[0.5] Gas Grenade Pathfinder

Build Overview

CURRENT WORK IN PROGRESS PREPARATION & CLEANUP FOR PATCH 1.0

Overview:

Gas Grenade creates Poison Clouds which are ground surfaces that constantly apply Poison to Monsters within and grow in area over time. When combined with Herald of Plague, this build is easily able to clear large packs of Monsters, whilst the Pathfinder's Overwhelming Toxicity doubles the amount of Poison stacks, helping to solve single target Damage.

Main Combo

Drop Gas Grenades and immediately explode them using Explosive Shot to apply proliferating Poison to Monsters. Against tanky targets, use Despair followed by Entangle, then stack Gas Grenade Poison Clouds on the mob.

Be aware that the Ratha's Assault Support Gem linked to Explosive Shot will prevent the Skill from being reloaded normally - you need to dodge roll to reload 4 bolts per roll.

Note: Explosive Shot is OPTIONAL. If you prefer to play a one-button build and don't mind the delayed damage from grenades detonating from their fuse timers, you can play without it. Ensure you take Volatile Grenades on the Passive Skill Tree in that case.

Supporting Skills & Defences

Herald of Plague is used to provide Poison proliferation, allowing for smoother map clear - you can play without it, but I recommend using it as it prevents some backtracking for loot or getting bodyblocked in narrow areas. Despair will lower Monster Chaos Resistance, making them take more Chaos Damage from Poison, whilst Withering Presence applies Wither to nearby Monsters making them take increased Chaos Damage. Entangle is used to apply both Critical Weakness and Withered for single target Damage with the weapon swap setup.

This build invests into both Evasion and Energy Shield, making use of Wind Dancer and Ghost Dance for a fairly stock-standard defensive setup for a build on the right-hand side of the Passive Skill Tree. To help solve recovery alongside the regeneration from Ghost Dance, we're using Enduring Elixirs and Shavronne's Satchel for on-demand Life and Energy Shield recovery.

Levelling:

IMPORTANT - Make sure to review the written information for each build variant of progression under each section: Equipment, Skill Gems and Passive Tree.

This build uses a typical grenade spamming setup for levelling, making use of Explosive Grenade, Gas Grenade, Flash Grenade and even Oil Grenade later on. The switch to poison-based Gas Grenade begins at the end of Act 4.

Second Weapon Set:

Despair and Entangle must only be used by your second weapon set (The Wicked Quill + Effigy of Cruelty). Open your Skill Gems panel, open the pop-out for each of these Skills and ensure the weapon set configuration at the bottom is correct.

Endgame Crossbow Craft:

These steps may refer to modifier tiers, see here for more information.

  1. Obtain a Magic rarity item level 82 Siege Crossbow with +5 to level of all Projectile Skills(suffix) and T1 or T2 flat Fire, Cold or Lightning(prefix). In SSF you will need to use Perfect Transmutes/Augmentations on Siege Crossbow bases until you hit. Note that item level 81 also works, but you will exclude the chance of hitting T1 local increased Physical Damage in step 4.
  2. Use a Greater Essence of Seeking to upgrade the Siege Crossbow to Rare rarity and add the Critical Hit Chance suffix.
  3. Activate an Omen of the Liege and an Omen of Sinistral Necromancy and use a Preserved Jawbone. Reveal Increased Grenade Damage/Duration at the Well of Souls.
  4. Activate an Omen of Greater Exaltation and use a Perfect Exalted Orb. You're looking for either of the remaining two flat added Elemental Damage modifiers or local increased Physical Damage to finish the craft.

Campaign Quest Bonus Choices:

  • Act 2 Ancient Vows Quest: 30% increased Charm Charges gained
  • Act 3 Corpse-snake Venom: 25% increased Stun Threshold
  • Act 4 Blank Tattoos: +5 Dexterity, +5 Strength, +5 Intelligence
  • Act 4 Goddess of Justice: 30% increased Life Recovery from Flasks
  • Act 4 Shark Fin: 30% increased Armour, Evasion, and Energy Shield
  • Interlude Seven Pillars: +5% to Elemental Resistances or +5 to all Attributes (replace with 3% increased Movement Speed when Resistances/Attributes are solved in late game)

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Good clearing with Herald of Plague and large area coverage
  • High damage output and massive pre-stack potential on bosses
  • Strong defences and recovery
  • Delayed Damage (Grenade Fuse, if not using Explosive Shot)
  • Not the fastest mapper

Obtaining a Crossbow at Level 2:

On a fresh start, there are 4 methods to obtain a Crossbow right off the beach:

  1. Get a lucky Makeshift Crossbow drop directly from the Miller.
  2. Sell any loot from the Miller and acquire a white Makeshift Crossbow for gold (Renly's shop). This is the best method but it's not always available.
  3. Mule a Mercenary to Clearfell Encampment and pass the starter Makeshift Crossbow and anything else you find to your Ranger via your Stash.
  4. Begin with a Bow in the first few zones and delay the Crossbow until you have enough gold (this is only recommended if you're experienced at the game).

