Build Overview

Slash n' Dash is a full green tree Arc Knives build for the true melee enjoyer.

This build does make heavy use of some key specializations, namely Bear Arms and I Am A Gun. Groundbreaker is also incredibly important for bossing, though less necessary for mobbing with Now With Caffeine being used in place of CDR. If you do not have these specializations yet, the build will still work, but some skill choices will be less valuable.

Note:
This build works entirely with just the Esgrimidor class mod, though Buster is an option if you want to speed up your boss kills.

Post-Patch Note: While Groundbreaker has been nerfed, this build feels like it's almost entirely untouched. I honestly am not even sure how, but I only notice a slight dip in time to kill against tougher bosses. This build still functions 100% with no changes necessary.

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Fantastic mobbing.
  • VERY low gear requirements.
  • Easy to use
  • Arc Knives are cool
  • Relies on some key Specializations.
  • Skill rolls on Class Mod can be important.
  • A few bosses are inconsistent or straight up unbeatable.
  • Arc Knives can be a bit annoying to get the hang of.

Some important context to go into our skill choices: we take Bear Arms and I Am A Gun for our specializations. These are incredibly important for some of our best skills within this tree.
Groundbreaker is also taken, which is pretty much solely the reason we can hit some crazy damage on bosses. While Groundbreaker doesn't stack it's damage on melee damage, bonus elements will feed into it. That includes bonus elements that are applied on our melee damage.

Midnight Oil
Up to 50% bonus corrosive damage at tier 1. Incredibly good skill as is, even better when factoring in Groundbreaker stacking.

Dial In & Saldar
Dial In gives us 100% crit damage at max stacks, being not only a great damage boost but of course having direct synergy with Saldar as well as the Esgrimidor class mod.
Saldar doesn't really need more than 1-2 points in it (personally I recommend 2 as a minimum), but there's not really anywhere better to put those two points. Other potential options are to throw them in Blowout or Sustainable Energy.

Diamond Hands
This is our first big Bear Arms and I Am A Gun benefactor. 200% gun damage at max stacks, which through those Specializations gives us 100% melee damage and 100% action skill damage. These stacks only decay when you fire your gun. Given this is a melee build, we never have to do that, meaning we are perpetually benefitting from this skill once stacked. Which happens near instantly. This is probably the single biggest buff we get within this tree. I love Diamond Hands.

Middle Branch

Collaborate Ignition
Decent damage buff. You want to ideally be carrying Maliwans with corrosive, incendiary, and shock firing modes. This is another bonus element, so it'll further feed into Groundbreaker.
Keep the gun in your hands on the element you want, activate Arc Knives, and enjoy your extra bonus element.

Sinergia
This is a very good skill on it's own, even better with Bear Arms and I Am A Gun. On it's own, we already get 120% melee damage at max stacks. But also 60% gun, which our Specializations give us an additional 30% to melee and skill damage. This means we get a total of 150% melee and 30% action skill damage from a 3 point skill.

Artilleria /Booming Business
The slight downside of Sinergia being a 3 point skill is that we still need to move down the tree. This means we have to spend 2 point somewhere within this branch, and there's not any other super great options. However, seeing as Booming Business is actively detrimental due to your ordinances doing self damage, I go for Artilleria.

El Diablito
Another bonus element, though this one also deals Ordnance damage. We deal incendiary damage through Inferno Protocol, so having a constant source of Ordnance damage means that Sinergia gets to constantly be stacked

Right Branch

El Borracho
Damage buff to our corrosive damage. This is going to further buff both Midnight Oil and Altered Cabron.

Empuje
Lets us stay in our action skill even longer. Also effectively buffs Esgrimidor as it makes that 5% even more valuable.

Cruel Accrual
This is another crazy skill and the only one that is able to rival Diamond Hands. At max stacks, Cruel Accrual gives 100% skill damage. But we can also roll more points into this with the Esgrimidor, meaning with 10/5 in Cruel Accrual we can get 200% skill damage from this one skill.

Skill Choice & Augments
Arc-Knives of course, it's what this build is centered around. Scales on action skill and melee along with being able to activate any melee-related effects.
Altered Cabron gives us sustain, damage, and movement speed. It's a pretty stacked augment as is, but it's another source of a corrosive bonus element, giving us even better damage with Groundbreaker.
Inferno Protocol is another bonus element, this one incendiary. Great synergy with both Groundbreaker and El Diablito. You can also recast to end Arc Knives early and get a big heal, being a pretty effective 'oh shit' button should you need it.

Class Mods
Esgrimidor
Additional melee crit chance as well has letting us extend our action skill duration with those crits. Very good unique effect as is, but it's also able to roll up to 5 more points into Cruel Accrual, giving us up to 200% skill damage from it. This is an incredibly effective class mod for mobbing as well as still having good potential for bossing. Unfortunately, this class mod can also roll points into Booming Business. Ideally you don't want that, but if it happens to roll on a mod that's incredible otherwise, you can use a non-splash ordnance.

Buster
Buster is for when you really want to up your bossing potential. The unique effect is useless to us however the ability to roll up to 5 points into Per My Last is not. This gives us a 25% chance for our action skill damage to deal double, which lets Groundbreaker start to snowball insanely fast. In the video you can see boss kills using a Buster that only has 3 points into Per My Last and those only get better with more.

