Overview

One of the most important elements of any RPG is its combat. The Gothic 1 Remake is no different, and in many ways despite being a re-imagining of a 25 year old game, combat is one of the more satisfying experiences even compared to its modern-day contemporaries.

A big part of that is the sheer variety of weapons on offer. Whether you're a melee brute or you like to pick enemies off from range, there's a whole armoury of nasty toys scattered across the Colony, just waiting for you to dig them out.

But not all weapons are created equally. Especially once you start reaching late game, you simply can’t succeed with a wimpy twig in your back pocket. You need the best of the best. And that’s precisely what we’re going to show you today.

Here are all the best weapons in the Gothic 1 Remake, for every single play style and weapon class. Swords, axes, maces, bow, crossbows, one handers, two handers - we’ve got it all. We won’t just show you them, of course, we’ll tell you how to get them too.

For more information on finding trainers to optimise your playthrough, whatever weapon you use, check out our skill trainer location guide.

Bow - Bow of Death

Let's start with the ranged weapons. For Robin Hood enjoyers, the best bow in the game is the Bow of Death.

Bows are a great option if you’re looking for that Legolas ranger fantasy. You can zip around, nock arrows, blast people with headshots, all while they chase after you. If you haven’t tried a Bow ranger run yet, it’s definitely worth a go for your next play through. Just remember - trolls still only count as one.

The Bow of Death deals 88 damage, and requires 73 Dex. Not the highest damage ranged weapon as we’ll soon find out, but its fast reload speed more than makes up for it.

It’s also incredibly easy to get this weapon. No violence required, no impossible locations, simply an honest transaction from a trustworthy vendor. You can buy it from the bandit Wolf in the New Camp, or the hunter Cavalorn out in the wilds. It’s a pacifists dream. What a pacifist would need with a powerful weapon called the “bow of death” is another question.

You’ll need to be in chapter 4 for these vendors to stock the bow, but you’d probably need to be close to that for the dex requirements anyway.

Crossbow - Crossbow of War

Now we turn to the highest damage weapon in the entire game - higher than all melee weapons too - the Crossbow of War. Clocking in at an astronomically high 120 damage, it needs 80 dexterity to use.

Whereas its raw damage number is exceptionally high, its dps sits in the complete opposite direction. Since its reload is so infuriatingly slow, AND you have to stand still to reload it, it makes it hard to use this weapon in any extended fights. BUT, using it to start a fight, or pick off a bunch of smaller goblins is incredibly satisfying.

There are two ways to get this weapon. The first way: you can grab it from a chest in the Ore Baron’s Fortress. You’ll come here in chapter 3 as part of the main story, but you can get here at any time. It is swarming with Harpies but they aren't the most challenging opponents in the game.

Before you head there though: know that this chest is inaccessible on foot. You’ll need to fly there. Since the colonies are locked in a bubble, there’s no easyjet to take you there - instead, you’re gonna need a scroll of transform: bloodfly. This will turn you into one of those annoying flying bugs and with that, you’ll be able to get there. You can buy this from Baal Cadar, Torrez, or Cronos in either of the camps.

Side note, this chest also has a potion that gives a permanent +4 to BOTH your strength and dexterity, so it’s 100% worth getting even if you don’t want the crossbow.

The other way to get it is to beat up Scar. He’s Gomez’s bodyguard in the Old Camp castle, you can find him hanging around the throne room during the day. That makes him a pretty impossible target, way too many people around him, but when the sun goes down and Scar goes to bed, that’s when you can strike.

His room is the first one of the right as you walk up the stairs. You can either pick the lock to get in, or wait for him to go in and run in yourself afterwards.

He’s not really that hard to beat, and the reward is certainly worth it.

Scar doesn’t just drop the highest damage ranged weapon in the game, though. He’s also good for the best one handed sword too.

1H Sword - Scar's Sword

That would be Scar’s Sword. In fact, this is not just the best one handed sword, it’s the best one handed weapon - period.

It does a whopping 85 damage, and requires 70 strength to wield.

Its moveset is great, the long range stab is amazing for staying safe and cheesing some opponents, with a powerful overhead smash to finish some off too. If you’re looking for a well-rounded one hander, then this sword is your best choice. And it’s pretty easy to get too.

As mentioned, you can find Scar’s sword, unsurprisingly, on Scar.

By the way - almost all the weapons we’ll talk about from here on out today belong to an NPC, so it’s worth mentioning this now: If you’re worried about your reputation in the Colony after beating these guys up, there are a few ways to make peace with the world again.

Firstly, if you just wait a few days, they’ll forget all about it. Secondly, you can talk to Gravo, and for a fee he’ll get out his Men In Black neuralyzer, or, and probably the easiest and simplest way, let the guards beat you up. Once they’ve had their revenge and taken out their frustrations, they’ll consider it even, and you’re good to go.

