Overview

!UPDATE! With the price of Reaping Staves skyrocketing, you don't necessarily need an Item Level 81 Staff for this, but make sure that it still has Level 20 Reap. I will also suggest some other ideas for reducing the cost of this craft in the steps

This guide will take you through the process of crafting a budget Reap Staff for the Reap Bloodmage Build I am playing. This is an incredibly deterministic and interesting craft, but all steps must be followed carefully to avoid any mistakes in future steps

Materials

What You'll Need

  • 1x Item Level 81 Reaping Staff with "Grants Skill: Level 20 Reap"
  • 1x Orb of Annulment
  • 2x Omen of Homogenising Exaltation
  • 2x Greater Exalted Orbs
  • 1x Omen of the Sovereign
  • 1x Omen of Dextral Exaltation
  • 1x Omen of Sinistral Crystallisation
  • 1x Omen of Greater Exaltation
  • 1x Omen of Abyssal Echoes (Optional)
  • 1x Preserved Jawbone
  • 1x Essence of Perfect Sorcery
  • 1x Essence of Greater Alacrity
  • 1x Perfect Orb of Transmutation
  • 1x Perfect Orb of Augmentation

Budget Reap Staff Craft

Step 1: Buying the Base

You will need to either find or buy an Item Level 81 Reaping Staff with "Grants Skill: Level 20 Reap"

Note: The price of these Staves has skyrocketed since the guide has come out (30-40D for a Normal Rarity i81 Reaping Staff). You can instead buy a Level 20 Reaping Staff, but it doesn't have to be Item Level 81.

Step 2: Two Mod Rare Item

BACKUP PLAN: Normal Rarity Reaping Staves are EXTREMELY expensive now. Here's a backup plan:

  1. You can buy a Magic Reaping Staff with Level 20 Reap, Annul down to 0 modifiers, and then proceed to Step 2.2 where we use the Greater Rune of Alacrity
  2. If Magic Reaping Staves are still too expensive, here's another idea:
  • Buy a Rare Reaping Staff with any Low Weight Mod (High Tier, rarer modifier)
  • Buy any other Staff with a High Weight Mod (Low Tier, common modifier)
  • Recombine the Reaping Staff with the Low Weight Mod with the other Staff with the common modifier. Add in an Omen of Recombination if the chance isn't extremely high (it should be)
  • This should result in a Rare Reaping Staff with two modifiers - the Recombinator tends to pick the item base with the rarer modifier, meaning it's more likely to pick the Reaping Staff if the Recombination is Successful
  • Annul off 1 modifier - you should now have a Rare Reaping Staff with 1 modifier
  • Use Chaos Orbs until you get Tier 1-3 increased Cast Speed - this is a 1 in 47 chance, which is about 1.5 Divines worth of Chaos at time of writing
  • Use an Omen of Sinistral Exaltation, and an Exalted Orb to add a Prefix to the Staff. You should now have Cast Speed and a random Prefix. Continue to Step 3

ORIGINAL METHOD

Step 2.1: Making the item Magic

In the first step of this craft we are aiming to get our Reaping Staff as a Rare item with any Prefix and a Cast Speed Suffix.

First, apply a Perfect Orb of Transmutation to your Normal Rarity Reaping Staff. There are a few possible outcomes here

  • Scenario 1: The modifier that is added is a Prefix. Continue to Step 2.2
  • Scenario 2: The modifier that added is a Suffix that we do not want. Use an Orb of Annulment on the item. You should now have a Magic Reaping Staff with no modifiers and can continue to Step 2.2
  • Scenario 3: The modifier that added is a GOOD Suffix that we do want to keep. These will be discussed in Step 2.3
    • Tier 1 or 2 Cast Speed
    • Tier 1 or 2 Increased Critical Spell Damage Bonus
    • Tier 1 or 2 Increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells
    • +7 to Physical Spell Skills

Step 2.2: Adding Cast Speed

With your Magic Staff with either one Prefix or no Modifiers, apply an Essence of Greater Alacrity. This will add the Suffix Modifier "38-43% increased Cast Speed"

  • If your item has a Prefix, continue to Step 3
  • If your item DOESN'T Have a Prefix, activate an Omen of Sinistral Exaltation, and use an Exalted Orb on the item to add a Prefix

You should now have a Staff with one Prefix and Cast Speed

Step 2.3: You hit a Good Suffix

If you hit one of the good Suffixes that we discussed earlier that want to keep, do the following.

If your item only has the good Suffix, use an Orb of Augmentation to add a Prefix now. If you forget to do this, you can use an Omen of Sinistral Exaltation and Exalted Orb after this step.

