WoW Forever Class

Combat Rogue Guide - Talents, Rotations, Races & More

Updated on Nov 2, 2026
Nov 2, 2026

Overview

Combat Rogue keeps its familiar WoW Classic playstyle, offering low downtime, versatile utility, and tools for tackling tougher enemies. WoW Forever adds several quality-of-life changes that make the spec smoother to play.

Energy now regenerates at 1 per 0.1 seconds instead of 20 every 2 seconds, keeping the same overall rate. Improved Poisons can preserve poison charges, reducing how often you need to reapply them, while access to axes expands your weapon choices. Instant Poison, Dense Sharpening Stone, and Windfury Totem can also be used together, adding flexibility throughout leveling and endgame without changing Combat’s core gameplay.

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Strong single-target damage and powerful offensive cooldowns
  • Excellent crowd control and escape tools
  • Low downtime with no mana to manage
  • Damage relies on keeping your weapons upgraded
  • Limited self-healing
  • Vulnerable when defensive cooldowns are unavailable

Spec Guide

Combat is the best levelling Rogue spec by far, offering strong versatility, low downtime, and the ability to kill strong enemies using its utility.

Gameplay and Rotation

While levelling you will follow 2 different rotations - before and after you can get the higher rank of Slice and Dice, available at level 42. This rank upgrades the attack speed bonus from 20%>30%, making it the better finisher.

Before Rank 2 Slice and Dice

  1. Use Riposte
  2. Use Eviscerate when you will not fit in another Sinister Strike before the mob dies
  3. Use Sinister Strike

After Rank 2 Slice and Dice

  1. Use Riposte
  2. Use Slice and Dice with 2 or more combo points to maintain the buff
  3. Use Sinister Strike

Riposte is an incredibly powerful ability - it costs a very small amount of Energy, and deals high damage when compared to our Sinister Strike. Not only that, but it also disarms the target, reducing the amount of damage they deal. This is a very high efficiency ability, and should be used constantly when possible.

Cooldown Usage

When Blade Flurry is up, make sure you pull 2 or more mobs together. If they are relatively high level, you can combine Blade Flurry with Evasion to make sure you don't die before you can kill them. Focus on bursting a target down with your cooldowns up - remember that Blade Flurry also increases your attack speed in addition to letting you hit a nearby target, but that part of the talent should be seen as a bonus instead of the main component.

Gear

As a Physical based damage dealer, Rogues are defined by their weapons, even more so than most classes. Our damage is almost entirely based on auto attacks and Sinister Strike while levelling, so it is important to keep your weapons up to date - While other gear can help you out, it pales in comparison to how important a strong mainhand weapon is. When looking for a weapon, you should consider the raw DPS of the weapon as well as its speed - slower weapons are far superior for your mainhand, while your offhand prefers a faster weapon with good stats (although your offhands speed matters far less than your mainhands speed).

Once you have picked up the Hack and Slash talent, certain weapon types gain a significant advantage; Maces lose value, while swords and Axes gain value, especially in the offhand.

Some Weapon options have been listed below. Note that due to the obfuscation of gear in WoW Forever, this list is currently incomplete, and will be updated as new weapons are found after launch.

Both - Level 10 - Blade of Cunning

Horde - Level 14 - Chanting Blade

Horde - Level 20 - Wingblade

Alliance - Level 24 - Phytoblade

Both - Level 24 - Outlaw Sabre

Stat Priority

Primary Stats

  1. Agility
  2. Strength
  3. Attack Power
  4. Stamina

Agility is by far the best stat for a rogue - it gives us attack power, critical strike, and dodge all in the same packet. It should be the main stat you look for while levelling

Attack Power and Strength achieve roughly the same objective; each point of strength gives 1 attack power. Notably, strength can be buffed by bonuses such as Blessing of Kings and Fish Bowl, so always pick strength if given a choice of equal value.

Stamina, while it doesn't contribute towards our damage, can help us stay alive in a rough situation, and will let us be able to take on more dangerous challenges.

Consumables

Standard Consumables

Rogue is a class which requires a lot of bag slots dedicated to class reagents - Vanish requires Flash Powder, Blind requires Blinding Powder, and its always important to carry around extra poisons. In addition, you should always try to carry around Healing Potions - these can save your life in a pinch and be a valuable tool to make your levelling smoother.

