Elemental Shaman Guide | <Progress> Babyhoof

Overview

Elemental Shaman have received a small number of changes compared to many other specs, and many of them end up being not for the better.

While our cleave and AoE has gotten slightly better through the addition of Fire Nova and the changes to Elemental Mastery, and our ever prevalent mana issues have become far more manageable due to Mindfulness, our single target damage is lacking, and our levelling suffers from a massive reliance on gear to make our spells deal damage.

Elemental Shamans follow a relatively simple rotational loop; Keep Flame Shock applied, press Lava Burst on cooldown, and fill the remaining globals with Lightning Bolt. When more than 1 targets are present, our Chain Lightning ability becomes included, and our wide array of totems, including Searing Totem, Tremor Totem, and Windfury Totem all contribute to our powerful utility.

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Straightforward damage rotation
  • Improved cleave and AoE damage
  • Strong group utility through totems
  • Underwhelming single-target damage
  • Heavy reliance on gear while leveling
  • Spell pushback can disrupt damage when enemies reach you

Guide Variants

Elemental Shaman is one of the weakest levelling specs in the game. I would highly recommend levelling as Enhancement instead - you will have a much more fulfilling experience and ultimately level both faster and with more enjoyment. If you insist upon levelling with a spellcaster based Elemental Build, then your options are below.

Pure Elemental builds suffer heavily while levelling from a lack of talent points. Your sustain is weak, so the easy answer is to rush for Water Shield early to solve your mana issues, but this leaves you without the incredibly important Elemental Alacrity talent to reduce the cast time of your main ability, Lightning Bolt. Rushing either ability also leaves you without @Improved Ghost Wolf, which is a very useful utility talent that will speed up your movement a fair amount. Ultimately, the choice you make is up to you here, but the build I would recommend is below.

  1. Convection 5/5
  2. Elemental Alacrity 3/3
  3. Tidal Focus 5/5
  4. Mindfulness 3/3
  5. Totemic Focus or Improved Healing Wave 2/5
  6. Water Shield
  7. Call of Flame 2/3
  8. Elemental Focus
  9. Call of Flame 3/3
  10. Concussion 3/5
  11. Eye of the Storm 3/3
  12. Earthbound
  13. Concussion 4/5
  14. Lava Burst
  15. Elemental Reach 2/2
  16. Lightning Overload 3/3
  17. Elemental Fury 4/5
  18. Elemental Mastery
  19. Elemental Fury 5/5
  20. Concussion 5/5
  21. Ancestral Knowledge 5/5
  22. Improved Ghost Wolf 2/2

Gameplay & Rotation

Elemental Shaman is a caster with a focus on Single Target Damage, so pulling multiple mobs, especially before you have Eye of the Storm, is a risky business.

Your general rotation while levelling is as follows

  1. Apply Water Shield when out of combat
  2. Apply Flame Shock if it will last the full duration
  3. Cast Lava Burst
  4. Cast Chain Lightning when fighting more than 1 target.
  5. Cast Lightning Bolt

When fighting multiple mobs, such as in a dungeon or when grouped up, you can use your Magma Totem and Fire Nova abilities to deal significant damage in AoE. Be warned that this is a massive mana drain.

When in a group, make sure you are utilizing your group buff totems; Totems such as Strength of Earth Totem, Windfury Totem, and Earthbind Totem are all incredibly powerful for boosting your allies DPS and providing essential utility, even if you don't benefit directly from them.

When playing Elemental focused builds, one of the major advantages is that you can easily heal group content - you will be wearing spellpower and Intellect gear anyway, so take advantage of your flexibility and use it to heal dungeons, elite quests, etc.

Gear

One of the facts that makes Elemental such an incredibly poor levelling spec is its massive reliance on gear. The base damage on our primary DPS spells is so low that we absolutely must secure vital pieces of spellpower gear for ourselves - not doing so will make your levelling incredibly slow and cumbersome. It is advised to put time and money into the class if you are insistent on levelling this way, and to spec enhancement if you are unwilling to ensure your gear is kept up to scratch.

The main source of good spellpower gear will come from dungeons. This is a bit of a Catch-22, however; In order to level effectively we must do dungeons, which past the first run with quests is incredibly inefficient to level in; This means that doing dungeons ends up being both the fastest and slowest way to level. As such, utilizing powerful quest rewards from these dungeon runs is the most important part of your dungeon experience - Running a dungeon more than once is almost always not worth it except in certain circumstances.

