Overview

Priest is World of Warcraft’s iconic healing and shadow magic class. Priests use Mana to cast powerful healing spells, protective abilities, and Shadow damage offensive spells.

WoW: Forever keeps Priest's classic Discipline / Holy / Shadow structure, while making targeted talent and ability changes rather than completely reworking the class.

Specializations

Discipline Summary

Discipline is the support focused healing specialization, combining healing with offensive and defensive utility. In WoW: Forever, Discipline receives several new tools including Penance, Divine Aegis, Soul Warding, and Twin Disciplines, giving the specialisation more ways to protect allies while also contributing damage. Discipline focuses on efficient healing, shields, defensive utility, and Mana management, making it an attractive choice for players who enjoy a more active and versatile healing playstyle rather than focusing purely on raw healing throughput. Viable for both PvE and PvP, keeping in mind there will be some talent points adjusted to suit your preferred playstyle.

Holy Summary

Holy is the dedicated healing specialization, focusing on powerful direct healing spells and keeping party and raid members alive through sustained and emergency healing. WoW: Forever expands the Holy toolkit with abilities such as Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal, while talents such as Litany of Light provide additional Mana efficiency. Holy remains the natural choice for players looking to specialise primarily in healing, with the updated talent tree providing additional options for both single target and group healing. Viable mainly for PvE.

Shadow Summary

Shadow is the ranged DPS specialization, focusing on Shadow damage, damage over time effects such as Shadow Word: Pain: and Devouring Plague, and powerful direct attacks such as Mind Blast and Mind Flay. WoW: Forever expands the Shadow toolkit with talents such as Improved Mind Flay, Early Demise, and Devouring Contagion, while the changes to Shadowform provide additional benefits to Shadow spell efficiency, damage and mana efficiency. Shadow also retains the unique utility and support that make Priest valuable to groups, making it the natural choice for players who want to specialize in ranged DPS while bringing additional utility to their group through passive healing from Vampiric Embrace. Viable for both PvE and PvP with talent adjustments required to suit playstyle.

New Baseline Abilities

Shadow Word: Death - A shadow spell that functions in a similar vein to a Warrior’s Execute. It’s referenced in the Early Demise talent.

As mentioned earlier, Devouring Plague and Fear Ward have been made baseline abilities for all Priests. Fear Ward in particular being available to all is a huge factor in making all races viable as opposed to Vanilla.

New Talents

Discipline

Power in Light: Your Smite and Penance spells deal increased damage to targets afflicted with your Holy Fire. Scaling at 2%/4%/6%/8%/10% with increased talent point spend

Twin Disciplines: Increases the damage and healing of your instant cast spells by 1%,/2%,/3%,/4%,/5%

Holy Precision: Increases your chance to hit with Holy spells by 6%,12%,18%

Renewed Hope: Your heals from Flash Heal, Binding Heal, Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal, and Penance gain 2%,4%,6%,8%,10% increased critical strike chance when cast on targets with Weakened Soul, and reduce the remaining duration of Weakened Soul on their target by 1,2,3,4,5 seconds after talent point spend

Divine Aegis: Your critical heals create a protective shield on the target, absorbing 5%,10%,15% (based on talent points spent) of the amount healed. Lasts 12 sec.

Penance: Launches a volley of Holy Light at the target, causing 96 Holy damage to an enemy, or 233 healing to an ally. Instantly and every 1 sec for 2 sec.

This ability was implemented from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion that can be used offensively against enemies or defensively to heal friendly targets, giving Discipline another versatile tool for both damage and healing.

Holy

Twilight Focus: Gives you a 20%,45% up to a maximum of 70% chance to avoid interruption caused by damage while casting any spell.

Binding Heal: Heals a friendly target and the caster for 346 to 403 and is a Low threat ability

Litany of Light: When you cast a healing spell, gain Mana equal to 5% and 10% of the base cost of the spell if your previous heal was a different spell.

Prayer of Mending (Holy): Places a spell on the target that heals them for 247 the next time they take damage or receive non periodic healing. When the heal occurs, Prayer of Mending jumps to a party or raid member within 20 yards. Jumps up to 5 times and lasts 30 sec after each jump. This spell can only be placed on one target at a time per caster. Previously introduced in The Burning Crusade as a learnable spell used by all specs at level 68.

Shadow

Improved Mind Flay: Your Mind Flay now deals 10% to 20% more damage, gains 5/10 yards of increased range, but slows the target's movement speed by 35% down from 50% as a trade off

Devouring Contagion: Reduces the mana cost of your Devouring Plague by 25%/50%. Targets that die while Devouring Plague is active spread it, jumping to a nearby enemy within 5 and 10 yards for the remaining duration.

Early Demise: Increases Shadow Word: Death's critical strike chance on targets at or below 20% health by 15%/30%.

Reworked Shadowform: Shadowform receives additional benefits for Shadow Priests. The version shown in the BlizzCon Beta significantly reduces the mana cost of Shadow spells while also increasing their critical damage bonus, improving Shadow's mana efficiency and overall damage scaling.

Playable Races

We have mentioned the Priest Racials in the previous section, but wanted to also take a closer look for those who want to know more about the details.

Reminder: All Priests, regardless of race, now have access to Devouring Plague and Fear Ward

Dark Sacrifice (New) - An instant cast spell that drains the casters health over 15 seconds while restoring their mana over 15 seconds. 10 minute cooldown.

Best Race for Priests

Alliance

For alliance, the clear choice is likely to be Gnome for all content, but not really for it’s Priest specific Racial, but instead for ‘Eureka!’ with its 2 minute cooldown, mana & heal increase sounding incredibly powerful for this class.

If you don’t fancy playing a Gnome, Night Elf might just be the second best, but by a sizable margin.

Horde

For Horde, Troll is best for overal throughput in PvE, and as Shadow in PvP. For Healing, Undead will likely be best for PvP, though should also be more than viable as Shadow in PvP too.

Conclusion

The overall goal of the changes to Priest in WoW: Forever appears to be moving away from some of the more mandatory or awkward talent choices found in Classic and replacing them with talents and abilities that provide more meaningful choices for each specialization. The updated talent trees give all three specs additional tools while allowing each one to develop a clearer identity and playstyle. The Priest is shaping up to be a really exciting choice to go for in WoW: Forever, especially with all the new and intriguing priest racials to experiment with!
