Build Overview

The Retribution Thorns Paladin Build Guide teaches you about Gear, Skills, Paragon, Playstyle & Seasonal Mechanics in Diablo 4 Season 12.

Retaliate with Retribution! Throw Shields at your enemies that deal devastating damage. This build is super easy to pick up and has a clear progression. The core of this build is Blessed Shield with the Shield of Retribution upgrade to transform it into a Juggernaut Skill. It then pulses out damage based on your Thorns around it. This build has been greatly buffed for Season 12 and is primed for success.

We use Aegis with Enhanced Aegis, Clash with Enhanced Clash and Defiance Aura with Impunity to greatly increase our Thorns damage.

Core Items and Requirements

  • Ring of Starless Skies is not mandatory but makes it easier to sustain Ahu + Qax it can be replaced with a Ring with Lucky Hit: Chance to Restore Primary Resources.
  • Heir of Perdition is not mandatory but it helps get rid of Cir + Gar and is a lot of damage in general.
  • Mantle of the Grey, Ward of the White Dove and Griswold's Opus all represent massive damage increases that will make us feel much more powerful. They should be found as soon as possible.

To know where to farm all the Uniques you need for the build, make sure to check out the Boss Loot Tables Guide.

Getting multiple great passives on an Amulet can be tricky or expensive. In the Frequently Asked Questions section, you can find a Tier List with all the Affixes you can get on your Amulet.

Elixirs and Incenses

Defensive IncenseScents of the Desert Afternoon
Resistance IncenseSoothing Spices

It's important to run Elixirs and Incenses at all times. Not only because they increase your Experience gain but also because they provide very strong combat boosts.

Ancient Times, Elixir of Iron Barbs and Scents of the Desert Afternoon give us more damage. Soothing Spices makes us tankier.

How it Plays

Starter/Push

  • Use Arbiter of Justice to increase your damage greatly.
  • Use Clash to proc Enhanced Clash often enough as it's your only source of Resolve for Juggernaut.
    • How often will depend on your Resolve Generated per Clash and your Maximum Resolve.
  • Use Aegis to improve your damage through Impunity.
  • Cast Blessed Shield constantly as its your main source of damage.
  • Use Fanaticism Aura and Defiance Aura for their buffs when needed.

Speed

  • Use Arbiter of Justice to increase your damage greatly and enable Argent Veil.
  • Use Falling Star for Mobility.
  • Use Clash to proc Enhanced Clash often enough as it's your only source of Resolve forJuggernaut.
    • How often will depend on your Resolve Generated per Clash and your Maximum Resolve.
  • Alternate between Evade and Blessed Shield as every Evade will cast a free Blessed Shield with Argent Veil.
  • Use Fanaticism Aura and Defiance Aura for their buffs when needed.

Tanky

  • Use Fortress to increase your damage, generate Resolve and gain damage Immunity.
    • Evade when needed to reset its Cooldown.
  • Use Clash to proc Enhanced Clash every 6 seconds.
  • Use Aegis to improve your damage through Impunity.
  • Cast Blessed Shield constantly as its your main source of damage. Alternate a Skill cast after every 3 Blessed Shield to maximize the usage of Ward of the White Dove.
  • Use Fanaticism Aura and Defiance Aura for their buffs when needed.

How it Works

Core Mechanics

Damage

Blessed Shield is a Judicator Core skill that throws a ricocheting shield normally, by using Shield of Retribution, we convert it into a Juggernaut Core Skill that applies our Thorns damage 6 times per throw.

In order to maximize our Thorns damage we use Clash with Enhanced Clash, Aegis with Impunity and Defiance Aura with Rite of Thorns.

Our Ultimate Skill of choice varies depending on our needs:

  • Arbiter of Justice is used because it provides incredible damage multipliers in Aspect of Ascension and Aspect of Celestial Strife. Also, to Speedfarm, Arbiter of Justice is used in combination with Argent Veil and Aspect of the Arbiter's Zephyr to clear much faster than would otherwise be possible by allowing us to cast when we Evade.
  • Fortress is used to make us tankier in combination with Flickerstep, to cast it often enough to basically be Immune to damage.

Juggernaut Explained

An often misunderstood mechanic is Juggernaut. Without Mantle of the Grey, when you get to 8 Resolve it consumes them on your next Juggernaut Skill cast to provide you the benefits of Juggernaut. With Mantle of the Grey this only occurs when you reach your Maximum Resolve. For that reason, it is important to balance your Resolve Generated and Maximum Resolve.

For example, in the Mythic (Speedfarm) Variant, we use Aspect of Valiance and +5 Resolve Generated to get a total of 11 Resolve when we cast Falling Star. We always have a minimum of 1 Resolve because of Juggernaut, meaning that when we cast Falling Star, we can generate up to 12 Maximum Resolve. Therefore, we get +4 Maximum Resolve on our Amulet, getting us from 8 to 12.

Less Maximum Resolve is not too bad, more is because it means you now have to cast either Clash or another Falling Star at an awkward time.

Defenses

Blessed Shield not only has access to the usual Paladin defensive layers (high Armor, Block, Healing) but it also always has Resolve, which gives 20% Damage Reduction.

It's Very Important to try to get one Life on Hit Affix somewhere for sustain.

We also run Cem + Que to be a lot tankier.

Resource Management

We need to run some Runeword with Lum until we have one of the following setups:

  • Ring of Starless Skies + 1x Lucky Hit: Chance to Restore Resources + 1x Faith per Second
  • 2x Faith per Second Affixes + 2x Lucky Hit: Chance to Restore Resources

The best Runewords are:

  1. Bac + Lum on Argent Veil variants.
  2. Igni + Lum
  3. Cem + Lum (better than Bac but better used with Que)
  4. Poc + Lum
  5. Cir + Lum

Runes

Early on, useCir + Gar for Critical Strike Chance, once we get Heir of Perdition we can swap this out.

Cem + Que is used for tankiness on Argent Veil Variants.

Cir or Igni + Thul is used for Vulnerable, CC for Dizzying Blow and [x]15% damage.

Ahu + Qax is used for a disgustingly good damage multiplier.

Early on, we need some kind of Lum runeword to help sustain our Energy despite having access to

The best Offering generators are:

  1. Cem if you have Argent Veil
  2. Igni
  3. Bac (goes to second best with Argent Veil)
  4. Poc
  5. Cir

Why are we taking Rite of Might, how are we generating Resolve?

We generate Resolve with the Courage Passive that is granted to us by Shroud of False Death.

Alternatively, on some builds we generate it more consistently with Clash or Fortress.

Where are we getting Fortified from?

  • To count as being Fortified, any amount of Fortification will do.
  • We boost the Fortified amount with some magic nodes on Preacher.
  • Raheir, your mercenary, also provides a bit of Fortify through his ability.
  • Renewal gives Fortify and is provided by Shroud of False Death for free.
    • If you do not have or use Shroud of False Death, put a point in it when playing in a Party (no access to Raheir Fortify.

How is Mantle of the Grey bugged?

The Juggernaut Skill Ranks count double for Defiance Aura.
