Protection Warrior Guide - Leveling & Endgame

Overview

Hey guys, KallTorak here! This is my Protection Warrior guide for leveling & end game.

Warrior has always been the go-to tank in Classic, but deep Protection was never a popular spec for leveling or end game. In WoW: Forever, Blizzard made massive improvements to Protection, making it a strong end game tank and a very viable leveling spec.

You can level 1 to 60 with a one-hander and shield the entire time, with no gold spent on respecs. Better rage generation, improved leveling itemization, buffs to Revenge, the new Victory Rush and big talent changes all make this playstyle feel great. The moment you unlock Shield Block at level 16 you feel like an unkillable monster while still doing great damage.

For those that really love the one-hander and shield archetype, Protection Warrior is it.

Protection Warrior Content: Leveling 1 to 60 Guide, Race Selection Guide, My Regen Troll Warrior Guide

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Incredibly tanky once you unlock Shield Block at level 16
  • Victory Rush and Shield Block let you chain pull with very little downtime
  • Solid multi-target with Thunder Clap, Revenge and Cleave.
  • Level 1 to 60 with a one-hander and shield, no gold respecs needed
  • Every race can play Warrior, so play whatever you like
  • Slow start before Shield Block at level 16
  • Low rage and limited AoE in the early levels
  • Less raw damage than a two-handed Arms or Fury Warrior while leveling
  • One of the higher APM classes in the game. For me this is a positive but for new players be mindful you will be pushing buttons.

Guide Variants

Follow this guide and we are playing one-hand and shield for our entire journey with no gold respecs. One-hand and shield feels a lot better now in the early levels. Protection starts feeling amazing when you get Shield Block at level 16, and once you have it you will feel the power of the Protection talents with each level.

Talent Order

  • Level 10-14 - Shield Specialization
  • Level 15-17 - Improved Revenge
  • Level 18-19 - Improved Thunder Clap
  • Level 20 - Last Stand
  • Level 21-22 - Master of Defense
Level 23 - Improved Thunder Clap
  • Level 24 - Improved Bloodrage
  • Level 25 - Vanguard
  • Level 26 - Improved Bloodrage
  • Level 27-29 - Improved Sunder Armor
  • Level 30 - Concussion Blow

Talent Notes

  • Shield Specialization - Increasing our block chance is massive, but the big win here is getting 5 rage when you block. When our block chance is high this generates lots of rage passively, and from very early on it generates good rage through Shield Block.
  • Improved Revenge - Revenge is a large portion of our damage, so improving it is a massive win.
  • Improved Thunder Clap - Nice when tanking dungeons and some AoE pulls.
  • Last Stand - Use this when you are about to die! The 3 minute cooldown change is big. If you die with this off cooldown you made a mistake.
  • Master of Defense - With better gear we start to dodge and parry a lot. With multiple enemies on you this should net you plenty of extra rage.
  • Improved Bloodrage - Makes dungeon rage management easier, especially once we start spamming Cleave. Can use this between pulls to sustain rage as well.
  • Vanguard - Charge in Defensive Stance if you want to sit in Defensive Stance forever.
  • Improved Sunder Armor - Cheaper Sunders means more threat on every target.
  • Concussion Blow - Good utility and it can save your life. You can skip it for Bastion if you want.

Gameplay & Rotation

Single Target Rotation

  1. Maintain Battle Shout
  2. Charge to open the pull
  3. Shield Block on cooldown
  4. Revenge whenever it's available
  5. Victory Rush if it will heal you
  6. Demoralizing Shout if it isn't on the target
  7. Sunder Armor until the target has 5 stacks
  8. Thunder Clap if it isn't on the target
  9. Heroic Strike with extra rage

AoE Rotation

  1. Maintain Battle Shout
  2. Charge into the pack
  3. Thunder Clap on cooldown
  4. Demoralizing Shout so the whole pack hits softer
  5. Shield Block on cooldown
  6. Revenge on your main target
  7. Sunder Armor to help sustain threat on multiple mobs
  8. Retaliation on big pulls
  9. Cleave with extra rage

Levels 1-16

Early on you have limited rage, so open with Charge and spend your rage on Heroic Strike. Once you get Defensive Stance at level 10, Charge in from Battle Stance and swap to Defensive Stance, then use Revenge once you train it at 14. Use Hamstring on runners and Shield Bash to interrupt spells.

