We finally have a major meta shift in Borderlands 4, and you might just find it pretty difficult to pick a favorite between the two.
We finally have a major meta shift in Borderlands 4, and you might just find it pretty difficult to pick a favorite between the two.
After the release of Gearbox's first Bounty Pack, players were given a whole host of new items to play around with in order to prepare for Borderlands 4's first official Story Pack, which releases later this month.
I've already ranked all items in the Bounty Pack, and if you want to check that out you can do so here, however two of the most captivating items to come out of this recent expansion just so happen to be from the same item class type... Pistols.

I'm referring to the
Roulette Order Pistol, and the
Shalashaska Jakobs Pistol. Both of these Pistols have already been praised by many for their raw damage output, and regardless of which one you choose to wield on your enemy/boss killing setups, there really isn't a wrong choice to make here.
In terms of the
Roulette, you can find it from Bore-Tex within the new Bounty Pack 'Legend Of The Stone Demon'
And for the
Shalashaska, unlike the counterpart which is DLC locked, you'll find this powerful Pistol from the new Ordonite Processor World Event, where it can drop from any of the 3 checkpointed elites.
When talking about the power of the
Roulette, it's important to note that it's certainly the easier of the two weapons to obtain, as it's a quick, repeatable farm from Bore-Tex, who can be summoned on demand via the big encore machine at any time, for a 20+% drop chance on UVH6
Which is a relief, too. In order to get the most out of this gun, you'll want to make sure you're getting your hands on two Licensed Parts in particular in order to take it to the next level, which are the Ripper (Charge Mag) and the Jakobs (Ricochet Accessory) - which will turn this gun into a full auto ricochet machine.

The goal of the
Roulette is to reload (or just go guns blazing) hoping for all of the possible 7 Buffs to roll at once, which in turn will send the damage, fire rate, and more through the roof.
If you remember the Torrent from Borderlands 3, it almost gets to that point with the fire rate on the right build, and is so powerful that you can even take the gun to Bloomreaper The Invincible for an extremely speedy kill. While of course the comparison to be made here is to the Lucky 7, the actual perks granted by this gun are more akin to the Sleeping Giant, which relied more on powerful subtlety.
For me personally, the Roulette is my go-to right now. It's a weapon that's extremely easy to farm for, easy to kit out with your choice of enhancement, and it makes quick work of almost every single enemy in the game on the highest of difficulty.
In the case of the
Shalashaska, getting your hands on it will be sliiightly more challenging. Sadly, you cannot simply spawn the bosses required to obtain it on demand, and instead will need to earn your opportunity to get this weapon by proceeding through the Ordonite Processor World Event.
For me personally, the best way to do this is to simply get to the first boss, and then run away to reset the area. You can of course also do all 3 tiers, but I personally have gotten used to the latter.

Now personally for my Amon, the Shalashaska just isn't a gun I personally have found myself taking to, but this absolutely does not for one moment discredit the actual power or achievements it comes with.
The central mechanic is basically an
Anarchy in Pistol form, but instead of gaining flat damage % per reload, it comes with up to 5 extra Ricochets.
From all I've been told, the absolute god roll for this item is to obtain Torgue (Impact Mag) with Daedalus (Underbarrel/Multi-Loader) in Shotgun Mode, for the absolute maximum damage output.
The absolute most fruitful use case also appears to be equipping it on
Harlowe, who seems to be able to do absolutely ridiculous feats with the gun in almost every area in the game, including Bloomreaper.
Ultimately what's better isn't the most important conclusion to draw here. What is however extremely important to know is that regardless of what Pistol you're choosing to wield, you're now in possession of what many are calling the new Pistol Meta in Borderlands 4, if we're excluding stuff like Tediores.
With me personally though, I'll be using the Roulette going forward.