Tip: Look for gear with + to Strength early on to be able to equip Crossbow upgrades. If you don't find any, don't worry! You can simply temporarily allocate a Strength node directly branching off from the Ranger start - see the Passive Tree notes for more information.

Gear Priority:

  1. Crossbow (as much of any flat Damage as possible)
  2. Boots (increased Movement Speed over any other stats)
  3. Rings (Iron Rings if possible, any flat Damage modifiers)
  4. Gloves (flat added Damage modifiers if possible)
  5. Everything else (Maximum Life, Resistances, Strength)

Bonus tip: Recovery modifiers are surprisingly powerful in Act 1. If you can obtain some Life Regeneration or Life gained on Kill etc. these will make progression feel a lot more comfortable.

Skill Gem Acquisition:

  • Explosive Grenade - Level 1 Uncut Skill Gem (given by Renly upon first entering Clearfell Encampment)
  • Frost Bomb - Level 1 Uncut Skill Gem (obtained from the Abandoned Stash found at Mysterious Campsite in Clearfell)
  • Flash Grenade - Level 3 Uncut Skill Gem
  • Herald of Ash - Level 4 Uncut Spirit Gem (obtained by defeating the King in the Mists in Freythorn)
  • Gas Grenade - Level 5 Uncut Skill Gem (given by Leitis in Clearfell Encampment after defeating The Executioner)

Single Target:

  • Use Frost Bomb for Exposure
  • Spam your grenades - remember that Explosive Grenade will explode Gas Grenade for hit damage, so you can pre-stack Poison Clouds

Tip: If you have enough Intelligence you can maintain upgrades on Frost Bomb to be able to apply Exposure which will make bossing a bit easier. Don't worry too much if you can't satisfy the requirements to apply Exposure, as you'll be replacing the Skill with Oil Grenade a bit later on.

Clearing:

  • Use Explosive Grenade ahead of your position and run forward to kite chasing enemies into the explosion radius
  • Once you have access to all of your Grenades, you can rotate through them using the kiting method above

REMEMBER TO CONSISTENTLY UPGRADE YOUR GEM LEVELS BY USING HIGHER LEVEL UNCUT SKILL GEMS AS YOU PROGRESS!

IMPORTANT NOTE - STAT REQUIREMENTS:

  • You will need additional Strength to equip Crossbow upgrades beyond the starter weapon. If you do not mange to obtain any gear pieces with + to Strength, you must take an Attribute node branching from the immediate start point on the tree and select Strength.
  • Note that this is only a temporary fix to be able to use a stronger Crossbow - once you've pathed through all of the increased Projectile Damage nodes from the Ranger start area, you'll then be able to begin allocating Strength highway nodes on your way to Blinding Strike. After obtaining enough Strength, remember to speak to The Hooded One to refund the initial node(s) taken above.

FAQ

Q: Why Gas Grenade over Gas Arrow?

A: Gas Grenade has significantly higher effective damage for inflicted poisons (almost 3x).

Q: My chance to hit is low, why no accuracy scaling?

A: Gas Grenade's Poison Cloud bypasses the chance to hit calculation, it does not need Accuracy.

Q: Why no Escalating Poisons Support for extra poison stacks?

A: The support makes it harder to maintain maximum Poison stacks, and scaling damage for the existing stacks is more comfortable.

Q: Does Crit actually work on Gas Grenade's Poison Cloud?

A: Yes, as of 0.3 it does.

Q: Why the Transcendent Life Flask instead of an Ultimate Life Flask?

A: This is purely preference. ATranscendent Life Flask lasts an extra second longer baseline compared to an Ultimate Life Flask, but heals for less. This means less recovery in trade off for pressing the flask button less often.

Thanks boss for a great build and great guide. Looking forward to leaguestarting it in 1.0. Any chance you can provide some aspirational upgrade ideas for 0.5.5? I know there're limited ways to scale DoT damage, so not sure if I should just swap to a different build (i.e. CoC comet) if I want to keep investing in the pathfinder this league.

