Elden Ring Bow Build - Stats, Weapons, Skills & More

Updated on Aug 25, 2026
Aug 25, 2026

Overview

Bow builds offer one of the most unique ways to play Elden Ring, allowing you to fight almost entirely from range while using different bows, arrow types, status effects, and positioning to deal with each encounter.

Playing exclusively with bows is still more challenging than most conventional melee or caster builds. Bows generally have weaker attribute scaling, arrows must constantly be purchased or crafted, and aggressive bosses can make maintaining distance difficult.

However, bow builds have significantly more tools available than they may initially appear to. Light Bows and certain unique Longbows allow you to fire quickly after jumping, rolling, or sprinting, while standard Bows provide stronger individual shots and Greatbows offer powerful long-range burst damage and knockback.

Shadow of the Erdtree also expanded the playstyle with weapons such as Ansbach's Longbow and Igon's Greatbow, alongside additional Talismans that directly improve ranged combat. Ansbach's Longbow is particularly notable because it combines the properties of a Longbow with the mobile moveset normally associated with Light Bows.

The key to a successful Bow build is adaptability. Instead of relying on one bow and one arrow type for the entire game, carry several ammunition types and take advantage of enemy weaknesses whenever possible.

Understanding the Different Bow Types

Elden Ring divides its primary ranged weapons into three major bow categories, and each serves a different purpose.

Light Bows

Light Bows sacrifice some raw damage in exchange for speed and mobility.

Their biggest advantage is the ability to quickly fire after actions such as rolling, sprinting, jumping, and landing. This creates a much more aggressive playstyle where you constantly reposition while firing between enemy attacks.

For difficult bosses, this mobility can often be more valuable than the higher damage of a slower Bow.

Bows

Standard Bows generally offer higher damage and better range than Light Bows, but don't normally have the same mobile firing options.

They are excellent for exploration, long-range engagements, and situations where you have enough distance to safely draw your shots.

There are also important exceptions. The Black Bow and Ansbach's Longbow use the mobile Light Bow-style moveset despite belonging to the Bow category, making them particularly valuable for dedicated bow characters. Ansbach's Longbow also requires a massive 43 Dexterity, so it is very clearly aimed at dedicated DEX archers.

Greatbows

Greatbows trade speed for massive individual hits, long range, and strong knockback.

They are excellent for initiating fights from a distance, dealing with large enemies, or taking advantage of long openings. Their slow firing speed makes them much harder to use against aggressive bosses at close range.

Skills such as Rain of Arrows, Radahn's Rain, and Igon's Drake Hunt also give Greatbows powerful specialized damage options. Igon's Greatbow is particularly strong against Dragons and boosts the damage of Igon's Harpoons by 20% while held.

The best Bow builds therefore don't necessarily commit to only one category. A fast bow for mobile combat combined with a Greatbow for long-range burst damage gives you significantly more options.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent ranged damage and safety when you can maintain distance.
  • Access to many different damage types and status effects through arrows.
  • Light Bow-style movesets provide surprisingly high mobility.
  • Excellent at safely pulling individual enemies from groups.
  • Greatbows provide powerful burst damage and knockback.
  • Bow Skills such as Barrage and Rain of Arrows provide additional ways to apply damage and status effects.
  • Shadow of the Erdtree adds several powerful new weapons and ranged-focused Talismans.
  • Offers a completely different playstyle from conventional melee builds.

Cons

  • Bow-only is still more difficult than most standard builds, especially against aggressive bosses.
  • Most bows have relatively poor attribute scaling compared to melee weapons.
  • Constantly purchasing or crafting arrows can become expensive and tedious.
  • You need to carry several arrow types to get the most out of the build.
  • Fast enemies can make maintaining distance difficult.
  • Some shots can miss moving targets even while locked on.
  • Greatbows are extremely powerful but have slow firing and recovery animations.
  • Maximum damage often requires more preparation than a conventional weapon build.

Starting Class, Attribute Leveling and Distribution

Bow builds benefit most from Dexterity, Vigor, and Endurance, with Strength primarily being used to meet weapon requirements. Most bows have relatively modest attribute scaling, so survivability and Stamina should not be sacrificed simply to push an offensive stat as quickly as possible.

For the main progression, we will focus on a Dexterity-based archer. This works naturally with fast bows such as the Black Bow and eventually gives us enough Dexterity to use Ansbach's Longbow, which has the highest Dexterity requirement among standard Bows.

The Samurai is the ideal starting class because it begins with a Longbow and already has 15 Dexterity, allowing you to start playing as an archer immediately.

Early on, prioritize Vigor and Dexterity while adding some Endurance. Bow builds constantly consume Stamina through firing, sprinting, jumping, and rolling, making Endurance more valuable than it may initially appear.

By around level 50, 30 Dexterity and 25 Vigor provide a solid foundation. You should also have enough Endurance to comfortably fire several arrows while preserving Stamina for repositioning.

At level 100, aim for around 40 Vigor and 50 Dexterity. From here, continue raising both survivability and damage while gradually adding more Endurance.

At level 150, 60 Vigor and 80 Dexterity create a straightforward endgame DEX archer. This comfortably exceeds the 43 Dexterity requirement of Ansbach's Longbow while also supporting other Dexterity-oriented ranged weapons. The Black Bow is another natural fit for this progression and has the mobile running attacks normally associated with Light Bows.

Why So Much Endurance?

Endurance isn't only about Equip Load on a Bow build.

Firing arrows consumes Stamina, and mobile bow gameplay frequently combines sprinting, jumping, rolling, and attacking in quick succession. Running out of Stamina can leave you unable to fire or dodge when you need it most.

