tornado when their specialized strengths actually provide an advantage.
