Monster Hunter WildsChatacabra Guide - Weaknesses, Location, Armor & More

Video Guide

Overview

Chatacabra is one of Monster Hunter Wilds’ newest Monsters. Inspiration is taken from a large frog, evident in its long sticky tongue and overall appearance.

This beginner-friendly, brute-like Monster is one of the first creatures that players will encounter at the start of their Monster Hunter journey. Known for being passive and passing Hunters, it resides in the Windward Plains where its Den is in the underground caverns.

This guide is written by @DerekTheMage.

Locations

Chatacabra can be found in three main locations:

  • Zone 13 (Desert): Often seen drinking from the oasis, sleeping, or eating fish.
  • Zone 8 (Wetlands): May be found hunting prey or passing by via Zone 12.
  • Underground (East of Zone 3): Usually sleeping or retreating to the cave when the fight is nearing its end, as this is where its Den is located.

Environmental Factors

Sandtide Weather Event: During this phenomenon, spikes in Zone 8 and 13 of the Windward Plains attract lightning strikes, dealing massive Damage to those nearby, including Monsters. This can be used strategically during hunts.

Falling Boulders: Found above its Den, these can be used to deal bonus Damage and Stagger if you find them underneath one. Use your Claw or Shoot it with a projectile to trigger one to fall and deal 290~ Damage. There are four of them in the underground section where Chatacabra likes to hang out.

Flashflies: The underground also contains many Flashflies that can be hit with your Slinger or weapons to trigger a flash that will Daze monsters for a few seconds.

Vine Trap: There are hanging vines found in the middle of Zone 8. When triggered it renders any monster caught in it defenseless. Chatacabra likes to sit under one of these trees making it very easy to get a jump on them.

Mechanics to Look Out For

Armor

While in rocky areas, they’ll fortify their arms with stone, empowering their Attacks and Armor. These reinforced limbs are easily broken with direct Damage.

Leap Attack

Its Leap Attack is one to watch out for, easily telegraphed by it angling its body downwards and waving its rear right before the Attack. At this moment you can easily sidestep the Attack or Parry, leaving them open to Damage.

Charge Attack

When using its Charge Attack it uses its tongue to lick the ground as it stomps towards you dealing Damage and knocking you down. It is telegraphed when they lick the ground directly in front of them and wobble in place. This Attack is easily dodged by rolling to either side of them.

Slam Attack

It uses its fist to slam down, dealing direct Damage with a small AOE. Damage is greatest in the center of the AOE and falls off. It is telegraphed when it extends its arm into the air.

Enraged

While Enraged, Slam Attacks will be larger, faster, deal more Damage, and it may use both arms.

Weak Spots to Focus

  • Body Weak Points: Tongue
  • Severable Points: None
  • Breakable Points: Forelegs

Tongue

Their tongue is a reliable Weak spot. It will be temporarily vulnerable to a Focus Attack when they extend it to lick their arms. They will also extend their tongue when using a Bite, Lick, or Charge Attack.

Rear

A vulnerable point is their rear. It is relatively safe to target due to their Attacks being mostly focused forward.

Reinforced Arms

Their arms will become breakable Weak points while reinforced with stone. Once broken they will be Staggered for a few seconds.

Turf Wars

As a relatively beginner-friendly monster, Chatacabra only stands a chance in Turf Wars against Balahara. It can also be seen defending itself against Doshaguma and Rey Dau, though these encounters are rarely in its favor. More often than not, Chatacabra emerges from these battles with a significant loss of health.