For that reason, 25-30 Endurance is much more useful here than spending every spare level on additional damage.

What About Mind?

Most regular bow attacks do not consume FP, so Mind is much less important than it is for caster builds.

However, Bow Skills such as Barrage, Rain of Arrows, and other unique Skills do consume FP. A small investment into Mind makes these easier to use without sacrificing too many levels from your core attributes.

If you rarely use weapon Skills, you can leave Mind lower and invest those points into Endurance or another attribute instead.

Strength / Greatbow Alternative

If you specifically want to build around Greatbows, the attribute distribution changes considerably.

Greatbows are slower and heavier than standard Bows but compensate with high individual hit damage, extreme range, and strong knockback. Several Greatbows also require significantly more Strength, making a pure Dexterity progression less appropriate.

For a Greatbow-focused character, prioritize:

  • 60 Vigor → Weapon Requirements → Strength/Dexterity based on your chosen Greatbow → 25-30 Endurance

Don't automatically take Dexterity to 80 if your chosen Greatbow benefits more from Strength.

The Golem Greatbow, for example, is obtained from Greatbow-wielding Guardian Golems and naturally fits a heavier ranged playstyle.

The Lion Greatbow provides another build-around option for Radahn-themed setups, while Shadow of the Erdtree adds Igon's Greatbow for players who want a dedicated Dragon-hunting ranged setup.

Rather than trying to make one stat spread support every Greatbow, choose the Greatbow you actually want to use and build around its individual requirements and scaling.

Don't Overvalue Bow Scaling

One of the biggest mistakes when leveling a Bow build is assuming that taking your damage stat as high as possible will produce the same returns as it does on many melee builds.

Most bows have relatively modest attribute scaling, which means weapon upgrades, arrow choice, Talismans, Skills, and exploiting enemy weaknesses can have a huge impact on your actual damage.

Your first priorities should therefore remain:

  • Meet weapon requirements → maintain good Vigor → upgrade your bow → maintain enough Stamina → increase your primary damage stat

A dead archer with 80 Dexterity deals no damage, and sacrificing most of your HP for a relatively small increase in bow AR isn't worth it.

Best Weapons for Bow Builds

Unlike most weapon builds, an archer benefits greatly from carrying multiple bows at the same time. Light Bows excel during fast boss fights, standard Bows provide stronger general-purpose shots, and Greatbows give you access to powerful long-range burst damage.

Your bow also determines which Skills and firing techniques are available, so there isn't one weapon that is automatically best for every encounter.

Best Early-Game Bow Weapons

Longbow — Best Starting Bow

Longbow — Best Starting Bow

Requirements: Strength - 9 / Dexterity - 14

The Longbow is an excellent starting point for any dedicated archer and comes equipped with Mighty Shot, allowing you to trade additional FP and draw time for a significantly stronger shot.

Samurai characters begin with one, which is another reason why Samurai is our recommended starting class.

It won't remain your best weapon forever, but it is more than capable of carrying an archer through the early game while you collect stronger and more specialized bows.

Location: Starting equipment for the Samurai, or purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold.

Shortbow — Best Early Mobile Bow

Shortbow — Best Early Mobile Bow

Requirements: Strength - 8 / Dexterity - 10

The Shortbow sacrifices raw damage and range for a much faster and more mobile moveset.

Unlike standard Bows, Light Bows can quickly fire after rolling, jumping, and sprinting, making them much easier to use against aggressive enemies.

This makes the Shortbow a great introduction to the playstyle that later weapons such as the Black Bow and Ansbach's Longbow expand upon.

Location: Purchased from the Nomadic Merchant near Coastal Cave in Limgrave.

Horn Bow — Best Early Magic Bow

Horn Bow — Best Early Magic Bow

Requirements: Strength - 10 / Dexterity - 14 / Intelligence - 12

The Horn Bow deals both Physical and Magic damage and gains additional synergy when using Dwelling Arrows, making it an interesting early option against enemies vulnerable to Magic.

The Intelligence requirement prevents it from fitting perfectly into our pure Dexterity progression, so don't invest in Intelligence specifically for this weapon unless you actually intend to use it for a significant portion of the game.

Location: Found in Siofra River, underneath the staircase leading toward Hallowhorn Grounds.

Best Bows to Build Around

Ansbach's Longbow — Best DLC Bow

Ansbach's Longbow — Best DLC Bow

Requirements: Strength - 9 / Dexterity - 43

Ansbach's Longbow is one of the most important additions to dedicated bow builds in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Despite being classified as a Bow, it uses the mobile firing moveset associated with Light Bows, allowing quick shots after rolling, sprinting, and jumping. This gives it excellent mobility while retaining the properties of a full-sized Bow.

Its Unique Skill, Fan Shot, rapidly fires eight arrows in a horizontal spread. At close to medium range, multiple arrows can hit the same target, giving the Skill excellent burst and status potential.

The massive 43 Dexterity requirement makes it clearly designed for dedicated DEX archers, which fits perfectly into our main progression.

Location: Obtained through Sir Ansbach's questline in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Black Bow — Best Base-Game Mobile Bow

Black Bow — Best Base-Game Mobile Bow

Requirements: Strength - 9 / Dexterity - 20

The Black Bow remains one of the best base-game weapons for a dedicated archer.

Like Ansbach's Longbow, it is technically a standard Bow but uses the Light Bow firing moveset. This allows you to quickly attack after jumping, rolling, or sprinting while still using standard arrows.