Ultimate endgame version of this build would essentially be a bit of a different build as it would require 4-5 pieces of equipment being fully replaced on top of passive tree changes, but it's one that uses a pure phys crossbow with snakebite instead of the elemental plaguefinger setup. For 0.5.5 I'd recommend something else like CoC comet as you've mentioned as it has more scalability into deep levels of investment, but I will be providing an ultra-endgame setup for the build in prep for 1.0 at some point!

Hey!I have such notables annointed at level 23 in my passive tree: Overwhelming toxicity + Lasting toxins + Stacking toxins. Basically it sets my poison duration to 70% of base and grants total up to 4 poison stacks so you know what? I barely EVER see enemy on 4 stacks even if i hit them with 3 grenades via multishot. The other interesting thing is, alternating between gas and explosive grenades so i set the posion from gas grenade on fire actually does not overlap the poison stacks you have on enemy(i run short fuse ii on both for the sake of conviniency). SO the question is can you actually gain more damage through that than dealing with curses and stuff? Another thing i would kindly ask you to look into is if annointing into notables such as Frazzled for more consistent shock on enemies actually does meaningful damage increase for da build? Appreciate your work, thanks for the build :)

Hey - not sure why you spec into poison related nodes at level 23, as we don't do the poison swap until end of act 4. The damage scaling from despair and withered combined is vastly superior to exploding the gas clouds, because we don't have any penetration or fire resistance stripping - also exploding the clouds is generally a bad idea because we're fishing for high damage roll + crit gas clouds which then continuously apply high damage poisons. Lastly, sadly we're unable to apply shock due to the gloves!

Would an absent amulet with Endless Rage be good if you socket Tacati's Ire into Gas Grenade? Or even if I just get enough spirit to socket Endless Rage?

I haven't experimented much with a Tacati setup on this build, mostly because I wanted to keep it fairly balanced on offense/defence with use of several spirit buffs to stay alive, but you could test it out, I think it should deal a lot of extra damage if you can afford the spirit cost

Hey dreamcore, thank you so much for the build and will be league starting in 1.0 with this one as well. Have a question about upgrading further. Do you think going Pure Phys or with chaos bow and +2 proj rare gloves will be better or sticking with plaguefinger and getting 4 add ele + phys on ring will? Since all damage can poison can also be solved with rite of passage charm even though it needs to kill rare first.

I think in the ultimate endgame, the highest budget version of GG Pathfinder is going to be pure phys with Snakebite. The reason I haven't updated the build to reflect this is because it's essentially a large enough shift to be another build entirely (need to replace weapon, rings, gloves, some changes to passive tree, jewels etc.). Perhaps I will put together a pure endgame version with this setup in a separate guide, but for now I wanted to keep this guide focused on the elemental setup as I feel it's far superior at progression and right now there's not really enough ultra hard content in the game to warrant going much beyond it - for 1.0 though, probably will be a good idea!

Hi Dreamcore, good stuff as always! Do you happen to have a loot filter link for this build? Campaign and Mapping? Thank you!

I do not, I just use Neversink's Filterblade loadouts for campaign, select ranger and change the weapon type to crossbow. Then you can do the same for endgame and as you progress you can create new filters with the same setup but with higher strictness to stop seeing useless items

hello dreamcore, I have a problem Idk how to fix. Maybe you can help me? I was farming for like 4 days trying to buy Garukhan's Resolve, which I finally did like 30min ago and I always wanted to try it because you recommended it in your guide video, but now when I try to use the support gem, it says: This support can't be socketed into this skill. I'm not sure whats wrong, if you know to fix this please help me out, thanks again

I haven't tried the support in gas grenade before, and on reviewing builds on poe.ninja, I can't find a single one with garukhan's socketed into gas grenade. However, I did a bit more research, and it appears that garukhan's resolve had the line 'cannot support skills which have a cooldown' back in patch 0.4, and this line was removed without notice in 0.5. It seems that the removal of that line was either a mistake, or the functionality of the support hasn't been updated correctly, because it still cannot be used in cooldown skills.

My suggestion was based on the assumption that it would work given that there's nothing on the gem that would suggest otherwise, but unfortunately it appears that it does not work.

You can use headhunter - you will need to replace enduring elixirs with running assault, but note that you'll have weaker recovery (but possibly won't need it due to HH power boost)

Now you don't need to carry a second set of weapons to cast if instead dark effigy you use entangle and toxic domain?

Could you please tell me if your guide will continue to be updated and expanded? I only just started playing using your guide yesterday.

You still use the same weapon swap set for entangle as you did before with dark effigy, it's just a better skill overall for applying critical weakness. I dropped toxic domain entirely because it doesn't contribute much. Guide will continue to be updated!
