Path of Building Code

Build Overview

Update for 3.28 --> Energy Blade was nerfed hard along with INT stacking for Energy Shield altogether. Suggest ignoring this build until we get more information.

About this Build

This archetype has become very popular in recent seasons, and because you can run it with almost any spell, we'll just call it EB Inquisitor ( Energy Blade Inquisitor).

I was introduced to this build by OneManaLeft. CaptainLance also has very popular guides and POBs for various approaches.

How does it Work (in General)

We stack energy shield, we convert it to damage with Energy Blade, we further stack that damage with spell damage via Spellblade Support. ... And honestly that's about it; that's the core of the build -- the spine.

What you do from here has many paths / creative choices. I'm not going to outline all the options, but will generally say that there are Cast on Crit versions (CoC), there are Self-Cast versions (like the one I will outline here), and there are mine / trigger-based versions.

How will this Self-Cast Version Work

The approach in this guide is "Self-Cast". We will be using Frostblink of Wintry Blast for virtually all movement (and for a lot of the clear). When we aren't blinking, we use Incinerate of Venting for massive single-target and fairly consistent AOE clear. The incinerate approach is the most "hands on"; no part of this archetype does things on its own.

This guide will eventually feature a slightly adjusted version for DELVE and content like Delve (where you don't have to move much and you need AOE). The Delve variant will focus on Voltaxic Burst, AOE scaling, and mana sustain.

How to Use this Guide

The BULK of the guide is a step-wise progression for getting through early mapping and the campaign. The approach here is VERY new player friendly. You will take your TEMPLAR starter, and use Wands, Projectiles, and Totems for the campaign + mapping progression. Once your gear is assembled for a swap, you will make a HARD pivot over to Energy Blade, Incinerate, and Frostblink of Wintry Blast.

It is worth noting that the campaign archetype does not really "scale" into the endgame archetype. They are very different. The campaign build is SIMPLE, new player friendly, and HIGH QoL (quality of life) --> dropping totems and right-clicking for easy full clear.

There are many guides which will give you a clean progression, starting with Rolling Magma, growing into actually using Energy Blade in A3/A4, and actually scaling into the end game gradually.

Campaign Guide

I made a 10-act campaign guide you can follow if you are new. Act 1 starts here --> https://mobalytics.gg/poe/guides/campaign-act-1

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Incredible flexibility in skill gem selection / playstyle
  • Massive single target DPS
  • Nearly unkillable in end game setup
  • MH Weapon is free via Energy Blade
  • Self-cast is high demand (no auto-killing, you have to tell the build what to kill)
  • Slow scaling in maps

Build Variants

Variant: Level 1-10 (Prior to Merveil A1 Boss Fight)

Important Details:

Involves starting a ranger to Submerged Passage for Momentum Support, Sniper's Mark, and an additional Quicksilver Flask.

Gem links are in priority order. Combustion Support is the least important third link on Rolling Magma.

CAP YOUR GREEN GEM LEVELS (so you don't have Dexterity issues later):

Sniper's Mark == Level 4

Momentum Support == Level 10

STOP Clarity at Level 5 and don't change it.

I. The Mule - (Roll a Ranger First)

Roll a Ranger, grab Caustic Arrow at town, and grab an Iron Ring from Nessa.

Go finish the first two relevant quests ("Breaking Some Eggs", which is the Rhoa quest in the Mud Flats is required, and then "Mercy Mission", which is grabbing the Medicine Chest on Tidal Island).

After finishing these quests, come to town and drop all of these things in your stash to transfer over to your Templar:

1 - You get Sniper's Mark as a quest reward from Tarkleigh which Old Man does not get access to for a long time and really helps beefy boys

2 - Make sure to bring over your Momentum Support (acquired for free from the beach) for our Shield Charge, which again Old Man doesn't get until A3

3 - If you finished Mercy Mission you also get an additional Quicksilver Flask, which is great because the Old Man is slow AF

Sell all your gear and drop the currency as well, with EVERYTHING in your stash, go back to Character Selection and create your Templar (you are done with the Ranger).

** This process takes about 5-10 minutes and makes the next 2 hours MUCH better and potentially saves that time back + some if you do it right.

II. Now Roll The Old Man

Okay now we're ready to roll the templar, grab all the muled gear, and fly.

By the time you get to Level 4, you are decked out with:
Rolling Magma + Elemental Proliferation Support
Holy Flame Totem + Summon Phantasm Support
Shield Charge + Momentum Support

You also have Frostblink, Flame Wall, and Sniper's Mark

If you did everything right you also have: 2x Quicksilver Flask

Old man is ready to rock
