Build Overview

About this Build

Shield Crush

This is an age-old archetype of POE1 that revolves around a single skill: Shield Crush. The skill converts the defensive stats on your shield into flat damage.

Why Play this Build

The archetype is famous because it is ideal for DEEP DELVE content.

I find it fantastic for league start because:

  • From Level 10 on it CRUSHES campaign.
  • It does not slough off in early/mid-mapping on Day 1 (like many builds do with item dependencies).
  • It is not WEAPON stat dependent at all.
  • It is beautifully tanky (if you are a decent player, you simply will not die).
  • It has no end game content limitations.

How to Use this Guide

The BULK of this guide is a step-wise progression for campaign and mapping. This is a fairly standardized template I've used for many runs with success, and I've dedicated a lot of time to carefully outlining the progression for you (with the assumption that you are new to the build and maybe new to POE1 overall).

As I scale the endgame in 3.28, I will add end game variants that are specific to different content, with a special nod to DEEP DELVE, and to T16.5 Nightmare Map boss farming. Both of these content types will be lucrative this season.

Regex

I've provided a very CAREFULLY curated REGEX for Acts 1,2,3 and 6 (gem swap). Note the descriptions of each so you understand how it works.

Regex for Act 1:

    • Show various red+green links and movement speed
    • Highlights any potential shield, you have to manually check stats
    • Keep in mind that you always need a blue socket for Frostblink:

r-r-r|g-g-r|g-r-g|r-g-g|g-r|r-g|Runn|rint|Tower|Round

Regex for Act 2:

    • Shows 3-link Red/Green variations (does not show 2-link anymore)
    • Highlights potential shields still
    • Highlights any 4-link
    • Keep in mind that you always need a blue socket for Frostblink:

-\w-.-|r-r-r|g-g-r|g-r-g|r-g-g|Runn|rint|Tower|Round

Regex for Act 6 (big gem swap):

    • Adds various green and blue links for gem flexibility
    • Highlights any 4-link or 5-link
    • Displays shields for you to manually check

-\w-.-|(-\w){4}|g-g-[rb]|g-[rb]-g|[rb]-g-g|r-r-b|r-[rb]-r|b-r-r|Runn|rint|Tower|Round

Loot Filter

The loot filter is VERY specific to the progression for this build. It highlights and plays sounds for ALL shields you should check. And it will also begin hiding shields when you get to an area level of a higher tier shield you care about.

Campaign Guide

I made a 10-act campaign guide you can follow if you are new. Act 1 starts here --> https://mobalytics.gg/poe/guides/campaign-act-1

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • EZ Campaign
  • Smooth Mapping Progression
  • Deep DELVE Master
  • 16.5 Nightmare Boss Farming
  • AOE + Mobility (this is not an ideal build for clearing an entire dense map, for instance)

Specifically Level 1-10

POB: https://poe.ninja/poe1/pob/8756e

IMO the single hardest phase of this whole archetype's life is 1-10. After the Brutus fight, it's all downhill.

If you find a worthy shield, switch to Shield Crush, with Faster Attacks Support and Momentum Support.

If you don't find a worthy shield, take your gem of choice, probably 2-handed slam.

For Rhoa quest I actually prefer Spectral Throw. It plays very well in that zone, where dying to a small pack of Rhoa is actually quite easy.

You should still slot your Shield Crush and your Shield Charge to level the gems.

After you get that first shield, you don't have to commit such crimes again. :)

Important Details

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING to realize is that your damage from Shield Crush is based on your Armour and/or Evasion on your SHIELD. If this stat is high, you won't actually need anything else except mobility. Use my loot filter for the campaign, and check all the shields for defensive stat rolls.

======================================================================

Playstyle

This is a VERY straightforward to play. You use Shield Charge for general mobility (and even for clearing mobs while you travel -- charge straight into them). When you can, end the animation of a Shield Charge with a Frostblink. Chaining these two together provides VERY efficient mobility. When your attack speed begins to scale, you will be ZOOM ZOOMING.

On mobs and bosses, you deal damage with Shield Crush, and can use Frostblink to dodge telegraphed attacks where necessary.

======================================================================

Gems

The support gems you socket with Shield Crush are usually not even needed at this stage (the damage is so high), and if you have them they are flexible. The highest damage output is Maim Support and Added Fire Damage Support. But you could also opt for speed with Faster Attacks Support and Momentum Support. This will be up to you, and could be contingent on how good you've been at snagging a decent shield.

The link-up of Shield Charge with Faster Attacks Support and Momentum Support is essential for speed throughout the campaign. Always maintain a R-G-G or you will slow down immensely.

The Heralds are optional technically, but each plays a nice roll in what you are doing:

1 --> Blood and Sand adds damage, stay in BLOOD stance

2 --> Herald of Ash adds % damage as extra based on our phys, and also provides some AOE with its overkill splash damage. It can be especially effective when using Shield Charge for general traveling.

3 --> Herald of Purity also adds physical damage, but serves more than anything else as a defensive layer. The minions constantly summon (even in boss fights), and distract your foes.

4 --> (Just note that Haste, Pride, and Precision will all come later)

======================================================================

Gear Priority

As mentioned, highest highest priority is your flat armour stats on your shield (highest Armour + Evasion always wins). Again, this is the source of your damage.

Should also mention that only the GLOBAL stats from your weapon will do anything. Early on, just look at the implicit of the weapon you use. I prefer the crit chance modifier from Glass Shank, and later on when you allocate Precise Technique, there is value in accuracy rating implicit options, especially where you may not have accuracy > health yet.

2x Iron Ring + a Rustic Sash are nice early for some easy added damage.

Find movement speed for your boots.

Stack armour where you can, Evasion is second best, and Energy Shield is not useful.