Defensive Cooldowns

  • Last Stand (talent at 20) - Only a 3 minute cooldown now, so don't die with it off cooldown.
  • Intimidating Shout (22) and Concussion Blow (30) - Buy space to bandage or reset a bad pull.
  • Shield Wall (28) - Huge damage reduction for emergencies.
  • Disarm (18) - Can reduce the damage you are taking heavily depending on the enemy.

Gear

When leveling use the highest DPS weapon you have access to! With normalized rage, weapon speed and type are not nearly as important as they used to be. With racial changes it doesn't matter if it's a dagger, sword, axe or mace, or if it's fast or slow. Prioritize weapon DPS. At level 60 there is more nuance to weapon speed, but for leveling just take the highest DPS weapon. Your weapon is the most important item a Warrior has, so don't be afraid to buy weapons off the auction house or go out of your way for quest chains and dungeons that give strong weapons.

For armor, wear the highest armor pieces with Strength and Stamina, and grab a new shield whenever you find one with more armor.

Weapons to look for - Alliance

  • Copper Shortsword (Level 4) - Crafted with Blacksmithing, or buy it on the auction house
  • Thick War Axe (Level 12) - Crafted with Blacksmithing, or buy it on the auction house
  • Cookie's Tenderizer (Level 16) - Deadmines, drops from Captain Cookie
  • Thief's Blade (Level 17) - Deadmines, drops from Mr. Smite
  • Smite's Reaver (Level 17) - Deadmines, drops from Mr. Smite
  • Buzz Saw (Level 18) - Deadmines, drops from Sneed's Shredder
  • Cruel Barb (Level 19) - Deadmines, drops from Edwin VanCleef
  • Subdued Dragon's Fang (Level 28) - Wetlands quest "Stopping the Cycle"

Weapons to look for - Horde

Horde can also run Deadmines for the Alliance weapons above, and you probably want to do it while leveling for the legacy point.

  • Copper Shortsword (Level 4) - Crafted with Blacksmithing, or buy it on the auction house
  • Thick War Axe (Level 12) - Crafted with Blacksmithing, or buy it on the auction house
  • Hammer of Orgrimmar - "Hidden Enemies" quest from Thrall in Orgrimmar (Ragefire Chasm)
  • Wingblade - "Leaders of the Fang" quest from Nara Wildmane in Thunder Bluff (Wailing Caverns)
  • Outlaw Sabre - "Baron Aquanis" quest, started by the Strange Water Globe that drops from Baron Aquanis in Blackfathom Deeps (VERY GOOD, SHOULD GET)

Level Walkthrough

  • You start with Heroic Strike, Battle Shout and Battle Stance.
  • Level 4 - Charge and Rend. Level 6 - Thunder Clap. Level 8 - Hamstring.
  • Level 10 - Do your Defensive Stance class quest, and train Bloodrage, Sunder Armor and Taunt. Your first talent point goes into Shield Specialization.
  • Warriors can learn every weapon type. Visit the Weapon Masters in the capital cities as you pass through them.

Stat Priority

Leveling Priority

  1. Weapon DPS - By far the most important stat while leveling. Upgrade your weapon every chance you get.
  2. Strength - Attack power means more damage and more threat.
  3. Stamina - More health means safer chain pulls and fewer deaths.
  4. Agility - A little crit, dodge and armor.
  5. Armor and Block - Higher armor shields make you tankier, and after level 40 Block Value also boosts Shield Slam.

