Overview & Teambuilding Restrictions
Varka is an on-field DPS that deals PHEC and Anemo damage, with the former being about two thirds of his damage and Anemo being one third.
Varka comes with particularly stringent requirements on his party members in order to perform well. He requires at least one other Hexerei character to activate Hexerei: Secret Rite; exactly one more Anemo teammate; exactly two other teammates that are of the same Pyro / Hydro / Electro / Cryo Element. All of these conditionals significantly improve his damage. There are technically ways to bypass them, but they're broadly not worth it at all. Varka's Pyro teams are typically much stronger than his non-Pyro teams due to his teammate availability.
Without fulfilling the Hexerei requirement, Varka will not be able to perform 2 Enhanced Skills or Charged Attacks, while without the team Elemental makeup passive, he will do roughly ~30% less damage.
Elemental Skill & Sturm and Drang mode
Varka does damage primarily through Normal Attacks and his Enhanced Skill or Enhanced Charged Attack, but his NA talent level is not relevant. Instead, he uses his regular Skill to enter ‘Sturm and Drang’, infusing one of his Claymores with Anemo and the other Element of the team on his second Claymore. It will also start the cooldown for his Enhanced Skill / CA.
In this mode, Varka’s Normal Attacks will reduce the cooldown of his Enhanced Skill / CA, which can hold 2 charges. After doing enough NAs, Varka will want to use the Enhanced Attacks to deal a significant extra burst of damage. While the Charged Attack version deals a little bit more damage, the animation is longer and less reliable, making it a small tradeoff. Varka will generally be able to use two of these Enhanced Skills per rotation uptime at C0, unless there is cooldown reduction in his teams.
Basic Gameplay
An example basic combo for Varka’s uptime would be N5sE N4sE N1, or otherwise:
Swap into Varka → use Skill to enter Sturm and Drang→ 5 Normal Attacks → Enhanced Skill → 4 Normal Attacks → Enhanced Skill → 1 Normal Attack → swap out
A more involved combo would look like N1C N4sE N4sE N1C:
Swap into Varka → use Skill to enter Sturm and Drang→ 1 Normal Attack followed by 1 regular, non-enhanced Charged Attack → 4 Normal Attacks → Enhanced Skill → 4 Normal Attacks → Enhanced Skill → 1 Normal Attack → regular Charged Attack
This combo is substantially stronger and not particularly difficult to perform. Note that if you hold down the move forward command during his regular Charged Attack, Varka will be able to perform the next Normal Attacks much faster.
C1 gives Varka an extra charge of his Enhanced Skill / Charged Attack. An example combo with C1 would be N4sE N1sE N4sE N1C. You don’t want to use the extra Enhanced Attack immediately after entering Sturm and Drang, as Varka has a few passives that stack on-hit that increase his damage.
Elemental Burst
Varka’s Elemental Burst deals one instance of Anemo damage and one instance of infused Element damage. These instances of damage are extraordinarily low and are generally not worth using, ever. They do not receive the benefits of Varka’s Ascension 1 passive. Its only purpose is looking cool.
