Gothic 1 Remake offers players a plethora of combat and survival skills to master. These are crucial to your adventure and will make your journey through the Valley Mines easier. In this article, we are going to explore how skills work, how to train skills or attributes, such as one-handed, strength, lockpicking, and more, as well as provide locations for the skill trainers!
This guide was written by our expert, dxvis.
How do Skills Work?
The Hero character can learn various Skills by learning them from Skill Trainers. These are unique NPCs scattered across the world of Gothic 1 Remake. They will usually offer to teach you about their unique skills in exchange for LP (Learning Points) and Ore. You can obtain LP by leveling up, while Ore can be found around the world as well as by selling items and completing quests.
Once you learn a Skill, it will show up in the Stats menu, showing its level and unique effect. Some Skills can be upgraded multiple times, offering stacking bonuses.
Which Skills Should You Get or Improve First?
You’ll be able to access several Skill Trainers early in your adventure. However, you will not have LP and Ore to get all of them straight away. The recommended Skill order for smooth early game progression is:
One-Handed Combat. This will allow you to perform combos, parries, and critical strikes with one-handed weapons like swords and axes. Since most of the early weapons in the game are one-handed, this Skill will greatly improve your combat abilities.
Strength. Upgrading your Strength stat increases the damage dealt with melee weapons, which will be your main source of damage until you’ve gotten your hands on ranged weapons and learned magic spells.
Lockpicking. The Lockpicking Skill makes unlocking doors and chests easier, allowing up to 4 mistakes before a pick breaks, making it easier to get valuable loot and Ore from chest all around the world.
Rune Magic. Spell casting offers great utility, whether it is to deal damage from a safe distance or to cast healing spells.
Skill Trainers List - Locations and Requirements
Skill Trainers are unique NPCs that will teach you their unique Skill in exchange for LP and Ore. You will need to find them and talk to them to learn their Skills. Below, you will find a quick reference with all the teachers, as well as an in-depth guide on each of them!
Diego is one of the first characters you will meet in Gothic 1 Remake. He sits near the castle entrance inside the Old Camp, and grants Strength and Dexterity stat bonuses for a small amount of LP.
+1 Strength: 1 LP
+5 Strength: 5 LP
+1 Dexterity: 1 LP
+5 Dexterity: 5 LP
Strength increases the amount of damage dealt with melee weapons, while Dexterity increases damage dealt with ranged weapons. Additionally, weapons have minimum stat requirements, requiring a certain amount of Strength or Dexterity to be wielded.
Fingers - Pickpocketing and Lockpicking
Fingers is a member of the Old Camp Shadows. He sits in an elevated hut in the inner wall of the Old Camp, which you can find by turning left after entering the camp.
Fingers teaches the Pickpocketing and Lockpicking Skills, which allow you to steal from NPCs and open locked doors and chests, respectively. You can still lockpick without the Lockpicking skill, but it will be more difficult.
Pickpocketing (Trained): 10 LP and 80 Ore. Grants a moderate bonus to pickpocketing, making medium-difficulty targets more accessible.
Pickpocketing (Master) Grants a substantial bonus, making even well-guarded pouches more accessible.
Lockpicking (Trained): 10 LP and 100 Ore. Your pick breaks after 4 failures. When a pick breaks, the puzzle doesn’t return to the initial state.
Lockpicking (Master) Your pick breaks after 6 failures. When a pick breaks, the puzzle doesn’t return to the initial state. Additionally, one connection within the lock is disabled, simplifying the puzzle.
Scatty - One-handed Combat
Scatty can be found near the fighting pit in the Old Camp. He teaches the One-Handed combat Skills, making the Hero more proficient with one-handed weapons like shortswords and axes.
One-Handed (Trained): 10 LP and 50 Ore. Allows you to perform combos, critical strikes, and parries with one-handed weapons.
One-Handed (Master): 20 LP and 200 Ore. Additionally, increases critical strike chance, adds finishes to combos, knockback when attacking, and the ability to riposte after parrying with one-handed weapons.
Huno - Smithing
Players can find Huno in the elevated alley next to the fighting pit in the Old Camp, inside his smithing hut. After talking to him, he will offer the player the chance to learn the Smithing Skill.
Smithing: 10 LP and 50 Ore. Allows crafting one-handed weapons, and gives some basic one-handed weapon schematics.