Intellect does nothing for a Protection Warrior outside of letting you level weapon skill faster. Spirit is also pretty useless, unless you are playing a Regen Troll spirit stacking build or using an out of combat regen set while leveling.

Level 60 Tanking

Stamina, Defense and avoidance keep you alive, Hit and Strength help your threat, Agility helps both, and Block Value powers Shield Slam. This section will be updated once we have real level 60 data.

Consumables

Consumables are not required, but they make leveling and tanking much smoother.

Experience Food - New in WoW: Forever, cooked food gives a 5% experience buff from kills on top of its Well Fed stat. Keep a food buff up at all times and stick to Strength or Stamina food:

  • Level 1+ - Beer Basted Boar Ribs (+1 Strength) or Herb Baked Egg (+1 Stamina)
  • Level 5+ - Goretusk Liver Pie or Big Bear Steak (+3 Strength), Carrion Surprise (+3 Stamina)
  • Level 15+ - Lean Venison or Succulent Pork Ribs (+5 Strength), Soothing Turtle Bisque or Gooey Spider Cake (+5 Stamina)
  • Level 25+ - Heavy Kodo Stew or Giant Clam Scorcho (+10 Stamina)
  • Level 35+ - Monster Omelet or Spider Sausage (+15 Stamina), Plated Armorfish (+150 Armor) for tanking dungeons
  • Level 45+ - Smoked Desert Dumplings (+20 Strength) or Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops (+25 Stamina)

Bandages - Use bandages constantly while leveling, not just as a last second heal. Max First Aid to 300 as you level, starting with Linen Bandage. See Tips & Tricks for bandage techs.

Healing Potions - Search "Healing Potion" on the auction house and buy whatever is cheapest at your level, from Minor Healing Potion up to Healing Potion and beyond. Lower level potions are fine to use often if they are cheap.

Elixirs

  • Strength elixirs (Elixir of Minor Strength, Elixir of Strength, Elixir of Ogre Strength and Elixir of Greater Strength) for damage and threat. Use the strongest one your level allows.
  • Defense elixirs (Elixir of Minor Defense, then Elixir of Lesser Defense, Elixir of Defense and Elixir of Greater Defense) for tanking dungeons.
  • Troll's Blood Elixir for health regeneration while chain pulling.

Weapon Buffs - Sharpening Stones (like Coarse Sharpening Stone) for bladed weapons and Weightstones (like Coarse Weightstone) for maces. Blacksmithing crafters can make them, or buy them on the auction house.

Explosives - Iron Grenade and Coarse Dynamite from Engineering are great for AoE threat and emergencies.

Professions

  • Blacksmithing - Blacksmiths might be able to craft very good gear in late game, plus things like Sharpening Stones that are nice when leveling. For leveling you can buy anything from Blacksmithing off the auction house, so it's by no means required.
  • Mining - Your main way of farming materials for Blacksmithing or Engineering. Arcane Crystal is also a fantastic late game gold farm for Warrior.
  • Engineering - Great for leveling and late game. Target Dummy, Iron Grenade and Coarse Dynamite make leveling easier, and Goblin Sapper Charge is awesome for snap AoE threat. Spirit stacking Trolls can craft Bright-Eye Goggles.
  • First Aid - People seriously underestimate it. Just because you can't bandage while taking damage doesn't mean there aren't plenty of chances to get bandages off.
  • Cooking - Most food can be bought on the auction house, but you should have a food buff at all times because it gives you an experience buff.

Playable Races

Warrior is unique in this game in the fact that every race can play it! If you are a fan of a specific race, do not feel pressured by the meta. Play whatever your heart desires. For those interested in the meta, here is a breakdown of what each race brings. If you are not sure, check out my video on What Race is the Best for You!

Horde

Orc

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Blood Fury

Increases Attack Power and Spell Power by 10% for 15 sec. 2 min cooldown.

