Overview

Gothic 1 Remake is an action-RPG developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic.

A ground-up rebuild of Piranha Bytes' 2001 cult classic, it drops you into the penal Colony with very little hand-holding. That's part of the charm, but it's also why your 'M' button doesn't do anything when you first drop in.

In Gothic 1, the map is something you have to buy. So if you're wandering the Colony blind and wondering where your map went, this is how to sort it. (Just starting out? Our full beginner's guide has you covered.)

You Have to Buy the Map

There's no map in your inventory when you begin, and the game never tells you how to get one. It's not a bug or a pickup you walked past. Maps are items you purchase from a trader, the same as a sword or a healing potion.

There are two early game traders that sell maps: Graham and Dexter. They're both found in the Old Camp.

Finding Graham

Follow the road from your starting point and you'll arrive at the Old Camp, the first major settlement in the Colony. Head inside and turn right, following the upper ring. That's where Graham tends to hang out.

Talk to him, work through the opening dialogue, and eventually you'll get the option you're after: "I want to buy a map." Pick that, and his stock opens up.

Graham sells two maps: a map of the Colony and a map of the Old Camp. Get the Colony map first. It covers the whole region rather than just the starting settlement, which makes it far more useful for actually finding your way around. It'll set you back around 45 ore.

If you want the map for cheaper, progress throughout the Old Camp recruitment questline until Diego tasks you with going to the old mine. He'll tell you to get a map from Graham who'll sell one to you for 20 ore.

The Old Camp map is there too if you want the more detailed local view, but it's the lower priority of the pair. Grab the Colony one now and come back for the other when you've got coin to spare.

Finding Dexter

Running further around the ring until you reach the Southern entrance will take you to the merchant quarter, such that it is. Here you'll find Dexter and Fisk, the two main Shadow vendors. The former sells a map of the Colony if you are unable to locate Graham.

Short on Ore?

45 ore isn't a fortune, but if you're completely skint this early, the fix is simple: loot anything that isn't nailed down and sell it. Pick up loose items as you explore, then offload them to the various vendors dotted around the Old Camp. A few minutes of scavenging will more than cover the cost.

Weapons are especially good to sell.

(Just try not to get caught helping yourself to things that aren't yours. The locals aren't fans.)

Opening It Up

Once the map's bought, press M to bring it up. Don't expect anything fancy - it's a static image rather than a zoomable, draggable affair. What you can do is drop your own markers on it, which is genuinely handy for flagging quest spots, traders, or anywhere you'll want to head back to later.

And that's the lot. Buy the Colony map from Graham, mark it up as you go, and you'll never lose your bearings in the Colony again.