Repkits
Triple Bypass
This is the Repkit I use most often due to the amazing synergy it has with Now With Caffeine. This Specialization directly cuts away 25% of your cooldown, meaning you can immediately restore 75% of your action skill CD by popping through these 3 charges. This allows us to not have to worry about any action skill cooldown reduction in our trees while having next to no downtime.
AF1000
This is a great option if you want to have something more offensive in this slot. Getting one of these with some sort of damage buff like Hard Hitter means you can have that buff active for a very long time. If I feel like really tryharding for whatever reason, I'll swap between both these repkits during combat. AF1000 for while I'm in Arc Knives and swapping to the Triple Bypass when I need to get back into it.

Shields
There's two main options here, both felt about the same to me in practice. I recommend trying both to see which you like better.

Onion
This shield offers us a decent bit of defensive value, giving 2 seconds of immunity each time an armor segment breaks. it's not much, but it's more than enough to keep us alive through combat and let us tank some things we otherwise couldn't.
Timekeeper's New Shield
TKNS is similar to the Onion, though instead of immunity acts more like a general stat stick. It gives us flat health, health regen, and damage reduction. Again, lets us stay alive through combat.

No matter which you choose, a defensive option in this slot is ideal. We could get more damage through the Heavyweight, but damage doesn't matter if you just end up dead. And as of right now, it's very difficult to be in an enemy's face and not die either to them or to something exploding. We want to stay alive as much as possible because if we go down, so does Arc-Knives.

Ordnance
As mentioned in the class mod section, your Ordnance choice is going to have to change depending on if your Esgrimidor has points in Booming Business.

Slippy
This is the most ideal Ordnance. While you aren't going to be using it often, it's easily best in slot just because it's the one we're boosting the most.

Throwing Knife
If you do have points into Booming Business, then you want something that doesn't deal splash damage. For that, I tend to just use any Throwing Knife.

Weapons
Something corrosive, something incendiary, maybe something shock.
Ideally, a corrosive and incendiary Maliwan. This allows us to easily buff Collaborate Ignition against any health type.

To note here as well, blades currently seem to STILL be a scam. They'd recently been made to actually give a melee damage buff (previously they were pretty much cosmetic) but this DOES NOT apply to Arc Knives. Along with that, bladed weapons swing slower. So even for meleeing outside of Arc Knives, while they do buff your melee damage, it'll likely lower your DPS with the tradeoff of higher damage per hit. If you plan to only ever melee while in Arc Knives, there's no reason to specifically farm for a bladed weapon.
Currently it seems that only bladed Maliwans actually provide a melee damage buff at all.

Shield FirmwareReel Big Fist
Enhancement FirmwareAction Fist

3/3 Reel Big Fist
Additional raw melee damage along with some more AOE for mobbing. Arc-Knives are already somewhat AOE, but having even bigger area with even more damage can't hurt.

2/3 Action Fist
Again, just some more damage stats. Nothing too crazy, but its the most stats we can get for the two points. You could go for something more defensive like Baker or Risky Boots but they don't really feel necessary.

Specialization

Specialization 1Groundbreaker
Specialization 2Bear Arms
Specialization 3I Am A Gun
Specialization 4Now With Caffeine

Groundbreaker
Just an absolutely cracked Specialization. If you remember it from BL3, it'll feel very familiar.
Can't stack off melee damage, but we get around this through bonus elements. Because Groundbreaker itself is melee and we have bonus elements applying on our melee hits, our bonus elements benefit from Groundbreaker's damage and then feed into the next hit. This lets us snowball our damage HARD to take out tougher bosses.

Bear Arms & I Am A Gun
As mentioned throughout this guide, these skills let us get some crazy value out of some interesting skills in our green tree such as Diamond Hands. It also means we can get some very minor value out of Enhancements.

Now With Caffeine
Unlike other cooldown reduction, Now With Caffeine instantly replenishes 25% of our cooldown on activation. This means with the Triple Bypass we can immediately get 75% of our action skill back and never have to worry about cooldown rate from elsewhere.

Gameplay

General
Arc-Knives gameplay doesn't have much fancy going on with it. Simply run around and slap people, using your right click when available.

Some things to keep in mind though, Arc Knives are inherently AOE. This is great for hitting multiple enemies in one go, terrible for the amount of explosives in mobbing areas. Keep an eye out for barrels and throwables and try to play around them accordingly.
Along with that, every single attack with Arc Knives is a dash. The left clicks are shorter lunges with the right click being a pretty substantial dash. This is another pro/con situation where the movement gained from this is fantastic, but it can make it a bit annoying at times to move and attack precisely.
Also always keep in mind that if you find yourself in a rough spot, Inferno Protocol can be recast as a big heal. Most often this will refill your entire health bar.

Flying Enemies
Arc Knives have somewhat of an auto-target to them. That combined with each attack being a dash means that sometimes you can actually attack and stick on flying enemies. Unfortunately, it does depend on the enemy and can be very inconsistent on bosses. But at least for mobbing, flying enemies shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Bossing
Smack them repeatedly. Groundbreaker will build, and you'll see your hits begin to do more and more damage each time until the boss just gets obliterated.
Esgrimidor can be used for bossing, but it's incredibly helpful to have as many points as you can into Cruel Accrual.
Buster is ideal to swap to for bossing as long as you have points into Per My Last, ideally all 5. This just makes Groundbreaker stack even quicker and can get you some very fast kills.
