Professions are an important part of leveling up a character because they can massively boost gold income, provide self-crafted gear, and offer Campfire benefits. All professions can be broken down into Gathering, Crafting, or Secondary professions. You can learn a total of two professions from the Gathering or Crafting categories and all three Secondary professions.
Gathering
These professions are used to acquire resources for crafting professions and provide little
Herbalism - Pick up plants from the ground, a fairly decent farming option for Rogues since we'll want a lot of
Fadeleaf for
Blinding Powder later in the game. The camp benefit is Incense Candle, which increases Intellect so it isn’t something we’re particularly interested in using ourselves. Herbalism materials are mostly used by
Alchemy although you can also use some herbs with
First Aid now to make increasingly powerful
Healing Potions.
Mining - Mine ore nodes around the world that you can track. This is another good option for Rogues because many late-game ore nodes are found inside caves past hordes of monsters and we can just
Stealth right past most of them! The camp benefit here is Lodestone, which provides an Attack Power boost that is exclusive with
Blessing of Might, which can be a nice damage boost. Mining materials are mostly used by
Blacksmithing and
Engineering, but there are some recipes for
Alchemy as well.
Skinning - Remove the hide of most beasts and animals that you kill. This is a great option for Rogues because we will be killing a lot of skinnable enemies in the game, but most importantly we will be standing directly over them when they die. This allows us to skin enemies immediately, while some ranged classes may need to run over to the corpse first. The camp benefit is Camp Chair, which provides 2% Critical Strike Chance, which is a nice damage buff. Skinning materials are mostly used by
Leatherworking and
Tailoring.
Crafting
Alchemy - Create potions that provide short-term buffs. When paired with
Herbalism, this will give you easy access to potions like
Elixir of Lesser Agility and
Elixir of Ogre Strength for damage boosts, or others like Swim Speed Potions for utility. The camp benefit is Mana Well, which provides a mana restoration buff that is useless for us.
Blacksmithing - Create mail and plate armor, as well as weapons. This profession provides little to no gear for us. Yes, you can craft some weapons, but the large majority of crafting bonuses are going to be mail or plate armor, which we cannot use. The camp benefit is Sharpening Wheel, which increases Strength that is a okay bonus for us.”
Enchanting - Break down magical items and permanently boost your equipment. This profession can Disenchant green-rarity or better items to create crafting materials used in enchants. Enchants are incredibly useful for everyone and will be a mandatory part of your endgame gearing. However, any Enchanter can enchant your gear, so you don’t have to do it yourself. This profession is also considered one of the most expensive professions to level since you can't just go out and gather green-rarity items like you can ores, herbs, or skins. The camp benefit is Enchanted Lute, which increases Armor, All Stats, and Resistances exclusively with Druid's
Mark of the Wild.
Engineering - Make explosives and some toys. Paired with
Mining, this profession can provide some useful area-damage explosives like
Dark Iron Bomb, which are incredibly useful in PvP scenarios. This profession is also considered expensive to level since many of the best explosives also require Engineering to use. The camp benefit is Reagent Bot, which allows you to purchase reagents in the field. Overall, this doesn’t seem overly useful for us, since it neither sells Rogue poison reagents nor allows you to sell items.
Leatherworking - Turn leather into armor and armor kits. Paired with
Skinning, we can actually make some armor that we will use in the early game. Typically, by the time I make it to a major city for the first time, I can craft and equip the following:
Handstitched Leather Pants,
Handstitched Leather Belt,
Embossed Leather Cloak,
Embossed Leather Gloves, and
Light Leather Bracers. Combined with Light Leather Armor Kits, which add 1 Stamina and 8 Armor to chest, legs, hands, and feet, we pick up a lot of early-game stats from Leatherworking. Later on, we can even craft some bind-on-pickup gear like
Brawler's Leather Hood, but this may be expensive to make early on.
The campfire benefit is Camp Tent, which grants up to 5% rested experience as long as you don’t already have any. This effectively gives you extra experience equal to 2.5% of the experience needed for your current level, but it has a 1-hour cooldown before you can gain the benefit again. This is a great leveling tool and something I plan to stock up on and use on the hour.
Tailoring - Take cloth from humanoid enemies and turn it into armor, cloaks, and bags. This crafting profession is unique in that it does not have a natural gathering profession that it pairs with. Instead, you get cloth from killing humanoid enemies that you can then craft into useful items. Since we primarily wear leather armor, this doesn’t help us too much. The camp benefit is Faction Banner, which provides a Spirit buff that is decent for out-of-combat health recovery.
Secondary
You can learn all three of these professions without any penalty, and they all provide some useful benefits. The most important is
First Aid because you can learn to craft bandages, which can heal us between fights or even during combat if we use crowd control.
Cooking - Turn all that meat you find into buffs. While most food only provides a small stat buff, there are many options that provide 5% bonus experience from kills! These are great to consume just before killing enemies in the open world. Note that dungeon enemies have had their experience rewards drastically nerfed in Forever, so eating this food is less important in dungeons. Cooking is also how you learn to build Basic Campfires, which are required for placing any of the camping buffs. I recommend crafting a few of these to keep on hand while questing. Yes, they do stack.
First Aid - This is the most important profession for a Rogue to know. While it won't make you any money, a well-timed
Heavy Runecloth Bandage can save your life. We can use
Gouge or
Blind, or even
Kidney Shot in a pinch to get some quick healing during a fight, just make sure there are no damage-over-time effects on the enemy. You can now also make
Healing Potions from First Aid which can be a huge boon in combat as well. Lastly, you can also make items that will remove poisons, bleeds, and diseases while out of combat. The camp benefit is First Aid Kit, which provides a Stamina buff exclusive with
Power Word: Fortitude.
Train up this profession and turn most of your cloth into bandages to keep it leveled.
Fishing - Possibly the most chill of the professions, fishing allows you to equip a fishing pole and then cast a line in almost any body of liquid. Many fish can be used in
Cooking, and this is generally a gathering profession that you can use while you wait for boats. The most popular fish recipe is probably the
Savory Deviate Delight, which can turn you into a ninja.
My Recommendation
Start with
Skinning in your starting zone and skin everything you can. This will give you a lot of Ruined Leather Scraps, which are great for early
Leatherworking levels. Once you get to your main city, train in
Leatherworking and craft the gear I mentioned above. After that, make a bunch of Camp Tents and then mostly ignore Leatherworking until your 50s, when it may become worth leveling again for strong endgame bind-on-pickup items. Otherwise, consider dropping Leatherworking for Mining for more gold income once you hit level 60.
