Slay the Spire thrives at finding unique ways to torment the player, and with the introduction of the Afflictions mechanic, they're taking it to a whole new level.
We've only seen teasers of the mechanic thus far, but check back soon for more details!
How Afflictions Work
Afflictions are negative modifiers that can apply directly to your cards. In the example below, we can see that each of the five cards now causes the player to lose one Energy when played.
In a sense, this would make them feel as if they cost one more. However, it should be possible to work around the debuff by simply playing it as your last card for the turn.
An effect as strong as this is will likely be temporary (reverting after combat), but for all we know there could be permanent or long-term Afflictions as well.
Which Enemies Cause Afflictions?
Right now, it's not clear which enemies can cause Afflictions, but we can take a guess based on a quote and screenshot from the April 2025 Neowsletter.
"A creature that wants you dead will “Afflict” some of your cards in all sorts of mean ways."
Looking at the enemy health bar we can see at least 208 HP, which is definitely on the higher end in terms of Encounters. It's possible the mechanic is only (or mostly) present in Boss and Elite fights.
