League of Legends Patch 8.23 Tier List for Climbing Solo Queue

League of Legends Patch 8.23 Tier List for Climbing Solo Queue

Whoops, looks like you’ve found an older tier list. Here’s the new tier list 8.24

Welcome to the Mobalytics Predictive Tier List for League of Legends for Patch 8.23!

This list was curated in collaboration with our analyst, Hewitt “prohibit” Benson, our Challenger Coach, Adam “Morïarty” Isles, and Kellen “Exil” Pontius. Unlike most tier lists, we publish ours before, or as a patch goes live, according to the predictions of our in-house experts.

Here are the Patch 8.23 notes for reference.

The Format and Methodology

If you’re wondering how we make our tier list, check out our video explanation!

To improve the accuracy, usefulness, and understanding of our Tier List, we’ve decided to split it into two lists – one for the wide majority of the player base, and another intended for high elo. The goal of our list is to give the best recommendations for what we think will help you best climb in solo queue. Previously, our placements could often conflict with what players saw in a Challenger player’s stream or in pro-play. Often times, a champ could be very strong in a high-skilled players hands but we didn’t feel right endorsing the champ for a lower-skill player to pick up. Having two lists will allow us to make better and more relevant judgments across the spectrum.

We’ll also be changing our difficulty rating system from Learning Curve to “Skill Floor”. After receiving feedback from the community, we realized that some were associating Learning Curve with including the full potential (Skill Ceiling) of a champion. We want to avoid that for the general list and want the definition to lean more towards how long it would take to start seeing a champion’s power level on our list in terms of the number of games invested.

Let’s say you’re debating between learning and climbing with Jax (A-tier | Simple) or Rengar (A-tier | Severe) – you’re going to want to go with Jax. Why? This is because Jax has a lower skill floor and would require less games to play at an A-Tier level in solo queue. If you tried to pick up Rengar, you wouldn’t get the full value of A-tier until after about 15 matches of practice whereas with Jax, you would get that full 15 everytime you play him.

Another example would be between Nidalee (S-tier | Intense) vs Xin Zhao (B-Tier | Simple). Let’s say you’re about to play your last match before promos and you get auto-filled to Jungle (a role you’re not too familiar with). Even though he’s lower on the list, you’d be better off choosing Xin because you don’t have the required number of games to break the skill floor of Nidalee.

Higher skill floor champions will scale better with time investment – Severe champs will outperform Simple champs in the long run because Simple champs generally have their weaknesses exposed the higher you climb.

So if your question is, “How long until I’ll start seeing results?”, the answer would be harder = longer time, easier = shorter time. If your question is. “Will this champion still be strong as I climb in ranks?”, the answer would be harder = moreso, easier = less so.

Disclaimer #1: If a champion isn’t on our Tier List, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t climb with them. You’ll just have to put in more effort to get similar results as our Optimal, Great, and Good choices for climbing.

Disclaimer #2: This list is meant to evaluate the champions that we believe are best for climbing Solo Queue. Although there can certainly be some overlap, we are NOT looking to name the champions that are the best in pro-play or organized, competitive 5 on 5. This is why champs that require a ton of team coordination such as Ryze, may not be included or ranked highly.

Expert picks

Katarina – Mid (Kellen – “Exil”)

“Well, it’s Preseason, which means Katarina is S-tier. (See Season 8’s Preseason tier list) Kat will always be able to thrive in the chaos of a solo queue meta, and during this time, games are the most chaotic by far. On top of that, her laning phase got a bit better being able to take defensive stat runes to survive lane (and she also as a new hotness rune).

Dark Harvest is the perfect rune for her, allowing her to get resets. The more kills, the stronger she gets… sounds pretty good for Katarina. Roam around the map and stack up to watch your enemies spam ping their mid asking where is the M.I.A ping. As for your secondary page, now that you’re not locked into Attack Speed from the Precision path, this is now perfect for her. Triumph on Katarina? Poggers.

Zyra – Mid (Adam – “Moriarty”)

“On release, Zyra was a mid laner that needed to be a hotfixed due to her insane damge output. Now she has finally returned to mid lane thanks to the rune update allowing her to take an insane amount of AP early to bully out her mid lane opponents. Not only is her waveclear and zoning good, but if the enemy Jungler attempts to gank a Zyra when she has ult they are likely to get 1-shot from a full rotation.

The good thing about her is that her teamfight scaling is also quite good so her transition from lane bully to mid game teamfighting is solid. Try either Dark Harvest, or Electrocute on her mid lane for the extra burst.”

Ezreal – Bot  (Hewitt – “prohibit”)

“Ezreal was in a pretty bad spot in solo queue for a long time, but with the new Kleptomancy buffs coming in and the recent buffs to his W and R, he is actually in a pretty serviceable spot. He’s not great, but at least your teammates aren’t literally trolling when they pick him.

I expect to see his performance steadily increase as players get more comfortable with his play pattern and burst potential. He seems to favor a much more aggressive style than he has in the past. Try picking up an early Pickaxe instead of Tear of Goddess in matchups where you don’t have to play passive and you might surprise yourself with how much kill pressure you really have.