Below are a variety of strong quest rewards and Dungeon drops that are available for Elemental Shamans.

Horde - Ragefire Chasm Quest - Staff of Orgrimmar

Alliance - Hall of Thanes Drop - Fang of Magmatus

Horde - Wailing Caverns Quest - Crescent Staff

Both - Ruins of Lordaeron Drop - Scepter of the Abandoned

Both - Blackfathom Deeps Drop - Rod of the Sleepwalker

Both - Gnomeregan Drop - Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator

Stat Priority

Primary Stats

With the increased amount of spellpower on gear, as well as the reduced base damage of our spells, our priority has changed slightly from WoW Classic

  1. Spell Power
  2. Intellect
  3. Stamina
  4. Spirit

While Spirit helps us sustain through natural regen and Mindfulness, we are a class that can struggle in bad situations - having more stamina lets us potentially get an extra heal off, saving us when a fight goes badly.

Consumables

General Consumables

The most important consumable for Elemental Shaman is, surprisingly, drinking water. Keeping your mana filled up is incredibly important as every action you take, with the exception of auto attacking, costs mana. While Mindfulness and Water Shield help, they are not enough to constantly keep us at full mana, and so drinking water becomes a vital tool for any elemental shamans.

Food buffs are also extremely important. Not only do they provide powerful stat buffs, but they also give us a heavy amount of bonus experience - every Well Fed buff comes with an additional bonus of 5% Experience gained from kills. While you want to keep your Well Fed buff filled with strong spellpower food such as Smoked Sagefish, any food buff is acceptable as long as it has enough uptime.

As with every class, make sure you have Healing and Mana potions in your inventory - these can save you in a bad situation, or help you take down difficult enemies like elites or mini bosses.

Damage Consumables

WoW Forever introduced a number of lower level Spell Power consumes, all of which are essential for early game levelling as Elemental Shaman. These include, but are not limited to

  • Minor Arcane Elixir
  • Minor Wizard Oil
  • Minor Mageblood Elixir
  • Elixir of Wisdom

All of these also have better variants, but these are a minimum for levelling as Elemental.

Professions

Skinning and Leatherworking are a powerful combination while levelling - Skinning is easy to maintain and use due to its reliance solely on killing mobs, while Leatherworking can put the materials gained to good use crafting some strong early gear. If you aren't willing to make time to create this gear, then the skins can be sold either on the auction house or simply to a vendor, giving you some much needed cash early on. In addition, Leatherworking provides the very powerful Camp Tent camp buff, which is your buff of choice when levelling solo.

On top of all of this, Leatherworking contains multiple powerful pieces of gear while levelling that possess Spellpower, an incredibly important stat for Elemental. If you are unwilling to buy these pieces off the Auction House, making them yourself is also a viable option. I would heavily advise using your leather gained from Skinning to create these items.

Cooking lets you make your own campfires, and is an important tool to have - not only does it allow you to use powerful buffs such as Camp Tent or Camp Chair from your main professions, but it can also be required for some niche quests on your levelling journey.

Suggested Races

Alliance

Dwarf

Dwarf Sits slightly behind Orc, with scaling potential from its critical damage racial. Critical damage is an incredibly rare stat that scales multiplicatively with Elemental Fury.

Horde

Skyborne

Windshaper Skyborne is the best option for Elemental Shaman, mainly thanks to the passive haste from Wind Blessed. Elemental Insight provides additional damage against Elemental enemies, which appear frequently in endgame content. Walk on Air and Skysight provide additional utility.

Orc

The next best option, only a couple of DPS behind Windshaper Skyborne. Blood Fury and Savage both provide powerful damage bonuses.

Tauren

Tauren Sits slightly behind Orc, with scaling potential from its critical damage racial. Critical damage is an incredibly rare stat that scales multiplicatively with Elemental Fury.

Additional Information

Elemental Shaman also received some minor updates to the talent tree. Lava Burst is a returning old favourite ability, and Elemental Mastery has had its effects changed from a guaranteed critical strike on your next spell to reducing the cast time and cooldowns of our primary abilities.