Its Skill, Barrage, rapidly fires arrows at reduced individual damage. This is particularly useful for applying status effects because it allows multiple arrows to connect in quick succession.

Its combination of mobility, Barrage, and relatively low requirements makes the Black Bow an excellent all-purpose weapon for the later parts of the base game.

Location: Found on a rooftop in Leyndell, Royal Capital.

Bone Bow — Best DLC Homing Bow

Bone Bow — Best DLC Homing Bow

Requirements: Strength - 8 / Dexterity - 11

The Bone Bow is a Light Bow introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree with an extremely useful Unique Skill called Rancor Shot.

Rancor Shot fires spectral projectiles alongside your arrows that track the target, making the weapon much more reliable against enemies that frequently move or dodge conventional arrows.

Its low requirements also mean practically any Bow build can equip it without altering their attributes.

The raw damage isn't the main reason to use it. Instead, the tracking behavior gives it a useful niche against enemies that are otherwise frustrating to hit consistently.

Location: Found in Belurat, Tower Settlement in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Pulley Bow — Best Long-Range Bow

Pulley Bow — Best Long-Range Bow

Requirements: Strength - 11 / Dexterity - 11

The Pulley Bow is one of the best options when maximum effective range is more important than mobility.

Its unique pulley mechanism gives it exceptional range, making it excellent for sniping enemies, clearing dangerous areas from safety, and initiating encounters before enemies can retaliate.

It comes with Mighty Shot and cannot change its Skill, so it doesn't provide the flexibility of some other standard Bows.

For exploration and long-distance engagements, however, the Pulley Bow remains extremely useful.

Location: Found on top of a siege tower near Gelmir Hero's Grave on Mt. Gelmir.

Albinauric Bow — Best Customizable Dexterity Bow

Albinauric Bow — Best Customizable Dexterity Bow

Requirements: Strength - 7 / Dexterity - 18

The Albinauric Bow is an excellent traditional Bow for Dexterity-focused characters.

Unlike unique options such as Black Bow, its Ash of War can be changed. This gives you access to Skills such as Rain of Arrows, allowing the weapon to be adapted around your preferred playstyle.

It also has strong Dexterity scaling for a Bow, making it a natural fit for our high-DEX progression.

If you want a conventional Bow with more Skill customization than Black Bow or Ansbach's Longbow, the Albinauric Bow is one of the strongest choices.

Location: Dropped by Albinauric Wolfback Archers in the Consecrated Snowfield.

Golem Greatbow — Best Raw-Damage Greatbow

Golem Greatbow — Best Raw-Damage Greatbow

Requirements: Strength - 24 / Dexterity - 18

The Golem Greatbow is one of the strongest choices for players who want enormous individual ranged hits.

Its high Strength requirement makes it better suited to the alternative Greatbow progression than our pure Dexterity setup, but its raw damage and range make it extremely effective when you have enough time to safely fire.

It works particularly well with Golem's Great Arrows, turning the build into a much slower but extremely powerful ranged artillery setup.

Location: Dropped by Greatbow-wielding Guardian Golems.

Lion Greatbow — Best Radahn Greatbow

Lion Greatbow — Best Radahn Greatbow

Requirements: Strength - 22 / Dexterity - 18

The Lion Greatbow is obtained from Starscourge Radahn's Remembrance and comes with the Unique Skill Radahn's Rain.

Radahn's Rain launches a barrage of arrows into the air that rain down around the targeted area. Against large enemies, multiple projectiles can connect and deal substantial damage.

The Lion Greatbow also provides a passive damage bonus to Radahn's Spears while held, giving it a natural ammunition choice.

It requires considerably more commitment than a fast Bow, but it is an excellent secondary weapon when fighting large targets or taking advantage of long openings.

Location: Obtained by exchanging the Remembrance of the Starscourge with Finger Reader Enia.

Igon's Greatbow — Best Dragon-Hunting Greatbow

Igon's Greatbow — Best Dragon-Hunting Greatbow

Requirements: Strength - 23 / Dexterity - 16

Igon's Greatbow is a Shadow of the Erdtree Greatbow designed specifically around hunting Dragons.

Its Unique Skill, Igon's Drake Hunt, fires a powerful twisting shot accompanied by Igon's roar. The Skill deals additional damage against Dragon enemies, making it a specialized but extremely thematic choice for encounters involving Dragons.

The bow also increases the damage of Igon's Harpoons while held, giving it its own dedicated Great Arrow setup.

Outside Dragon encounters, other Greatbows may provide better general-purpose performance, but against its intended targets, Igon's Greatbow has a clear niche.

Location: Obtained from Igon during or after progressing his questline in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Honorable Mentions

Serpent Bow

The Serpent Bow has innate Arcane scaling and increases Poison buildup when firing Poison-type arrows. It can be useful for a specialized status archer, but its Arcane requirement and scaling don't naturally fit our pure Dexterity progression.

Pulley Crossbow

Technically a Crossbow rather than a Bow, but its rapid three-bolt burst makes it useful for applying status effects. It can complement an archer build even though it doesn't scale with your attributes like a conventional Bow.

Harp Bow

A lightweight Bow with low requirements and a unique appearance. It is perfectly usable but lacks the damage, mobility, or specialized advantages of the stronger options above.

Erdtree Bow

The Erdtree Bow scales partly with Faith and deals Holy damage, making it much more appropriate for a Faith archer than our Dexterity setup.

Greatbow

The standard Greatbow remains a perfectly functional heavy ranged weapon and can change its Ash of War, giving it more flexibility than several unique Greatbows. It is particularly useful if you want to build around Rain of Arrows without committing to a unique weapon.

