Disclaimer: This guide is based on the WoW Forever beta, which only went up to level 30. Talents, numbers and XP rates can still change before launch on November 4. I’ll keep it updated as we learn more on live servers.
Protection Paladin Leveling: 1–30
Protection Paladin is shaping up to be a great tank in Forever, for dungeons and for the raids to come. It brings something no other tank has: strong AoE tanking and real defensive tools in one kit.
Seal of Fury keeps a shield on you with every swing.
Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to your full health. Prot Paladin never had a cooldown like this in Classic or TBC.
Judgement is now a taunt with 10-yard range, and Swift Judgement resets it whenever you need a second one.
Holy Shield means more blocks, so less damage, very often.
Let me be straight with you about leveling, though: Prot is not the fastest way to level a Paladin. Ret is.
Forever cut dungeon XP hard. Mob kills inside dungeons give much less, and dungeon quests had their bonus halved during the beta. You won’t be chain-running dungeons to 60 like in Classic. You’ll be out in the world, questing solo, and Ret simply kills single targets faster.
Why level as Prot?
Only if you want to take your time. Level Prot if you enjoy the spec for what it is and want to get comfortable with tanking before it matters.
For solo leveling, it’s not the spec I’d suggest. And you don’t need it for early dungeons either: Ret can tank them fine. Mana will be your only real problem there.
My plan for leveling a Paladin in Forever
- 1–39: level as Ret. Pick Prot only if you want to learn tanking from day one.
- 40: Dual Specialization unlocks. It may be costly, so save at least 10g by level 40. Then set Prot as your second spec and swap whenever a dungeon quest needs a tank. If you can’t afford it yet, respec to Prot at your class trainer when you start doing dungeons at higher levels.
- 55–60: go full Prot. You’ll be running dungeons for pre-BiS gear anyway, and the XP comes with it.
Unkillable, not fast. Blocks, absorbs and self-heals mean you rarely die. You’ll still be slower than Ret on lone mobs.
Kill more than one at a time. Consecration lets you pull a small pack and take them all down together, instead of fighting one mob at a time.
Mana is the real boss. Early on, drinking is what slows you down. It starts getting better at 20 with Improved Seal of Fury, and by 23, with Shield Specialization, it’s rarely a problem.
