Build Overview

SUMMARY:

This build is my league starter of choice for 0.5, "Return of the Ancients," now including early-endgame and mid-endgame variants. Seeing as it features one of the newly released ascendancies this league, playtesting in advance is somewhat limited, so please keep that in mind. The guide will continue to be updated as new information becomes available that enhances the build in some way.

This particular Twister variant puts the primary skill front and center, with with the Spirit Walker ascendancy offering major benefits through Primal Bounty and The Mhacha's Gift, giving Twister a huge boost to damage and clearspeed.

CAMPAIGN REGEX:

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • High ceiling for mobility scaling through weapon swap tech
  • Easy mapping with multi-screen-wide freeze and clear
  • Extremely strong in arena zones like Ritual as well as several other mechanics
  • Budget-friendly gearing with a roadmap into high-budget status
  • Multi-button rotation required for optimal performance
  • Unique-heavy gearing endgame progression
  • Highly-gear dependent for scaling damage
  • Features several key transitions

Build Variants

This build variant is for the remaining campaign progression with Primal Bounty coming online first to give a consistent power spike to Twister count and projectile speed. also It consists of a minor passive point respect out of mobility passives and The Talisman weapon swap into a proper dual-spear setup focused purely on attack speed with Whirling Slash alongside Dance with Death while keeping Twister exclusive to damage points.

CRAFTING GUIDE:

An all-encompassing crafting guide for this build can be found here.

WEAPON SETS:

To assign a weapon to a specific weapon set, open the character gear window, and toggle between weapon one and two.

VERY IMPORTANT: A major transition takes place in campaign away from Talisman tech into a double spear setup. After allocating Dance with Death, the spear occupies both weapon sets, with an empty offhand in weapon set 1. To assign the same weapon to BOTH weapon sets, right-click the lock symbol in the same place as the toggle option.

STAT PRIORITY:

Later on in the campaign, the weapon for Twister (assigned to weapon set 2) starts to matter quite a lot. The damage on Whirling Slash matters less and less over time, so just focus on having the fastest weapon in that slot. Check the vendor frequently for new spear bases and potential upgrades, even magic. Early game essences and runes can really boost flat damage at this stage.

Total life pool and resistances begin to matter more as well, and good evasion or armor rolls begin to really make a difference in survivability. This stage begins a reprioritization away from pure glass cannon into some defenses.

WEAPON SET ASSIGNING:

To assign a skill to a specific weapon set, open the skill window and click the checkbox for the desired weapon set (both are checked by default).

After allocating Dance with Death, Whirling Slash, Barrage, and Fangs of Frost should be designated to weapon set one, while Twister and Ice-Tipped Arrows are designated to weapon set two. All other gems can remain assigned to both.

More on how to assign weapons and passives to their preferred weapon set can be found in their respective sections of the guide.

ROTATION:

Ice-Tipped Arrows should be prepped for almost every Twister attack. Barrage is used on top of it when dealing with difficult enemies. Once Primal Bounty is unlocked as the second ascendancy notable, Dodge Rolling will trigger a much more powerful version of Twister when desired. The rotation at its core remains Whirling Slash > Whirling Slash > Whirling Slash > Twister.

While purely optional, on longer fights (boss fights especially), it's optimal to use Parry > Fangs of Frost to force elemental ground for a long duration. This imbues subsequent Twister attacks with more added elemental damage. Several Twister rotations can fit inside this window of opportunity.

After acquiring the first ascendancy point Vivid Stampede, Fangs of Frost gets phased out, while Parry remains optional for its debuff and synergy with Frenzied Riposte.

Pounce and Werewolf form can still be used to get around, but onceDance with Death gets allocated, all Werewolf tech then gets phased out with the reassigning of spears into both weapon sets.

JEWELLER'S PRIORITY:

The priority order for Lesser, Greater, and Perfect Jeweller's is as follows:

  1. Twister
  2. Ice-Tipped Arrows
  3. Whirling Slash
  4. Barrage
  5. Herald of Ice
  6. Wind Dancer

SPIRIT GEMS:

War Banner maintains priority on bosses, and Combat Frenzy comes online midway through the campaign. Enemies should be getting frozen at all times.

OTHER:

Whirling Slash should NOT be leveled up. It remains at level one to reduce the mana cost of the skill as much as possible. This is especially important in the later stages of the game.

Projectile Acceleration III is very high priority as the first level 5 Support gem cut towards the end of the campaign. Huge synergy with Primal Bounty.

WEAPON SETS:

Over the course of the completing the campaign, you will be granted up to 24 passive points that can be split between two weapon sets. These points can be assigned to a specific weapon set using the interface in the top right corner of the passive tree window. These passives are color-coded. Red is weapon set one, and green is weapon set two both in this guide and in-game. As a general rule, follow the passive priority list and utilize the weapon set points as they become available.

This build heavily utilizes these weapon set passive points, and involves several minor respecs. After allocating Dance with Death, a respec occurs for all weapon set one points away from movement speed and into attack speed. A spear is then used in both weapon sets, with Whirling Slash designated to weapon set one (with no offhand), focusing on attack speed. Whereas Twister gets designated to weapon set two (buckler in offhand), focusing more on damage.

More on how to assign skills and weapons to their preferred weapon set can be found in their respective sections of the guide.

ASCENDANCY ORDER:

  1. Primal Bounty
  2. The Mhacha's Gift
  3. Wild Protector

The first two ascendancy notables, Primal Bounty and The Mhacha's Gift pair together for a massive boost to Twister's effectiveness. Wild Protector comes in later for some added defense.

How it Plays

This build plays much like your standard endgame Twister build, but with a few more moving parts, and a lot more damage. Trigger Primal Bounty to sync with Salvo using a single Dodge Roll. Whirling Slash at least three times to max out Whirlwind and move in the direction of Vivid Stampede picking up Shocked Ground along the way. Hard-cast Ice-Tipped Arrows and Barrage to further empower the primary skill. [OPTIONAL] Parry the enemy in advance to make them take 50% more attack damage for a short duration.

How it Works

In the final stages of the build, several skills and abilities scale Twister damage and clear exponentially. Some of these are passive and time-gated. Some of them are actively prepped during that required window of time. With a simple dodge roll and a few seconds in between, Salvo and Primal Bounty load up a high Twister projectile count. Meanwhile, Whirling Slash combined with Vivid Stampede locks in a supercharged elemental Whirlwind. The primary skill is then double empowered via Ice-Tipped Arrows and Barrage and finally released, making for one of the fastest and hardest hitting elemental Twister attacks in the game.