Which Bows Should You Carry?

A dedicated archer doesn't need to choose only one.

A strong late-game setup could carry:

  • Ansbach's Longbow or Black Bow → mobile boss fights and general combat
  • Pulley Bow → extreme-range sniping and exploration
  • Golem/Lion Greatbow → heavy burst against large enemies
  • Bone Bow → highly mobile or evasive enemies

This is one of the major advantages of a Bow build. Your ammunition is shared between compatible weapons, so switching bows lets you completely change your firing style without changing your entire character.

Best Arrows and Ammunition for Bow Builds

Choosing the right ammunition is one of the most important parts of playing a Bow build. Since bows can use arrows with different damage types and status effects, changing ammunition lets you adapt to an encounter without changing your weapon or attributes.

Rather than carrying every arrow available, focus on a selection that covers raw damage, Bleed, Poison, Scarlet Rot, Frostbite, and elemental weaknesses.

Bloodbone Arrow — Best Bleed Arrow

Bloodbone Arrow — Best Bleed Arrow

Bloodbone Arrows deal Physical damage while building Blood Loss, making them one of the best general-purpose status arrows.

Bleed is especially effective against bosses with large health pools, and fast weapons such as the Black Bow can use Barrage to rapidly build the status.

They are most valuable against enemies that can actually bleed, so switch ammunition against immune or highly resistant targets.

Crafting: Crafted using Thin Beast Bones and Bloodrose after obtaining the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [6].

Rotbone Arrow — Best Scarlet Rot Arrow

Rotbone Arrow — Best Scarlet Rot Arrow

Rotbone Arrows allow your Bow build to inflict Scarlet Rot from range.

Against susceptible bosses, applying Rot early allows the status to continue dealing damage while you focus on dodging and firing other ammunition.

Fast multi-hit Skills are particularly useful for building Rot quickly before switching back to stronger raw-damage arrows.

Crafting: Crafted using Thin Beast Bones and Aeonian Butterflies after obtaining the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [15].

Because Aeonian Butterflies are considerably less convenient to obtain than many other crafting materials, Rotbone Arrows are best saved for encounters where Scarlet Rot provides meaningful value.

Poisonbone Arrow — Best Accessible Damage-over-Time Option

Poisonbone Arrow — Best Accessible Damage-over-Time Option

Poisonbone Arrows provide a much more accessible status option than Scarlet Rot.

Poison deals less damage than Scarlet Rot, but the ammunition is easier to produce in large quantities and can provide useful passive damage during longer encounters.

Apply Poison, then switch back to stronger arrows while the effect continues dealing damage.

Crafting: Crafted using Thin Beast Bones and Poisonbloom after obtaining the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [3].

Coldbone Arrow — Best Frostbite Arrow

Coldbone Arrow — Best Frostbite Arrow

Coldbone Arrows build Frostbite, giving Bow builds another excellent way to exploit repeated hits.

Triggering Frostbite deals an immediate burst of damage and temporarily increases the damage the affected enemy receives.

This makes Frostbite particularly useful as an opener: trigger the status, then switch to your strongest ammunition while the debuff remains active.

Crafting: Crafted using Thin Beast Bones and Rimed Crystal Buds after obtaining the Glintstone Craftsman's Cookbook [7].

Stormwing Bone Arrow — Best Physical Arrow

Stormwing Bone Arrow — Best Physical Arrow

Stormwing Bone Arrows are among the strongest craftable options when you simply want high Physical damage without relying on a status effect.

They have significantly higher base Physical damage than standard Bone Arrows and also deal increased stance damage, making them excellent against enemies where elemental or status ammunition provides little advantage.

Their main limitation is the need for Stormhawk Feathers, making them less convenient to continuously produce than normal arrows.

Crafting: Crafted using Thin Beast Bones and Stormhawk Feathers after obtaining the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [10].

Fire Arrow — Best Fire Option

Fire Arrow — Best Fire Option

Fire Arrows provide straightforward Fire damage and are useful against enemies vulnerable to the element.

Unlike many specialized crafted arrows, they can simply be purchased, making them much easier to maintain as part of your regular ammunition supply.

They are also useful for environmental interactions involving Fire.

Location: Can be purchased infinitely from the Nomadic Merchant in eastern Caelid.

Golden Arrow — Best Holy Option

Golden Arrow — Best Holy Option

Golden Arrows deal Physical and Holy damage, providing an easy way to exploit enemies that are vulnerable to Holy damage.

They are particularly useful against certain undead enemies and give the build another elemental option without requiring any investment into Faith.

Location: Purchased from the Hermit Merchant in the Capital Outskirts.

Dwelling Arrow — Best Magic Option

Dwelling Arrow — Best Magic Option

Dwelling Arrows deal Magic damage and are particularly effective when combined with the Horn Bow, which further supports Magic-based arrow damage.

Even without the Horn Bow, they provide a convenient way to target enemies with poor Magic resistance.

Location: Can be purchased from the Imprisoned Merchant in Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum.

Serpent Arrow — Best Poison Alternative

Serpent Arrow — Best Poison Alternative

Serpent Arrows inflict significantly more Poison buildup than standard Poisonbone Arrows, making them excellent when you want to trigger Poison quickly.

They are particularly effective with the Serpent Bow, but they don't require that weapon to apply Poison effectively.

Their biggest advantage is that they can simply be purchased rather than crafted, making them much easier to stockpile.