Good threat boost on pull. No longer reduces your healing received, so it's not a bust for tanking. Pairs well with Recklessness.

Shatter Curse

Removes all Curses and Banes and reduces Magic damage taken by 5% for 8 sec. 3 min cooldown.

Situationally good in PvE, but when it's good it's really nice in raids, especially on magic damage bosses.

Hardiness

Passive. Stuns on you last 20% shorter.

Really good in PvP and situationally good in PvE.

Command

Passive. Hunter and Warlock pets deal 5% more damage.

Does nothing for Warrior.

Undead

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Touch of the Grave

Passive. Your attacks have a 20% chance to drain Health from the target, up to 5% of your maximum Health.

Very strong racial. Consistent DPS increase, it does threat, and it heals you. Very good for solo farming and it scales naturally with your best in slot gear.

Cannibalize

Eat a nearby Humanoid or Undead corpse to regenerate 7% Health every 2 sec for 10 sec. Moving, acting or taking damage cancels it. 2 min cooldown.

Really good for questing so you can chain pull more often, especially combined with Touch of the Grave.

Will of the Forsaken

Removes all Charm, Fear and Sleep effects. 2 min cooldown.

Situationally good in PvE when tanking and still very good in PvP.

Underwater Breathing

Passive. Your breath lasts 300% longer underwater.

Nice quality of life for underwater quests.

Tauren

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Endurance

Passive. Total Health increased by 5%.

5% health is solid. Scales Gore Drinker if you end up playing Fury Prot.

War Stomp

Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yards for 2 sec. 1.5 min cooldown.

Good when leveling and in dungeons.

Plainsrunning

Passive. Gain 2% movement speed every 5 sec you keep moving, up to 60%. Taking damage or standing still reduces it.

Good when leveling, but loses value once you get mounts or start doing instances.

Cultivation

Grow a duplicate of a nearby herb that you can harvest without Herbalism. 15 min cooldown.

Free herbs for consumables while you quest.

Troll

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Berserking

Increases attack and casting speed by 10% for 15 sec. 3 min cooldown.

Great for threat on pull. More attack speed is more rage is more threat! Pairs well with Recklessness.

Regeneration

Passive. Health regeneration increased by 20%, and 20% of it continues in combat.

Very solid when leveling but falls off in late game, unless you play spirit stacking. Check out my Regen Troll Warrior Guide for the full spirit stacking build.

Rapid Regeneration

Regenerate 50% of your maximum Health over 6 sec. Moving, acting or taking damage cancels it. 3 min cooldown.

Really good while leveling between pulls. Can be good in farms if you can create space.

Beast Slaying

Passive. 5% more damage against Beasts.

Situationally good, most of the time it's nothing.

Skyborne (Windshaper)

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Skysight

Increases movement and mounted speed by 15%. Used at an elemental convergence, you become Charged for 1 hour and the bonus doubles to 30%. 2 min cooldown.

Better than the Alliance version. 30% movement speed is insane when you are Charged, and 15% in raids will be great too. Movespeed is king!

Wind Blessed

Passive. Haste increased by 2%.

2% haste is pretty insane, since haste is great with rage normalization. There's a chance Skyborne end up the great for dps.

Walk on Air

Glide downward through the air for 10 sec, steering as you go. 1.5 min cooldown.

Possibly the coolest leveling skill in the game for open world travel.

Elemental Insight

Passive. 5% more damage against Elementals.

Useless most of the time, but good when it's good.

Alliance

Night Elf

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Quickness

Passive. Dodge chance increased by 1% and movement speed by 2%.

Great for Protection, and Master of Defense gives us rage when we dodge.

Elune's Light

Increases critical strike chance by 10% for 15 sec. 3 min cooldown.

Pop it on pull for threat, but avoid using it with Recklessness.

Shadowmeld

Stealth while standing still. Cancels when you move.

Not helpful for tanking, but nice for hiding when you need to AFK while questing.

