How to Play Yordle — TFT Set 16: Lore & Legends

Set 16 brings back a fan favorite - Yordle! This is a different take from previous Yordle iterations where Yordles gain health and attack speed for each Yordle fielded, including an additional bonus when 3-star Yordles are fielded.

This makes Yordles a rerollable composition which is always a favorite of players - especially new players who are learning the game. This composition has several low cost units, so players will need to stay low level to 3-star all their Yordles to get lots of buffs!

This guide was written by Silverfuse.

How TFT Yordle Works

Yordle Trait Bonus

yordle trait

  • (2) Yordles gain 50 Health and 7% Attack Speed for each Yordle fielded. 3 star Yordles grant 50% more!
  • (4) AND your first shop each round has a Yordle in it!
  • (6) AND get 2 free rerolls each round!
  • (8) AND get a Yordle Grab Bag each round!

Yordle Champions and Synergy

Yordle has Arcanist, Longshot, and Defender natural synergies, but multiple more splash potential due to additional traits:

  • Rumble (1G) - Defender
  • Lulu (1G) - Arcanist
  • Poppy (2G) - Demacia + Juggernaut
  • Tristana (2G) - Gunslinger
  • Teemo (2G) - Longshot
  • Kennen (3G) - Ionia & Defender
  • Kobuko & Yuumi (3G) - Bruiser & Invoker
  • Veigar (4G) - Arcanist
  • Fizz (4G) - Bilgewater
  • Ziggs (5G) - Zaun + Longshot

The Yordle Trait

This is a full reroll Yordle composition. First, you will stay low level and not level until 3-1 where you roll down to 35 gold while grabbing Rumbles and Lulus in search of three starring them.

If you are too far away from three starring them, because you need so much gold to hit all your 3-star units, you can stay above 50 gold and slow roll until you have your 3 stars 1-costs and then level up to 6 and start working on getting 3-star Tristana and Teemo. If you are lucky, maybe you hit a Veigar at level 6 as well!

You will want to get 6 Yordles in as soon as you can so you can start accumulating 2 free rerolls each round! The final 8 Piece is Yordles gain a grab bag, but that is a secret you will have to find out yourself!

You may also want to level to 8 to get your Yordle Grab Bags going and add Veigar, Fizz, and Ziggs to your board as well. There are a lot of ways to play Yordles, and it will likely take some time for players to optimize the best way.

TFT Yordle Champions

Rumble (1G) - Defender

tft set 16 rumble

[Link to Champion Page]

Rumble is a Defender and will be the main tank of the Yordle composition. His ability Junkyard Titan permits him to gain (AP) Shield for 4 seconds. He then fires a burst of flames dealing (armor) magic damage in a cone.

It is important to note that his magic damage scales off of armor, so stacking on armor benefits him in his defenses as well as his damage!

Lulu (1G) - Arcanist

tft set 16 lulu

[Link to Champion Page]

Lulu is an Arcanist who pairs with the other Arcanist, Veigar. Lulu’s ability Whimsy deals (AP) magic damage to the target and makes them dance for 2 seconds.

The projectile then bounces to the nearest target, dealing (AP) magic damage! This will make her one of the early and mid game carries for this comp as you work on starring up your 2 cost units.

Poppy (2G) - Demacia + Juggernaut

tft set 16 poppy

[Link to Champion Page]

Poppy is a 2 cost unit with Hammer SHock as an ability. She gains (AP) shield for 4 seconds and deals (AD) physical damage to a target. After a delay she briefly knocks them up and deals damage to them again.

Bucklers fly out from the target, granting 2 nearby allies a shield. Bucklers are a signature piece of Poppy’s kit, so I like how they became part of your TFT kit as well as what almost feels like a little bonus when she is doing damage and shielding herself already as well!

Tristana (2G) - Gunslinger

tft set 16 tristana

[Link to Champion Page]

Tristana is a Gunslinger with her Buster Shot ability. She fires a massive cannonball at the closest enemy, dealing (AD & AP) physical damage. If they are within 2 hexes, knock them back 2 hexes and briefly stun them.

