Overview

The world of Gothic 1 Remake can be daunting for newcomers. This RPG maintains the harsh experience of the original game, and some convoluted mechanics might leave players confused for the first few hours of playing. In this article, you’ll find crucial advice to smooth out the early game of Gothic Remake and find some key items that will aid with progression.

This guide was written by our expert, dxvis.

Talk to Named NPCs

Gothic 1 Remake does not offer any indication about which NPCs will give quests or are important at all. However, you can distinguish special NPCs because they will have a unique name - Not “Digger” or “Guard”, but a proper name like “Diego”, “Scatty”, “Fingers”, and so on.

Talk to Named NPCs

When reaching a new area, you should speak to every named NPC, as they will show up on your Glossary and often give new side quests and advance the story.

Save The Game Often

Gothic 1 Remake is a hard game, and you will find yourself dying to enemies often, or triggering unwanted events which are not always expected - like accidentally hitting a friendly NPC.

Save The Game Often

Auto-saves don’t happen often, which means dying could have you backtrack several minutes of gameplay. To avoid this, use the Quick Save function:

  • Keyboard: F5
  • Controller: Left Bumper + Options Button

Get Stronger with Early Level Ups

Leveling up in Gothic 1 Remake grants a 12 HP increase and 10 LP (Learning Points), which can be used to level up stats and learn Skills. The player character starts off with weak stats, but gets decent bonuses with early levels.

Get Stronger with Early Level Ups

When starting out your adventure, you should focus on taking down weak enemies like Molerats and completing simple quests until you reach level 2 or 3.

Level Up Quickly with Escort Missions

You’ll find two NPCs in the Old Camp who will offer to take you to the New Camp and the Swamp Camp, named Baal Parvez and Mordrag. These escort missions will not only grant you XP, but several thousands of XP as your ally will take down monsters on their own, granting you full XP.

Get Strong Weapons Early

Once you get started with the Old Camp admission quests, Sly will ask that you find Nek, who lies in a cave just outside the Old Camp southern gate. You can loot the Weathered Axe from his body, which has 13 base attack.

There are better weapons in the Old Camp, though, like the Sting Mace, with 25 base attack and a 22 Strength requirement. You can easily get this weapon by challenging Kharim to a fight and looting it from his body.

Learn Runic Magic

Gothic 1 Remake has a fully-fledged magic system. There are two types of magic: Runes and Scrolls. Runes allow you to cast a spell indefinitely, whereas Scrolls disappear after being used.

Learn Runic Magic

If you want to learn Rune Magic, you will have to find Torrez in the Old Camp, who will ask for two Wolf Claws and a Parchment before you can learn magic. You can buy the Wolf Claws from Mordrag and the Parchment from Graham inside the Old Camp.

After handing over the items to Torrez, he will teach you Rune Magic, as well as a single spell for 5 LP. You can choose between Firebolt, a damaging spell, and Healing, a restoration spell.

Get a Map Early in your Adventure

When you start your adventure, you will find that you don’t have a map. Instead, you will have to purchase it from select vendors located in the different Camps.

Get a Map Early

You can find Graham in the Old Camp, directly to the right after entering through the northern gate. He sells the Old Camp map and the Colony map. These are rough sketches of what’s in the colony, marking main settlements and roads which you can use to get a general idea of where things are. Some quests will place marks on the map as well.

Unlock the Parry by Training One-Handed Combat

The combat in Gothic Remake is brutal, as most enemies can kill you with a few hits. However, you can completely negate all incoming damage by using the Parry.

You will not have this skill when starting the game - Instead, it is taught to you by Scatty, in the Old Camp, for 10 LP and 50 Ore. You can find him near the fighting pit.

The parry timing is tight. You will need to press the block button when the enemy is about to swing their weapon, which will then parry their strike. Against monsters, you should block briefly before the attack connects.

Cook Meat to Restore More HP

When taking down enemies like Molerats and Scavengers, you can loot their bodies to get raw meat. Instead of eating it raw, you can use one of the many cooking pans found in Camps and roads to cook it, granting a higher HP restoration.
