His W can single handedly turn a fight into his favor. The damage is enough to shred through tanks and squishies alike.
His Ultimate R makes it very hard for the enemy to not take poke damage. This is especially true if Kog’Maw is going for the AP build.
With proper peel, he can take over a game quite easily due to his Q and W. He also has some amount of self-peel with his E, but it is better for him to maintain his distance from CC.
Very immobile which can make him a prime target for engage champions. Once engaged upon, he can do nothing unless he gets some help from his teammates.
Once his W is down, he will be useless unless he has some sort of item or numbers advantage. His W forms the core of his entire kit so if the enemy waits it out, he won’t be as effective.
When going for the AD build, his Ultimate R is next to useless in terms of both utility and damage. It also costs a high amount of mana which is really bad for Kog’Maw.

Keep poking enemies with your E and try to target the minion wave with it for maximal effectiveness. Do not do anything which involves you pushing into the enemy territory.
If the enemy is extending too far, just use your W to get some damage off on them. However, back off a bit as sudden aggression from the enemy laner may suggest that you are being ganked.
Getting your Ultimate R will be a massive bonus in the lane. Now you can poke the enemy out of the lane without breaking any kind of sweat while maintaining distance from the enemy.

Keep using your Ultimate R to poke multiple enemies in the lane. Remember that it is an AoE ability. Therefore, you should try to hit as many targets with it as possible.
Once you get your core items, the burn damage from your Ultimate R and E will be pretty unbearable for the enemy team. Just ensure that you are appropriately positioned when attacking the enemy.
During neutral, objective fights, make sure that you are as far away from the enemies as possible. That being said, ensure that your E and Ultimate R cover essential choke points.

During this phase of the game, you will want to stay behind your frontline and dish out as much poke damage as you possibly can. Watch your flanks for assassin's trying to take you out quickly.
Getting a defensive item will help you a lot in this game against all-in comps. You will want to make sure that you stay alive to deal a lot of damage, and a Zhonya's will help you a lot when it comes to doing just that.
Your W should be hitting like a truck now as well, so you will have to keep your positioning in mind while dealing damage. Don't throw a game by Flashing forward and out of the protection of your team.
At level six, Kog'Maw will gain access to his Ultimate R. This is important as the poke damage is really beneficial in taking down low on health enemies. This damage is further amplified if Kog'Maw goes for the AP build or a hybrid build.
His first item component will give him a damage boost and take more trades in the lane. He will have to be careful about over-extending and being caught out, though.
Adding multiple points in his E will allow him to dish out a lot of damage in a short time. This helps a lot when it comes to slowing and damaging enemies, especially the ones who are immobile.
His E will be maxed out at level 9. This is horrible for group-up enemy teammates who can easily target his E and melt down.
Level 11 allows Kog'Maw to deal a lot of poke damage to the enemies. The vast range also allows him to take down low-health enemies recalling in the distance.
He will be perfect during the mid-game, provided he doesn't get collapsed on and shut down. CC is his worst enemy, and Kog'Maw will have to keep an eye on his flanks at all times.
Kog'Maw will have multiple items during this phase of the game. This will result in him dealing a lot of damage to enemies and just bursting down the enemy backline during a fight.
Kog'Maw is very squishy and can be killed quickly in the late game by assassins or enemies with tons of CC. He will have to rely on his team to help him survive.
Getting 3 points in his Ultimate R will amplify the poke damage dealt by the ability. It will be his prominent damage-dealing ability that should hit like a truck at this point.
