Path of Exile 2 0.3 Rise of the Abyssal introduced several new crafting mechanics to the game, namely new Currency items that can add Desecrated modifiers to items which can be revealed to give players a choice of three modifiers they may want to use. This new Abyss crafting system is extremely powerful and can be used in both the early, mid and endgame to improve items
Abyss Crafting and Desecrated Modifier - Path of Exile 2
Overview
Desecrated Modifiers
Desecrated Modifiers can be added to items you find or craft with Abyssal Bones that you can find by completing Abyss encounters that you find in the Campaign and Maps. These Desecrated Modifiers will remain hidden until you take them to the Well of Souls to Reveal them, where you will be given a choice of one of three modifiers to add to the item.
"Desecrating an item adds an an Unrevealed Desecrated modifier. If modifiers are full, then a random modifier is also removed. These modifiers can be revealed at the Well of Souls. Items with Desecrated Modifiers cannot be Desecrated again"

Revealing a Desecrated Modifier
Items can be Revealed at The Well of Souls, which can be found by travelling to The Mastodon Badlands in Act 2, entering the Lightless Passage and finding the entrance to the Well of Souls.

After speaking to the Lurking Creature for the first time, an icon for the Well of Souls will pop up that can be clicked to Reveal a Desecrated Item. Place your item in the window that opens and hit Reveal to show the choices you have been offered.

After making your decision, click the modifier and hit "Confirm" to add it to the item. After a short animation, the item will be returned to you with the new Desecrated modifier

Abyss Crafting Items - Abyssal Bones
Desecrated Modifiers can be added to an item by using a variety of new Abyss Crafting Currency items known as Abyssal Bones. There are different Abyssal Bone types that function for specific types of items, as well as different Quality types that can affect the outcome of the Revealed Desecrated modifiers

Icon | Name | Desecrates a Rare... |
|---|---|---|
| Jawbone | Weapon or Quiver |
| Rib | Armour (Helmet, Gloves, Boots, Body Armour) |
| Collarbone | Amulet, Ring or Belt |
| Cranium | Jewel |
| Vertebrae | Waystone |
Each of these different Abyssal Bones can be applied to a Rare item of the specific type, but there are also different Qualities of Abyssal Jawbones, Ribs and Collarbones that you will find
- Gnawed: Desecrates a Rare item up to a Maximum Item Level of 64 - these are the types that you will find during the campaign and these cannot be used on higher item level items you find in Maps
- Preserved: Desecrates a Rare item of any Item Level and will grant a random Desecrated Modifier
- Ancient: Desecrates a Rare item, but guarantees a Minimum Modifier Level of 40. These are uncommon, expensive and often used in higher end crafts to guarantee better outcomes of Desecration
Abyssal Bone Functionality
Abyssal Bones will always add a modifier to your item, assuming it isn't Corrupted or Sanctified, but functions differently depending on how many modifiers your item has.
- If your Rare item has 6 modifiers, the Bone will remove a random modifier and then add a Desecrated Prefix or Suffix (if it removes a Prefix, it will add a Prefix, and the same for Suffixes)
- If your Rare item has an empty modifier (fewer than 3 Prefixes and 3 Suffixes), the Desecrated modifier will be added to the item without first removing a modifier
- If your Rare item has an empty Prefix and empty Suffix, the Bone will add either a Desecrated Prefix or Suffix
- If your Rare item has full Suffixes, but an open Prefix, a Desecrated Prefix will be added
- If your rare item has full Prefixes, but an open Suffix, a Desecrated Suffix will be added
This is important to understand as you can improve the odds of getting a desired outcome when using your Abyssal Bone
Desecrated Modifier Pool
The list of Desecrated Modifiers that can be added to your item are the same as the usual modifiers that can be added to an item. For example, if you get a Desecrated Prefix on a pair of Boots, you can Reveal things like #% increased Movement Speed or Maximum Life. A Desecrated Suffix on a Martial Weapon could give you the option to Reveal something like Critical Hit Chance or Attack Speed.
However, there are some special modifiers that can only be found by Revealing Desecrated modifiers. These modifiers have names associated with Abyss Lore and are known as Kurgal, Ulaman and Amanamu modifiers. Some of these modifiers are extremely powerful and sought after
The full list of Abyss modifiers is far too extensive to list here and cannot be seen easily in game but can be seen over on PoE2DB: List of Item Modifiers per Base Type
Understanding the mod pool and basics of itemisation and crafting is important here as it can help inform your decisions with Abyss Crafting.
Abyss Omens
There are a series of new Abyss Omens that affect how Abyssal Bones interact with your item, other Currency and when Revealing modifiers. Each of these Omens can be used to manipulate the crafting process to increase the odds of a desired outcome, remove an undesired outcome, gain more options when Revealing, and more.
Icon | Omen | Function - While this item is active in your inventory |
|---|---|---|
| Omen of Dextral Necromancy |
Useful when you have both an open Prefix and Suffix but want to ensure you get a Desecrated Suffix |
| Omen of Sinistral Necromancy |
Useful when you have both an open Prefix and Suffix but want to ensure you get a Desecrated Suffix |
| Omen of Light |
Useful when the Revealed mod isn't desired and you'd like to remove it before attempting to add a new Desecrated modfiier |
| Omen of Abyssal Echoes |
Allows you a second set of options when Revealing after the first. You can still pick one of the first set of 3 options given |
| Omen of Putrefaction |
|
| Omen of the Blackblooded (Kurgal) |
|
| Omen of the Liege (Amanamu) |
|
| Omen of the Sovereign (Ulaman) |
|
Essence of the Abyss
There is also a new Essence called Essence of the Abyss with a rather unclear function. This Essence will remove a random modifier from your item before adding a "Mark of the Abyss" modifier.
When Desecrating an item with this modifier, the "Mark of the Abyss" modifier will always be removed and replaced with a Desecrated modifier. It seems that the Desecrated modifier added will be of a higher Tier than the removed modifier, but it isn't entirely clear

However, this Essence can still be used in some clever ways to ensure that specific modifiers are removed and replaced.
Further Reading
The best way to learn how to use new systems like this is to either watch other players use them in videos, or test them out for yourself. New systems being added can often feel overwhelming for new players, but never feel like you have to learn everything all at once - by doing small crafts and slowly working your way up, you'll slowly start to learn and internalise all of the systems in the game, one at at time.
