Build Overview

The Spear of the Heavens Paladin Build Guide teaches you about Gear, Skills, Paragon, Playstyle & Seasonal Mechanics in Diablo 4 Season 12.

Spear of the Heavens is a Judicator Justice Skill that focuses on dealing the most possible damage through procing Judgement. SotH becomes a true menace once you have access to the Unique Ring Seal of the Second Trumpet.

Our main way to deal damage is through Judgement. Judgement is a sub-skill which is applied from various sources, or Reach of the Law Arbiter of Justice or Rite of Judgement Holy Light Aura. It is then further spread by Judgement Day.

Oaths

We run all 3 auras to reduce our Cooldowns constantly through Resplendence.

Reach of the Law Arbiter of Justice and Rite of Judgement Holy Light Aura are all used to apply Judgement.

Judicator Oath boosts our damage whenever we Judge enemies.

Core Items and Requirements

  • Shroud of False Death is a massive damage boost.
  • Heir of Perdition allows us to get rid of Cir + Gar while giving a lot of damage.
  • No Unique is mandatory, however Griswold's Opus and specially Seal of the Second Trumpet are a big priority.
  • Tibault's Will is nice to have, but nothing crazy.

To know where to farm all the Uniques you need for the build make sure to check out the Boss Loot Tables Guide.

Getting multiple great passives on an Amulet can be tricky or expensive. In the How it Works section, you can find a Tier List with all the Affixes you can get on your Amulet.

Bloodied Affixes to chase:

  • S-Tier:
    • Primary Core Stat per KIll Streak (Armor and Shield)
    • Every 25 Kills, gain Berserking for 4 seconds (Weapon)
  • A-Tier:
    • Cooldown Reduction per Killstreak Tier (Armor and Shield)
    • Attack Speed per Killstreak Tier (Armor and Shield) until Attack Speed cap
    • Critical Strike Chance per Killstreak Tier (Armor and Shield) until Critical Strike Chance cap
  • B-Tier:
    • Life on Hit per Killstreak Tier (Armor and Shield)
    • Maximum Life per Killstreak Tier (Armor and Shield)
  • C-Tier:
    • Every 15 Kills, Restore 25% of your Maximum Primary Resource (Armor and Shield)

If you are unfamiliar with Blood Affixes, check out our Season 12 Overview for more information.

Elixirs and Incenses

ElixirElixir of Advantage
Core IncenseAncient Times
Defensive IncenseReddamine Buzz
Resistance IncenseSoothing Spices

It's important to run Elixirs and Incenses at all times. Not only because they increase your Experience gain but also because they provide very strong combat boosts.

We use Elixir of Advantage for Attack Speed and Ancient Times for Strength.

Soothing Spices and Reddamine Buzz makes us tankier.

Mercenary

Raheir with Shield Charge + Raheir's Guard and Provoke + Mocking Lure is used for Armor + Damage but it can also be replaced with Subo, as Armor no longer has uncapped scaling with Castle.

Varyana with Bloodthirst gives us Attack Speed to get more out of Preacher.

How it Plays

  • Ascend into Arbiter of Justice.
    • You need to refresh the buff before it runs out to keep Aspect of Celestial Strife and Aspect of Ascension stacked.
  • Throw down Spear of the Heavens.
  • Apply Judgement to enemies with Reach of the Law and Holy Light Aura.
  • Whenever a Judgement detonates, your Spear of the Heavens Cooldown is reduced through Enhanced Spear of the Heavens.
  • Judgement Day spreads the Judgement to more enemies.
  • Detonate Judgement early with Blessed Hammer.
  • Once enough Judgements detonate, your Spear of the Heavens will have no Cooldown and you can keep spamming it.
  • Use Fanaticism Aura on Cooldown to apply Weakened.
  • Use Holy Light Aura on Cooldown to apply Judgement.

How it Works

Core Mechanics

Damage

Our damage comes from the Judgement sub-skill. More information on the inner workings can be found below. That being said, we increase its damage with powerful multipliers such as Judicator, Judgement Day, Seal of the Second Trumpet, Aspect of the Golden Hour and Aspect of the Judicator. We apply it with Holy Light Aura and Arbiter of Justice Reach of the Law on to our Spear of the HeavensPronouncement of Heaven and detonate it early with Blessed Hammer combined with Judicator.

Judgement Mechanics

  • Judgement is a sub-skill that benefits from Critical Strikes but can not apply Lucky Hits.
  • Judgement Day spreads Judgement to unaffected enemies after detonation, leading to crazy chain-reactions.
  • Judgement's damage is based on % Weapon damage.
  • The following are likely bugs but massively increase Judgements damage:
    • Judicator gives Judgement twice as much damage as stated on the tooltip.

Runes

Early on, useCir + Gar for Critical Strike Chance, once we get Heir of Perdition we can swap this out.

Igni + Thul is used to apply Vulnerable and Crowd Control for Dizzying Blow.

Ahu + Qax is used because it's a massive damage multiplier

Resource Management

Lucky Hit: Chance to Restore Primary Resources is used to sustain our Faith but if you find that's not enough you can get Faith per Second Affixes on gear.

Why are we taking Rite of Might, how are we generating Resolve?

We generate Resolve with the Courage Passive that is granted to us by Shroud of False Death.

Alternatively, on some builds we generate it more consistently with Clash or Fortress.

Where are we getting Fortified from?

  • To count as being Fortified, any amount of Fortification will do.
  • We boost the Fortified amount with some magic nodes on Preacher.
  • Raheir, your mercenary, also provides a bit of Fortify through his ability.
  • Renewal gives Fortify and is provided by Shroud of False Death for free.