Location: Purchased infinitely from the Isolated Merchant in Dragonbarrow.

Igon's Harpoon — Best Dragon-Hunting Great Arrow

Igon's Harpoon — Best Dragon-Hunting Great Arrow

Igon's Harpoons are specialized Great Arrows introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree.

They pair naturally with Igon's Greatbow, which increases their damage while held, creating a dedicated Greatbow setup for fighting Dragons.

Outside of Dragon-focused encounters, more general Great Arrow options may be preferable, but the combination gives Igon's Greatbow a clear specialized role.

Location: Can be obtained through Igon's questline in Shadow of the Erdtree and subsequently purchased after obtaining the appropriate Bell Bearing.

Status Arrows and Barrage

One of the strongest advantages of fast bows is their ability to apply status effects from a safe distance.

Skills such as Barrage sacrifice some individual arrow damage in exchange for firing considerably faster. This makes them particularly effective with:

  • Bloodbone Arrows → Blood Loss
  • Rotbone Arrows → Scarlet Rot
  • Poison/Serpent Arrows → Poison
  • Coldbone Arrows → Frostbite

Once the desired status triggers, switch ammunition rather than continuing to fire weaker status arrows unnecessarily.

For example:

  • Apply Scarlet Rot → trigger Frostbite → switch to high-damage Physical arrows

You don't need to stack multiple statuses in every encounter, but having several available allows the build to adapt to different enemy resistances.

Don't Waste Rare Ammunition

Bow builds consume ammunition constantly, so resource management matters much more than it does for conventional weapons.

Use inexpensive purchased or easily crafted arrows for normal enemies and exploration, then save rarer ammunition such as Rotbone and Stormwing Bone Arrows for bosses and difficult encounters.

Maintaining a large supply of basic arrows also prevents you from wasting valuable crafting materials simply because you ran out of cheaper ammunition.

Carry Multiple Arrow Types

A good general-purpose inventory should include:

  • Standard/Physical Arrows → normal exploration
  • Blood Arrows → Bleed-vulnerable bosses
  • Rot Arrows → long boss encounters
  • Cold Arrows → Frostbite
  • Fire/Magic/Holy Arrows → exploiting elemental weaknesses

Greatbow users should similarly keep a supply of Great Arrows alongside any specialized ammunition required by their chosen weapon.

A Bow build becomes significantly stronger when you stop thinking of arrows as simple ammunition and start treating them as part of the build itself.

Best Ashes of War and Bow Skills

Bow Skills are an important part of ranged combat, allowing you to trade FP for higher damage, faster firing, better accuracy, or improved status buildup. Not every Bow can change its Ash of War, so your available Skills will partly depend on which weapon you choose.

Rain of Arrows — Best Overall Bow Ash of War

Rain of Arrows fires an arrow into the air before causing a large volley to rain down around the targeted enemy.

The Skill is especially powerful against large bosses, where multiple arrows from the volley can connect with the same target. It also only consumes a single arrow despite firing multiple projectiles, making it surprisingly ammunition-efficient.

Rain of Arrows can use the properties of your equipped ammunition, allowing it to contribute to Bleed, Poison, Scarlet Rot, Frostbite, and elemental damage depending on the arrow selected.

This makes it one of the strongest and most versatile Ashes of War available to compatible Bows and Greatbows.

Location: Obtained from the Redmane Painting puzzle in Caelid.

Barrage — Best for Status Buildup

Barrage allows you to rapidly fire arrows in succession at the cost of reduced damage per individual shot.

Its greatest strength is status application. Rapidly firing Blood, Poison, Rot, or Cold arrows lets you build their respective status effects much faster than normal shots.

Once the status activates, switch back to stronger ammunition or regular attacks rather than continuing to sacrifice damage unnecessarily.

Barrage is also the default Skill of the Black Bow, making it one of the reasons that weapon is so effective for mobile status-focused gameplay.

Location: Obtained from a Teardrop Scarab north of Seethewater River on Mt. Gelmir.

Mighty Shot — Best Early-Game Skill

Mighty Shot provides a simple but effective way to increase the damage of individual arrows.

The Skill performs a more powerful shot that can partially penetrate an enemy's guard, making it particularly useful when initiating fights or attacking enemies that haven't reached you yet.

It lacks the status potential of Barrage or the multi-hit damage of Rain of Arrows, but its low complexity and early availability make it excellent throughout the beginning of the game.

The Samurai's starting Longbow already comes equipped with Mighty Shot, giving the build immediate access to it.

Location: Default Skill on several Bows, including the Longbow. The Ash of War can also be obtained from a Teardrop Scarab in Limgrave.

Enchanted Shot — Best Tracking Skill

Enchanted Shot empowers an arrow with magic before firing a projectile that tracks its target.

This makes it particularly useful against fast or evasive enemies that frequently move out of the path of normal arrows.

The Skill doesn't offer the raw damage potential of Rain of Arrows or the status buildup of Barrage, but improved consistency can be more valuable when fighting enemies that are difficult to hit normally.

Location: Obtained from a Teardrop Scarab in Nokron, Eternal City.

Sky Shot — Best Situational Utility Skill

Sky Shot fires an arrow high into the air before causing it to descend onto the targeted enemy.

The unusual trajectory allows the attack to hit enemies from angles that normal shots cannot easily reach.

Its practical combat applications are more limited than the stronger Bow Skills, so it should be treated as a situational utility option rather than a primary damage Skill.

Location: Obtained from a Teardrop Scarab in Caelid.

Notable Unique Bow Skills

Several of the best ranged weapons cannot change their Ash of War, but compensate with powerful Unique Skills.

