This guide covers the functionality of Essences in Path of Exile 2. Essences are a crafting Currency that can be used to add specific modifiers to items and come in different levels of quality which affects their power
Overview
How to Find Essences
You'll start encountering Imprisoned Essence monsters within the first Act of Path of Exile 2's campaign. These are monsters frozen in time that you can release by clicking on them three times. The imprisoned monster will be empowered by the Essence it contains, granting it new abilities. If you are able to defeat the monster, it will drop the Essence it was empowered by.

You can also affect Essences with Vaal Orbs which can either change the Essences the imprisoned monster is affected by, by either upgrading, downgrading, changing their type entirely, or instantly releasing the monster
Essence Type and Quality
There are 19 types of normal Essences, which each add modifiers of a specific type. Essences also appear in different Quality types: Lesser, Normal, Greater, Perfect and Corrupted
Quality
- Lesser, Normal and Greater: upgrades a Magic item to a Rare item with a guaranteed modifier
- Perfect: Removes a random modifier, then adds a guaranteed modifier
- Corrupted: Removes a random modifier, then adds a guaranteed modifier

Lesser Essences
Lesser Essences
Lesser, Normal and Greater Essences function similarly to Regal Orbs in that they upgrade a Magic Item to a Rare item with a specific guaranteed modifier. These are fairly common during the Campaign and are useful for creating marginal upgrades
- Jewellery: Rings and Amulets
- Armour: Boots, Gloves, Helmet, Body Armour
- Equipment: All Equippable Items

Perfect Essences
Perfect Essences function differently to their Lesser, Normal and Greater counterparts, in that they first remove a modifier and then add a new modifier. These modifiers are special and often cannot be acquired from any other source other than Perfect Essences. These can be extremely powerful and can be used to elevate already strong items into incredibly powerful endgame items.
It is important to take note of which of these modifiers are Prefixes and Suffixes. This matters because this information can be used to ensure that the Perfect Essence removes either a Prefix or Suffix when applying it
- If a Perfect Essence modifier is a Suffix, and an item's Suffixes are full, the Perfect Essence will be forced to remove a Suffix modifier in order to make space to add the Perfect Essence modifier. The same applies to Perfect Essence Prefixes
- This means that in some cases players can craft half their item first (either the Prefixes or Suffixes), before safely completing the other half with Perfect Essences

Corrupted Essences
Corrupted Essences are a special type of Essence that can be obtained by using a Vaal Orb on a Perfect Essence you find in Maps
Corrupted Essences function by first removing a random modifier from a Rare item, then adding a guaranteed modifier. Similarly to Perfect Essences, knowing if these are Prefixes or Suffixes can work to your advantage

There is also an Abyss Essence which can be obtained from Essences that intersect with Abysses you find in Maps. This can be used to add a rather nebulous modifier to items that seems to increase the odds of Revealing a higher tier modifier when using Desecrated Currency on items. This will be discussed in another guide

Essence Atlas Points
There are also points on the Atlas Passive Tree that can be allocated to improve the odds of finding more and better Essences in your Maps

Merging Worlds might be confusing, but to explain it in simpler terms: imagine you have a Rare Monster in your maps with four modifiers such as Magma Barrier, Hasted, Extra Cold Damage and Invulnerability Aura. If this monster spawns in the Map as an imprisoned Essence monster, there's a 25% chance for this Monster to instead have 4+ Essences affecting it, instead of its usual Rare monster modifiers. With this Passive Point, it is possible to find a single monster affected by 4, 5, 6+ Essences, resulting in a pretty big loot explosion if you're able to defeat it
