Gothic 1 Remake can be unforgiving for new players, and you might find yourself banging your head against the same wall over and over again. However, there are several routes you can take into the game to hit the ground running, and in this guide, we will go over several tips and tricks to help you play Gothic 1 Remake.
This guide was created in conjunction with our friend ItalianSpartacus and we recommend watching the video below alongside it!
Not Training Combat
Unlike traditional games, Gothic 1 Remake’s combat system is unique and harder than many. When you have little level 1 combat, you will be unable to use one-handed weapons effectively, and you’ll use both hands instead, just because you do not physically know how to fight.
Instead of putting up with it, you can change that quickly by speaking to Scatty.
Scatty will train you how to use weapons more effectively, and help you do things such as parries, combos, critical hits and more. It will cost you 10 LP and 50 Ore, but it is a great investment to get your journey started.
You can also talk to Kirgo, who is very close to Scatty. You can fight him nonstop with low impact. I would recommend saving the game first, just in case you do not win the fight. You can then practice fighting him and learning the basics of combat. You can see how people walk, their actions before attacking, etc., and you’ll soon learn how to duel enemies.
Brute Forcing Lock Picking
Lock Picking can be really difficult and frustrating in Gothic 1, and ItalianSpartacus has already made an in-depth video on Lockpicking, which we recommend watching as well.
It is a good idea to get 1 point into Lock Picking as soon as possible to double your chances of picking a lock. The player only gets 2 attempts at breaking a lock before the pick is broken, and when being at least level 1, you’ll have double the attempts.
Furthermore, having level 1 Lock Picking makes the whole experience a lot easier by stopping some of the Lock plates from interacting with each other. Some locks are mathematically impossible without skilling this up!
Sticking to the Roads
Don't just run from point A to point B. The Colony is a vast, wide open world - go see it!
When exploring, make sure you walk everywhere and look in every nook and cranny. Look in buckets, in dark areas, and around the outside before making your way in. You will be surprised at how much free loot you can pick up. From Herbs, to produce, weapons, arrows and much more.
By exploring everything, you can find a lot of random loot that you can sell to the Merchant for Ore, which you can then use to buy new equipment and other items. Alternatively, you can consume the produce you find, and you could even use the weapons or equipment you find to progress through the game.
Being Anti-Social
Before diving too deeply into the game, it's a good idea to speak to everyone you come across, as many people will give you side quests which you can complete for additional loot and XP. Early XP will help you get levels quickly and make mastering other parts of the game, such as combat and Lock Picking easier.
Keep an eye out for named NPCs and don't be lazy - talk to them!
Inside the camp, many of the quests are very quick and easy, and do not require you to travel too far, meaning you can complete them with ease.
Not Taking Every Opportunity to Get XP
Alongside these easy quests, you should try to grab as much free experience as you can. Throughout the camps, there are Meatbugs, which you can kill, and they give some XP and bug meat. Mole Rats are also a good option as they give more XP than Meatbugs.
Admittedly, they don't give much XP, but some XP is better than none, and you'll be needing a LOT of it if you want to level multiple skills.
If you want easy free XP early, talk to Mordrag or Baal Parvez. These NPCs escort you to the New Camp and Swamp Camp respectively. Along the way, these NPCs will engage and kill all enemies (even ones you kite towards them) while giving you all the XP and loot. You can get an easy 2,000 experience this way which is good for a few levels early game!
Staying Out of the Kitchen
If you thought the world of culinary devices are beneath you, think again. Most mammals in the game drop meat that you can cook up for valuable food items that heal you way before you get access to Health Potions (and more economically too).
Inside the North Gate, there is a pan which you can use to cook recipes. You start by learning to cook Grilled Meat, and we recommend this because cooked foods support your healing and health.
Cooking is also a good option because grilled meat can sell for more at the Merchants, and if you have a lot of spare food going, you may as well cook it if you intend to sell it.
Not Enabling Item Highlighting
In the mine and in dark areas of the game, it can be really hard to spot items that have been placed or dropped. However, you can make it very easy to spot them by heading into your settings and making a few adjustments.
Head to settings and accessibility, and scroll down to interactions and make sure object outliner is turned on. This will make spotting objects in the dark much easier without needing a Torch.
Sitting on Your LP
LP and stats are the main ways you will progress and get stronger in the game. You can split your points among mana, dexterity and strength, and then you’ll eventually improve new skills by speaking to trainers.
Considering the difficulty of Gothic 1, sitting on these Learning Points is a massive mistake. Go talk to Diego and level up your Strength or Dexterity at the very least so you can equip better weapons.
Trainers generally require multiple resources, such as Learning Points (10 are earned by levelling up) and ore. Spending your LP to improve your skills is very important as you progress through the game.
Up to level 30, upgrading your mana, strength and dexterity only costs 1LP, but it quickly jumps later on.
As you can tell, you need XP to get LP and levels efficiently; that is why we recommend taking small wins here and there and doing some of the things in this article.
Sticking to One Camp Early Game
In Gothic, each camp is different, and each makes the game unique. Before choosing a camp, go visit every camp first, as you can do all the side quests in each camp, loot every camp, and get a ton of XP for free as well.
Not Spamming Quicksave
You need to save your game frequently in this game. On PC, you can press F5 to quicksave and F9 to quickload. It might seem like a pain to begin with but it beats out losing progress when you die - and you WILL die.
Don't forget about manual saves too! They won't get overwritten and are useful when you find yourself at a cross roads that you may want to backtrack to.
Ignoring Plants/Herbs
Herbs and Plants are scattered across the game, and it be easy to ignore them, but we recommend that you pick every single one of them up. Even if you won't get much use out of some of them, they can be sold to Merchants for ore, which can be used to buy items and buy skill upgrades.
The ones you don't sell you can keep for crafting or cooking later on!
Look Out for Strong Items
If you want a very strong Bow in the early game, leave the camp via the main entrance and go forward until you see a river. Jump in the river, and you will see an underwater cave. In said cave, there is a chest which has a Rider’s Bow among other items. This item in the early game will help you a lot and help you kill enemies as it deals considerably more damage than other items, so I recommend you pick it up.
