Gnoster Expedition Raider Build

Intro

Raider is pretty slow, which is a big downside against this boss. His attacks are also slow, which means that this boss’s delayed attacks can punish him pretty heavily. But with correct setups, we can circumvent this quite well! Gnoster is 2 entities: a Butterfly and a Lobster. The Butterfly will keep launching missiles, while the Lobster will have a lot of delayed AOE attacks. Raider can still easily deal a ton of damage and stance break them quite often.

Fire weapons are the biggest priority for this boss because it's the only way to cleanse poisoned allies and deal increased damage to the boss.

Equipment Loadout

Armaments

Best-in-slot

Alternatives

There are a couple of great weapons that deal fire damage, but it’s still a bit limited for the Strength category. That’s why I recommend looking for areas with the Fire modifier. This will guarantee that there will be fire weapons dropped by the boss.

Talismans

Best-in-slot

  • Green Turtle Talisman
  • Claw Talisman
  • Fire Scorpion Charm

For this build specifically, we only recommend running the Claw Talisman since charged attacks take too long, and the Lobster will punish you for it. Getting any stamina Talismans is also highly effective on the Raider.

Alternatives

  • Kindred of Rot's Exultation
  • Erdtree's Favor
  • Dragoncrest Shield Talisman
  • Warrior Jar Shard

Consumables

Best-in-slot

  • Boiled Crab / Boiled Prawn
  • Greenburst Crystal Tear / Greenspill Crystal Tear
  • Pickled Turtle Neck / Exalted Flesh
  • Neutralizing Boluses

Dormant Powers, Passives, and Relics

Dormant Powers

Best-in-slot

  • Improved Physical Attack power
  • Improved Affinity Damage Negation
  • Improved Stance-Breaking
  • Improved Affinity Attack Power

Alternatives

  • Improved Stamina Recovery
  • Raises attacks of magic, fire, lightning, and holy affinities (8%)
  • Improved Physical Damage Negation
  • Increased Maximum Stamina

Relics

Best-in-slot

For the best results, keep the default Raider’s Urn equipped.

Red Relics

Green Relics

Weapon Passives

Best-in-slot

  • Improved Attack Power When Wielding Two (+13%)
  • Improved Damage Negation (Physical or Holy, preferably 15%)
  • Improved Jump Attacks (12%)
  • Dmg Negation Up while Charging Attacks (+40%)

Alternatives

  • Improved Guard Breaking (+60%)
  • Improved Fire Attack Power (12%)
  • Improved Stance-Breaking (10%)

These alternatives are still great! But the top priorities are the best-in-slot ones.

Game Plan and Pathing

Day 1

First thing you want to do is look around the map for which locations have the fire modifier. This will help you get a fire weapon early on, with sometimes a great weapon that you can use until the end of the run. If you found one but prefer a better one, you can always kill Field Bosses on day 2 for the chance at a better weapon.

After you get level 2 at the start of the run, keep clearing Forts, Cathedrals, and Encampments to grind until you have around level 8. This is the point where you can start killing field bosses, so it's the minimum level needed for day 2.

While you go around the map, check if Trolls have spawned in the central castle to make sure you know if you can go there on day 2.

If you cannot find any of the recommended weapons, try to find one of the following categories: Great Hammers, Hammers, Colossal Weapons, Colossal Swords, Curved Greatswords, or Greataxes.

Day 2

Now we want to look at the map. If we had Noklateo or the Crater spawn, we would want to go there immediately since they tend to take a while. If the Mountain or Rot Forrest spawned, we can go there later on the day. If none spawned or you feel you need to get stronger, and Trolls didn’t spawn inside the central castle, you can go there and easily hit level 12-13 from that alone. After this, you can easily do any other content and grind towards that.

Keep in mind that if a Settlement spawned, check it out. These often have a ton of good stuff you can purchase, but you do require quite a few runes to get it.

Day 3

As mentioned before, Gnoster consists of two entities: The Butterfly and the Lobster. These share the boss's HP pool but act independently.  Most of the time, you will be face to face with the lobster, so let's talk about him first.

The lobster mostly has AOE attacks that are heavily delayed to make you dodge before it hits. He has two that hit in front of him, and one that hits when you are to his side.

The Butterfly mostly shoots projectiles and poison mist, do not stay inside there because this is not normal poison. You will also instantly be poisoned if you get hit by the Butterfly’s grab attack. This poison eventually grows a parasite that will hit you and stagger you consistently, ruining your fight most likely. In multiplayer, this can be cleansed by an ally hitting you with fire damage. In singleplayer, this can only be cleansed by dying.

In phase 2, most of the attacks stay the same, but now the Butterfly sits on top of the Lobster. They do have two new attacks: At the start of phase 2 and during it, the Lobster will charge forward a couple of times while the Butterfly shoots projectiles. This attack is extremely dangerous and very hard to dodge, so I recommend springing to the side the moment you see it start. The butterfly can also occasionally spawn a huge laser beam from the air that lingers quite long.

Additional Tips

  • Powerstancing is the best way to deal with Gnoster since charged attacks take too long.
  • Use consumables on bosses, keep stacked up on Neutralizing Boluses for the poison.
  • If you are playing with a party, keep track of your allies in case they get poisoned.
  • Your ultimate is an AOE buff which also works for allies, keep this in mind.
