Can use his Q to poke the enemy while securing minions from afar. If he uses his Q to push and poke at the same time, he is making good use of his mana.
Has built-in Grevious Wounds with his E. This will reduce the enemies healing in the lane and in team fights too.
His Ultimate R gives Varuus a ton of playmaking and pick potential for his team.
Varus is prone to all-in as he has no dash. If the enemy layers CC on him, he is going to die very quickly.
Varus’ only self-peel tool is his Ultimate R. When it is down, he can easily be all-in’d by a strong enemy laner.
If Varus falls behind early, he is going to struggle to get back into the game: regardless of his build.

Focus on poking down the opposition with your Q and W. It should be pretty easy for you once you slow them down with your E.
You are highly immobile so it should be important for you to take some countermeasures against ganks. Ward around the lane and keep the wave on your side when possible.
Farm a lot and get your core items quickly. This will help you get kills and burst down enemies with your obnoxious Q damage.

Once you get your Ultimate R, you should be able to make picks all around the map with your teammates. Work with your Jungler to do so when possible.
During neutral objective fights, you should be able to disrupt a fight due to your Ultimate R, especially if the enemy is clumped. Just make sure that you land the ability.
Try to land your Q regularly on multiple people of the enemy team. This will force them to play safely and your team can later all-in them and finish the job.

As you get your items, you should have a really easy time blowing enemies up with ease. Set some deep wards to facilitate long-ranged Qs on the enemy team.
Your E and W will be really beneficial during actual fights as the Grievous Wounds and the slow should disrupt the enemy heavily. This will make your team win fights easily.
A defensive item may help you a lot in this matchup, especially if you are going for an AP build. Just make sure that you don't stay too far away from your allies.
Varus’ Q poke during the laning phase is pretty strong. If he aims his Q on the minion wave and the enemy at the same time, he will make great use of his mana.
At level 6, Varus can setup his Jungler with his Ultimate R. A good Varus will look to poke the enemy down and then get their Jungler to gank to shut down the enemy Mid laner.
Varus' first item is going to give him a huge power spike. This simply means that his burst damage combo will do a lot of damage and can completely destroy any immobile or CC’d enemy champion.
At level 11, Varus will be able to add 2 points into his Ultimate R. This makes it really easy for Varus to pick off enemies, especially when Varus is trying to swap lanes.
His first ability will be maxed out at level 9. This will allow him to deal a lot of damage to his opponents in the lane. It will also provide him the incentive to carry for his team if he is already ahead.
Varus' AoE poke and Ultimate R make clumped fights disastrous for the enemy team. They will suffer if Varus manages to get an excellent Ultimate R during neutral, objective fights.
At level 16, Varus will be able to add 3 points in his Ultimate R. It will increase the damage dealt by the ability while simultaneously reducing the cooldown.
Varus will have a lot of items during this stage of the game. This will let him dish out a lot of damage, and his burst potential due to his W will be phenomenal.
Varus is excellent in team fights due to his Q and Ultimate R. A good Ultimate R can literally allow Varus' team to win a significant battle with minimal effort.
