How to Play Freljord — TFT Set 16: Lore & Legends

Freljord’s cold, mountainous region of Runeterra brings some fan favorites, Braum, Ashe, Lissandra, and Sejuani for instance. And of course the 5 cost frost bear Volibear to top it off! Freljord is interesting as there are towers that spawn for each increment.

At 3, a Freljord Tower that gives your team Health when it is in front of the tower while the units behind tower get damage amp. At 5, you get an additional tower plus additional health and damage amp. This seems like it would fall off quite hard in the late game, so you will want to reach for the final increment, 7 Freljord which causes your towers to stun enemies on death for 1.5 seconds on top of additional health and damage amp.

In the past, having towers like these then stun units on death has been quite strong as 1.5 seconds is often long enough for your units to gun down the stunned units. I expected 7 Freljord to often be a staple build especially as there are only 7 Freljord champions and it requires a 5 cost in order to activate 7.

It is also important to note that having a Freljord Spatula will either allow you to hit the 7 Freljord without the 5 cost Braum or if you do hit the Braum then you may cut either a lower cost Freljord unit. I expect it to be Ashe as the cut as she is a backliner and Trayndemere offers more front line, but it would change based on what units are splashed into the Freljord trait.

How TFT Freljord Works

Freljord Trait Bonus

freljord trait

Summon a Frozen Tower. Allies in front of it gain Health and allies behind it gain Damage Amp.

Freljordians gain 150% more.

  • (3) 8% Health, 10% DA
  • (5) Two Towers. 12% Health, 16% DA
  • (7) Towers stun enemies on death for 1.50 seconds. 16% Health, 22% DA.

Freljord Champions and Synergy

Freljord has Invoker as a natural synergy in it with plenty more options due to being a large vertical trait:

  • Anivia (1G) - Invoker
  • Tryndamere (2G) - Slayer
  • Ashe (2G) - Quickstriker
  • Sejuani (3G) - Defender
  • Lissandra (4G) - Invoker
  • Braum (4G) - Warden
  • Volibear (5G) - Bruiser

The Freljord Trait

It is important to note that the towers have health as well, so this makes 3 frejord extremely strong in the early game as it is like having an extra half unit that gives your team health and damage amp! This will also likely make it a 3 unit splash in some late game boards! An example might be Braum, Lissandra, and Volibear as top end quality units mixed with other high end units.

The value that comes from the tower is very strong, and Lissandra has Invoker which is a great splash into late game boards along with Volibear giving the board Bruiser.

TFT Freljord Champions

Anivia (1G) - Invoker

tft set 16 anivia

[Link to Champion Page]

Anivia is an Invoker with the ability Frostbite. She shoots an ice shard at a target. The ice shard deals (AP) magic damage. If they are chilled the damage critically strikes.

Due to this bonus ability, when they are chilled the damage critically strikes, then Anivia will not need to make a Jeweled Gauntlet since she will already critically strike! Anivia will often end up on late game Freljord boards due to her Invoker synergy easily trying with Lissandra’s Invoker synergy.

Tryndamere (2G) - Slayer

tft set 16 tryndamere

[Link to Champion Page]

Tryndamere is a 2 gold unit who has the ability Undying Rage. He becomes enraged for 5 seconds and while enraged he gains (AP) durability and attacks are replaced with a strike that deals (AD) physical damage. He ignores a percent of armor against chilled enemies making it possible to avoid building Last Whisper on him and go for raw damage instead.

Tryndamere also benefits from Ashe being on the board through Bloodsword Bond. Your strongest copies permanently increase in their power on kill. This makes Ashe and Tryndamere a reroll option in Freljord.

Ashe (2G) - Quickstriker

tft set 16 ashe

[Link to Champion Page]

Ashe is a Quickstriker who has the ability True Ice Arrow for 60 mana. She fires an arrow at a target that deals (AD & AP) physical damage to them and (AD & AP) damage to adjacent enemies. Targets below a certain max health take true damage instead. She 30% chills all enemies hit for 3 seconds.

Ashe applying chill to units will be part of the engine for Freljord as multiple units need chill to get their bonus ability such as Tryndamere ignoring armor or Anivia critically striking.

Ashe also has unique benefits when Tryndamere is on the board through Bloodsword Bond. When Ashe attacks with Tryndamere on the board, the strongest Ashe fires a bonus arrow for every 0.05% Attack Damage granted to Tryndamere by Bloodsword bond. These arrows deal 0.07% physical damage!

With both Ashe and Tryndamere being 2 cost Freljord units, expect them to be rerolled together to 3 star in some team compositions!

Sejuani (3G) - Defender

tft set 16 sejuani

[Link to Champion Page]

Sejuani is the only 3 gold unit of the Freljord and she is also a tank. This makes it possible that she may be rerolled with Ashe and Tryndamere at times. Her ability, Winter’s Wrath, gives her (AP) shield for 4 seconds, and she strikes in a cone and a line. Enemies hit by the strike take (AP) magic damage and are chilled for 4 seconds. If they are already chilled, stun them for 1 second.

Sejuani’s ability is insane as she can chill as well as stun units. This will make her positioning critical as being able to hit already chilled units to stun them up will do a lot of this comp. Overall, the Freljord composition will have a lot of crowd control between Sejuani, towers dying, and Lissandra’s ability which we will go to next!

Lissandra (4G) - Invoker

tft set 16 lissandra

[Link to Champion Page]

Lissandra is one of two 4 cost units in the Freljord. She is also an Invoker which pairs nicely with Anivia. Her ability Frozen Tomb encases a target in ice, stunning them for 1.5 seconds and dealing (AP) magic damage.

All enemies within 2 hexes of them split (AP) magic damage. If the target dies, shards fly out and split excess damage between the two nearest enemies. Chilled enemies also take additional damage from Frozen Tomb!

Braum (4G) - Warden

tft set 16 braum

[Link to Champion Page]

Braum is a Warden with the ability Unbreakable Frost. With his ability, he raises his shield for 4 seconds, gaining (AP) Durability and redirecting projectiles towards Braum instead. When hit, he deals (Armor & AP) magic damage to nearby enemies and 30% chills them for 2 seconds.

Braum is an easy way to apply chill to a lot of units at one time as he essentially deflects and gives enemies chills. He will be on Freljord most boards due to this ability and the Warden effect.

Volibear (5G) - Bruiser

tft set 16 volibear

[Link to Champion Page]

To cap off Freljord, we have the final unit at 5 gold - Volibear! Volibear is a Bruiser which pairs nicely with a variety of bruisers.

Volibear’s ability is a 20 mana Relentless Storm which he bites a target and marks them, dealing (AD & Health) physical damage, increased by 0.6% if they are already marked.

After casting 5 times, he leaps to a nearby hex, activating Stormbringer and dealing (Health & AD) physical damage to enemies within a two hex radius. Stormbringer gains Health and Attack speed with every 2 seconds summoning a lightning bolt on a nearby enemy and dealing (Health & AP) magic damage. Takedowns summon a bolt on fallen enemies!

Volibear is loaded with a lot of damage! Something interesting is that he requires 5 casts to get his Stormbringer going which means we might even see a mana item on him.

It is also possible that he ends up being full tank with some utility such as a bloodthirster for healing to ensure he stays alive long enough to get his Stormbringer going and he scales off of health and attack damage. Full attack damage could also be possible depending on his scaling.

There will likely be a few different ways to build Volibear that players will have to experiment with!