This is similar to Tristana’s we have seen in the past and she has been strong each time. She will likely become the carry of this composition with another Gunslinger in this composition.

Teemo (2G) - Longshot

tft set 16 teemo

[Link to Champion Page]

Teemo is a Longshot unit at 2 gold. His ability, Toxic Dart, is a dot ability meaning that he will shoot the closest unpoisoned enemy - applying a position dot onto the enemies dealing (AP) magic damage and poisoning them for 8 seconds.

Poisoned enemies take additional (AP) magic damage each second. If you played Malazahar last set, Teemo functions similarly to him where he is all about applying position to enemies.

This means that Teemo is a strong anti heal and debuff applier such as Void Staff since he spreads it out easily with the fact that he targets unpoisoned enemies and poison sticks around for 8 seconds.

Kennen (3G) - Ionia & Defender

tft set 16 kennen

[Link to Champion Page]

Kennen is a Ionia and Defender on top of Yordle. He is 3 gold with the ability Slicing Maelstrom. With this ability, he gains (AP) shield and summons a storm of lightning - 6 waves of bolts hit enemies within, dealing (AP) magic damage over 3 seconds.

The first 3 targets to be struck by 3 bolts are stunned for 1.5 seconds. Multiple stuns on the same enemy have less effectiveness. Stuns, especially in the late game, are always good.

As well as Kennen offering your Yordles additional front line, you will always want Kennen in your Yordle comps due to his utility as well as tankiness he gets from his shield.

Kobuko & Yuumi (3G) - Bruiser & Invoker

tft set 16 kobuko & yuumi

[Link to Champion Page]

Kobuko and Yuumi have the ability You & Me which has a passive and an active ability. The passive ability is Yuumi joins your strongest Kobuko.

Every 3 seconds, she alternates between healing the lowest health ally for (AP) health or granting attack speed to teh ally who has dealt the most damage for 4 seconds. The active is dance, restoring (Health & AP) health over 3 seconds.

Fizz (4G) - Bilgewater

tft set 16 fizz

[Link to Champion Page]

Fizz is a champion that must be unlocked by either fielding 5 Yordles or Bilgewater units while being at least level 7. His ability: Playful Trickster is going to be annoying as he is untargetable most of the time - kind of similar to how he is in League of Legends.

He jumps to the farthest enemy within 4 hexes dealing (AP) magic damage to adjacent enemies and for the next 4 attacks he gains attack speed and deals (AP) bonus magic damage.

This will make him a strong unit in Yordles just because he has access to the backline carries which is often strong.

Veigar (4G) - Arcanist

tft set 16 veigar

[Link to Champion Page]

Veigar is the highest cost Yordle that has the ability Dark Storm while being an Arcanist who pairs with Lulu. The Dark Storm has a passive and an active ability. The passive is gain additional ability power from all sources. The active is to call down a storm of 12/12/24 meteors across the battlefield that deal (AP) magic damage each. They can innately critically strike. For each one that kills an enemy, permanently gain 1 Ability Power.

It is important to note that you don’t need to build a Jeweled Gauntlet or critical strike items on Veigar as his ability already critically strikes. The permanent ability power stacking means that finding him early and itemizing him is important. There may be some Yordle comps that reroll the 1 cost Yordles only in order to get Rumble 3 starred as a Defender and then move up to 6 Yordle with Veigar to start getting him stacks as well as free rerolls!

Ziggs (5G) - Zaun + Longshot

tft set 16 ziggs

[Link to Champion Page]

Ziggs is the way to cap out a Yordle board as his very expensive 160 mana Mega Inferno bomb is ready to finish the job. Zigg’s passive is his attacks become bombs that bounce 1 time dealing (AD & AP) magic damage to units hit.

His active is he throws a giant bomb at the largest 4-hex group of enemies that explodes on impact dealing (AP) magic damage to enemies hit based on their distance from the epicenter. This makes Ziggs the perfect clean up crew for your Yordle composition.

Yordles will be a lot of fun for players as free rerolls every round is always fun! As well as, Veigar having permanent stacking ability makes finding an early Veigar exciting for Yordles as well as Arcanists.
