Build Overview

WARNING: Thorns is very underwhelming until you reach level 36. Start off by grabbing Holy Bolt and Blessed Hammer instead to make your early journey much easier. Here's a Hammerdin Leveling guide you can follow if you'd rather just play that instead of respecing to this build halfway to 70. Below I'll add a Skill Tree for a great a Blessed Hammer build you can play until level 36 if you'd rather stay in the same guide the whole way up.

The Thorns Paladin is great for leveling in Diablo 4. Combining Clash Punishment, Blessed Shield, Defiance Aura, Aegis and Fortress makes you an unstoppable demon killing machine. This build performs well without any specific gear or Legendary Aspects, but finding gear with Strength, Thorns, Cooldown Reduction and Life is ideal.

Level by doing the Lord of Hatred Campaign. Make sure to equip a pet in your wardrobe to help pick up gold and items. Don't forget to hire a Mercenary in "The Den" as soon as possible to start leveling them up and get their benefits.

Oaths

Pick up the Juggernaut Oath when you hit level 15. You generate stacks of Resolve when you attack with your Basic Skill Clash. It's important to be using Clash often to maintain the Thorns buff form Punishment as well as keep up Resolve Stacks to proc Juggernaut. The Aspect of Valiance is a great find early on and should be kept on if you obtain it. You use 2 Valor Skills with this build and it makes Resolve Stack generation effortless.

There are a lot of great Legendary Aspects that you can find to further increase your Damage and Toughness. At the end of the day you can equip whatever is an upgrade and not worry about what Aspects you find.

Thorns damage scales with Strength, so stack Strength everywhere.

Life and Cooldown Reduction are godly since they help with Toughness and let you cast Defiance Aura, Aegis and Fortress more often.

Level 50+ -> Thorns becomes more important - look for high values on gear to Enchant / Temper / Reroll.

Best Offensive Stats:

  • Strength
  • Thorns
  • Cooldown Reduction
  • All Damage
  • Physical Damage
  • Movement Speed

Best Defensive Stats:

  • Life
  • Armor
  • Resistances
  • Life on Kill
  • Life on Hit
  • Damage Reduction

Skill Tree

The Skill Tree is currently being updated with new data from the Lord of Hatred expansion and isn't functioning properly. The leveling path is correct but I'll list out some info below to help.

As mentioned above you need to be level 36 before transitioning into this build. Use the tab above to see the leveling path for a Blessed Hammer Arbiter of Justice build you can play from levels 1-36.

  • Clash & Punishment to get Thorns on your character.
  • Grab Blessed Shield with Shield of Retribution. This is your primary source of damage. Max out Blessed Shield as a priority.
  • Get Defiance Aura and Rite of Thorns. This gives you a boost to your Thorns and does huge AOE damage.
  • Rally & Aegis are the next two unlocks. Take their supporting Skills Words of Rejuvenation and Impunity.
  • Finally get Fortress with Rampart of Thorns once available so you can decimate Bosses. Put points into Defiance Aura once you've finished Blessed Shield as you wait for Fortress to become available.

Once you have obtained all your Skills and their supporting Passives you finish maxing them, the order for maxing Skills should be: Defiance Aura > Blessed Shield > Clash > Aegis > Fortress.

Other Considerations

If you're having trouble surviving you can drop Rally and pick up Consecration with Hallowed Ground. This is going to make you slower and lose out on the Faith Generation, but applies Weaken to enemies and provides more Healing and Damage Reduction. If you make this change, look out for the Aspect of Utmost Glory to gain a huge DPS increase to Weakened enemies.

Mercenary

Subo is hard to beat since he gives you a Map Hack, Movement Speed and Vulnerability.

Aldkin is your Reinforcement because Fields of Languish gives you 20% Damage Reduction when standing in the purple cloud it creates. You have to level with him a bit to unlock this skill - until then use Haunt.

How it Plays

Use Clash at least every 6 seconds to keep up Punishment. It's helpful to cast it more often to generate stacks of Resolve.

Blessed Shield is your primary damage source. Use this often and spam them on Elites and bosses

Defiance Aura is a giant AOE blast for 500% of your Thorns damage. Whenever there's a bunch of monsters around blast them with this nuke.

Aegis gives you Block Chance and 40% increased Thorns & Retribution Chance. Retribution pulses your Thorns Damage whenever you Block.

Rally is a Movement Speed buff and gives Faith Generation. Use Rally to quickly restore you Faith to keep spamming Blessed Shield as you go.

Fortress is your Boss Destroyer and defensive powerhouse. This skill can also be used outside of Boss fights to prevent death since it makes you immune to damage and clears trash mobs and Elites almost instantly.

How it Works

This build scales Thorns damage to make Blessed Shield, Defiance Aura and Fortress do insane damage.

Retribution gives you a chance to explode with AOE Thorns Damage when you Block an attack. Since Aegis gives you increased chance to block on use, you'll be detonating this often.
