Build Overview

Welcome to my Hollow Palm guide for Monk: Acolyte of Chayula.

Hollow Palm Technique allows us to attack with our bare hands as if we were using a Quarterstaff. This means that we don't need to find new weapons as we level up but we only scale our damage with skill gem levels and Evasion Rating on gear.

Note that stacking Energy Shield is a bad idea while in the campaign but might be good later. Also note that the Quarterstaff exclusive passive nodes like Martial Artistry do NOT work with Hollow Palm Technique for some reason.

This build felt pretty okay in the campaign and most boss fights came down to me just hitting the boss until it Froze and then by the time they thawed out they would be heavy stunned and then dead.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Don't need to upgrade weapons
  • Has gap closer options
  • Freezes and Stuns bosses to death
  • Melee
  • Conditional Power
  • Less skill area than using a staff

Build Variants

Start with Glacial Cascade (same supports as Ice Strike) and then switch over once you can start using Ice Strike.

We are using Inner Turmoil which stacks up Volatility when we inflict an Elemental Ailment. Volatility is a debuff that stacks up to 200 times and has a duration of 4 seconds, when Volatility expires it provides 1% Damage as Chaos for 10 seconds per stack.

This means that we can potentially get up to 200% Damage as Chaos extra for burst moments. Normally this would be clunky since each stack of Volatility resets the timer; however, we can manually detonate our own Volatility by using a skill supported by Catharsis. This makes it so that you can only use the skill with 20+ Volatility but it will explode a random amount of Volatility on your character between 1 and your current Volatility. This allows you to instantly power up when facing tough enemies as long as you've carried a lot of stacks into the fight.

Start with Glacial Cascade (same supports as Ice Strike below) and then switch over once you can start using Ice Strike.

Quarterstaff Strike - Embarrassingly powerful single target 'skill'. In Acts 1-2 this will most likely be your best DPS for single target.

Ice Strike - Main Damage skill, it has a short dash and can help freeze enemies. Our attack size is somewhat nerfed while using Hollow Palm Technique but it does do some area damage.

Shattering Palm - Helps add some AoE clear and has a long dash to engage. Use this when engaging a group to cover them in shards of ice that will explode.

Tempest Bell - Useable after 4 Ice Strikes, drop this for some more damage. Note that it can be hard to hit your target and the bell before you have Reaching Strike since we have small weapon range with our fists. Stun II is pretty great here for stunning bosses.

Killing Palm - Nice for Behead II and Life Drain which are great when you finish off an enemy with the skill.

War Banner - This provides a short term damage boost after hitting enemies enough.

Into the Breach - This is from our 2nd set of ascendancy passives. You'll see little flames appearing on the ground that you can pickup for health/mana/buff.

Companion: {0} - There are several good nodes in the tree that buff us for being near a companion. Inspiring Ally also makes any companion damage boosts also count for us. This is a great source of increased damage from the tree. To find a good companion go to Act 3 - Infested Barrens, there is a checkpoint that always has 2 beasts. Once you find the checkpoint look for 'Haste Aura' on a beast, if you don't see it leave the rares alive and press ESC -> Respawn at checkpoint. If you do see it use the Companion skill on it just before killing it.=

We focus mostly on increased damage and Evasion. Since Hollow Palm Technique lowers our base crit from 10% to 5% there's no good reason to invest in crit early on.

Take Inner Turmoil as your first Ascendancy node.
