Build Overview

Wattlock Vex!

This build focuses on causing high elemental DoT effects through the loop of shoot-reloading Stelliums, a type of Maliwan Shotgun, and usage of the High Caliber firmware, which lets the Splash hit a second time and apply another DoT.

  • After the fixes, Energy Disc underbarrels on the Stelliums are an even stronger option, especially with Daed-dy O!

The build relies on some specific gear, including purple weapons. Therefore it might be tailored to being something you chase after you already have a nice build going and just feel like doing something fun, yet extremely effective.

This setup was inspired by Girthquake's DOT Shot Amon, check out his builds!

A video guide is also available! For PC players: here's a decrypted save file.

Prismatic Ichor BUGS, AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Prismatic Ichor is a very buggy and inconsistent skill if you don't know how to work around it. Check the Gameplay and Notes section for more details on that and how to handle it while Gearbox hasn't fixed it.

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Very high damage with potential one to two-shots of some bosses
  • Some mechanically involved gameplay to get the maximum worth out of it (consider that a negative if you want)
  • Gear requirements
  • Distant enemies can be a nuisance without backup weapons

Build Variants

Main variant.

You have both action skills available to you. Dead Ringer has a lot more potential due to Coven Crit Chance, but in case you don't like all the setup needed to work around Prismatic Ichor with it, you can just use Phase Phamiliar or Reapers. Either way, you have free reign to swap as needed.

Specters can rob us of our Prismatic Ichor on bossing. The ways to avoid that are detailed in the gameplay section.

  • While Reapers and Trouble can also cause that, it's not at all as frequent.
  • Prismatic Ichor does leave you at the mercy of RNG sometimes - if you get a bad DoT for the type of health bar you're facing, you might need another shot.

Equipment

Weapons

Stelliums, a type of Maliwan Shotgun, are the main weapons of choice here, with the highest DoT values you can find. A Jakobs part is also good, but not absolutely mandatory.

The 'Energy Disc' underbarrel is extremely powerful should you want to use one. It retains Amp, the Primed Potency Maliwan Enhancement (as long as you reload a normal shot before using it), our on-shot boosts and applies DoTs.

All elemental flavors are useful here, but the most general use we'll get on this build variant is out of Corrosive and Shock.

  • Corrosive can generate the best Prismatic Ichor, and deals higher total damage but spread out over a longer duration. It's a safe choice for using either the Main Shot or the Energy Discs.
  • Shock has high burst and DPS potential, however suffers more if the matchup ends up bad or the Prismatic Ichor RNG isn't kind. The main shot does not make great use of its strengths, however the Energy Discs are excellent for it because they apply many strong DOTs in a short time, playing well into the burst and DPS advantages.
  • Fire is a bit of a middle term between the previous two, sort of neither here nor there. The best moments to use it are against health bars that are flesh only.

Vertexes, the other type of Maliwan Shotgun, and the Stelliums, can spawn with the 'Energy Blast' underbarrel. This actually has one of the highest base DoTs available to us, and can trigger a very good Prismatic Ichor. While it won't come close to Energy Discs in DPS, it's still very fun to use.

Sweet Embrace is a pretty nice all-around weapon that can play with the shoot-reload loop for Primed Potency Maliwan Enhancement.

Asher's Rise is a capable weapon, mainly for mobbing.

You can bring any other weapons you like for long range or FFYL backup, like a strong underbarrel, for example.

Repkit

Triple Bypass with Amp is the most solid general choice.

Order Repkit with Amp and Enrage or Elemental Damage is great for bossing.

Ordnance

'Crit Knife' Jakobs Grenade is free damage for bossing.

Slippy is my default choice for helping against Vile Crystal enemies.

Firepot is nice.

Purple Rarity elemental grenades might end up being cool for general use.

  • Keep in mind your grenades can proc dots and rob your Prismatic Ichor. Probably best not to use any elemental grenades on bosses.

Class Mods

Stat rolls to look out for on any class mod:

  • Elemental Damage
  • Status Effect Damage
  • Damage Dealt
  • General Utility

Alchemist Vex Class Mod

+5 Prismatic Ichor; +2 Keen Suffering

General best-in-slot. The high Prismatic Ichor roll is the main thing you should look for.

Avatar Class Mod

+5 Burning Attunement; +1 Radiant Attunement; +1 Leeching Attunement

Nice fallback choice, with its own little gameplay loop. You can swap to a fire weapon after your DOTs are occurring, and the Crit Damage from Burning Attunement will apply to them.

  • You can then, by simply swapping weapons, continue cycling through any other attunement skills you have spec'd through the skill tree or class mod, like Shocking Attunement, Radiant Attunement and Leeching Attunement. This stacks the class mod's special effect/

Four active attunements at once results in an 80% damage boost. When the Crit Damage from Burning Attunement is added to that, it totals 140%. Check out the Vex Damage Formula.

  • Shotgun Equip Speed on Enhancement is a very useful stat for pulling this off.

Shields

Guardian Angel

  • With 150% Amp, this is the primary choice for general use.
  • Any other Amp Shield works here, or even Watts 4 Dinner. They won't be as easy to sustain though.

Protean Cell

  • The Bonus Shock applies to DoTs themselves, making it a really strong choice for quick boss melts, as long as you learn to play around the special effect.

Enhancements

Stat rolls to be on the lookout for are:

  • Gun Damage
  • Gun Type Damage
  • Shotgun and/or Gun Equip Speed (speeds up swaps and mode switches)
  • Gun Status Effect Damage

Primed Potency Maliwan Enhancement is our main choice here. Icon can be nice for mobbing due to the Transfuser effect. Maestro is alright.

