RNG Explained (For Beginners)

Overview

As a roguelike variant of Elden Ring, Nightreign has many RNG elements that help guide each unique experience. With a wide variety of options available, players will need to adapt to the situation depending on what they encounter.

While much of what's found is up to chance, there are a number of things that remain the same between adventures.

In this guide we'll break down what you can expect to find, versus what you can reliably find.

Map Foundation

Fixed Elements

The base terrain remains consistent across all playthroughs. This includes the underlying map bedrock, which never changes unless altered by major events.

Permanent Structures

Explanation

Spectral Hawk Trees (and the Wind Currents they follow)

These are always in fixed locations and help with traversal.

Spiritstreams

These Landmarks remain static and typically help you reach higher areas.

Sites of Grace

Always found in the same spots across every run, and new ones will Spawn in the center of the arena after defeating the Evergaol Bosses.

Evergaols

These arenas consistently offer Boss Battles in each run.

Caves

The location of Caves is constant in every playthrough.

The large Castle located at the center of the Map

A fixed Landmark, unaffected by regular RNG systems, but the Loot inside is still randomized.

Randomized Elements

Explanation

Positions of Settlements

Each run repositions Forts, Settlements, and Camps unpredictably.

Churches

Always appear and always grant a Healing Upgrade, but never in the same location twice.

Sorcerer’s Rises

Their placement and loot yield shifts with each playthrough.

Exceptions

Major map-altering events called Shifting Earth, such as a large crater forming at the top of the map, can change even some of the fixed elements. These rare events can override the map structure's normal consistency or add new challenging Modifiers, such as a Boss that’ll attack you anywhere on the map.

Boss Encounters

Bosses are encountered at the end of each Night. These fights are guaranteed, but which Bosses you’ll have to fight are randomly assigned each run.

Additionally, there are many other Bosses to be encountered during your adventures.

Element

Explanation

Roaming Field Bosses (both enemy type and location)

You must explore to find these Bosses; both their identity and Spawn Points vary.

Shifting Earth Events

Can result in terrain shifts or trigger surprise Boss Fights like a Margit Invasion.

Evergaol Arenas

Always spawn bosses, although which Boss can vary.

Bosses in Settlements

Each settlement includes a Boss Fight, but the identity changes each run.

Loot Drops

Predictable Loot

Element

Explanation

Weapon Racks

Always provides some type of Weapons.

Scarab Drops

Generally Talismans, but specifics and rates vary. Drop rates are not confirmed, and some runs may produce more useful results than others.

Elemental or Status-Based Affinity

Items in Element or Status-themed Settlements reflect those themes. For example, Fire Settlements only drop Fire-Affinity gear.

Completely Random Loot

Explanation

Rewards from Bosses

Contents are randomized per kill, varying from Consumables, Buffs, or Weapons. No two Bosses will drop the same Loot between runs.

Contents of Chests

Completely random and not fixed to any one item or category. Consumables, Weapons, Upgrade Materials, etc.

Possible Loot Types

Explanation

Consumables

Healing, Weapon Buffs, Upgrade Materials.

Character Buffs

Permanent stat increases or playstyle-changing new Abilities.

Weapons

Ranged, Melee, or Incantation and Sorcery (magic-based type is random).

Resting

Resting is a mechanic that allows you to reroll the current modifiers that are on YOUR specific runs at the matchmaking menu, allowing you to sometimes avoid modifiers you don’t want or look for ones you want to play with.
