Patch 0.5 for Path of Exile 2 is the largest update to date, with a primary focus on improving the endgame. Read through our article below for more information!

The Return of the Ancients update has a major focus on endgame content with a vast overhaul to the progression of the Atlas endgame and its systems. An introductory questline has been added to each core league mechanic such as Breach or Abyss, and each mechanic can be found in its own fixed location on the Atlas. There is also a new pinnacle boss for each of Breach, Expedition, Delirium and Ritual.
In addition to core league mechanic quests, there's a new primary questline and a new overhauled Atlas Passive Tree. The primary questline, Origins of Divinity, will have you battling your way through an ancient Fortress on your way to face a new pinnacle boss, The Arbiter of Divinity. Completing areas in the Fortress will award Passive Points to spent on the new Atlas Passive Tree, and successful attempts against the Arbiter of Divinity will allow you to automatically complete entire sections of the Fortress in order to immediately obtain larges amounts of points at once.
On top of the new tree, there's also a new Ascendancy-style system for the endgame, Masters of the Atlas. There are 3 Masters in patch 0.5: Jado, Hilda and Doryani. Each NPC specialises in specific mechanics and enhances your loot or gameplay in areas, but only 1 Master can be active at any one time.
The new league mechanic in patch 0.5, Runes of Aldur, will spawn Remnants into each area which can be interacted with to pull up a recipe interface. Each Remnant has a set number of Runic symbols which make up a selection of recipes that can be learned for future use. Each recipe will yield a shown reward, but it will also apply additional modifiers to Monsters spawned by this mechanic. Choosing a recipe will engrave the Runestones onto the Remnant, spawning Monsters that you must slay in order to receive your reward.
Aldur Remnant will also roll into Expedition encounters from Act 4 onwards into the endgame. Remnants can be exploded within the radius of planted explosives, triggering the Remnant encounter and applying the extra modifiers to all Monsters along the chain.
Runic Ward is a new defensive resource being introduced in patch 0.5. Runic Ward is essentially a hit pool that sits below your life - if you go to 1 life remaining, any Damage taken will begin to be taken from your Runic Ward instead. This resource is obtained by Runeforging gear such as Shields, Body Armours or Helmets, to add the resource to these items. In the endgame you can obtain much more Runic Ward by trading off portions of your other defensive stats on your gear pieces depending on the base type.
Additionally, this new resource is used as a spender for brand new Kalguuran skills which do not have an associated colour or attribute requirement, making them universally useful in many different builds.
Changes are being made to make the campaign more accessible, especially in regards to subsequent runs during a league. Many areas now have subtle indicators to show you where you should be going, such as The Hunting Grounds in Act 1, which now has an indicator that shows you the direction of Freythorn upon completing the central Ritual encounter.
Additionally, some areas have been shortened, whilst others have been removed entirely or move to another connecting zone. For example 'The Dreadnaught Vanguard' has been removed, and there is now a single zone on the way to the Act 2 boss.
The Spirit Walker is a new ascendancy for the Huntress in patch 0.5, whilst the Martial Artist completes the full assortment of Monk ascendancies. Click the links to find out more details about these new classes.
Older ascendancies have also been reviewed, with the Gemling Legionnaire and Chronomancer receiving larger reworks. The Gemling Legionnaire will now be able to specialise into Skill Gem quality via
Advanced Thaumaturgy by gaining an extra quality stat that no other class can access, allowing for some unique builds. Meanwhile for the Chronomancer, a much larger overhaul sees a powerful new self-cast option,
Now and Again that provides a chance for Spells to repeat and echo, and a new defensive powerhouse in
Phased Form.