High-ELO Commentary

Top (Exil)

“Bruisers are going to be strong this season, but don’t discredit tanks just yet! Champs like Riven, Fiora, and Renekton did get better with this patch, and so much of that reason is not locking yourself into stats you don’t want. Imagine Renekton who gets to take AD, AD, and Armor in his runes, while still getting to go Conqueror or Press The Attack into Resolve… how do you deal with that?

AP tanks such as Maokai, Gragas, and Galio ALSO got better because now you can go AP, AP, and Armor and still take Aftershock, not limiting yourself early game for damage and wave clear.

The final thing to remember is that for so long, Jayce, Kennen, and Swain, top were dominant and top tier simply because they crushed these types of bruisers and tanks in lane. This means expect them to make a comeback again as counterpicks.”

Jungle (Moriarty)

“A longer laning phase has lead to the rise of Junglers with strong early ganks and/or early skirmish skills, hence the rise of champs like Kha’zix and Warwick. Bonus points if you can abuse Dark Harvest like Shaco. Rammus has shot up to S-tier rather quickly due to his amazing ability to gank during the lane phase and due to the huge stat bonuses from the new runes. He’ll be able to take so much armor and maintain his clear speed with attack speed so watch out for him.”

Mid (Moriarty)

“This patch, mid lane is similar to jungle where it focuses heavily on one’s ability to skirmish, roam, and impact the lane phase. Champions who are able to do this while taking Dark Harvest and who have good synergy with the new rune stat setup like Katarina or Karthus, who can take a lot of AP early on to bully lane, are coming out on top.

The Bot lane ADC/Support (prohibit)

“The bar has been raised for how greedy you can play for late game in Bottom lane. Marksmen with a weak mid game cannot survive. If you want to have control over your destiny, you either need to be playing mages, lane bully marksmen, or a select few bruisers. If you decide not to pick one of those three categories, you’ll be giving up a lot of individual influence in lane because Supports are becoming stronger and other lanes have benefited much more than marskmen with the ability to optimize their stat bonuses & runes.

Supports are now able to optimize their setups heavily now that their stat bonuses are no longer restricted to the tree they take. You will see mage supports have a stronger early game than ever before with the additional AP while still being able to grab resistances. Tank supports will be able to start with heavy armor bonuses to compliment their high natural HP and HP items.

  • Marvin Preston

    Good patch

  • Luís Paulo da Silva

The more I read the patch notes, the more I get the feeling Vi is gonna kick ass!

    – Longer lane phases and lower exp on jungle mobs, really bringing up early-mid game gankers.
    – Local gold for turrent damage, really bringing up hard hitting snowball junglers to scratch some gold after a successful gank.
    – The importance of jungle objectives early on, now that taking down turrents is gonna be this much harder, really bringing up early-mid junglers to fight for thoses objectives.
    – The extra gold from shut down, giving extra value to “bounty hunter” junglers.

I honestly doesn’t see any champion that likes this changes better than her.

  • Jase

Gonna assume Kat’s viability spiked as a result of Dark Harvest working so well with her.

  • Alan Portal

Is Taliyah a better mid laner or jungler right now? I’m not seeing her anywhere. I know she is far from viable right now, but I love play her as a jungler, I wonder if there’s any chance she’ll be good again.

    • Sidieus

She is a high winrate jungle pick in high elo solo q (since she has a pretty high skillcap) But she’s strong because she has a very good clear and she is basically like a TF except she can poke better, engage/disengage wither her knuckup and just generally deal a ton of dmg with i.e. runic echoes, morello

    • Eren Seven

According to this tier list she is C-tier in jungle but nowhere in mid so i guess she’s better jungle

  • Michael Su

Azir is viable in solo queue?

  • Jase

    wait where’d evelynn go?

  • Ricardo Fernandes

How much full AD and full AP comps will punished with the rune shards?

  • Cristian Mercado

Hey, I was wondering about malzahar mid. He isn’t anywhere in the low Elo tier list. He is a pretty solid counter to many assassins and roamers as he often prevents roams and can hard counter them in team fights just by pressing R. He is also easy to play and, from my experience, due to his strong push he is able to take advantage of getting gold from plates in the early game by just shoving the enemy under tower

  • ToR3s3K

Hi, what do you think about darkharvest Jhin (Kaisa) i have played it and it semes to be pretty good.
And for TOP i have played few games of klepto lucian and it good 🙂

  • CowTrainer

Why is Tryndamere A tier in high elo, but nowhere to be seen on the low elo tier list?

  • Qwertyseba

Sad to see Yorick gone. Got nerfed so hard patch after patch…

  • Kairan Albuquerque

is evelynn viable in atual meta?

  • Matthew Ye

Why are you tier lists so different from other lists? I see Rengar Top in S tier on your lists, but almost never in any other. It’s especially apparent in this patch since you say bot lane is crazy, but it seems pretty normal on other lists. Can you explain please? Thanks!
