Build Overview

SUMMARY:

This build is my league starter of choice for 0.4, "The Last of the Druids," now including mid-endgame and late-endgame variants. The guide will continue to be updated as new information becomes available that enhances the build in some way.

This particular Twister variant is a true Battlemage archetype, specific to the Invoker ascendancy, with numerous synergies between spells and attacks. Check out the video guide for a quick overview on how the build works.

CAMPAIGN REWARDS:

  • Venom Draught: 30% increased Elemental Ailment Threshold
  • Tawhoa's Test: +5 to Dexterity
  • Tasalio's Test: +5 to Intelligence
  • Ngamahu's Test: +5 to Strength
  • Seven Pillars: +15% Global Defences

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • High ceiling for mobility scaling through weapon swap
  • Lots of skills automated through a fairly simple rotation
  • Easy mapping with multi-screen-wide freeze and clear
  • Extremely strong in small arenas like Ritual or the Vaal Temple mechanic
  • Budget-friendly gearing
  • Complex to set up with lots of moving parts
  • Can have issues with mana management
  • Poor bossing DPS in large arenas
  • Unique-heavy gearing

Build Variants

This build variant is specific to Act One progression. It introduces Whirling Slash with Twister, alongside the Fangs of Frost + Parry interaction as a means to create elemental ground for longer fights. It also introduces weapon set point allocation in the passive tree.

CRAFTING GUIDE:

An all-encompassing crafting guide for this build can be found here.

WEAPON SETS:

To assign a weapon to a specific weapon set, open the character gear window, and toggle between weapon one and two. To assign the same weapon to BOTH weapon sets (which is smart early on when your best weapon is both fast and has high damage), right-click the lock symbol in the same place as the toggle option.

STAT PRIORITY:

At the earliest stage of the campaign, gear doesn't matter much. The most important stat is flat damage on the spear, gloves, or rings. Of course, movement speed on boots is great, too. Aside from that, it's maximum life and wherever resistances are offered.

WEAPON SETS:

To assign a skill to a specific weapon set, open the skill window and click the checkbox for the desired weapon set (both are checked by default).

Whirling Slash, Barrage, and Fangs of Frost should be designated to weapon set one, while Twister is designated to weapon set two. All other gems can remain assigned to both.

More on how to assign weapons and passives to their preferred weapon set can be found in their respective sections of the guide.

ROTATION:

The core rotation at the beginning is Whirling Slash > Whirling Slash > Whirling Slash > Twister. When up, Barrage is inserted at the front of the rotation as it becomes usable towards the end of Act One.

While purely optional, on longer fights (boss fights especially), it's optimal to use Parry > Fangs of Frost to force elemental ground for a long duration. This imbues subsequent Twister attacks with more added elemental damage. Several Twister rotations can fit inside this window of opportunity.

SPIRIT GEMS:

Wind Dancer is the first spirit gem to use. Its knockback is a highly functional defensive mechanic while in the campaign.

OTHER:

Whirling Slash should NOT be leveled up. It remains at level one to reduce the mana cost of the skill as much as possible. This is especially important in the later stages of the game.

WEAPON SETS:

Over the course of the completing the campaign, you will be granted up to 24 passive points that can be split between two weapon sets. These points can be assigned to a specific weapon set using the interface in the top right corner of the passive tree window.

This build heavily utilizes these weapon set passive points. Whirling Slash gets designated to weapon set one, focusing on speed. Whereas Twister gets designated to weapon set two, focusing more on damage. These passives are color-coded. Red is weapon set one, and green is weapon set two both in this guide and in-game.

As a general rule, follow the passive priority list and utilize the weapon set points as they become available.

More on how to assign skills and weapons to their preferred weapon set can be found in their respective sections of the guide.

How it Plays

Despite all the interactions between spells and attacks, it still plays like a typical Twister build. A fully-stacked Whirling Slash combined with Twister supported by Salvo and empowered with Barrage creates dozens of large-scale Twisters that shred enemies far and away. Flame Wall and Spark are automated through Cast on Critical, while a second Spark is linked in Elemental Invocation for one added burst damage ability (Early Endgame variant only).
