Overview

Polyphemus, the infamous Cyclops from Homer's Odyssey, guards his sheep and sees you as a threat. He may not be as cunning as the other Guardians, but his slow attacks hit hard, and his fast attacks can catch you by surprise.

In this guide, we break down every attack in Polyphemus's arsenal, complete with GIFs showing their startup animations and timing. You’ll learn how to dodge his devastating stomps, and find the best openings to strike back.

You'll learn, as Odysseus did, that it's better to outsmart brute strength with precision and patience. Defeat the Cyclops, and leave him shouting to his allies, "Nobody did this to me!!!"

TLDR Polyphemus Guide

  • If your Weapon has the range, stay farther way from Polyphemus. Most of his attacks have short range
  • All of the red shock waves can safely be Dashed through
  • When you see the summons that throw fire barrels, kill them quickly before they ignite the ground.

Phase 1

Ground Pound

Polyphemus winds up his arm no raises slowly raises his arm up into the air flashes white and then slams his palm down to the ground. The slam creates a small shock wave around his body.

To evade, keep your distance and dash away from the Cyclops when you see him starting this attack.

Leap

Polyphemus performs a quick Bend of the knees as you squats down as he as he prepares to leap Forward.

During the leap if his knees or feet hit you, you'll take damage. Also, whenever he lands he sends out a large slow-moving red Shockwave all around him

To evade both of these attacks, first Dodge sideways when the Cyclops leaps towards you, then Dash back at him through the red Shockwave so you can get in some damage while he prepares his next move.

Snatch & Smother

Polyphemus flash is white and raises both of his arms up into the air hell then suddenly grab down straight in front of him. If you are caught in this he will begin to smother you and you'll keep taking damage until he releases you.

To evade, either Dash away from the Cyclops or Dash through him so that you are behind him when he grabs.

  • Special note: You'll see Polyphemus grabs one of his own sheep in the second half of the GIF. Whenever he does this, he takes self-damage, which is why his Phase 3 invulnerability was triggered.

Shockwave Kick

Polyphemus leans back raises up his right foot and kicks out a fast moving Shockwave.

To to evade, Dash sideways if you are far away or Dash straight through the Shockwave if you are up close.

Walk

Polyphemus slowly marches across the map each step will send out a small circular Shockwave.

To evade, simply stay outside the range of the small red circles.

“I Know You’re Here”

Polyphemus will say a voice line stating that he is looking for you, such as "I know you're here," or "where are you little sheep?"

When when you see him raise his hands up to his ears and lean sideways DO NOT attack him.

As long as you don't damage him directly with your Attack, Special, Cast, or Rush, then he will stop looking after a few moments and continue with his regular attack sequences.

SPOTTED!

If you accidently attacked Polyphemus during "I Know You're Here," then you will see spotted appear on your screen he will grab a boulder out of the ground jump up slam down with the Boulder and send out huge shock waves and all directions.

This move is very difficult to evade so of course we recommend doing your best to not attack him when he's listening for you.

On the unfortunate occasion that you did hit him and you need to dodge SPOTTED!, Sprint away from him when he grabs the boulder and then Dash straight back at him through the shock waves.

Phase 2

Reinforcements

After you trigger Phase 2 by getting Polyphemus down to 75% health, he will periodically summon reinforcements for the remainder of the encounter.

They are not particularly difficult to deal with, but when you see the large Shrek looking Ogres that throw fire barrels, kill them quickly before they ignite the ground.

Phase 3

Cyclops Stomp!

Phase 3 begins when Polyphemus is taken down to 25% health. At this point all his previous moves have increased attack speeds.

Additionally he'll start using his cyclops stomp that sends a ripplling shockwave across the map.

If you are already positioned far away from the Cyclops you might be able to outrun this. However it is generally better to try and time your dash to Dodge straight through the Shockwave as it passes underneath you.
