How to Play Ixtal — TFT Set 16: Lore & Legends

Ixtal is the economy and loot trait of this set that lets you choose and complete quests in order to earn Sunshards and spend for loot! This makes it kind of similar to Bilgewater who also lets you cash in currency for loot.

The difference is Bilgewater is based on kills while this is based on completing quests. A unique part of this trait is that at 5 Ixtal units you also start healing player health.

In the past, this healing has been incredibly strong as it allows you to keep farming loot while not taking too much damage.

This guide was written by Silverfuse.

How TFT Ixtal Works

Ixtal Trait Bonus

ixtal trait

  • (3) Complete Quests to earn Sunshards and spend them for loot!
  • (5) Heal 2 player health at the start of each player combat.
  • (7) After winning combat, find 50 Sunshards and unearth bonus loot.

Completing a Quest grants you a new one at the start of the next round.

Ixtal Champions and Synergy

Ixtal has Invoker as a natural synergy in it with plenty more options due to being a large vertical trait:

  • Qiyana (1G) - Slayer
  • Neeko (2G) - Arcanist & Defender
  • Milio (3G) - Invoker
  • Skarner (4G) - Only Ixtal
  • Nidalee (4G) - Huntress
  • Brock (7G) - Only Ixtal

The Itxal Trait

Players can choose a quest such as “Kill a certain number of enemies.” or “Have no items on your bench for a number of rounds.” to earn Sunshards which can be traded in for loot!

I love the idea of having a quest system and the ability to take risks to get Sunshards in order to get bonus loot! This seems like a really fun economy trait for this set!

TFT Ixtal Champions

Qiyana (1G) - Slayer

tft set 16 qiyana

Qiyana has the ability CLear the Brush for 30 mana where she dashes to a nearby hex and swings forward, dealing (AD & AP) physical damage to enemies in a 2-hex line. She does not offer an utility and just raw damage, so in the early game you will want to use Qiyana to kill off units!

Neeko (2G) - Arcanist & Defender

tft set 16 neeko

[Link to Champion Page]

Neeko has some fantastic tags - Arcanist and Defender. Her ability Pop Blossom is fantastic as well. It makes Neeko leap at a target and gain (AP) shield for 4 seconds. She slams down after a brief delay and deals (AP) magic damage to enemies within two hexes and 20% chilling them for 3 seconds.

This chill effect is quite strong in early as well as late game, so expect Neeko to be a unit that is potentially played even after cashing out Sunshards as the Defender trait is also solid.

Milio (3G) - Invoker

tft set 16 milio

[Link to Champion Page]

Milio is an Invoker which is good in the late game. He has the ability Ultra Mega Fire Kick for 60 mana where he launches a fuemigo at a target that bounces 3 times, dealing (AP) magic damage to enemies hit.

The last bounce deals (AP) magic damage to enemies in a 1 hex radius. He is pure damage for ability power, so use him as a way to clean up units and be an Ability power carry in the mid game.

Skarner (4G) - Only Ixtal

tft set 16 skarner

[Link to Champion Page]

Skarner is only Ixtali with no additional traits. However, he has the passive of: all allies gain 10/20/100 armor making him a strong utility unit. His ability Impale has an active of gain (AP) shield for 4 seconds. Impale up to 3 nearby enemies in a line dealing (Armor) physical damage and stunning them for 2/2.25/8 seconds.

This is a great ability as stunning multiple units has a lot of strength in it, so it makes sense why he is a 4 cost unit that at some times might be splashed into random compositions outside of Ixtal due to his ability and passive.

Nidalee (4G) - Huntress

tft set 16 nidalee

[Link to Champion Page]

Nidalee requires you to unlock her by fielding two 2-star Neekos in combat together. This means that if you are looking for big Ixtal cashouts, then you need to be holding onto all the Neekos you see. This also means in order to get 5 Ixtal you need to have unlocked Nidalee and 5 Ixtal is an important break point as you start healing up while completing your quests.

Nidalee has a unique trait - Huntress. Huntress is incredible as it says while your strongest Neeko is alive, your strongest Nidalee is untargetable meaning that she cannot take direct damage from a unit’s auto attacks or abilities, however she can take splash damage from abilities, so be mindful that she is not completely unkillable for that reason.

Nidalee has her own ability, Relentless Pounce where she jumps on an adjacent enemy with the lowest health then deals (AP) magic damage to them and (AP) magic damage to adjacent enemies. If any die, she casts it again. On top of this, tanks take additional damage from this ability and fighters take additional damage as well, making her the true Huntress of Set 16.

Brock (7G) - Only Ixtal

tft set 16 brock

[Link to Champion Page]

Brock is an unlockable champ by collecting 500 Ixtal Sunshards as well as at a steep price of 7 gold per a Brock. He only has the Ixtal trait because he has something even more powerful in his passive ability of Seismic Slam. His passive is that he is immune to crowd control effects.

His attacks also briefly knock up the target and deal damage in a 1 hex radius around them. Brock not being able to be crowd controlled means he doesn’t need to worry about building a titans or Quicksilver in order to function since you do not need to worry about him being crowd controlled to death.

Seismic Slam’s active is he slams the ground, dealing (Health & AD) physical damage to all enemies, reduced by a percent of each hex from the center. If this is the first time they have been hit by Seismic Slam this combat, knock them up for 1.75 seconds. Twelve rocks fall around the battlefield dealing (AD & AP) physical damage to enemies hit.

This stun to the whole board for 1.75 seconds is crazy. Brock really is worth the 7 gold and 500 Sunshards as this unit’s kit seems incredibly strong and definitely worth it if you can get him there!

I am so excited to try this new loot trait, and I am sure most of the playerbase is too as quests and loot are two things that players love to explore. I can’t wait to try it!