Fan Shot — Ansbach's Longbow

Fan Shot rapidly fires eight arrows in a horizontal spread.

At the correct distance, several projectiles can connect with the same enemy, giving Ansbach's Longbow excellent burst potential. The rapid number of hits also makes ammunition selection especially important.

Because Fan Shot is exclusive to Ansbach's Longbow, it cannot be transferred to another weapon.

Rancor Shot — Bone Bow

Rancor Shot fires an arrow accompanied by spectral projectiles that aggressively track the targeted enemy.

Its tracking makes the Bone Bow particularly useful against fast and evasive targets where conventional bow attacks frequently miss.

This gives the Bone Bow a very different niche from pure damage-focused options.

Radahn's Rain — Lion Greatbow

Radahn's Rain launches a volley of Great Arrows into the air before they rain down over the targeted area.

The Skill is particularly dangerous against large enemies, where multiple arrows can connect during the same cast.

Combined with Radahn's Spears and the Lion Greatbow's passive bonus to that ammunition, it provides a powerful specialized Greatbow setup.

Igon's Drake Hunt — Igon's Greatbow

Igon's Drake Hunt fires a powerful twisting Great Arrow designed specifically for hunting Dragons.

Its specialization makes it less universally useful than some other Bow Skills, but it becomes significantly more valuable during Dragon encounters, especially when combined with Igon's Harpoons.

Choosing Your Bow Skill

For general use, the strongest options are:

  • Rain of Arrows → large enemies and burst damage
  • Barrage → rapid status buildup
  • Mighty Shot → efficient single-target damage
  • Enchanted Shot → fast or evasive enemies

Your unique weapon may already provide a Skill that defines its role, so don't choose a Bow purely based on raw Attack Rating. Ansbach's Longbow, Bone Bow, Black Bow, and the various Greatbows all provide different tools that can completely change how you approach an encounter.

Best Armor for Bow Builds

Bow builds rely heavily on mobility and positioning, so armor should never interfere with your ability to quickly create distance from enemies.

Unlike many melee builds, archers gain relatively little from extremely high Poise. Ideally, stay at Medium Equip Load, while Light Load can also be an excellent option for players who want maximum dodge distance and mobility.

There is no mandatory armor set for Bow builds, so prioritize useful passive bonuses and efficient lightweight armor rather than simply wearing the heaviest equipment available.

Rakshasa Set — Best Offensive Option

Rakshasa Set

The Rakshasa Set increases the damage you deal with each equipped piece, making it one of the few armor sets that can directly improve an archer's damage.

Bow builds can take particularly good advantage of this because fighting at range helps compensate for the set's increased damage taken.

You also don't need to wear the entire set. Individual Rakshasa pieces can be mixed with lighter armor to maintain your preferred Equip Load.

Location: Dropped by Rakshasa in the Eastern Nameless Mausoleum in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Black Knife Set — Best Lightweight Utility Option

Black Knife Set

The Black Knife Set is a relatively lightweight armor set with a useful passive effect that muffles the sound of your movement.

This doesn't increase bow damage directly, but it works well with the archer playstyle during exploration. Quiet movement makes it easier to position yourself before combat and take advantage of long-range opening attacks.

The set also provides reasonable protection without requiring the Equip Load investment of heavy armor.

Location: Found beneath the staircase behind Ordina, Liturgical Town, in the Consecrated Snowfield.

Raptor's Black Feathers — Best for Jump Attack Playstyles

Raptor's Black Feathers

Raptor's Black Feathers increases the damage of jump attacks, making it particularly interesting for aggressive Light Bow-style gameplay.

Weapons such as the Black Bow and Ansbach's Longbow allow you to make excellent use of jumping shots while maintaining movement, so the chest piece fits naturally into a highly mobile archer setup.

It can easily be combined with lighter armor pieces in the remaining slots.

Location: Found inside Sage's Cave in Altus Plateau.

Light or Medium Mixed Armor — Best General Setup

For most Bow builds, mixed armor is the best overall choice.

Choose individual pieces that provide reasonable defenses while keeping your Equip Load comfortably below Heavy Load. Medium Load gives you the standard dodge roll without requiring major investment into Endurance purely for equipment weight.

Players who prioritize maximum mobility can instead aim for Light Load, which provides a longer roll distance and makes creating space from aggressive enemies easier.

Choosing Your Armor

For maximum damage:

  • Rakshasa pieces while maintaining Medium Load

For mobile exploration:

  • Black Knife Set or other lightweight armor

For aggressive jumping attacks:

  • Raptor's Black Feathers + lightweight armor

For general progression:

  • Use the best defensive armor available while remaining at Medium or Light Equip Load

Avoid building around extremely heavy armor simply for additional Poise. A Bow build's primary defense is distance and mobility, and maintaining the ability to quickly reposition is more valuable than attempting to trade attacks with enemies.

Best Talismans for Bow Builds

Talismans are especially important for Bow builds because relatively weak weapon scaling means that direct damage bonuses, range improvements, and Skill enhancements can have a noticeable impact on overall performance.

Your ideal setup also depends on whether you primarily use regular shots, rapid attacks, Bow Skills, or Greatbows.

Arrow's Soaring Sting Talisman — Best Overall Bow Talisman

Arrow's Soaring Sting Talisman

The Arrow's Soaring Sting Talisman is one of the best additions to Bow builds in Shadow of the Erdtree.

It combines the effects associated with ranged damage and effective range, increasing the damage of arrows and bolts by 8% while also increasing their effective range.