Drax - Hunting
Drax sits in the road outside the Old Camp. From the northern gate, cross the bridge and turn right. You’ll find him in a small camp alongside Ratford.
Before you can learn hunting skills though, you’ll need to give him a Beer, which you can loot from various places in the Old Camp and chests in roads. Drax’s hunting skills allow you to get more materials from monsters you take down, which you can in turn sell for Ore, making hunting a good source of Ore.
Remove teeth: 1 LP and 175 Ore. Lets you extract teeth.
Remove fur: 1 LP and 250 Ore. Lets you extract fur.
Remove claws: 1 LP and 150 Ore. Lets you extract claws.
Skin reptiles: 1 LP and 250 Ore. Lets you extract skin.
Torrez - Rune Magic
Magic is a key mechanic in Gothic 1 Remake, allowing players to cast offensive and defensive spells alike. Learning a Rune Magic spell grants the ability to cast it at any time, in contrast to Scroll Magic, which destroys the Scroll after a single use.
Torrez strolls around the southern part of the Old Camp, usually in the covered market.
Before being able to learn Rune Magic, players must complete “The Price of Magic” side quest, also given by Torrez. He demands two Wolf Claws and one Parchment. Wolf Claws can be bought from Mordreg in the Old Camp or looted from wolves, and Parchment can be bought from Graham, also in the Old Camp.
Rune Magic: 5 LP (Also grants either the Firebolt or Healing spell)
Torrez will make the player choose between two starting spells: Firebolt or Healing. As their name suggest, Firebolt deals fire damage from a distance, while Healing regenerates player health. We recommend picking Firebolt, as it is useful in a variety of situations and offers safe damage, while Healing is weaker in comparison.
Cavalorn - Bow
Cavalorn lives in a secluded house right to the East of the Old Camp. Players can find it by exiting the Old Camp via the northern gate and immediately turning left, hugging the cliff wall, and going past Scavengers until they come across a road. At the end of it is Cavalorn’s House. Alternatively, players can follow the road that starts from the Southern Gate of the Old Camp, turning right, and then right again in the intersection.
Cavalorn sells bows, monster materials, and potions, making him a valuable vendor as well.
Bow (Trained). 10 LP and 50 Ore. You are quicker when drawing and aiming, more accurate, and can land critical strikes when using bows.
Cronos - Mana
Cronos improves the player’s mana pool, allowing them to use more spells before they need to recover it using potions or swamp weed. Mana is especially important after players get access to Rune Magic, as it lets them fire more spells in a given fight.
Cronos can be found in the New Camp, inside the cave.
+1 Max Mana: 1 LP
+5 Max Mana: 5 LP
Theron - Climbing
Climbing lets players climb certain walls, reaching otherwise inaccessible areas, often leading to shortcuts and valuable loot. This Skill is taught by Theron, who can be found in the Swamp Camp. From the Stone Temple, head right and walk until you reach a hut on the beach, where you'll find Theron.
Before you can learn the Climbing Skill, though, Theron will ask for 6 Northern Dark sprouts. These are obtained from Fortuno in the Swamp Camp, who sits directly below the Lab. You can ask any NPC to lead you to Cor Kalom's laboratory, or follow the alchemy signposts in the Swamp Camp. After handing over the Northern Dark, you can learn the Climbing Skill for 5 LP.
Climbing: 5 LP and 6 Northern Dark
Baal Cadar - Inscription (Scroll Crafting)
Scroll Magic is one of the two Magic systems in Gothic 1 Remake, the other being Rune Magic. Scrolls allow using the Spell scribed on them once, and they get destroyed after use.
You can learn this Skill from Baal Cadar in the Swamp Camp. From the Blacksmith (which you can find by the signposts on the Camp), head straight and you'll see a hut directly to your right, where Baal Cadar is.
Inscription: 10 LP and 100 Ore
Damarok - Alchemy
After learning Alchemy, players can craft potions of all kinds, increasing versatility in combat and allowing them to craftof useful Healing Potions.
Damarok is the Alchemy teacher in the Old Camp. He is found inside the castle gates - Meaning players must have completed the quest "A Test of Faith" and gained reputation in the Old Camp before being allowed in. Once inside, turn left and enter the building guarded by the mage Milten, then walk to the back room where Damarok is.