Wisp Spirit

Passive. You become a wisp when you die, with 75% more movement speed.

Faster corpse runs.

Dwarf

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Stoneform

Removes and grants immunity to Bleed, Poison and Disease effects, and reduces Physical damage taken by 10% for 8 sec. 3 min cooldown.

Great defensive for big physical burst, and the immunity is very handy in dungeons.

Artisan's Precision

Passive. Hit chance with spells and attacks increased by 1%.

Good early on, but loses value once hit becomes abundant.

Big Game Hunter

Passive. 5% more damage against Beasts.

Weak most of the time.

Find Treasure

Shows nearby treasure on your minimap. Lasts until cancelled.

Handy for spotting chests while questing.

Gnome

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Eureka!

For 8 sec, your non-periodic damaging abilities cost 10% less Rage and deal 10% more damage. 2 min cooldown.

Solid with cooldowns or on pull for threat.

Escape Artist

Escape any movement impairing effect and become immune to them for 3 sec. 2 min cooldown.

Possibly the best PvP racial. Semi useful in PvE.

Expansive Mind

Passive. Maximum Rage increased by 5%.

Very unlikely we ever hit 105 rage as Protection.

Engineering Specialization

Passive. Engineering devices fail or backfire 20% less often.

Only matters if you are an Engineer.

Human

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Ruthless

Passive. Critical strike chance increased by 1%.

Consistent damage and threat, though on-use abilities are generally better for tanking.

Will to Survive

Removes all Stun effects. 3 min cooldown.

Depends on which raid encounters it works on. Great in PvP depending on the matchup.

The Human Spirit

Passive. Spirit increased by 10%.

Spirit is useless for Warrior. Play Troll if you want spirit builds.

Perception

Greatly increases stealth detection for 20 sec. 3 min cooldown.

Situational, mostly for spotting Rogues and Druids in PvP.

Skyborne (High Order)

Racial

What It Does

My Thoughts

Wind Blessed

Passive. Haste increased by 2%.

2% haste, possibly the best DPS racial long term.

Walk on Air

Glide downward through the air for 10 sec, steering as you go. 1.5 min cooldown.

Makes open world travel and questing feel amazing.

Read Leyline

Increases Health and Mana regeneration by 50% for 15 sec. Used at a leyline, you become Attuned for 1 hour and the bonus doubles to 100%. 2 min cooldown.

Probably pointless in raids, but good for questing.

Elemental Insight

Passive. 5% more damage against Elementals.

Useless most of the time, but good when it's good.

Tips & Tricks

Treat leveling like the tutorial for your end game! Your goal while leveling is learning the mechanics of Protection Warrior. The game slowly rolls out your skills and dungeons introduce new mechanics, so 1 to 60 is your practice run for becoming a good tank. I recommend doing each dungeon once on your journey.

Use Demoralizing Shout EVERY SINGLE PULL. Warrior is all about uptime. Chain pull, avoid eating if possible, and fight as many enemies in a row as you can. Demoralizing Shout is more important than most warriors realize. Depending on the enemy you take anywhere from 15% to 35% less damage, which lets you pull several more enemies without stopping.

Turn on nameplates, mark targets and use a threat meter. Tanking means leading the group, controlling the pace and, most importantly, controlling threat. Press Control + V to turn on enemy health bars, which also show when someone pulls aggro off you. A threat addon like Forever Threat shows how far ahead on threat you are, so you know when to send a few more Sunder Armor stacks onto a target. Put a Skull marker on a hotkey and mark a kill target every pull.

Use First Aid and bandages non stop. Don't save bandages as a last second heal. Use them on cooldown to keep chain pulling. After a kill, Bloodrage so your rage doesn't fall off and bandage to full. In combat, use Concussion Blow or Intimidating Shout to buy space for a bandage. Aim to max First Aid to 300 while leveling.

Hamstring will save your life. Lots of enemies have no ranged attacks, so kiting with Hamstring creates space to bandage or reset the fight. If you are about to die, Hamstring and run.