The additional range is particularly valuable because arrows normally suffer from damage falloff over longer distances. This allows you to maintain stronger damage while taking advantage of one of the Bow build's greatest strengths: fighting enemies from outside their normal attack range.

Location: Found in Fog Rift Fort in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Arrow's Sting Talisman — Best Base-Game Bow Talisman

Arrow's Sting Talisman — Best Base-Game Bow Talisman

The Arrow's Sting Talisman increases the damage dealt by arrows and bolts by 10%, making it one of the most straightforward damage upgrades available to an archer.

It works with Bows, Light Bows, and Greatbows, so it remains useful regardless of which ranged weapon you prefer.

Once you enter Shadow of the Erdtree, Arrow's Soaring Sting Talisman provides another powerful ranged option, but Arrow's Sting remains excellent throughout the entire base game.

Location: Found in a chest at Redmane Castle in Caelid.

Arrow's Reach Talisman — Best Early Range Option

Arrow's Reach Talisman

The Arrow's Reach Talisman increases the effective range of arrows and bolts.

It doesn't directly increase your Attack Power, but additional effective range means your projectiles can maintain their damage and accuracy over greater distances.

This is especially useful during exploration, when using the Pulley Bow, or when deliberately sniping enemies before entering their aggro range.

It becomes less important once you obtain Arrow's Soaring Sting Talisman, which provides both range and damage in a single slot.

Location: Found inside a tower above Stormgate in Limgrave.

Shard of Alexander — Best Bow Skill Talisman

Shard of Alexander

The Shard of Alexander increases Skill damage by 15%.

This is an excellent choice when your setup relies heavily on damaging Bow Skills such as Rain of Arrows, Fan Shot, Radahn's Rain, Rancor Shot, or Igon's Drake Hunt.

It provides much less value if you mostly use regular bow attacks, so treat it as a build-dependent option rather than a mandatory Talisman.

Location: Obtained at the end of Iron Fist Alexander's questline in Crumbling Farum Azula.

Ritual Sword Talisman — Best Long-Range Damage Option

Ritual Sword Talisman

The Ritual Sword Talisman increases your damage by 10% while at full HP.

Bow builds are particularly well suited to maintaining this condition because you frequently fight from range and can potentially avoid taking damage entirely.

During exploration and long-range engagements, this can provide an extremely consistent damage increase. Against aggressive bosses that constantly force you into close combat, maintaining full HP becomes considerably harder.

Location: Found in Lux Ruins in Altus Plateau.

Spear Talisman — Best for Pierce Counterattacks

Spear Talisman

Most arrows deal Pierce damage, allowing Bow builds to take advantage of Pierce counterattacks when striking enemies during certain parts of their attack animations.

The Spear Talisman increases the damage of these counterattacks, giving aggressive archers another way to improve their regular shot damage.

This is most useful against enemies where you can consistently fire during their attacks rather than simply maintaining maximum distance.

Location: Found inside Lakeside Crystal Cave in Liurnia of the Lakes.

Two-Headed Turtle Talisman — Best Stamina Option

Two-Headed Turtle Talisman

The Two-Headed Turtle Talisman greatly increases Stamina recovery speed.

Bow combat constantly consumes Stamina through firing, sprinting, jumping, and rolling, making faster recovery surprisingly valuable during aggressive boss fights.

It doesn't increase your damage directly, but it allows you to maintain pressure while preserving enough Stamina to reposition or dodge.

Before entering Shadow of the Erdtree, the Green Turtle Talisman provides a weaker base-game alternative.

Location: Found in a cave behind a waterfall in Gravesite Plain in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Choosing Your Talismans

For a general Dexterity Bow setup:

  • Arrow's Soaring Sting Talisman + Arrow's Sting Talisman + Ritual Sword Talisman + flexible fourth slot

For the fourth slot, use:

  • Shard of Alexander when relying heavily on Bow Skills.
  • Two-Headed Turtle Talisman for Stamina management.
  • Spear Talisman for aggressive Pierce counterattack setups.
  • Arrow's Reach Talisman during base-game progression or when maximum range is particularly valuable.

Greatbow builds can also make excellent use of Shard of Alexander when relying on Skills such as Radahn's Rain, Rain of Arrows, or Igon's Drake Hunt.

The main advantage of Bow Talismans is that several bonuses can be stacked together. Dedicated archers should take advantage of these ranged-specific Talismans rather than filling every slot with generic Dexterity or defensive options.

Bow Build Playstyle Tips

Bow builds require a different approach from conventional melee characters. Your biggest advantages are range, mobility, and access to multiple ammunition types, but maintaining those advantages becomes increasingly difficult against aggressive enemies and bosses.

The key is learning how to deal damage while constantly repositioning rather than standing still and repeatedly firing charged shots.

Use Jumping Attacks to Stay Mobile

Jump shots are one of the most important techniques for aggressive Bow gameplay.

Light Bows and weapons with the Light Bow moveset, such as the Black Bow and Ansbach's Longbow, can quickly fire while jumping and follow up shortly after landing.

This allows you to attack while repositioning, making it much safer than standing still and drawing repeated normal shots.

Jump attacks are particularly useful when moving away from an approaching enemy because you can create distance while continuing to deal damage.

Learn to Use Roll and Sprint Shots

Mobile bows can quickly fire after rolling or sprinting, allowing you to turn defensive movement into offensive pressure.

Against aggressive bosses, dodge an attack and immediately respond with a quick shot rather than attempting a slower standard attack.