In addition to these, it is very important to keep your Well Fed buff active - In WoW Forever, most Well Fed buffs also increase your experience gained, so losing uptime on these can directly impact your levelling speed. Any food will do - don't worry too much about buying or crafting expensive consumables when a cheap Spiced Wolf Meat provides the same benefit, just with a slightly smaller stat buff.

Damage Consumables

Weapons stones are a cheap and easy way to increase your DPS while levelling - they are frequently crafted by Blacksmiths to level their profession, and are usually low in price for the benefit they provide. Even using the lowest rank, Rough Sharpening Stone, is a significant increase to your DPS, and will help you kill mobs a fair bit faster.

Other consumables can become more expensive - look for elixirs that are crafted at low levels when possible. These provide a small stat increase, but are usually very cheap, preventing you from spending large amounts of gold on minor levelling bonuses. Elixirs such as Elixir of Minor Force and Elixir of Minor Agility are both crafted at very low levels of alchemy, and use inexpensive herbs.

Professions

Skinning and Leatherworking are a powerful combination while levelling - Skinning is easy to maintain and use due to its reliance solely on killing mobs, while Leatherworking can put the materials gained to good use crafting some strong early gear. If you aren't willing to make time to create this gear, then the skins can be sold either on the auction house or simply to a vendor, giving you some much needed cash early on. In addition, Leatherworking provides the very powerful Camp Tent camp buff, which is your buff of choice when levelling solo.

Cooking lets you make your own campfires, and is an important tool to have - not only does it allow you to use powerful buffs such as Camp Tent or Camp Chair from your main professions, but it can also be required for some niche quests on your levelling journey.

Playable Races

Alliance

Skyborne

While all the races are very close, being within 1.5% of each other regardless of fight duration, High Order Skyborne and Windshaper Skyborne both slightly outstrip the other options over a variety of fight lengths. The additional haste from Wind Blessed means more auto attacks and more poison procs, despite not affecting energy regen, and Elemental Insight provides a slight bonus when fighting elementals that firmly pushes the new race into the lead.

Gnome

Gnome is the next best option - the new Eureka! racial lets improve our already impressive burst when combined with abilities such as Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush, and consumables such as Thistle Tea. Orc fulfils a similar role on Horde side with their Blood Fury ability, although to a slightly lesser extent.

Human

Human deserves an honourable mention - it is only slightly worse than Gnome for Alliance, but has an entirely passive DPS racial in Ruthless, reducing the amount of planning required.

Macros

General attack macro

#showtooltip Sinister Strike
/startattack
/cast Riposte
/cast Sinister Strike

This macro lets you start your auto swing even when out of range of an enemy target, or when you don't have enough energy to cast any of your abilities. Riposte being at the top of the macro also ensures that it'll always be cast over Sinister Strike when available, helping you not miss a cast. You can replace the two Sinister Strike lines with any damaging ability.

Stealth macro:

/cast !Stealth

This macro lets you spam it to cast stealth; the ! in front of the ability name prevents you from unstealthing if you are already stealthed

Mainhand Poison:

#show 16
/use Instant Poison
/use 16
/click StaticPopup1Button1

This applies the highest available rank of Instant Poison to your mainhand Weapon.

OH Poison:

#show 17
/use Instant Poison
/use 17
/click StaticPopup1Button1

This applies the highest available rank of Instant Poison to your offhand Weapon

Swifty CD macro:

#showtooltip
/cast Adrenaline Rush
/cast Blade Flurry
/use 13
/use 14

This is a simple macro to activate all of your cooldowns; /use 13 and /use 14 refer to your trinket slots. You can also add any racial CD to this macro to combine it, such as Berserking or Eureka!

Tips & Tricks

Rogue is a class that relies heavily on uptime - try and make sure you are constantly fighting mobs when able to, and try not to spend time on the move not fighting. Even while travelling long distances, it is efficient to fight mobs along the way; remember you can move while fighting, so keep travelling while gaining experience towards your next objective!

If you are a more relaxed player, the Sleeping Bag chain is a very powerful tool - not only can you get the buff while camping, you can also use the buff acquisition duration to take a break or attend to other tasks outside of the game. Try and get it early so you can maintain your 3% XP buff the whole game.