Gun Splash and Gun Type Splash are inferior rolls to Gun/Gun Type damage, but they can boost DoTs as long as you hold a splash weapon of the appropriate type.

  • When Gun Splash and Gun Type Splash roll on the same enhancement, they have weird interactions. Meaning you might run into situations where one boost works and the other doesn't, for reasons that are too... extensive to explain here. So mainly avoid that double roll if it happens.

Firmware

Setup 1 (Stellium Shots or Energy Disc; generalist)

3/3 High Caliber; 1/3 Airstrike; 1/3 God Killer

  • High Caliber lets us shoot through enemies and at the ground for a second hit with the splash radius, guaranteeing another DoT application.
  • Airstrike gives us a little more leniency with the piercing shot double hits.
  • God Killer is a flexible choice here, but it's all that's left for DoT damage.

Energy Discs do not receive the piercing from High Caliber, however that's hardly an issue if you want this generalist approach.

Setup 2 (Energy Disc)

If you want to maximize the DoTs from the Energy Discs for bossing, consider:

3/3 Daed-dy O; 2/3 High Caliber

  • Playing around Daed-dy O for the 20% on-shot boost maximizes the DoT damage from Energy Discs.
  • High Caliber adds a further 10% on-shot boost which boosts DoT.

Specialization

Invest any excess points into Killer.

Bullet Train helps with some more impact damage. While that won’t help the dots, it contributes indirectly.

The second pick is The Best Defense, for the overall damage boost. It won’t have super great consistency depending on the shield + class mod combo you wear, but it will do something.

Now With Caffeine is here to help with action skill uptime between areas.

The fourth slot is really up to you:

  • In the Zone's Crit Damage can be used on DoTs by ADSing.
  • One Shot, One Kill has cool mobbing synergy and helps transform excess damage into bigger dots against the bosses of areas like Ripper Drill Sites.
  • Compounding Afflictions can be a decent choice.
  • You can also just run one of the defensive perks.

We don’t need Contamination because our DoTs are guaranteed.

Gameplay

These gameplay tips are here to help you understand the mechanics and loops involved in playing these setups. As noted in the beginning, there's a decent amount of mechanical involvement to this build.

Once you get the basics of how it's working, it'll smooth out.

Unfortunately, a lot of the stress is simply because of us trying to dodge the Prismatic Ichor bug, and also due to the way it hates its own skill tree by letting minions take it from you.

Mobbing

Use Dead Ringer Reapers or Phase Phamiliar.

Grab the adequate-element Stellium for the area.

Proceed to:

  • Spam shoot-reloads to trigger guaranteed dots. Mix in some Repkit usage for Amps and Infusion, especially for the stronger mobs or minibosses.
  • Here you don't need to worry about hitting the High Caliber double hits as much, unless it's a stronger enemy. If your Stellium has a Jakobs-licensed part, you might prefer going for headshots on the weaker mobs.

I do not recommend Protean Cell for mobbing, unless you really want to use a Teen Witch. Even then some things might randomly one-shot you.

While Reapers and Trouble can still rob Prismatic Ichor from Vex, it's at a much, much lower frequency than Specters, which is why I recommend our melee minion friends for mobbing.

Bossing

Pick your shield between Guardian Angel, Protean Cell or any Amp Shield.

  • Grab your Corrosive or Shock Stellium (or the best-fitting element if the boss is a one-type bar) and shoot-reload to prime the DoT, then summon your Specters anywhere they can't hit things and rob your Prismatic Ichor. Spawning them inside the arena but far away from the boss can also work, but less reliably so.

Proceed to:

  • Repkit for Amp and Infusion.
  • (Non-energy disc) Shoot through the boss' hitbox so that you hit it and the ground for a double splash hit that will apply another DoT.
  • (Energy Disc) Shoot near the boss for a splash hit, and then the ricochets should bounce off of the boss and back at it. Direct hits also work.
  • If it survives the DoTs, repeat.

If you use Protean Cell, you'll have to figure out per-encounter when's the best time to fit in a slam to activate it.

  • It may or may not be worth it over the other shield, depending on the fight.

If you just want to use Reapers or Trouble, you can mostly forget all about the steps involving the Specters and just summon them as usual. You'll have no crit chance from Coven though.

Notes

Prismatic Ichor Explained, + Bugs/Anti-synergyPrismatic Ichor Vex

Prismatic Ichor Cooldown is currently bugged and keeps resetting on any new DoT application while its cooldown is running. The ways to avoid this issue are:

  • Apply your DoTs then wait out its cooldown to apply more DoTs
  • Use summons that rarely trigger Prismatic Ichor, like Reapers or Trouble.
  • When using Specters, favor Kinetic Specters or summon them outside the boss arena if it's a quick trip to the boss, otherwise they'll steal your Prismatic Ichor procs.

More than that, the skill itself has design flaws. It's highly anti-synergistic with its own skill tree and action skill, what with the game incentivizing you to element-match your summons then giving you a skill like this which gets all its potential stolen by a small DoT from a Specter. The cooldowns should really be separate between Vex and her summons for this to be smooth, but I don't know if that will ever be the case.

I suspect the intention is for it to be used with Heirloom but uh... yeah, talk about highly restrictive.

Other notes & quirks

The usual "gun/gun type damage" stats, which are part of the on-hit modifiers and accessible through skill tree and class mod stat rolls, do not affect Status Damage in this game.

The "gun/gun type damage" accessible through Enhancement Stat Rolls and some Enhancement Effects, alongside a few select skills, does boost Status Damage by virtue of being applied on-shot. Those are VERY strong and important stat rolls for a status build.

Prismatic Ichor does not benefit from skill damage boosts.

Currently, the Commander class mod cannot seem to drop with more than +3 Infusion points.