These attacks deal less burst damage than some Bow Skills, but their speed makes them one of the most reliable ways to maintain consistent damage throughout a fight.

Don't Always Fight at Maximum Range

Range is one of your greatest advantages, but constantly trying to stay as far away as possible can actually make some fights harder.

Enemies may become more aggressive when closing distance, arrows can suffer from range-related damage falloff, and moving targets become harder to hit from extreme distances.

Instead, learn the effective range of your chosen Bow and maintain enough distance to react safely without unnecessarily reducing your accuracy or damage.

Switch Arrows Based on the Enemy

A dedicated archer should never rely on one ammunition type for every encounter.

Use Blood arrows against enemies vulnerable to Bleed, Rot against susceptible high-HP bosses, Frostbite when you want its damage and debuff, and elemental arrows when an enemy has an exploitable weakness.

Against enemies resistant or immune to status effects, switch back to strong Physical or appropriate elemental ammunition rather than wasting valuable arrows.

Apply Status Then Switch Ammunition

Status arrows don't need to remain equipped after their status has triggered.

For example:

  • Apply Scarlet Rot → trigger Frostbite → switch to high-damage arrows

Scarlet Rot continues dealing damage after application, while Frostbite provides its own burst and debuff. Continuing to fire expensive status ammunition after it has already served its purpose often wastes both damage and resources.

This is especially important with limited crafting materials such as Aeonian Butterflies.

Use Barrage for Status Application

Barrage is one of your best tools for rapidly applying Bleed, Poison, Scarlet Rot, or Frostbite.

Individual shots deal reduced damage, but the increased firing speed allows status buildup to accumulate quickly.

Once the status activates, return to regular attacks or switch to stronger ammunition.

Think of Barrage primarily as a status application tool, not something that needs to replace every normal shot.

Use Rain of Arrows Against Large Targets

Rain of Arrows becomes significantly stronger against large enemies because multiple projectiles from the volley can connect.

This makes it particularly effective against large bosses and Dragons, especially when combined with ammunition that provides additional damage or status buildup.

Smaller and highly mobile enemies are much less reliable targets, so don't force the Skill into encounters where most of the volley will miss.

Open Fights With Your Strongest Slow Attacks

Greatbows and slower Skills are much easier to use before the enemy reaches you.

During exploration, take advantage of your range by opening with a Greatbow, Mighty Shot, or another powerful ranged Skill before switching to your faster Bow once the enemy closes the distance.

Against bosses, stance breaks, and long recovery animations provide similar opportunities for Greatbow attacks.

Don't Use Greatbows Like Light Bows

Greatbows provide enormous range, strong individual hits, and knockback, but their long firing animations make them dangerous when used carelessly.

Instead of constantly firing, wait for clear openings and treat each Greatbow shot more like a heavy melee attack.

You can also carry both weapon types:

  • Light Bow-style weapon → constant mobile pressure
  • Greatbow → large openings and long-range burst

There is no reason a dedicated archer needs to restrict themselves to one bow.

Use Free Aim When Lock-On Works Against You

Lock-on is convenient, but it isn't always the best way to fire a Bow.

Against distant or predictably moving enemies, manual aiming can give you more control over where the arrow travels. It is also useful when targeting specific enemies from outside normal lock-on range.

Learning when to switch between lock-on and manual aiming makes ranged exploration considerably easier.

Use Terrain to Your Advantage

Bow builds can exploit terrain much more effectively than most melee builds.

High ground, narrow passages, obstacles, and environmental cover can give you additional time to fire while forcing enemies to approach from predictable directions.

During exploration, look for a strong firing position before starting the encounter rather than immediately entering an enemy group.

Preserve Enough Stamina to Dodge

Firing, jumping, sprinting, and rolling all consume Stamina.

It is easy to repeatedly fire until your Stamina bar is empty, only to realize you cannot dodge the enemy's next attack.

Always leave enough Stamina for at least one defensive action, especially during boss fights. The Two-Headed Turtle Talisman can make maintaining pressure considerably easier.

Use Your Bow Skills Selectively

Bow Skills consume FP, so they should provide a meaningful advantage over simply firing another arrow.

Use Barrage for status buildup, Rain of Arrows against suitable large targets, and Skills such as Fan Shot or Radahn's Rain when you have an opening where their multi-hit potential can actually connect.

Against normal enemies, regular arrows are often more than enough.

Keep Cheap Arrows for Exploration

A Bow build can burn through ammunition extremely quickly.

Keep a large supply of inexpensive arrows for regular enemies and reserve Rotbone, Stormwing Bone, status, and specialized Great Arrows for situations where their additional effects matter.

This makes the build considerably less tedious and prevents difficult crafting materials from becoming a constant concern.

Adapt Your Bow, Not Just Your Arrows

Sometimes switching ammunition isn't enough.

The Black Bow and Ansbach's Longbow excel when mobility matters. The Pulley Bow is better when extreme range is useful. The Bone Bow helps against evasive targets, while Greatbows excel when you have large openings.

Carrying multiple upgraded bows allows you to change your playstyle without changing your entire build.

Take Advantage of Ranged Safety

Your biggest defensive advantage is the ability to deal damage without standing next to the enemy.

Don't throw that advantage away by becoming greedy. If an enemy closes the distance, reposition first and resume firing once you have created another safe opening.

A Bow build generally wins through consistent ranged pressure rather than trading damage.

The strongest archers constantly adapt. Switch bows for different situations, use the correct ammunition for enemy weaknesses, maintain pressure through mobile shots, and save slower Skills and Greatbows for openings where their additional damage is worth the commitment.