Use the highest DPS weapon you have. With normalized rage, weapon DPS matters far more than speed or type. See the Gear section for weapons to look out for.

Stances, Shouts & Cooldowns

A quick reference for the stances, shouts and cooldowns you'll use as a Protection Warrior.

Stance

Key abilities

When to use

Battle Stance

Charge, Hamstring, Overpower, Mocking Blow, Retaliation

Opening pulls (until Vanguard at 25) and emergency taunts

Defensive Stance

Revenge, Shield Block, Taunt, Disarm, Shield Wall

Where you live. 95% of the time as Protection

Berserker Stance

Intercept, Whirlwind, Berserker Rage, Recklessness, Pummel

Fear breaks, interrupts and dpsing in off tank scenarios.

Shout

What it does

When to use

Battle Shout

Raises party attack power. Lasts 3 min in WoW: Forever

Keep it up at all times

Demoralizing Shout

Lowers enemy attack power. Lasts 45 sec and is 40% stronger in WoW: Forever

EVERY SINGLE PULL

Challenging Shout

Taunts every enemy near you

When a pack runs at your healer or mage.

Intimidating Shout

Fears nearby enemies

Buy space to bandage or reset a bad pull. Never in dungeons until you know what you are doing with it.

Piercing Howl

Dazes enemies within 10 yards (Fury talent)

Stop runners and kite packs

Cooldown

What it does

When to use

Shield Block

Guaranteed blocks for 7 sec

On cooldown. It powers Revenge and your rage

Last Stand

Temporary extra health, 3 min cooldown

When you're about to die. Don't die with it off cooldown

Shield Wall

Huge damage reduction for 12 sec, 15 min cooldown

Big pulls and dangerous bosses

Retaliation

Strikes back at melee attackers, 15 min cooldown

Big pulls for extra threat

Recklessness

Big crit boost but you take more damage

Threat on pull when the damage is safe or in execute phase as an offtank.

Bloodrage

Instant rage for some health

On cooldown and between pulls to keep rage

Victory Rush

Heal and damage after a kill, 30 sec cooldown

After every kill while chain pulling as long as you have taken some damage. Ideally under 90% life.

Concussion Blow

Stuns the target for 5 sec (talent)

Interrupt casters and buy time to bandage. Can also stun some dungeon bosses when you need to buy time for heals.

Macros

Start attack macros are built into the client now, so you no longer need them.

Stance Swap Macros - These swap to the right stance and use the ability in one button.

WoW Forever Changes

WoW: Forever changes that matter for Protection Warrior:

  • Victory Rush - Now trained at level 20 with a 30 sec cooldown. A heal after every kill that lets you chain pull.
  • Normalized rage - Weapon speed and type barely matter anymore. Weapon DPS is king.
  • Revenge - Buffed numbers. It's a big part of our damage and threat.
  • Shield Block - Lasts 7 sec instead of 5 and is twice as strong.
  • Demoralizing Shout - Lasts 45 sec instead of 30 and is 40% stronger.
  • Thunder Clap - Double the damage on a 6 sec cooldown.
  • Sunder Armor - Now generates extra threat.
  • Taunt - 8 sec cooldown instead of 10.
  • Shield Wall - 15 min cooldown and lasts 12 sec. Retaliation - 15 min cooldown.
  • Last Stand - Only a 3 min cooldown.
  • Battle Shout - Lasts 3 min but is 40% weaker.
  • New trainer abilities - Tactical Mastery at 14 and Slam at 20. Berserker Rage is now trained at 30.
  • Talent changes - Shield Specialization gives 5 rage when you block, Master of Defense gives rage when you dodge or parry, Vanguard lets you Charge in Defensive Stance, Bastion gives 10% damage with a shield, and Focused Rage makes offensive abilities cheaper.
  • Bloodthirst - Reworked numbers and now lasts 10 sec.
