Eventide Petals
The entire build revolves around the
Eventide Petals Amulet and the
Midnight Zenith Skill that it grants. Understanding this as well as the function of Ice Crystals will inform the damage scaling of the entire build.
With
Midnight Zenith from the Amulet, as we get kills from Critical Hits on Monsters, or Crits against Rare and Unique enemies, we generate Arctic Petals. Once we reach 10 Arctic Petals, 5 Ice Crystals will be created, up to a Maximum of 10 and these Ice Crystals can be destroyed to deal damage in an area around the monsters.
There is another interesting interaction with Ice Crystals: other Skills that consume Freeze will instantly shatter Ice Crystals causing them to deal more Damage in a larger Area.
This informs the first layer of Damage Scaling of the build
- We need to be dealing Critical Hits as often as possible with other Skills
- We need to find a way to automatically consume Freeze to explode our Crystals
- Crystal Life doesn't matter because we aren't destroying them with hits, we are shattering them by consuming Freeze. For this reason, the final modifier on
Eventide Petals doesn't matter
This means that there are two aspects of this build that need to be accounted for: Generating Crits and Scaling Ice Crystal Damage
Critical Hit Chance and Damage Scaling
- Critical Hit Chance and Bonus on the Passive Skill Tree
- Our Quarterstaff Critical Hit Chance is very important, making a modifier like "+3.5% to Critical Hit Chance" very important, and using a
Sinister Quarterstaff with a base 12% Crit Chance is ideal - With
Way of the Stonefist, the modifier +#% increased Critical Damage Bonus is converted into base Crit, which is then multiplied by all #% increases to Critical Hit Chance we get elsewhere
Shattering Palm is a great Skill that not only adds to the explosive feeling of the build, but adding Quality to it grants it More Critical Hit Chance, allowing it to Crit very easily. With Way of the Stonefist, the modifier "+# level of All Melee Skills" is converted to +#% to Quality of All Gems, further improving this and our other Skills- Support Gems such as Pinpoint Critical can be used on supplementary Skills such as
Herald of Ice and
Herald of Thunder to massively boost their Critical Hit Chance and get it up to 100% quite easily. - The Bells generated from
Hollow Focus causes Ethereal Bells to generate around us. All hits against these Bells will be counted as Critical Hits - With
Hollow Resonance, a magical Bell will be attached to our back that will ring out with a Shockwave every time we deal a Critical Hit
Ice Crystal Damage Scaling
- Ice Crystals WILL NOT benefit from the damage on our Quarterstaff, or from any "Adds # to # damage to Attacks". It also will not benefit from "#% increased Critical Damage Bonus for Attacks"
- Ice Crystal Damage does not benefit from the amount of Life they have - this only matters for players using Verglas Support (higher Life wanted), or if you aren't triggering the Shatter by consuming Freeze (lower Life wanted).
Ice Crystal Damage will benefit from
- Generic #% increased Cold Damage, found on Rings and as a Desecrated Modifier on Quarterstaves
- Generic #% Damage gained as Extra (not specifically to Attacks)
- Generic #% increased Critical Hit Chance and Bonus
- Being Consumed by Skills that Consume Freezes
- Gem Levels on
Midnight Zenith
Consuming Ice Crystals
By Consuming Freeze, Ice Crystals will instantly Shatter and deal more Damage in a larger Area. If we weren't to do this, we'd run into the Limit of 10 Ice Crystals and older instances would disappear, and we'd also need to damage them enough in order to shatter them.
Instead what we can do is use a Support like Biting Frost II on our
Herald of Ice and
Herald of Thunder to consume Freezes, Shattering the Ice Crystals, but also "making space" for more to be created and shattered before the limit of 10 is reached. Some players might opt for
Thunderfist which with
Way of the Stonefist adds the Skill
Gelid Palm which destroys Ice Crystals, but this means losing our precious Glove slot
Other Damage Scaling
Our other Damage matters too - we need to deal enough damage with
Shattering Palm to shatter the Shards it creates on enemies and need to ensure that it is always dealing Crits to general Arctic Petals to general Ice Crystals. For this reason we still care about modifiers such as "Adds # to # Damage to Attacks" on Rings, and flat Damage on our Quarterstaff.
We can also use
Tempest Bell which can be hit by our other Skills to ring out with a damage Shockwave. For bosses, we want as many Bells up as possible and Ancestral Call II often only drops 1. Instead we can use Delayed Gratification to increase the combo cost but allow us to drop one, then two more Bells instantly. We can rapidly generate Combo for this Skill with
Whirling Assault and Practiced Combo as well as
Rune of Culmination in our Gloves
How it All Comes Together
We hit with
Shattering Palm - this Crits, generating Petals and covering enemies in shards of Ice. The Crit from Shattering Palm also causes the Bell on our back from
Hollow Resonance to Ring out which can Crit too, generating more Petals which form Ice Crystals. All of the Cold Damage we're dealing means that killed enemies will Shatter from
Herald of Ice, which consumes Freeze with Biting Frost II, shattering our Ice Crystals while simultaneously Critting, which causes our back Bell and Hollow Resonance Bells to Crit, generating more Petals which generates more Ice Crystals which are shattered when Herald of Ice consumes Freeze which... you get the idea - that's the loop. Tons of Crits, tons of Petals, tons of ice Crystals, infinite shatter chains (while monsters are there to receive them!)
Clear Skill Rotation
- Push
Shattering Palm - Enjoy
(Sometimes you might want to drop a Tempest Bell for a super tanky Rare or for extra burst)
Boss Damage Rotation
- Attack one of the
Hollow Form bells with
Killing Palm to generate a Power Charge, then attack with
Rend to gain 50% of damage as extra Lightning. This can be done before the boss spawns in fully - Open with
Whirling Assault to generate the 10 Combo Required to drop our Bells - Use
Hand of Chayula to apply
Elemental Weakness and
Freezing Mark to the Boss - Drop
Tempest Bell - Attack with
Shattering Palm repeatedly
Often you might not need to use
Rend or
Hand of Chayula, or sometimes not even your
Tempest Bell to take down a Map Boss, making this rotation pretty easy.
Freeze on Bosses
Because of
Heavy Frost on our Passive Tree, we don't want our Freezes to be consumed from Bosses. Luckily, Herald of Ice and Thunder only proc on kill and therefore Biting Frost II won't proc. However, we can still get the shatter loop here: the Shockwaves from our Bell will instantly shatter the Ice Crystals and also Crit along with our
Shattering Palm,
Hollow Resonance and
Hollow Focus to generate more Arctic Petals which generate more Ice Crystals in a loop that melts the boss.