  • Tier 1 or 2 Cast Speed: Use an Essence of Greater Seeking to add 70-79% Increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells. You will now have an item with Cast Speed, Spell Critical Hit Chance
  • Tier 1 or 2 Critical Hit Bonus or Critical Hit Chance for Spells: Use an Essence of Greater Alacrity to add 38-43% increased Cast Speed
  • +7 to Physical Spell Skills:
    • If you hit this and your item has a Prefix as well, put it aside for now or list it for Trade. Just make sure to price check it properly, comparing similar item level Reaping Staves, Magic Rarity with that modifier - you might be surprised at how much it is worth.
    • If you hit this and your Magic Staff has just the +7 to Physical Skills and no Prefix, you can either sell it, or apply an Essence of Greater Alacrity and then skip ahead to Step 4

Step 3: Adding the +5 to All Spell Skills

Your item should have one Prefix and Cast Speed at this point.

  • Activate an Omen of Sinistral Crystallisation
  • Use a Perfect Essence of Sorcery on the Staff

This will remove the Prefix and add the +5 Level of All Spell Skills to your Staff

Step 4: Getting a Third Good Suffix

If you hit a good Suffix in Step 2.3 that wasn't +7 to All Physical Spell Skills, you can skip this Step and move on to Step 5. For the rest of us, follow along.

  • Activate an Omen of Homogenising Exaltation
  • Activate an Omen of Dextral Exaltation
  • Apply either a Perfect or Greater Exalted Orb to the item

The Omen of Homogenising Exaltation makes it so that the only modifiers that can be added with an Exalted Orb must be ones that share Tags with existing modifiers on the item. Currently, the only Tags we have are Caster, Speed and Gems. The only Suffixes with these Tags in the mod pool are either Critical Hit Chance for Spells, or Critical Spell Damage Bonus. You will get one of these, and both are great

  • Perfect Exalted Orb: Guarantees you hit Tier 1 or 2 Crit Chance or Crit Bonus
  • Greater Exalted Orb: Guarantees you hit Tier 1, 2 or 3 Crit Chance or Crit Bonus

Step 5: Getting 4-5% Spell Damage per 100 Maximum Life

Your Staff should have 3 Suffixes and no Prefixes

  • Activate an Omen of the Sovereign
  • Apply a Preserved Jawbone to your Staff

The Omen of the Sovereign guarantees that we get an Ulaman Desecrated modifier on our item, and because our Suffixes are full, it has to add a Prefix modifier.

You can now take your Staff to the Well of Souls to Reveal the modifier

Optional: you can use an Omen of Abyssal Echoes to be granted an option to reroll the Modifiers the Well of Souls offers. You are guaranteed to Reveal the 4-5% Spell Damage per 100 Maximum Life, but this means that if you get a 4% roll on the first attempt, you can reroll it to try to get a 5% roll instead

Step 6: Getting the Last Two Prefixes

Your Staff should now have four modifiers, which you can see in the image above, and you should have two empty Prefixes that we will now fill

  • Activate an Omen of Homogenising Exaltation
  • Activate an Omen of Greater Exaltation
  • Apply a Greater or Perfect Exalted Orb to the Staff

The Omen of Homogenising Exaltation again means that we can only add modifiers to the item that share Tags with existing modifiers on the item. Our current tags are: Caster, Speed, Critical, Gem, Damage and Life. There are no Critical, Speed, Gem or Life-tagged Prefixes, so we can only hit Prefix modifiers with the Spell or Damage Tag. The modifiers we can hit are:

  • Gain #% of Damage as Extra Lightning Damage
  • Gain #% of Damage as Extra Cold Damage
  • Gain #% of Damage as Extra Fire Damage
  • #% increased Spell Physical Damage
  • #% increased Spell Damage, # to Maximum Mana (hybrid, dual modifier)

All of these are good options, but the hybrid Spell Damage/Mana modifier is the least sought-after modifier. However, it's still a decent amount of Spell Damage, so it's nothing to complain about.

  • Perfect Exalted Orb: Guarantees you hit Tier 1 or Tier 2 of any of these modifiers
  • Greater Exalted Orb: Guarantees you hit Tier 1, 2 or 3 of the Damage modifiers, or Tiers 1-4 of the Spell Damage/Mana hybrid modifier

Why Can't We Hit #% increased Spell Damage?

But what about #% increased Spell Damage? That looks great an also has the Caster Tag, so why can't we hit it?

The 4-5% increased Spell Damage per 100 Maximum Life modifier and #% increased Spell Damage share a Mod Group - this means that if one of these modifiers exists on the item, the other cannot exist too. This is to prevent items from having too many similar modifiers that could make it too strong, so certain modifiers are mutually exclusive; this is why we cannot hit #% increased Spell Damage

Step 7: Finishing the Staff

All that's left to do is to apply Quality, Sockets and Runes to the item

  • Use ~15-20 Arcanist's Etcher's to the Staff to get it up to 20% Quality
  • Use 2 Artificer's Orbs to add two Sockets to the Staff
  • Add in two Runes of your Choice
    • Greater Iron Rune: 30% increased Spell Damage
    • Greater Vision Rune: 24% increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells
    • Saqawal's Rune of the Sky - Gain 5% of Damage as Extra Damage of All Elements (this is great, but is a bit more expensive than the above ones)

That's it! Your budget Reap Staff is done!
