Overview

During the Patch 1.0.5 update, we learned that Marathon's Ranked mode launches on March 21 at 10:00 AM PT – March 24 at 10:00 AM PT. This is being described as a "beta" version in Season 1.

While most of Marathon's gameplay loop involves content that will be reset, the Ranked modes offers permanent Rewards. As of now, the Ranked mode is only for squads.

In this quick guide, we'll cover the basics of how Ranked works in Marathon.

How do you play Ranked?

To play ranked, you must be at least Runner level 25.

The queue will only be available on weekends, with the featured map rotating each week (the first week will be Perimeter).

Ranks

The Marathon ranks are:

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Pinnacle

Each rank has three subdivisions, so to get to Silver, you need to climb through Bronze III, Bronze II, and Bronze I.

Platinum and higher will be able to play ranked in high-stakes zones while all players can play Ranked in low-stakes zones. The zones change each week.

How to Progress Ranks (Scoring and Holotags)

To start Ranked, your crew must:

  • Choose a zone
  • Bring a loadout that meets/exceeds gear ante
    • Low Stakes = 3,000 ante
    • High Stakes = 10,000 ante
  • Buys a Holotag (more below)

In order to progress in Ranked, your crew must exfil with high-value loot that is scored and must meet or exceed the target score.

Any loot that is brought in does not count, so consider replacing that space with items that would be scored.

Whether brought in or found, items like ammo and consumables are not counted toward your score.

Holotags

Holotags are items that are required to played Ranked and carried in your inventory. They contribute to your crew's target score and each one adds to it based on the rarity of the Holotag.

Taking Holotags from defeated enemy Runners to exceed your crew's score target.

target score marathon

This means that to climb, you'll need to both loot and successfully hunt enemy Runners (or get lucky and find ones that died to PvE) to collect Holotags.

If your crew fails to meet its score target but exfils, no Ranked progress will be made. If you fail to exfil at all, you'll lose Ranked progress based on your crew's combined loss penalty.

Low Stakes Queue has a minimum Holotag tier of Bronze while High Stakes Queue has a minimum of Platinum. The first weekend will only have Low Stakes queue available.

Scoring Details

These details are directly from the Bungie Ranked explanation:

TLDR:

  • You have a score target set by your team’s Holotag values
  • Loot valuable items to get score
  • Once you reach your score target, exfil to get Rated Points
  • If you exfil before you hit your target, you don't get Rated Points
  • If you die, you lose Rated Points based on your team's Holotag values
  • You can get bonus Rated Points, aka overperformance capacity, by looting enemy player’s Holotags or collecting Tag Chips from UESC and map events

Complete breakdown:

  • Score target = minimum total loot value your team needs to exfil with to earn Ranked Points
    • Your score target is decided by your team’s combined Holotag value
    • Starting loadouts don’t count towards your score target
    • Exfil at your score target to earn RP
    • Exfil with less than your score target, and your Rank has no change
  • Overperformance capacity = how much loot over that score target you can earn bonus points for
    • This number starts at zero
    • You can gain overperformance capacity by looting enemy Runner Holotags or Tag Chips, which drop from high-value UESC and in-run activities
  • Loss penalty = how much you lose by failing to exfil
    • This number is decided by you team’s combined Holotag value
    • You only lose RP if you fail to exfil
