Abyss is a mechanic in Path of Exile 2 that creates cracks in the earth that spew out monsters. These monsters can be slain for special Omens and Abyss Crafting Currency
Overview
Guide
Abyss can be found starting in Act 2 Mastodon Badlands, where players can also find The Lightless Passage, which is required to complete Abyss Crafts with Desecrations.
Abysses can also be found in Waystones and added to endgame areas with Abyss Precursor Tablets

Example of an Abyss Precursor Tablet. Tablets can be made Rare after defeating the Arbiter
After defeating a certain number of enemies within the Abyss, a final wave will spawn from the main Abyss Pit. Defeating this wave has a chance to spawn an Abyss Chest that can drop Abyssal Currency

Abyss Crafting and Rewards
Special Crafting Bones can be obtained from Abysses that will allow players to Desecrate their items. Desecration adds a hidden modifier to an item which can then be Revealed at the Well of Souls
We have a full guide on all of the Abyss Crafting items and rewards that can be obtained from the mechanic, which can be read here: Abyss Crafting Guide
Abysses can also be used to add a high density of Rare and Magic monsters to a player's map, improving generic rewards in the form of Currency, Unique and Rare item drops.
Abyssal Depths
Occasionally after completing an Abyss, an opening to the Abyssal Depths will open. This area contains several Abyss monsters, Abyssal Chests and at the end a player will have to defeat one to three Rare Abyss enemies to collect three Abyssal Chests. Dying in this area will prevent the player from re-entering, so be careful!
The Chests at the end of the Abyssal Depths can also drop Abyss-exclusive Lineage Support Gems
- Amanamu's Tithe
- Kurgal's Leash
- Tecrod's Revenge
Lightless Void and Dark Domain
Occasionally players will find a special Abyssal Depths leading to the Lightless Void. This is similar to a regular Abyssal Depths, but contains a boss, Tasgul, Swallower of Light, at the end. Players can also find the Dark Domain which is similar but contains Vandroth, Blackblooded Enslaver as a boss.
Each of these Bosses will drop a Kulemac's Invitation, which can be brought to The Lightless Passage to fight the Vessel of Kulemac. Defeating the Vessel of Kulemac will grant players a guaranteed Abyssal Unique item as well as a guaranteed Ancient Bone (Jawbone, Collarbone or Rib)

Abyss Questline
Abyss Questline
In the Endgame of Path of Exile 2, players can head to The Well of Souls on their Atlas (currently to the East of the Ziggurat Refuge) to begin the Abyss Questline. While in this area, players will find a central hub, The Well of Souls, and three outstretched lines of Maps which end of a boss encounter. By completing Maps in this section, players will be granted a single Abyss Atlas Point.
This questline is extremely straightforward and easy to complete and is well worth it to acquire all 35 Abyss Atlas Passive Points. Make sure to turn on Quest Tracking in Options -> UI if you're uncertain what to do next! You can see the list of Atlas Passives in the section below

Abyss Tablets
Abysses can be further juiced in the endgame with Abyss Precursor Tablets, which grant a guaranteed Abyss to the area. Abyss Tablets can have up to 4-modifiers (if you have completed the Arbiter), which increase the difficulty and reward and number of Abysses in the area. By default, Abyss Tablets have 10 Uses Remaining before running out, with one Use consumed per Waystone opened with the Tablet

A full list of Abyss Tablet modifiers can be seen on PoE2db: Abyss Tablet Modifiers
Abyss Interactions
Abyss Interactions
Abyss interacts interestingly with some other league mechanics, namely Rogue Exiles. If a Rogue Exile naturally spawns beside an Abyss, it will respawn as an Abyssal Lichborn version of itself and drop a guaranteed
Heart of the Well Unique Jewel.
An important note: only Rogue Exiles that naturally spawn next to an Abyss will be converted in this way. This means that players cannot drag a Rogue Exile from another area of the Map to an Abyss to force this intereaction
Abyss will also interact with some other mechanics, such as Strongboxes, causing them to convert into Abyssal Troves