Just a word of advice for that last method though - go hide your valuables in a chest beforehand, as you might get robbed while you’re down. And, worth mentioning, sometimes the guards actually kill you when you’re down, so. Probably save before too.

1H Axe - Silas' Axe

This one isn’t actually objectively the most powerful, but it ALMOST is, and it’s like 100x easier to get, available even in chapter 1, so that’s why it’s here.

Silas’s Axe does 55 damage and requires 45 strength to use. A notable step down from Scar’s Sword, but, well, Axes just aren’t that great late game. And Scar’s is busted.

If you wanted the absolute best axe for damage, that would be Lares’ axe, at 65 damage. But he’s the big boss of the New Camp and really really hard to beat.

Axes have a surprisingly nifty moveset, attacking fast and, most valuably, attacking wide. Axes are where it's at if you need to cleave down a group of enemies at once time.

Silas’s Axe is owned by Silas, the tavern keeper in the New Camp. If you’re not doing the New Camp questline you may struggle to get past the guards and into the Tavern. Fortunately, there is a backdoor entrance via the lake behind - jump in off the dock, swim down, follow the water through the cellar, and you’ll come out in a room right behind the bar. This is the same room you’ll need to go to if you’re doing the Rice Lord quest looking for Bran.

Doing this also secures yourself an escape route after beating Silas up so that the whole tavern doesn’t collapse on you on your way out.

Silas is really easy to bring down and considering how solid his weapon is, it’s a no brainer.

1H Mace - Orc Hammer

Our last one-handed weapon today is a one-handed mace. We’re mixing it up a bit for this one - no killing required to get this weapon. This one, the Orc Hammer, sits inside a locked chest in the Orc territory.

I do find this chest is a little tricky to unlock but, to be honest, I find most chests hard in this game. But, to make it easier, we do have a lockpicking guide on our site which shows you how to unlock any chest in the game, so go check that out if you’re struggling.

The Orc hammer does 50 damage and requires 42 strength to equip.

Hammers are not quick attackers, but they stagger like mad. Having both an uppercut and a down smash makes them ragdoll pretty much any smaller enemy in the game. Just don’t expect the same results versus a Shadowbeast.

To get the Orc Hammer you want to go to this spot on the map. It's a bit of a trek through the Orc territory, and you’ll have to dodge those demon dogs on the way there, but fortunately no actual Orcs. If you’ve got a mount you’ll get here easy, but if not, you just have to be a little more careful.

Unlock the chest, and there you have it - a Mace you won't replace for the rest of the game.

2H Axe - Lee's Axe

That’s all our one handers sorted, let’s now talk about the best two handers. Unlike one handers, there is no 2 handed Mace worth talking about (there’s literally only one in the game and its… really bad), so it’s just axes and swords today.

And the best two handed weapon by our account, is not the sword, as with one handers, but the axe. Lee’s Axe, specifically.

At a whopping 105 damage, it requires an equally eye-wateringly high 90 strength to use.

Two handed axes have arguably the most devastatingly brutal moveset in the game - huge, wide powerful swings, a chop up, a chop down - and it feels weighty and satisfying to use. The major thing it lacks though is range.

No prizes for guessing where this one is found. Lee is the leader of the mercenaries in the New Camp. There are a fair few problems with grabbing this one, though.

Firstly: Lee is almost always shadowed by Orik, his bodyguard. However, he does leave during the night, so that’s handy. Secondly, the room Lee’s in is really small and cluttered, so it doesn't leave much room for kiting our outplaying him. And lastly, Lee himself is built like a brick outhouse. He is by far the hardest opponent to bring down on this list. It’s doable, but it’s not easy.

We might sound hypocritical recommending Lee’s Axe when we specifically didn’t recommend Lares’ Axe because he’s hard to kill, and that’s simply because Lee’s Axe is genuinely that good it would be somewhat criminal to not mention it. If you’re looking for an easier axe to get your hands on though, the War Axe is purchasable from Sharky from chapter 5 onwards, and only does 10 less damage.

2h Sword - Innos' Rage

For your two handed sword of choice, it’s Innos’ Rage. Finally, a cool sounding weapon for this list!

Just shy of Lee’s 105 damage, Innos’s Rage clocks in at 102. Ironically, it needs even more strength to carry, at 95.

The two handed sword definitely has a particularly feudal feel about using it, the weapon swings are not just effective but surprisingly artsy and poetic too. It also has the longest ranged stab in the game, always useful despite its slow windup.

You don’t even need to beat the leader of the New Camp to get it! This time, you need to beat the leader of the Old Camp. Yep, this sword belongs to the one and only Gomez.

Unlike Lee though, Gomez is surprisingly easy to bring down, and you can follow the same strategy as you used with Scar to get to him - wait for him to go to bed, and then attack him. He does have some… female company though who will join in the fight, so keep that in mind.

He also has some other great loot on him including a key to a chest next to him which holds one of the absolute best armours in the game.
