Monster Hunter WildsNerscylla Guide - Weaknesses, Location, Armor & More

Overview

Nerscylla, a member of the Temnoceran monster species, adorns itself with the thunder-resistant hides of Gypceros that become ensnared in its webs.

Beware its numerous status ailments and its hatchlings, as they can overwhelm the ill-prepared. It can also be found infected with the frenzy virus, making for a more ferocious opponent! For many, this monster is the stuff of nightmares.

This guide is written by DerekTheMage.

Location

Nerscylla can be found in the Oilwell Basin, Iceshard Cliffs, and the Ruins of Wyveria. It can often be seen hanging on the ceilings of cave formations, akin to stalactites. It frequently takes refuge in areas it has covered in webs.

One of these locations is its nest in Zone 4 of the Iceshard Cliffs, where it hangs motionless in the middle of the nest when fatigued.

How to Prepare

Nerscylla is an interesting monster in the fact that while they have the Gypceros hides on their body they have a very strong weakness to Fire Damage and a very high resistance against Thunder damage.

However, when those parts are broken these are flipped making Nerscylla very susceptible to Thunder Damage and very resistant against Fire Damage.

As such, if you decide to use an elemental weapon for this fight, it is recommended that you bring both a Fire weapon to break the parts and a Thunder weapon to finish Nerscylla off. Alternatively, Nerscylla has a moderate weakness to the Paralysis Ailment. If you don't have a Thunder or Fire weapon, a Paralysis weapon can be an effective substitute.

Nerscylla inflicts multiple ailments: Poison from its fangs, Sleep from its stinger, and Webbed from the webs it shoots. Knowing how to counter these is essential:

  • Poison inflicts damage over time, leaving behind recoverable health. Counter this effect with Herbal Medicine or Herbal Powder to remove the damage over time instantly. An Antidote can also be used, though it takes longer to consume. Investing in the Poison Resistance skill will help to reduce the duration of the effect or completely negate it.
  • Sleep will cause your character to stumble briefly before falling into a deep sleep. While asleep, the first hit taken will deal increased damage. Counter this effect with an Energy Drink or by being struck by either the monster or a fellow hunter. Equipping the Sleep Resistance skill reduces the duration or negates the effect entirely.
  • Lastly, the Webbed effect will cause your hunter to become wrapped up in webbing and stand in place; this is a similar effect to being stunned. Use a Cleanser to counter this effect. You can also break free by moving, rapidly pressing buttons, or taking a hit. Equipping the Bind Resistance skill shortens the effects duration or negates it completely.

Mechanics to Look Out For

Web Sling

Nerscylla shoots a web forward, using it to propel itself forward rapidly. This attack can knock you back upon impact, dealing moderate damage. It is highly predictable, presenting a prime opportunity to parry or execute a perfect dodge. Otherwise, dodging to the left or right of Nerscylla will remove you from its path.

Web Shoot

Nerscylla aims its stinger forward and fires three web balls that stick to the ground. It can use this attack a second time immediately after. Stepping on the webbed ground or getting hit by a web ball immediately ensnares the player. This attack is fairly easy to evade by rolling to either side due to the projectiles' slow speed and small impact area.

However, in a chaotic battle, it can be difficult to track all the webs. The Webbed effect can be removed with a Cleanser or taking damage from the monster or another friendly hunter. Its duration can also be reduced or fully negated by equipping the Bind Resistance skill.

Jump Back —> Web Shoot

Nerscylla leaps back before launching three web balls in your direction. This move serves as both an attack and an evasive maneuver, but it is easy to dodge by rolling sideways.

Pincer Attack

Nerscylla’s fangs extend outward before it lunges forward, snapping them shut. If hit, you take heavy damage. It has a variation of this attack where Nerscylla will climb under its webs and then use its pincers to snap upward at you. It will also inflict Poison Damage, which should be countered with a Herbal Medicine or Herbal Powder.

Depending on your distance from Nerscylla, this attack can be difficult to evade due to its wide range, making guarding a safer option. Successful dodging will require precise timing. During this attack, a weak spot often appears on its fangs, making it vulnerable to a Focus Attack.

Arm Slash

Nerscylla raises its front arms before swiftly slashing inward, striking directly in front of it for minor damage. The attack has a narrow hitbox, making it easy to sidestep. However, it is executed rapidly, so watching for the arm raise animation will help in predicting and avoiding the strike.

Downward Slice

Nerscylla raises one arm and slices downward in front of it while advancing forward. It may repeat this attack immediately after. The attack has a small hitbox, but Nerscylla's forward movement can make it difficult to predict where it will land. Rolling to either side is the most effective way to evade it.

Swing --> Attack

Nerscylla uses a web attached to the ceiling to swing its body toward you before landing and potentially following up with another attack. The initial swing is easy to avoid by rolling due to its small damage area. However, since the follow-up can be any of its other attacks, this move is highly unpredictable and requires quick reactions.

Slam

Nerscylla briefly rises onto its hind legs before crashing down in front of it, dealing moderate damage and knocking back anyone in range. This attack is easy to avoid by rolling to the side or guarding. After landing, Nerscylla remains on the ground for a short time, giving you an opportunity to deal damage!

Pounce

Nerscylla moves backward before lunging forward with a bite, dealing moderate damage. As soon as it starts to retreat and prepares to jump, begin moving to the left or right and get ready to roll. This is the most reliable way to avoid the attack. It can also be parried or perfectly dodged with relative ease.

Stinger Attack

Nerscylla stands on its hind legs, preparing to strike with its stinger. This attack has two variations: one with a light blue Sleep Coating, which causes the Sleep status after a few seconds of stumbling, and another with a purple Poison Coating, inflicting Poison and dealing damage over time. The best way to avoid this attack is by rolling to either side, as it has a small area of effect.

If afflicted with Sleep, use an Energy Drink, take a hit from the monster, or have a fellow hunter strike you to wake up. The Sleep Resistance skill can reduce or completely negate its effects. If afflicted with Poison, use Herbal Medicine, Herbal Powder, or an Antidote to remove it. The Poison Resistance skill can reduce or nullify its duration.

Hatchlings

Nerscylla can summon its Hatchlings to assist in battle. While they don't deal significant damage individually, they can overwhelm you by swarming and gradually depleting your HP. However, they have low health, so they can be quickly taken out with any weapon.

Weak Spots to Focus

  • Body Weak Points: Pincer
  • Severable Points: None
  • Breakable Points: Left Claw, Stingers, Mantle

Pincers

Nerscylla’s pincers are an important spot to target; breaking them will greatly weaken all of their attacks that use them. When Nerscylla uses its Pincer Attack, it often exposes a weak spot during and for a few moments after the attack. Using a Focus Attack on the weak spot will deal a large amount of damage.

Gypceros Hides

The hides on its back and limbs make it highly resistant to Thunder Damage, but very susceptible to Fire Damage. Breaking these parts will cause the hides to fall off, reversing the resistances, and the limbs not covered by the hides will be susceptible to Thunder Damage and resistant to Fire Damage. Make sure when targeting parts on its body to use the correct element type damage to maximize damage!

Turf Wars

Nerscylla has been observed engaging in turf wars with monsters such as Blangonga and Gypceros. These monsters frequently fall prey to Nerscylla's webs.
